From the Directors’ Desk
The untimely demise of our student, James Peter Baa, due to brain malaria has cast a
shadow of gloom over the entire Institute. The accursed disease has claimed a
victim who was full of promise and enthusiastic about life. His friends and teachers
are devastated by this loss. We stand by his family and friends together as the NIST family
in this dark hour as we mourn his loss.
The new team at NIST-ISTE is going full guns to make SANKALP ‘09 a “better than the
best” event. The events are more exciting, challenging and highly competitive. I hope students
from all over Orissa and the country who will congregate here for SANKALP ’09 will make
a stupendous effort to make this a successful event. After all, the home team NIST holds the Championship
Trophy from the last time and would like to retain it this year too!
The NIST has held a number of faculty development programs in the last one-two months. Scientists and researchers
from all over the country have come to our Institute as resource persons for the workshops. They are highly
appreciative of the Institute’s infrastructure, research facilities and core competency of our faculty and most
importantly the discipline of our students and the beauty of our campus. Our special thanks to the FDP
coordinators, faculty and staff who made them successful. On a special note: the first ever workshop on creative
writing brought out a great many hidden talent among our students: our future Chetan Bhagat’s and Anita Desaithanks
Dr. Raja Rao.
We wish all the students, faculty, staff and their families a wonderful Durga Puja and Dussehra.
Prof. Sangram Mudali
From the Editors’ Desk
The dust has started settling down after the fresh batch of B. Tech, MCA, MBA and PGDM students strated
treading on the campus of their alma mater. With fresh hopes and aspirations, students have started their journey
of exploring education through new dimensions. Being exposed to plethora of activities, including their involvement
in various on-campus clubs: Robotics Club, Literary club, Electronics Club, Club Excel, AD Club, Innova Club,
Photography Club, Musical Society, Renewable Energy Club etc., other than their regular studies, definitely
provides them an edge over others. As an addition, surpassing the past records, nearly 200 students of our
Institute have bagged SGPA> 9.0 in the even semester university examinations, thus setting a new bench mark
for their successors. Students get ample of opportunities to update themselves technologically through various
workshops, seminars, conferences - they imbibe the knack of creating something out of nothing, as a work of art,
through creative writing workshops – they fall in love with the passion of music through the vibes of NIST musical
society – they showcase their best of talents in the largest technical symposium, SANKALP & the institute’s
annual youth fest, WAVES, and surely the list is endless.
SANKALP, the largest ISTE sponsored technical symposium, being on the verge of getting explored, calls upon
every participant to carry along the spirit of participating and winning among a crowd of diverse regions and
disciplines.
Among all hapiness and celebrations, we, NISTians have definitely taken a pause to console oue bereaved souls
which has faced an irreparable loss at the sad, and untimely demise of one our beloved students, James Peter
Baa, a B. Tech. 5 th semester student. Our prayer before the Almighty, May the departed soul rest in peace.
When I look back...
Rajasannu Reddy, De Paul School, Berhampur-10
When I look back,
I feel the sanguine sunrise crack
With the trees so lashing,
and the wind so dashing.
I could feel the blue cloud so gentle,
resting on the mountain top,
As the small particles on the earth’s mantle
lying on the earth’s floor.
4 of 18

There’s a reflection from the prism so bright,
As the success has arrived like a light.
And when the clouds appear so dark,
It appears just to be the failure’s mark.
Oh! What a tender, compassionate friend,
Who made the need of my heart,
Shadows dispelling- with joy I’m telling,
He made all the darkness depart.
Heaven came down,
And glory filled my soul.
When at the cross,
He made me whole.
I could feel the presence,
by her essence.
As shining as gold,
Who is there to mould.
When there is a sudden turn,
I could feel the hailstones fall,
With the slow riftling of multicoloured birds,
Which make the rainbow so charm.
The heavens being so blue,
just proclaiming to you.
With the glory of God,
in nature so good.
The song of the birds so delight,
Which make the world so bright.
When again I look back,
I found myself in heaven.
The blooming flowers so beautiful,
and the hauling cock so wonderful.
Feel as if I’m in the garden of heaven,
went aside to meet the final destiny.
Lured by the love of success,
who followed me all across.
Now, its the time of the twinkling stars,
whose sparkles met me at the end.
But the wind so swift left me to my destiny,
As if I were His faithful buddy to Him.
I felt well secured,
when I found the Nature’s care.
Who left me in my house,
and departed away to meet her spouse.
