My last trip to Palm Springs was<br />
Easter Weekend where I rented<br />
a room at the Alcazar, forgetting<br />
it was Coachella!! I had a great<br />
time, but there was NO REST!<br />
Honey, I’m like an aging Show<br />
Pony. I don’t know where I am<br />
half the time! They just put a<br />
leash on me and trot me out here<br />
and there. But I know I will be in<br />
Palm Springs on <strong>May</strong> 17th.<br />
The Palm Springs chorus is the<br />
best. All those beautiful men--<br />
who can sing too! I was once in<br />
a choir in the 8th grade. My choir<br />
teacher used to tell me to open<br />
my mouth REALLY WIDE, to<br />
‘Round Out’ my vowels...Little did<br />
she know how useful that information<br />
would be in later years!<br />

The Arts Institute of Palm Springs High School<br />
Sometimes it takes a village and sometimes it takes just<br />
one. At The Arts Institute of Palm Springs High School, it<br />
takes both.<br />
The Arts Institute places a student interested in art with a<br />
mentor. Mentors, who are volunteers, are working in, or have<br />
experience in the arts. They guide their student though the<br />
nuances of the art form as well as the associated business<br />
aspects. Whether the student continues on in that particular<br />
field is only bonus; the goal is to expose the student to the arts<br />
and foster an appreciation of the arts.<br />

High School counsel, Richard Kravitz, passionately guides<br />
the Arts Institute. Richard matches student with mentor; and<br />
oversees that the relationship is beneficial. Richard does<br />
this with little to no funding. Mentors, in addition to the time<br />
dedicated to the student, often provide the materials needed.<br />
The costs, depending on the art form, can be significant.<br />
What does the Mentor get out of the Arts Institute<br />
Program?<br />
For Mentor Juan Manuel Alonso, “(I)t is the pleasure I get<br />
watching how quickly these students grasp the concepts; it<br />
is magical.” But more that that Juan sees the program filling<br />
a need. “These students participate in Arts Institute as an<br />
elective. They are eager to learn. We already know the budgets<br />
for the arts are cut. Without art life does not work; it becomes a<br />
dull, routine devoid of passion and that makes people robots. “<br />

Charlie Ciali has been a mentor for several years. For him<br />
participation in the Arts Institute allows him to expose material,<br />
printmaking and encaustic, which are rarely available at the<br />
high school level in good art economic times!<br />
“The program offers the students the experience to work with<br />
an experienced artists. This allows them the ability to discover<br />
more about themselves as artists. An opportunity they could<br />
not get anywhere else. I feel it is part of my responsibility, not<br />
only show them how a particular medium works, but how to<br />
learn to see as an artist; to expose them to the many facets<br />
involved in being an artist from understanding critical thinking<br />
to the business side of what is involved in an arts career, “ said<br />
Charlie.<br />
Arts have, and continue to, lose funding. Programs like the Arts<br />
Institute rely on donation of time, material and money. Without<br />
outside funding this program would be lost. Recently the Art<br />
Institute was the beneficiary of a sold out event that featured<br />
Jazz Artist Diana Schuur. Held at the legendary Purple<br />
Room, the event raised needed funds to keep the program<br />
active.<br />
On <strong>May</strong> 7, Misty’s Consignment & M. Schwartz Jewelers<br />
will host a Charity Sale and Auction for the Arts Institute.<br />
Proceeds will benefit the Friends of the Arts Institute.<br />
Continuing the program is key. Without this program the<br />
students would miss out, not just on the art, but on learning to<br />
build working relationships; and, most importantly, learning that<br />
it is ok to dream, in Technicolor or Black and White!<br />

