CENTRE MAKES WIN 

A £30m SPLASH 

BOLTON’S state-of-the-art 

leisure centre has opened 

its doors for the first time. 

The £30.6 million Bolton 

One, on Moor Lane, opened to 

the public on February 1. 

The flagship health, leisure 

and research complex is a 

partnership between Bolton 

Council, NHS Bolton and the 

University. 

The council is providing 

leisure and fitness facilities 

which are the first part of the 

complex to open. A 25 metre 

swimming pool with seating 

for 250 spectators is the key 

component of the centre. 

A therapeutic hydrotherapy 

pool for people with 

disabilities; a 70-station gym; 

a community gym which is 

accessible for disabled users; 

a fitness suite, and an aerobics 

studio are also available. 

Council chiefs offered everyone 

in Bolton the chance to try 

out the pool for free and 

around 2,000 people have 

taken up the offer. Also up 

for grabs were 2,012 free 

places on exercise classes for 

the month of February. Some 

places are still available – call 

in to Bolton One for more 

information.

has a sports hall and 50ft 

climbing wall within Bolton

public from February 27. 

The university will also provide 

a Centre of Excellence for 

Health and Wellbeing, which 

will include clinical skills laboratory 

facilities; a rehabilitation 

suite, including 

rehabilitation clinics; sports 

injury and exercise and conditioning 

clinics, and teaching 

and seminar rooms. 

The NHS will provide a 

range of outpatient services, 

among which will be breast 

screening; orthopaedics; 

rheumatology; thoracics, and 

radiological and therapy support. 

A GP practice will also 

be based at Bolton One.

IN BRIEF . . . 

THE number of students applying to 

the University of Bolton has dropped 

by more than five per cent. Tuition fee 

increases are being blamed for the fall 

in applicants. This time last year the 

applications to study in the town 

soared by 23 per cent as the race to 

get a university place before the hike 

in tuition fees intensified. 

STUDENTS are expected to move 

into the former Pack Horse Hotel by 

September. The landmark Bolton 

town centre building is to undergo a 

£3 million revamp and be converted 

into a 100-bedroom luxury halls of 

residence. Each room will have a 

plasma TV and 65 of the rooms will 

have their own “kitchenette”. The 

other 35 rooms will have shared 

kitchen facilities. 

A LIBRARY and cafe will be opened in 

a popular community facility, which is 

now run by a team of volunteers after 

council bosses slashed its funding. 

The historic Barlow Institute, in Bolton 

Road, Edgworth, was dealt a blow 

when Blackburn with Darwen Council 

announced it was to withdraw its 

annual funding of £42,000 and 

withdraw all paid staff. A committee 

took over the running of the institute 

and although the council will continue 

to maintain the building, running costs 

are the committee’s responsibility. 

THE butterfly house at Moss Bank 

Park could reopen this summer. It 

comes after Bolton Council agreed 

a 12-month trial arrangement with 

the Animal World Conservation 

Action Project.

First aider turns 

into beastie boy 

Tony in full beast costume 

EVERY now and then Tony Lee 

hears the distant call of the wild and 

feels the urge to don a big cat costume 

and prowl the moors. 

But the 52 year-old father of two, who 

works for a Bolton company, is not barking 

mad – he’s purrfectly sane as he’s 

merely getting his claws into his role as 

the official ‘Beast of Bodmin Moor!’ 

The beast is supposedly a wild panther 

seen by many roaming the moors, 

but Tony got the ‘job’ after he wrote to 

a group of Cornish businessmen who run 

a marketing group entitled The Best of 

Bodmin Moor. 

They invited him to a meeting and 

he turned up in a tiger skin cat suit 

after being unable to secure a panther 

style costume. He was presented with 

a contract, certificate and a plastic box 

of chocolate mice and his life as the official 

Beast of Bodmin Moor began. 

But it’s a world away from Tony’s serious 

day job at Bolton-based training 

company, Encompass, where he trains 

pub, hotel and restaurant staff in first 

aid techniques. 

Encompass is part of temporary pub 

management company, Convivial Management 

Services (CMS), which uses 

Tony’s training skills in its outlets all 

over the country. 

Tony also organises fire marshal courses, 

how to handle and lift sessions and 

food safety and hygiene courses, among 

many others. 