Handycooler Personal Air Conditioner
Someone asked me “Is the summer over?” Well I had no answer because I was
sweating like hell. Then I saw this. The new “HANDYCOOLER PERSONAL AIR
CONDITIONER”. So, now you have the ac in your pocket. Evaporative cooling is
the trick here. It is a device a little bigger than a cordless phone with a sponge on
which you simply have to drizzle some water. The fan draws air over the damp sponge,
cooling it by up to 25 degrees Fahrenheit. The ducted fan rotates to move the air
where you want it. It requires a quartet of AA batteries and rechargeable batteries can
be a good option in a long run. Four batteries will bring you around 5 hours of cooling,
but you can always opt for USB power whenever your computer or notebook is turned on. The Handycooler
Personal Air Conditioner will retail for $39.99 a pop.
Sennheiser Mini Headphones are foldable
Well, I prefer headphones over earphones and earbuds. But, when it’s the question of portability I have to
scratch my head hundreds times. Hey! Wait a minute now we have the new
foldable “Sennheiser Mini Headphones” which are a little smaller than the rest
and will fold up to make them even more compact.
The headphones have powerful transducers with neodymium magnets for clear
and natural sound. The cable itself allows you to control the volume on the cord
itself. The product will hit the market this month. So, get ready to have one for
your ears.
News Desk
Mr. Pratyush Mishra
B. Tech., 5 th sem, Team e_news
What dominated the news headlines for the month was Andhra Pradesh’s Chief Minister, YSR’s untimely
and tragic demise when his chopper crashed into the hills due to bad weather conditions. Speculations
were high about Maoist groups abducting the chief minister due to the ongoing Bandh by the Maoists
during this accident. This news shook the entire political community of the nation leaving cracks in the congressled-state-government
which got clearly exposed as the names began to pour as the next heir to the “Gaddi”.
What was another concern to the country was the rising cases of swine flu. While majority of the educational
institutes and offices in the infected areas were kept in quarantine, the state saw its first case in an NIT student.
The toll has already crossed nearly 50 with no specific cure for the killer virus. The BJP found its ideals fading
away with members of the party following Mr. L.K Advani in their praise of Jinnah. The BJP seems to be losing
its aides with the RSS going clear off the mess by the BJP members. The border of the country remained active
with Pakistan and China continuing their attempts for acquisition of Indian territory with the Chinese troops even
crossing the border and painting parts of the territory RED. The tension between India & Pakistan reached
heights with reports of Pak missiles being fired to the territory. Pakistan, however, denied any such incidents. The
situation at the Line of Actual Control remained grim with reports suggesting China occupying Indian areas
slowly. The Indian army finally has its Women battalion of the BSF ready for deployment at the highly sensitive
Indo-Pak border. Startling revelations by the former Pak supremo Pervez Musharraf about the use of US
military aid in building up of defense against India gave the diplomatic talks between the two countries a setback.
The international politics remained active with Karzai holding a lead in the partial Afghan vote count. Switching
over to technology, the Microsoft-Yahoo deal in the US further deepened with no clear message about the
outcomes. Motorola finally unveiled the Google phone but to a muted response. The state however saw a series
of scams…the mining and the cheat fund scam...to name a few. The Maoist rampage continued with the rebels
attacking forest offices in Sundergarh, blowing up railway station in Rourkela and even entering into the mineral
rich district of Keonjhar. Meanwhile the banned CPI (Maoist) carried out abductions of five railway employees
and have asked for a swap of the hostages with 30 arrested tribal leaders. The speculations about shifting from
the state were rubbished by controversial Posco project committee. The key indices of the sensex touched the
15k mark as the markets showed signs of improving. JET airways went through a tough time with the pilots going
on a strike to protest against the sacking of two employees and finally the matter being sorted out nearly after 15
international and 137 domestic flight cancellations. Anti-ragging laws set by the Apex Court became stricter with
various help-lines being launched to curb the activities. P.C’s visit to the U.S bore some results with U.S pressurizing
the Pakistani government for cooperation regarding the Mumbai attacks. The CBSE board finally announced its
plans of making the Class-X exams optional from 2011 and introducing the grading systems from this year
onwards. This move is being termed as path-breaking and is expected to cheer lakhs of students across the
nation. The state technical education met with a grim situation where seats were left vacant even after a 2 nd JEE
being conducted. Switching over to sports, F-1 is finally coming to India despite the sports ministry denying
recognition of F-1 as a sport. The Men in Blue were finally in action after a gap, putting up a brilliant show in the
first match->climbing to the top spot in ODI rankings & then losing the spot in the very next match against Sri-
Lanka. The tennis fraternity saw its 16 top seeds advancing to the 2 nd round for the first time in this U.S open.
However this U.S open, it was India vs India as both Mahesh Bhupati and Leander Paes with their respective
partners advanced through the stages setting up the final clash. Pankaj Advani became the World Billiard’s
Champion..to add another star to his legacy. Brazil, Spain and Italy advanced into the World Cup (Football)
through the qualifiers with the French tied with Portugal in the WC qualifiers.