Promoting the VALLEY OF THE ARTS<br />
This year was no exception, “Meet The Museum” broke all records<br />
for attendances with people from around the world, meeting and<br />
greeting having a fantastic time. The fab, glam party at the Palm<br />
Springs Art Museum was the chance for a more sophisticated,<br />
chic crowd to see and be seen. Everything was top shelf; the<br />
food, people, drinks and of course the art, in this, a world class art<br />
museum. FUN FUN FUN!<br />
Now is the perfect time for a short road trip. Todd and I recently had<br />
an adventurous excursion to “Salvation Mountain” which is close<br />
to the Salton Sea on the eastern edge, near a town called Niland,<br />
CA. “Salvation Mountain” is a hand painted, somewhat man made<br />
mountain in the desert by artist Leonard Knight.<br />

of mountain are various hand painted wagons, vehicles and<br />
information about the artist. The mountain has some references<br />
to religion and/or spirituality, but Todd and I were just blown away<br />
by the love and lifelong dedication of this artist. The mountain is<br />
interactive. There are grottoes, caves and small shrines one can<br />
explore. You can also climb painted paths up to the top of the<br />
mountain. The mountain is an amazing place for photo opps and<br />
a beautiful 70 minute drive from Palm Springs. This spectacular<br />
monumental painted sculpture was featured in one of our favorite<br />
films “Into the Wild”. Admission is FREE but you can bring a gallon<br />
of any colored latex paint to help with continuous maintenance<br />
and future artistic endeavors. Sadly. the artist just passed away a<br />
few months ago but groups are continuing his legacy. We believe<br />
this short day trip on less then a tank of gas should be a must for<br />
anyone who wants to see and feel a mountain of color.<br />
As far as performance art goes, Hunter’s, located on Arenas Road<br />
in the heart of the gay mecca, has a heart stopping, hilarious,<br />
FREE show called the “Troopers”. The cast has been performing<br />
over 40 years in Southern CA. The show is reminiscent of the late<br />
great comedian, Ernie Kovacs.<br />
We laughed so hard that we thought we would need adult<br />
undergarments, LOL. The show is the 1st Saturday of every<br />
month, but is always really crowed so if you need a seat please<br />
arrive around 5:30 pm for an early night of live performance theater.<br />
What a terrific way to start a Saturday night and new month!<br />
Remember laughter is the best medicine and be prepared for some<br />
audience participation which not only makes the actors look great,<br />
but you will have the time of your life. A smile is better then any<br />
plastic surgery or botox and is free with no recovery time, and<br />
takes 10 years or more off any face immediately LOL!<br />
One last tip, if you are in need of some extra luck, we tell all of our<br />
desert visitors when they are on Palm Canyon Dr. to look for the<br />
statue of Sonny Bono and rub his nose. This is very lucky, but<br />
be sure not to pick it because it will have the opposite effect of the<br />
desired outcome.<br />

Monthly Dinner Show to Feature Top Comedy Stars from Stage and Screen<br />
PALM SPRINGS, CA – Comedy Night Palm Springs will bring an evening<br />
of hilarity to the legendary Purple Room on Saturday, <strong>May</strong> 17, <strong>2014</strong>, with a<br />
dinner show featuring top comic stars Shawn Pelofsky of NBC’s “Community”<br />
and Marie DelPrete of CBS’s “King of Queens.”<br />
“Comedy Night Palm Springs has already become a hit,” exclaimed Tony<br />
Marchese, Purple Room co-owner with Mark Van Laanen. “Our customers<br />
are excited to see comedians from TV and film perform live on our stage, and<br />
to be able to meet and talk with them in person is icing on the cake.”<br />
The monthly comedy show features the latest stand-up comics from top<br />
comedy venues in Los Angeles and New York, including the Hollywood<br />
Improv, Laugh Factory, Caroline’s on Broadway, and more. Shawn Pelofsky,<br />
the self-proclaimed “Queen of Atlantis Cruises,” has also appeared on E!’s<br />
“Chelsea Lately,” and on Showtime. Marie DelPrete, an accomplished actress,<br />
writer and standup comedienne, performed in Nickelodeon’s “NickMom Night<br />
Out,” and has a weekly show on Sirius Extreme XM called “Bad Advice.”<br />

birthday.<br />
On <strong>May</strong> 15th I will be having cervical<br />
spine surgery and I will be doing<br />
the laser surgery which is minimally<br />
invasive. We will be going to Dallas<br />
Texas for the surgery. It is actually<br />
cheaper for us to go there for the<br />
surgery than to stay here and have<br />
it done. We will return to Palm<br />
Springs on the <strong>16</strong>th. So pray that all<br />
goes well.<br />

