The annual Bent Productions - Arenas Road Halloween Costume Contest 

- will take place on Friday, October 31st. Melinda Tremaglio has 

been producing this event for over 10 years, “I like this public event, it’s 

free, the street is closed, and everyone is welcomed to stroll and enjoy 

the terrific costumes and participate in the contest.”

Gennine Jackson-Francis, a phenomenal vocal talent from Los Angeles, 

has been treating the Desert to “A Musical Journey” featuring classic 

hits from music legends such as Nancy Wilson, Nat King Cole, Etta 

James, Frank Sinatra, Natalie Cole, Anita Baker, Billie Holiday, Dionne 

Warwick, Whitney Houston for the past 12 years. 

She consistently leaves her audiences spellbound and often in tears 

when she performs Whitney’s greatest hits. Her fans and faithful 

followers have pled with Gennine to do a Whitney Houston look-alike, 

sound-alike performance. Coachella Valley has been chomping at the 

bit for Gennine to perform this Tribute and the time has come.

am not interested in merely doing a ‘Whitney Impersonation’. What I

September 22, 2014 – Palm Springs, CA - The seventh annual edition 

of Cinema Diverse: The Palm Springs Gay and Lesbian Film Festival 

called it a wrap on Sunday night, September 1st, 2014, with a record 

number of screenings, a new attendance record, and a ‘diverse’ 

selection of audience favorites. 

“We screened twenty eight feature films this year, and thirty six short films,” 

said Michael C. Green, Festival Director, and Managing Director of The 

Palm Springs Cultural Center. “We beat last year’s attendance record, and 

our audiences rated 43 of our 64 films an eight or higher on a scale of one 

to ten. We actually had three feature films with scores of 9.8. To have those 

kinds of approval ratings from our audiences is quite gratifying.” 

Cinema Diverse: The Palm Springs Gay and Lesbian Film Festival, which 

one writer recently said, “seems to be shaping up to be the Academy Awards 

of Gay Movies,” has been growing consistently for the last several years, 

and has become a particular favorite for filmmakers. “We hosted filmmakers, 

producers, directors, writers, cinematographers and actors for more than 

half of our films this year,” Green continued. “We work hard to bring as 

many of them as possible to the festival. Audiences love the Q&As, and 

the opportunities to get to know the filmmakers and the actors. It makes the 

entire festival a much more personal experience.”

Filmmaking From Scraps to Hearts 

Sometimes you wonder – wow, 

where did that come from? Anna 

Fitch leaves you in that same wake. 

Anna is an Emmy award-winning 

director with a background in natural 

history filmmaking and a degree in 

Entomology.

“I grew up with a mom who happens to 

be a zoo keeper. To a small child what 

can be more exciting than an inside 

track at the zoo!” said Anna. “I love 

nature. I studied entomology – bugs, 

hardly ‘girlie’ but what an amazing 

microscopic world they inhabit! In 

college, I discovered film. I knew then 

that I had found my path. Natural 

history films.” 

After graduating from University of Massachusetts (Amherst) Anna 

went onto produce shows for National Geographic. “I produced 

episodes for the National Geographic Explorer Series. Before that I 

produced several episodes for the Man-Made series. I was involved 

with The Can, The Flashlight, and The Secret History of the Bra. That 

series focused on things that are solely the creation of man. None of 

these things are found naturally in nature. If they exist in nature, it as 

refuse” 

But even refuse is nature in its own way. “In the early 2000’s San 

Francisco was in the midst of home tear down frenzy. The real estate 

market created a whirlwind of demolition. The debris would end up 

it the city dump. Perfectly useable material was tossed aside, “said 

Anna. “I began to image that a complete home could be built from 

trash.” 