CMS helps keep ailing pubs and hotels 

open and trading on behalf of the banks 

and insolvency practitioners and as part 

of those contracts Encompass makes 

sure all staff receives training in fire safety 

and first aid techniques. 

Using his first name Michael, Tony 

has also acquired a reputation as an 

author of three books of collections of 

outrageous letters. 

These range from inventive job applications, 

such as the Beast of Bodmin 

Moor, to requests for unusual and often 

non-existent posts or items, such as 

searching for a Freudian slip for his wife. 

Other job applications have included: 

Harbourmaster for Wigan Pier, the new 

hunchback of Notre Dame, The Man in 

the Moon, Old Father Time, principal 

stable boy for the Four Horses of the 

Apocalypse, Witchfinder General and 

the King of the Castle. 

He also applied to become Lady Godiva’s 

horse but backed off after the 

organisers of the parade said that to 

qualify he would have to be gelded! 

He wrote to Warburtons Bakery asking 

them to design a loaf which would 

guarantee dropped slices of bread would 

fall buttered side up and the company 

responded with a humorous poem.

Hate crime 

in focus 

UNIVERSITY of Bolton’s photography 

students will showcase their creative 

talents at a hate crime exhibition at 

Bolton Central Library. 

The photographs show the students’ 

interpretations of hate crime 

and the impact it can have on individuals 

affected. 

A hate crime or incident is any incident 

that is perceived by the victim or 

any other person as being motivated 

by a prejudice or hatred in relation to 

someone’s disability, race, religion, 

gender, sexual orientation, lifestyle 

or dress code. 

The exhibition is in support of 

Bolton’s approach to tackling and preventing 

all types of hate crime and 

encouraging victims and witnesses to 

report hate crime. 

Rotary Burns’ Night 

WESTHOUGHTON Rotary 

Club’s first ever Burns’ 

Night included all the traditional 

elements of pipes, 

poetry and haggis but the 

guests had an extra duty 

to perform. When they sat 

down to eat, they found 

ballot papers to vote for 

the best poetry recitation 

of the evening. 

It was won narrowly by 

Rotarian Jim Webster for his 

spirited rendition of the 

Address to a Louse. Senior 

Vice President Bernard 

Howes was second with is 

vigorous recital of Address to 

a Toothache.

A raffle in aid of President

raised £285.

PLANS for a £3 million redevelopment of 

Barton Grange Garden Centre in Bolton 

have been put on hold. The Wigan Road 

centre in Deane is earmarked for a new 

farm shop and other changes, which 

already have planning permission and 

could create more than 30 new jobs. But 

now the firm is looking again at some of 

the details, meaning the redevelopment 

work will not now start until later this year 

or even early 2013. 

PLANS to convert an empty 

Westhoughton shop into a 

hairdressers have been given the go 

ahead. Lewis Sproston, from Ather 

ton, and his girlfriend, applied to 

transform Excelsior Press, a closed 

printing shop in Market Street, 

Westhoughton, into a hair salon. 

TOWN Hall bosses are giving staff 

physiotherapy and counselling sessions 

to stop them going off sick after the 

latest figures revealed employees take an 

average of nearly two weeks off every 

year. In 2006, the average council worker 

took 11.31 days off work sick, compared 

with 9.69 days in 2011. The council has 

11,000 employees, including teachers. 

THE Houghton Weavers have handed 

over a new recording of their famous 

Lion of Vienna song to Bolton 

Wanderers. The group spoke of their 

pride last month when they were 

asked to re-record the song about 

Nat Lofthouse to help raise funds for a 

statue of the Wanderers legend at the 

Reebok Stadium. They went into the 

studio recently and even roped in the 

Eng land Supporters Band to bring a 

fresh sound to the song.

TWO teams from Westhoughton 

Community High School took 

Olympic sport as their theme for 

a Rotary Speaking Competition. 

The Rotary Zone final was held at 

Bedford High School in Leigh for 

teams who had won through from local 

competitions from Wigan in the west 

to Rochdale in the east. 

Westhoughton Intermediate Team 

members spoke about “Illegal drug use 

– what can the Olympics teach us?” 

Speaker Jason Goodacre emphasised 

the shame which would and should 

surround any athlete caught using 

drugs. It was important that the 

Games showed what the athletes could 

do, not what drugs could do. 

The team’s chairperson was Natasha 

Leach and Romana Harrison proposed 

the vote of thanks. The Senior Team’s 

theme was “Steve Redgrave, an inspiration 

to us all”. He is one of only four 

Olympians to havewon a gold medal 

at five consecutive Olympic Games. 

