UDC at a Glance
History and Mission
Chartered in 1974 as an urban land-grant institution with an open admissions policy,
the University of the District of Columbia (UDC) is the only public institution of higher
education in the District of Columbia. A comprehensive university offering quality,
affordable post-secondary education to District of Columbia residents at the certificate,
associate’s, baccalaureate, and graduate levels, UDC provides programs that will
prepare students for immediate entry into the workforce, for the next level of education,
for specialized employment opportunities, and for lifelong learning.
Campus and Facilities
The main campus of the University of the District of Columbia is located at Connecticut
and Van Ness Street in northwest Washington. Some UDC programs are offered at
Reagan National Airport and at other off-campus sites. All University buildings are easily
reached by public transportation. On-campus facilities include up-to-date equipment
in many fields, including a printing laboratory equipped with computerized typesetting
equipment and offset presses, computer laboratories, laboratories for the physical and
life sciences, fine arts studios, music practice rooms, and media learning laboratories.

Faculty
The University’s faculty is organized into nine departments within the College of Arts
and Sciences; four departments within the School of Engineering and Applied
Sciences; two departments within the School of Business and Public Administration;
and the Learning Resources division. There is no separate graduate faculty; most
faculty members who teach graduate courses also teach undergraduate courses. All
faculty members serve as advisors or academic counselors.
Undergraduate Degree Programs
UDC offers 47 programs leading to a baccalaureate degree and 23 programs leading
to an associate’s degree. The University’s undergraduate division is comprised of
three schools: the College of Arts and Sciences; the School of Engineering and
Applied Sciences; and the School of Business and Public Administration.
Athletics
UDC participates in the National Collegiate Athletic Association, Division II. Men’s
teams include basketball, cross-country, soccer, and tennis; women’s teams include
basketball, cross-country, volleyball, and tennis.

Costs
Undergraduate tuition for full-time resident students is $75 per credit hour; for nonresident
students, tuition is $185 per credit hour. There is an additional student fee of
$135—to cover student activities and miscellaneous services—per student.
Financial Aid
The University’s student aid program is designed to meet the needs of eligible students
by providing grants, part-time employment, and loans. The amount of assistance awarded
is governed by the availability of funds, a student’s academic progress, and the amount
of financial need. Students can complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid
(FAFSA) to determine eligibility for all federal and institutional aid programs administered
by the University’s Office of Financial Aid. The application deadline is March 15.

through its predecessor institutions since 1851. UDC
meets the higher education needs and aspirations of the

school diploma or a General Education Development

either by Metro bus or Metrorail (the UDC-Van Ness station on