“The film, Scraphouse, had no real money but a lot of momentum. In 

2005, a team of architects, builders, structural engineers and scrap 

artists came together to build a house entirely out of garbage. We 

wanted the house to be completed before Earth Day. That gave 

us six weeks. And the house had to pass the SF Building Codes, “ 

continued Anna. “Well, we did it!” Scrap House (2006) stands as a 

testament to what one can do with imagination, discarded pieces, and 

determination. 

Her latest film with her husband, Banker White (WeOwnTv), The 

Genius Of Marian, is a PBS POV selection (www.pbs.org/pov0. 

The film deals with the tragedy of Alzheimer’s disease, the power 

of art and the meaning of family. The Genius of Marian follows Pam 

White in the early stages of Alzheimer’s disease as her son, Banker, 

documents her struggles to hang on to a sense of self. The film is a 

personal story of Alzheimer’s and its impact on victim and caretakers. 

“The emotional impact this condition has on family, caretakers, loved 

ones, is enormous. A helpless feeling. A sense of guilt. A sense of 

anger. These are normal emotions that are ignored and not treated. A 

caretaker lives with these emotions and fleeting moments of joy. Like 

Alzheimer victims, caretakers have good and bad days.” The film 

Anna and Banker continue to bring awareness of Alzheimer’s and 

their caregivers, via their project, the Genius of Caretaking. More

Miss Richfield set to perform 

at Purple Room

Thank you for taking the time for us to interview you. And we are most 

excited to see you at Purple Room this November 7th and 8th in Palm 

Springs! 

Miss Richfield’s national allure includes appearing on numerous 

television shows, including ‘The Tonight Show with Jay Leno’, ‘TO- 

DAY’ on NBC, ‘Cake Boss’(TLCnetwork). Miss Richfield has also 

served as a spokesperson for Orbitz and for the City of Philadelphia. 

LM: I see that you reign from Richfield Minnesota, is that how you became 

Miss Richfield? 

It was a beauty pageant July 4, 1981, on a simple plywood stage in Richfield. 

And like so many beauty queens, I won that title with my natural beauty, 

booming baritone vibrato and a fire that horribly disfigured all 11 other 

contestants when Trudy Olson lost control of her flaming batons. I received 

a hand-glittered sash, shiny tiara, and a power lawnmower! It was a beauty 

contest, so there was a prize!

sticks in your mind, what is that story? 

Miss Richfield: When I met Jerry Springer, who also was there that night! I felt like I 

knew him, since all of my relatives and most of Richfield has appeared on his show. 

LM: The Chicago Sun-Times describes you as “Garrison Keillor meets Mary 

Tyler Moore”. Can you expand on that? 

Miss Richfield: Well first, we are three Minnesota folks who’ve made it big. 

The comparison to Mary and I is obvious, since we’re both thin, single, 

attractive career women! And Garrison and I are often linked together, 

because people say we both have perfect faces for radio! 

LM: Also the New York Post declared Miss Richfield 1981 ‘the must-see act 

in Provincetown”, how did that feel to read that? 

Miss Richfield: Like they were reading my mind! I’ve been telling people that 

for years, so it was quite a relief to see someone finally put it into print!

LM: Your show is so multi-dimensional. Describe just a bit of what we might see. 

Miss Richfield: “Play With My Poodle” is my brand new show that serves 

both as a theatrical experience for my audience and a dating service for me! 

I sing live, show a couple educational videos on dating, and make an effort 

each night to meet as many men as possible because you never know when 

you’ll meet Mr. Right, Mr. Right Now or Mr. He’ll Do. 

LM: Do you plan to do any tv or internet shows? 

Miss Richfield: I’m always planning to be on boob tube, the YouTube or on 

anybody’s computer, but it’s quite challenging with my hectic travel schedule. 

You know I’ve visited bus depots in at least 13 different states this year 

alone because traveling has become so much more economical now that the 

Chinese branched out of laundry and into bus service! Maybe I could film a 

travel show while I’m on the bus, so I’d take 2 stones and kill a bird.

your lipstick, and you can lose your dignity! But as long as you’ve got a smile, 

you’ll always be able to find some trucker to give you a ride home!” 