Kathy Griffin’s tell-it-like-it-is attitude has earned her massive popularity<br />
for over two decades. You can catch the two-time Emmy winner’s standup<br />
routine at Agua Caliente’s, “The Show” on June 6th.<br />
Two-time Emmy winner, Grammy-winner, NY Times bestselling<br />
author, Guinness Book of World Record holder, 2009’s<br />
GLAAD Vanguard recipient, 2011 Trevor Project Life Award<br />
honoree, and IAVA’s 2013 Leadership in Entertainment Honoree,<br />
Kathy Griffin is a multi-faceted performer with rapid fire<br />
wit. Whether she’s tearing up stars on the red carpet, making<br />
Anderson Cooper blush on CNNs New Year’s Eve, or keeping<br />
her fans doubled over with laughter in her stand-up specials<br />
and late-night talk show appearances, the always entertaining<br />
Kathy Griffin has been making audiences around the world<br />
laugh for years.<br />
After her various TV guest spots, Kathy began gaining notice<br />
as a stand-up comedienne and landed her own “HBO Half<br />
Hour Comedy Special.” In 1998, HBO gave Kathy her own<br />
one-hour special, “A Hot Cup of Talk.” She participated in, and<br />
won “Celebrity Mole” on ABC, and then hosted the NBC reality<br />
series “Average Joe” as well as the MTV series, “Kathy’s<br />
So-Called Reality.” In 2010, Kathy took a dramatic turn on “Law<br />
and Order: SVU” where she riveted audiences with her portrayal<br />
of a lesbian activist with a secret.<br />
In August 2005, Kathy’s reality show, “Kathy Griffin: My Life on<br />
the D-List,” debuted on Bravo to rave reviews and was nominated<br />
for an Emmy for Outstanding Reality Program and the<br />
second season of “Kathy Griffin: My Life on the D-List” won<br />
Kathy her first Emmy in that same category. The third season<br />
premiered in 2007 and again won Kathy an Emmy for Outstanding<br />
Reality Program. The fourth and fifth season were<br />
nominated again for Outstanding Reality Program. The sixth<br />
and final season of “D-List” aired on Bravo during the summer<br />
of 2010.<br />
Kathy is very involved with the gay and lesbian community<br />
and was presented with the prestigious Vanguard Award at<br />
the 2009 GLAAD Media Awards. The Trevor Project awarded<br />
Kathy with Lifetime Honoree at the 2011 gala for her tremendous<br />
work with the GLBTQ community. Kathy won the 2009<br />
Gracie Award for Outstanding female lead in a Comedy Series.<br />
She was the 2007 GAVYN Awards Honorary Gay, the<br />
recipient of the 2006 Ladies Home Journal Funny Ladies<br />
We Love Award kathy recordand in 2005 she received the<br />
Lambda Legal Liberty Award. Other honors include 2003 Toys<br />
for Tots Commander’s Award, Women’s Night Special Comedic<br />
Award, Lucie Award, 2005 Aid for AIDS Friend of the Year<br />
and in 2007 was voted one of the Top 100 Irish American’s in<br />
Irish American <strong>Magazine</strong>. Kathy has also been nominated four<br />
years in a row for the Television Producer of the Year in Non-<br />
Fiction Television PGA Award.<br />
In 2013 during a live stand up performance in San Antonio,<br />
Texas, Guinness World Records honored Kathy Griffin for logging<br />
the most televised stand-up specials by any comedian<br />
(male or female, living or deceased) - 19 at the time. Kathy<br />
has since broken her own record with her 20th televised stand<br />
up special, “Kathy Griffin: Record Breaker.”

honoree.<br />
Candi Samples was was born born in in <strong>May</strong> <strong>May</strong> 2009 2009 when Mario<br />
Ortega created her her as as a contestant a in in the the Miss Miss<br />
Toucan’s Contest in in Palm Palm Springs. She She whirled and and<br />
twirled on on stage but but in in the the end end finished 1st 1st runner<br />
up. up. A few A few months later later the the winner was was stripped of of<br />
her her title title and and Candi wasall prepared to to take take up up the the<br />
crown but but the the organizers of of the the contest decided that that<br />
they they would not not give give it to it to Candi. Instead of of taking<br />
this this as reason to to fall fall to to wayside Candi took took this this<br />
disappointment and and turned it into it into change to to make a a<br />
name for for herself.<br />