Speaker Charlotte England explained 

how he had achieved this despite having 

to battle through severe illnesses 

during much of his career. 

Chairperson Lucas Arrona and Proposer 

of the Vote of Thanks Sofie 

McPherson-Booth completed the 

Senior Team. 

Westhoughton Rotary’s Vocational 

Chairman, John Myatt, said: 

“Both teams were a credit to their

February fun at comedy club 

FEBRUARY is all about fun at 

Bolton’s TFI Comedy Club. 

The next gig is on Friday, February 

17 at Carnegie Hall in Westhoughton, 

with popular comedian Mike Wilkinson 

returning as MC. 

A talented and varied line-up will follow, 

with Martin Mor, a former circus 

performer from Northern Ireland. 

Next on the bill is Idris Olawale 

Gbaja-Biamila, a British born Nigerian 

who goes by the name of Ola the 

Comedian. A young talent, Ola is a 

likeable performer with an edge.

More neighbourhood 

collections to open 

BOLTON’S second wave of library 

neighbourhood collection points 

will open to the public in the next 

few weeks. 

The neighbourhood collection service 

which replaces Oxford Grove Library 

will be set up in Halliwell UCAN centre 

on Monday, February 27 and Castle 

Hill’s new neighbourhood collection 

point will be situated in Tonge UCAN 

centre from Monday, March 5. 

The existing library buildings for 

those areas will close on Friday, February 

24 and Friday, March 2 

respectively. 

The new-style service will enable people 

to borrow books via a self-service 

machine. There will also be computers 

set up in both centres offering internet 

access. 

The neighbourhood collections will 

be open to the public during UCAN 

opening hours, plus Saturday mornings 

at Halliwell, from 9.30am to 

12.30pm. 

After April 1, Halliwell’s hours will 

increase further to include three evenings 

until 6pm. Any special requests for books 

that aren’t on display can be made as normal 

via the library ordering service.

What the Dickens... 

BOLTON School Girls’ 

Division has been celebrating 

the bicentenary 

of Charles Dickens’ birth. 

When twelve year old Year 

8 pupil Francesca Adams 

heard that pupils were being 

encouraged to dress as characters 

from Dickens’ stories, 

she decided it would be even 

more fun to try and set a new 

Guinness World Record for 

the most people dressed as 

fictional characters. She told 

her Form Teacher, who told 

the Headmistress and suddenly 

the Girls’ Division was 

on a mission - the record to 

beat was 644 people, held by 

Chelmsford County High 

School! 

On the day, the majority of 

pupils from the Senior School 

and Sixth Form dressed up 

as Dickensian characters, as 

did members of staff and 

Year 6 of the Junior Girls’ 

School. The girls gathered in 

their Great Hall for their 

morning assembly where official 

witnesses and stewards 

counted the participants. It 

soon became clear that a new 

record was set and the official 

count was 739 

participants. 

Francesca said: “It was 

very exciting to see everyone 

dressed up. There were some 

fantastic costumes. I got the 

idea from the Guinness World 

Records book that I got at 

Christmas. I am thrilled that 

we have broken the record.” 

Throughout the day, the 

girls celebrated the life of 

Charles Dickens and many 

lessons were themed around 

his work. There were Dickens 

readings in assembly and 

the catering team served up 

gruel at lunch time. 

During the day pupils also 

received a visit from representatives 

from The Guide 

Dogs for the Blind Association, 

who brought with them 

a puppy that has the nickname 

“The Artful Dodger”. 

They came in to congratulate 

the girls on raising enough 

funds to sponsor their second 

guide dog which will be called 

“Dickens”. 


BOLTON’S biggest 

nightclub, Ikon, has closed 

its doors for good. The 

club failed to open 

recently and now owner 

the Luminar Group has 

confirmed the venue is to 

remain shut due to 

struggling trade. Luminar’s 

new owners, who paid £45 

million for the chain, said 

the Bolton club was no 

longer viable.

Thanks to a £165,000 government 

grant, hundreds of

Adakoy Island (really a peninsular) 

across a wide bay from the resort of 

Marmaris in south-west Turkey. 

Sailing, windsurfing and waterskiing 

are readily available and, with a 

slogan of "relax as hard as you like", 

you can do as much or as little as you 

want, as these sports are all included 

in the price of the holiday. 