LM: One of my favorite quotes of yours is “It’s important to be nice, 

but it’s nicer to be important.” Palm Springs agrees Miss Richfield is

At a recent visit to the Renaissance Hotel, we were 

fortunate to meet some wonderful artists and other 

vendors. This event was billed as the Palm Springs 

Food, Wine and Art fair. Images of these artists and 

their work, are included here for you to enjoy. Being a 

new event, and having the dream of bringing people 

together in diversity, we know this event will grow 

and achieve heights, and a level in line many other 

events, for the arts, in the Valley of the Arts.

VALLEY OF THE ARTS 

Another example of some of the best entertainment, 

was “TOP ROCK”, at the Hard Rock Hotel. In 

addition to the handsome young men and beautiful 

women, up close and personal, the show was 

sensational! The raw talent, and incredible voices of 

the performers was out of this world! What a great 

show! Our hats are off to Jim Casey, the executive 

producer of this fantastic entertaining show. There 

were a total of 16 singers, all were buff and sexy, 

complete with pole dances! Many of the songs 

were from the past, and brought back wonderful 

memories, all the way back to prom! Opps, we didn’t 

go to prom because we had to many crushes on the 

boys back then, and we were not allowed to dance 

with them. Thank you to our generous hosts, Juli 

and Levvy for treating us to this exciting evening. 

The film, “The Disappearance of Eleanor Rigby”, 

almost did not make it to the theaters. The project 

starring Jessica Chastain, James McAvoy and Viola 

Davis, is now a huge success. The Palm Springsbased 

Kim & Jim Productions had to step in with 

funding during production to enable writer-director, 

Benson, to achieve what many critics are calling, “his 

unique vision.” Now this film is receiving standing 

ovations all around the world and playing at The 

River right here in Rancho Mirage. Thank you Kim 

Waltrip and Jim Casey for supporting the arts and so 

many other events that makes this the Valley Of The 

Arts. 

We are writing this in prelude to a Fall trip back to our 

home state of Wisconsin, and Madison in particular, 

where we were born and raised. Lon is the key note 

speaker for Combat Blindness International (C.B.I.) 

30th Anniversary in hopes to bring this amazing 

organization to the forefront here in our Valley Of The 

Arts, and around the world. 

C.B.I. is using Lon Michels’ paintings when he was 

blind, to promote this gala. Now that Lon can see 

again, he lets others know of the hope of sight 

returned, to raise much needed funding for this 

nonprofit. It only costs $20 for C.B.I. to restore sight 

to 1 person, with a simple procedure for cataracts. 

Many of the patients C.B.I. helps in developing 

countries are children. 

Out of 35 million blind people in the world, 80% can 

have sight restored! Please use the website www. 

combatblindness.com , to see Lon’s paintings, he did 

while completely blind, and those now that he can 

see again. Please give if you can. This just might be 

the best investment in a gift, which will help a person 

see all the beauty and wonder of our great universe. 

When we touch the life another in such a profound 

way as restoring sight, we receive something that is 

multiplied by 10 times, to bring us love and beauty 

back into our own lives.

The annual Bent Productions - Arenas Road Halloween Costume Contest 

- will take place on Friday, October 31st. Melinda Tremaglio has

urging community members to 

attend a public meeting to discuss 

the potential naming of a local 

elementary school in honor of former 

State Senator Christine Kehoe on 

Wednesday, October 8th at 7pm. 

The meeting will take place at 

Florence Elementary School, 3914 

1st Avenue, San Diego, CA 92103. 

“Senator Kehoe has dedicated her 

life to public service and is a role 

model leader who deserves this 

honor,” stated City Commissioner 

Nicole Murray Ramirez, Chair of the 

LGBT Historic Task Force. “We urge 

all community members to show 

up on October 8th and give their 

support.” 