Dussehra is already knocking…wishing all the readers a great vacation ahead. HAPPY DUSSEHRA! :)
abuzz with excitement with special joy for Indian fans.
The cricketing world was in for a major upheaval at the top with the mighty Aussies being humbled by the English
ensuing ODI series Australia were back at their dominant best buoyed by the return of Brett lee and are leading
4-0 in the 7 match series. Also team India made a winning start to their new season with a victory in sri-lanka, thus
gearing up for the champions trophy.
There was joy for Force India at F-1 with Giancarlo Fisichella finishing 2nd and securing the first points for his
team at the Belgian grand prix with only a safety car punctuating him and 1 st placed kimi raikonnen. But his
consequent move to Ferrari was a great loss for force India. In the next race at Monza another force India driver
Adrian sutil finished 4 th Rounding off a fantastic fortnight,.
In the world of boxing vijender singh became the first Indian pugilist to secure a podium finish winning bronze at
the world boxing championships in middleweight category.
In the ever exciting soccer pitch there were places at world cup finals at stake and 5-time champions Brazil and
European champs Spain danced their way to the finals in ever dominant fashion. Also England, Netherlands,
Ghana, South Korea and North Korea have booked their berths for South Africa while other teams will battle it
out in the final few matches to be held in October.
In club football Manchester city gunned down the gunners at home to scalp their first big four victim. While it was
routine affair for other big guns. Elsewhere Barca, Bayern Munich and inter Milan won their matches with ease.
The us open has been set ablaze with the recent controversy surrounding Serena Williams with her on court
behavior and also with the performance of 17 year old American Melanie Oudin who has accounted for all the top
Russian divas. Super mom Kim clijsters has made a remarkable comeback reaching the finals. in the doubles final
Indian ace Leander Paes defeated compatriot Mahesh Bhupathi.
We pledge to bring in more thrill and excitement the next time around.
Cynosure of All Eyes
Ms. Neena Choudhary
B. Tech., 3 rd Sem.
Hello readers! Last month was dedicated to Indian politics and believe me it was really very difficult to get
you the top story of the month. Jaswant Singh being expelled from BJP for praising Jinnah in his recent
book and the book being banned in the BJP ruling state Gujarat stole the limelight. The death of Dr. YSR
Reddy due to his chopper crash which was then followed by death of his supporters has created a storm in the
whole country. And then there were various other issues like Indian politics in Indian cricket team and Kapil
Sibal’s declaration to make Class-X exams optional. With all these happenings around, Cynosure Of All Eyes
would like to draw your attention towards the current educational scenario in our country.
In the 21 st century, knowledge is the most valuable resource. The long-term success of our future generation is
based on its ability to innovate and adapt. And education plays the most crucial role in that. Education is about
learning, the joy of that process, thus self-discovery is far more relevant than to be taught. In India we can
recognize a child as a school going student only with his heavy ‘bastas’ and books which weigh even more than
him. This thought has begun to change now, at least at the grass root level and for this all thanks goes to Mr. Kapil
Sibal. It was really brave on his part to come across with the idea of making the Class-X CBSE board exams
optional and evaluate the students via grades. Well, we all know the number of interviews and cross-questions
that he had to face. It’s truly very difficult to try to bring around a change in a well established system. We Indians
boast of producing world-class engineers, doctors and scientists but here arises a question. Is education limited
only to physics and biology text books? Each one of us knows the answer, but we are afraid of taking a step in
a different direction. Yes, a new trend of producing managers has begun now. But a recent study reports that
mere 25% of India-trained engineers and 15% of finance and accounting professionals have the skill sets to work
for multinational companies. Is this our world-class standard??? The dismal quality of education in many private
institutes is such that even the curriculum is not in sync with the industry’s need. Students are trained in Pascal and
Fox Pro despite knowing that these computer languages have become archaic long ago.
In our education system, students need to understand that why are they pursuing a particular course and where
would it take them in future. Unfortunately, at present not many students are aware that why are they in a
particular course. And majority of students which most of our institutes churn out every year are not at all
employable. We need to prepare a road map for this type of a new curriculum. The ‘attitude’ has to change. The
tutor-driven curriculum has to be transferred into student-driven curriculum. And for this we do need some real
role models other than Hrithik Roshan and MS Dhoni. Though there are some icons like NR Murthy but that’s
not enough. We need more such role models who can inspire our young generation.
The need of the hour is to implement a holistic educational system that would produce candidates which can be
absorbed in industries. We have to be more receptive to new ideas and suggestions. Significant efforts are
required for change in the entrenched attitudes of parents and teachers towards the practice of measuring the
child’s progress and interests. It is good to adapt to change and be a part of it rather pretending to be ignorant.
It is never late. The future of lakhs of students is at stake. And before it gets too late we have to arouse the
innovator inside us.
