DEAR SUMMER SEARCH COMMUNITY: SUMMER SEARCH CELEBRATES ANOTHER REC Our events are important to us as they bring in approximately one third of our annual b We are so grateful to everyone who got involved and lent support. We are writing this letter at the end of a particularly rich and exciting summer season. The last of our 540 students are returning home from their summer adventures. As always, we are incredibly grateful to our 56 summer program partners who make these extraordinary opportunities possible year in and year out. We are also writing this just after the conclusion of our first ever National Alumni Summit. This event brought together 200 alumni from all offices and from 18 years of Summer Search’s existence. It was an extraordinary moment! The event was organized by Program Director and Summer Search alumna Stacey Thompson ’97 and facilitated by alumni throughout the two days. For both of us, it was a moment of clarity when we realized that Summer Search will be carried forward and sustained by its graduates. That is the greatest legacy any program can hope for. Boston Honors Ken Merin of the Charles Hayden Foundation – The 2007 Leadership Dinner, Learning to Fly, was a stunning success, with over 500 people in attendance and a record-breaking $596,509 raised, far exceeding expectations! Ken Merin of the Charles Hayden Foundation was honored as the first ever recipient of the Summer Search Boston Leadership Award. Special thanks go to Premier Sponsor Loomis, Sayles & Co., Event Chairs Lummy and Ben Gannett, and the generous sponsors who helped our students take flight by funding airline travel to their life-changing summer programs! New York City Thanks Cocktail Hosts – A special thanks to board member Diana Barrett and her husband Bob Vila, as well as board member Sarah O’Hagan and her husband Peter for hosting two successful and engaging board cocktails during the winter months. We welcome our friends and supporters to our Young Leadership Cocktail on September 20th, 2007 as well as our inaugural Leadership Gala on March 11, 2008. As Summer Search builds community among its students and alumni, we are reminded of the extraordinary community – all of you – that has invested, brought this program to life and seen it through its first phase. We are incredibly proud to share this newsletter with you and do so with a deep sense of gratitude for the many gifts you have given. Hang on to your hats for the very exciting time ahead! Thank you, Jay Jacobs Chief Executive Officer Linda Mornell Founder and President Board chair Liz Hale with speaker and recent alumna Jessica Acosta ’07 with at the 2007 Where Change Begins Luncheon in Mill Valley North San Francisco Bay Quadruples Donations – The second annual Where Change Begins Luncheon, co-chaired by board chair Liz Hale and board member Erin Elliott, raised $185,000 – significantly more than last year! Special thanks go to corporate sponsors: RAB Motors, Wells Fargo Private Banking/Clyde Ostler, BACKROADS, Morgan Stanley/Roger La Voie, Terra Search Partners and to the 300 individuals in attendance. Philadelphia Thanks Trustee Dana Devon and Neil Sand for Hosting Cocktail Event – Summer Search Philadelphia thanks trustee Dana Devon, and her husband Neil Sand, who graciously hosted a beautiful summer cocktail event at their home. Dana’s passion, encouragement and involvement have helped open doors to a broader Philadelphia community. What a gift to our students to have the support of a strong and compassionate community behind them to enhance their belief in themselves. The mission of Summer Search is to find resilient low-income high school students and inspire them to become responsible and altruistic leaders by providing year-round mentoring, life-changing summer experiences, college advising, and a lasting support network. We also thank Domineek, Michael, Hector and Lucky, students from the first class of Summer Search Philadelphia, who greeted guests and Ramatu Kallon, Boston alumnus ’06, who spoke with integrity and confidence about her long journey with the Summer Search program. 2 The Year in Review/Event Report
ORD YEAR OF SUPPORT AROUND THE COUNTRY udget. 2007 saw a record year of event attendance and donations across all offices. Seattle alumna ’07 Ti’esh Harper speaks eloquently about her journey with Summer Search at the Second Annual Where Change Begins Breakfast on May 22, 2007 Andrea Fuller and Liebe Patterson Drive San Francisco’s Most Successful Event in History – Over 400 supporters, most of whom were new to Summer Search, turned out at the San Francisco Leadership Luncheon. Attendees were moved and inspired by alumni Cang Quach ’98, Stephanie Garcia ’98, and Leadership Award recipient Teodora Ildefonzo-Olmo ’99, who spoke about the positive change Summer Search inspires in its students, their families and communities. Co-chairs Andrea Fuller and Liebe Patterson led the event for a second year, raising over $700,000, and making Summer Search history! SAVE THE DATE: 2007 EVENTS New York City Young Leadership Committee Cocktail An evening of music, hors d’oeuvres, and a silent auction hosted by and for young professionals to celebrate our students. Mid-October (date and time TBA) Date, Time and Location TBA Seattle Surpasses Fundraising Goal at Second Breakfast Event – Thanks to the generosity and support of the Seattle community and our 166 guests, Summer Search Seattle raised over $125,000 at the second annual Where Change Begins Breakfast! Special thanks go to corporate sponsors Carney Badley Spellman, Wentworth, Hauser and Violich, and ShareBuilder Corporation. We are grateful to San Francisco alumnus, Sasha Kovriga ’90 and Seattle alumna Ti’esh Harper ’07 who warmed our hearts with inspiring speeches. Philadelphia Young Professionals Cocktail Hour An evening event hosted this fall by Summer Search Philadelphia to raise awareness among young professionals. Boston Executive Board Create Five For Five – Over the past few years, Boston alumni have taken the idea of “giving back” to a new level. At the annual Summer Alumni Party, Alumni Executive Board Chair Derrick Duplessy ’98 and Alumni Executive Board Member Denise Rodrigues ’01 presented the Five for Five campaign as a vehicle for giving back and to honor the 5th Anniversary of Boston’s Alumni Association. For those in college, the recommended donation is $5, and $25 for alumni who have graduated. Donations will fund alumni scholarships as well as provide emergency transition funds for rising college freshmen. ATTENTION ALUMNI! As part of our ongoing efforts to facilitate personal and professional networking opportunities amongst Summer Search Alumni, we have developed two new exciting resources: Online Summer Search Community. Check out the launch of the Summer Search Alumni Website and Directory in mid-September, where you can update your contact information and connect with other alumni nationally! Through CAN, alumni are exposed to a broad network of professionals who can provide career-specific guidance and teach the “soft skills” necessary to help you navigate your job search and ultimately find a satisfying career.