The community meeting will be an 

opportunity to learn more about the 

proposal and evaluate the needs 

and the process of the school 

district to accomplish a re-naming. 

A petition required to show support 

for the renaming will be circulated. 

Supporters of the Kehoe School 

naming proposal and those with 

questions will be given time to 

speak at this public meeting. 

“Having a school available 

to highlight tolerance and 

inclusiveness is important to our 

students,” said San Diego Unified 

School District Board of Trustees 

President, Kevin Beiser. “Senator 

Kehoe is a true community leader, 

trail blazer and advocate for public 

education. It would be an honor to 

see this idea become a reality.” 

The GLBT Historic Task Force was 

the organizing agent behind the 

successful street naming in honor 

of Harvey Milk and contributed to 

the Hillcrest Branch of the Wells 

Fargo Bank as it developed its 

community-specific historic mural. 

“This community-driven effort 

will help our overall goals to 

memorialize San Diego’s LGBT 

history directly in the community, 

while better connecting a local 

school with its neighborhood it

35th Evening of Hope: 

A Night at the Copa 

Stroke Recovery center’s annual black tie gala is lauded as the best party in the 

valley. Enjoy cocktails, a delicious dinner, and dancing with music by Wayne Foster 

Entertainment. Proceeds go directly to caring for survivors of stroke and traumatic 

brain injury who, along with their families, receive free year-round, long-term rehabilitation, 

counseling and education at the center. 

The event will be held on Saturday, November 22 at the Rivera Palm Springs, 1600

(Part Two)

Summer, 2014. Lake Tahoe, california. My friend 

Ramon and I are sitting in the cockpit of his 22 ft. 

sloop. He’s explaining the fundamentals of sailing to 

me. The cockpit has our backpacks, a cooler filled 

with water, sandwiches, and lots of watermelon. I 

am enthralled with his melodic voice and flood of 

new information. 

Ramon takes my hand and holds it firmly. We are 

seated opposite one another in the cockpit of the 

boat. 

“Michael, I want to stress that safety on the boat 

is paramount. There is a hierarchy on a boat to 

maintain safety at all times. I am the captain and 

everyone else is part of the crew. The crew is 

affectionately referred to as Boat Monkeys. This 

comes from a long history as sailors would jump 

from one mast to another.” 

“So today I’m your Number One Boat Monkey, 

right?” I ask. 

“Absolutely!” He says gently releasing my hand. 

“Life jackets are worn at all times while sailing and 

come off after anchoring.” 

“Good to know,” I say. 

I’m going to start removing the canvassing so we 

can go down below and explore the cabin,” Ramon 

says. 

“can I help? I’m eager to feel my way through.” We 

both stand and Ramon shouts a warning. 

“careful, you’re walking towards the boom!” 

“The Boom?” I ask. 

He puts my hand on this metal contraption with a 

sail tied to it. This is attached to the mast and will 

sometimes move when the sail is up and the winds 

change direction. It can knock one off the boat 

or injure one’s head. They don’t call it a boom for 

nothing,” he jokes. 

“yikes!” I say. “Where’s my life jacket?” 

We both laugh. 

”Help me unbuckle this top canvass. I’m going 

to open the main hatch. Are you ready to climb 

below?” 

“Aye aye, Mi capitan!”

have become a valley tradition, and regular customers eagerly anticipate their 

return each Fall. “We’ve already had emails and calls from people asking when the 

markets will open,” said Paul Palodichuk, General Manager of the certified Farmers’ 

Markets. “This is the beginning of our seventh full season here in the desert, and 

everyone is excited to begin this new season. We have most of our local favorites 

returning, and we’ve added some new farms and value added real-food vendors. We 

have expanded our hours at our Palm Desert Market on Wednesdays (now 8 am 

to 1pm) to allow residents and businesses more access during lunch hours. Look 

for farm fresh lunch items to be added at our Palm Desert location as the season
