<strong>UDC</strong> at a Glance<br />
History and Mission<br />
Chartered in 1974 as an urban land-grant institution with an open admissions policy,<br />
<strong>the</strong> <strong>University</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>District</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Columbia</strong> (<strong>UDC</strong>) is <strong>the</strong> only public institution <strong>of</strong> higher<br />
education in <strong>the</strong> <strong>District</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Columbia</strong>. A comprehensive university <strong>of</strong>fering quality,<br />
affordable post-secondary education to <strong>District</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Columbia</strong> residents at <strong>the</strong> certificate,<br />
associate’s, baccalaureate, and graduate levels, <strong>UDC</strong> provides programs that will<br />
prepare students for immediate entry into <strong>the</strong> workforce, for <strong>the</strong> next level <strong>of</strong> education,<br />
for specialized employment opportunities, and for lifelong learning.<br />
Campus and Facilities<br />
The main campus <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>University</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>District</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Columbia</strong> is located at Connecticut<br />
and Van Ness Street in northwest Washington. Some <strong>UDC</strong> programs are <strong>of</strong>fered at<br />
Reagan National Airport and at o<strong>the</strong>r <strong>of</strong>f-campus sites. All <strong>University</strong> buildings are easily<br />
reached by public transportation. On-campus facilities include up-to-date equipment<br />
in many fields, including a printing laboratory equipped with computerized typesetting<br />
equipment and <strong>of</strong>fset presses, computer laboratories, laboratories for <strong>the</strong> physical and<br />
life sciences, fine arts studios, music practice rooms, and media learning laboratories.<br />

Faculty<br />
The <strong>University</strong>’s faculty is organized into nine departments within <strong>the</strong> College <strong>of</strong> Arts<br />
and Sciences; four departments within <strong>the</strong> School <strong>of</strong> Engineering and Applied<br />
Sciences; two departments within <strong>the</strong> School <strong>of</strong> Business and Public Administration;<br />
and <strong>the</strong> Learning Resources division. There is no separate graduate faculty; most<br />
faculty members who teach graduate courses also teach undergraduate courses. All<br />
faculty members serve as advisors or academic counselors.<br />
Undergraduate Degree Programs<br />
<strong>UDC</strong> <strong>of</strong>fers 47 programs leading to a baccalaureate degree and 23 programs leading<br />
to an associate’s degree. The <strong>University</strong>’s undergraduate division is comprised <strong>of</strong><br />
three schools: <strong>the</strong> College <strong>of</strong> Arts and Sciences; <strong>the</strong> School <strong>of</strong> Engineering and<br />
Applied Sciences; and <strong>the</strong> School <strong>of</strong> Business and Public Administration.<br />
Athletics<br />
<strong>UDC</strong> participates in <strong>the</strong> National Collegiate Athletic Association, Division II. Men’s<br />
teams include basketball, cross-country, soccer, and tennis; women’s teams include<br />
basketball, cross-country, volleyball, and tennis.<br />

Costs<br />
Undergraduate tuition for full-time resident students is $75 per credit hour; for nonresident<br />
students, tuition is $185 per credit hour. There is an additional student fee <strong>of</strong><br />
$135—to cover student activities and miscellaneous services—per student.<br />
Financial Aid<br />
The <strong>University</strong>’s student aid program is designed to meet <strong>the</strong> needs <strong>of</strong> eligible students<br />
by providing grants, part-time employment, and loans. The amount <strong>of</strong> assistance awarded<br />
is governed by <strong>the</strong> availability <strong>of</strong> funds, a student’s academic progress, and <strong>the</strong> amount<br />
<strong>of</strong> financial need. Students can complete <strong>the</strong> Free Application for Federal Student Aid<br />
(FAFSA) to determine eligibility for all federal and institutional aid programs administered<br />
by <strong>the</strong> <strong>University</strong>’s Office <strong>of</strong> Financial Aid. The application deadline is March 15.
<strong>UDC</strong>: A Tradition <strong>of</strong><br />
Excellence<br />
The <strong>University</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>District</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Columbia</strong> (<strong>UDC</strong>) is at once<br />
very old and very new. Founded in 1976, <strong>UDC</strong> has origins<br />
through its predecessor institutions since 1851. <strong>UDC</strong><br />
meets <strong>the</strong> higher education needs and aspirations <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />
people <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> nation's capital through excellence in teaching,<br />
research, and public service.<br />
The <strong>University</strong> maintains an open admissions policy for<br />
<strong>District</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Columbia</strong> residents who have earned a high<br />
school diploma or a General Education Development<br />
(GED) certificate. Our student-friendly staff anxiously await<br />