Candi planned her her first first charity benefit in in September<br />

drag drag shows and and benefits around the the Palm Palm Springs<br />
area area before becoming a permanent a member of of the the<br />
“Glamzons” show. She She remained with with that that show<br />
until until moving to to San San Diego.<br />
Upon moving to to San San Diego in in 2011 2011 she she took took the the<br />
scene by by storm. She She organized a benefit a within a a<br />
few few months of of arriving in in San San Diego raising money<br />
for for Being Alive. Through the the connection with with Being<br />
Alive Alive she she was was also also one one of of the the founders of of Diving<br />
Deep for for Being Alive. That That inaugural event was was a a<br />
great success raising over over $5000 in in support of of the the<br />
programs of of Being Alive, an an agency that that provides<br />
support and and services for for individuals living with with HIV/ HIV/<br />
AIDS. That That same year year she she was was nominated for for a Nicky a Award for for Outstanding Female Entertainer. She She<br />
didn’t win win but but due due to to that that nomination she she was was on on<br />
the the map map as as a local a local celebrity.<br />
In In 2012 2012 she she was was again nominated for for the the same<br />
Nicky and and this this time time she she won. won. Later that that year year she she was was<br />
approached by by members of of the the Imperial Court of of<br />
San San Diego as as possible candidate for for Empress. After After<br />
much thought she she decided to to run run and and was was elected<br />
unanimously as as their their solo solo Monarch. She She completed<br />
her her reign on on a very a very high high note note by by building community<br />
support and and also also raising over over $80,000 in in support<br />
of of the the community charities that that The The Imperial<br />
Court supports. Due Due to to her her work work she she received a a<br />
commendation from from Toni Toni Atkins and and a Proclamation<br />
a from from then then <strong>May</strong>or Todd Todd Gloria.<br />
Since stepping down Candi has has continued her her work work<br />
in in raising money for for community charities and and has has<br />
become the the President of of the the Board of of Directors for for<br />
the the Imperial Court of of San San Diego. She She has has embraced<br />

Kitties in the Closet<br />
Part 2<br />
Early August, 1990, Los Angeles,<br />
CA. I’m taking Donald’s vitals. I’m<br />
preparing to take Donald’s blood<br />
pressure when I hear not one but<br />
several meows emanating faintly<br />
behind a wall. Guy, Donald’s partner<br />
is in the bedroom with me. Donald is<br />
still sound asleep.<br />
I take his blood pressure. It is 80 over<br />
46.<br />
His heart is beating at a steady<br />

rate. His breathing is shallow and<br />
intermittent. I look at his urine bag<br />
and it is dark. This is not uncommon with end stage hospice<br />
patients but my gut tells me Donald may not have a month.<br />
Guy sits at the foot of the bed. I can sense his anticipation as I<br />
finish taking Donald’s vital signs.<br />
I stand and turn towards Guy. His eyes are forlorn and tired. All<br />
the hope and strength in his powerful build has dissipated.<br />
“He stopped eating a few days ago and sometimes he’ll sip on<br />
water,” He says, his voice breaking.<br />
I look down at Donald. His lips are parched. His face and body<br />
emaciated. I take out some lip balm and use a Q-tip to moisten his<br />
lips. Suddenly, Donald awakens. His eyes are a brilliant cobalt blue.<br />
He takes a deep breath and says with a raspy voice, ”Who the hell<br />
are you?”<br />
”Hi Donald, I’m Michael, your new attendant from the registry.”<br />
“Michael’s come with great references.” Guy adds.<br />
“Donald, would you care for water? Are you hungry?“ I ask.<br />
“Sure, water is fine. Haven’t had much of an appetite lately,” he<br />
says.<br />
Guy leaves for water. I hear more meows growing stronger.<br />
Donald catches my puzzled gaze and says, “Don’t mind them. It’s<br />
the kitties. Our cat Cleo had a litter of six just three weeks ago.<br />
They’re the only ones in the closet in this house!”<br />