You don't have to worry very much 

about food, either, as the Club Board 

accommodation package includes daily 

breakfast and lunch, plus four evening 

meals in the week. 

All Neilson's BeachClub Plus 

resorts are designed with much more 

than the basic offering of the past, 

aimed at people keen to hit the water 

and do little else. 

Club Adakoy won't pressurise anybody 

to take part in activities, however. 

You can prostrate yourself in front of 

the Mediterranean sun every day if you

go. It was certainly the first holiday I've 

been on where I have set my alarm for 

7am and not regretted it.

hearty breakfast (and it's always 

hearty wherever I'm dining) are 

mainly about learning. If, like me, 

you're a complete novice, the staff 

take you in hand and patiently take 

you through your chosen activity. 

I decided to tackle windsurfing, 

having never attempted it before. 

There were four 90 minute lessons 

on the course and at the end of two, 

I was deemed competent enough to 

go out on my own. 

By the end of the week, I was cursing 

the fact that the wind would not 

stay blowing in the right direction for 

me. Even at the beginning of June, the 

sparkling clear Med waters were warm 

enough to make a wetsuit unnecessary. 

It was a similar experience for 

those who undertook sailing. The 

resort has its own extensive fleet of 

boats, from tiny dinghies sailed by 

one person, through catamarans 

designed for two and up to lively 

BB3s, which require more. 

After classes, it's time for a welldeserved 

lunch, and then you either go 

out and practise your respective craft 

or try another watersport requiring no 

tuition, such as kayaking (there are 

daily "safaris" around the bay) or standup 

paddleboarding, a gentle device 

which tests your balance and stretches 

your stomach muscles. 

Waterskiing is also very popular. Two 

speedboats take people skiing or wakeboarding 

around the deep blue waters 

of the bay and several people I met 

were on the holiday mainly for that 

purpose. I was forced to retire ruefully 

after a series of graceless face-plants 

into the water, but one of my friends, 

who struggled with windsurfing, was 

a natural from the start. 

The resort also has a couple of tennis 

courts and a full-time tennis coach. 

Whatever your standard, you can turn 

up for a free group session or pay extra 

for a solo lesson. You can also hire out 

courts to play with friends and join in 

the weekly competition. 

The Kids' Club is probably one of the 

main selling points of this holiday for 

young families. Though you might go 

away as a family, you don't want to look 

after your children all day every day, so 

there is extensive childcare on site. 

Or you can opt for what I found to be 

a real highlight of the holiday: taking 

an evening cruise around Marmaris 

Bay in a vessel drawn from the resort's 

fleet of 34-foot pleasure yachts. 

Under the watchful gaze of a skipper, 

you spend several hours cruising 

around the extensive volcanic bay, 

enjoying some wine, maybe taking a 

dive into the cool waters from the deck 

of the boat and hopefully catching the 

beginning of the sunset.

STARTER: Squid with chilli 

INGREDIENTS 

FOR THE DIPPING SAUCE 

• 100g/3 1 ⁄2oz caster sugar 

• 2 tbsp white wine vinegar 

• 1 long red chilli, finely chopped 

• 2 garlic cloves, peeled and finely 

chopped 

• 15g/ 1 ⁄2oz piece fresh root ginger, 

peeled and finely chopped 

• 1 tbsp chopped fresh coriander 

FOR THE SQUID 

• 2 x 175g-200g/6oz-7oz whole 

prepared squid 

• 2 heaped tsp Sichuan peppercorns 

• 2 heaped tsp black peppercorns 

• 1 ⁄2 tsp dried chilli flakes 

• 1 tbsp sea salt flakes 

• 5 tbsp self-raising flour 

• 5 tbsp cornflour 

• Vegetable oil, for shallow frying 

PREPARATION METHOD 

1. For the dipping sauce, put the 

sugar, 50ml/2fl oz water and one 

tablespoon of the vinegar in a small 

saucepan and gently heat until the 

sugar dissolves, stirring constantly. 

Bring to the boil and cook for one 

minute. Add the chilli, garlic and ginger 

and cook for a further minute, 

stirring occasionally. Remove from 

the heat, stir in the remaining vinegar 

and leave to cool. 

2. Cut the squid pieces along one 

side and open out. Score the inside of 

the cone in a criss-cross pattern with 

the tip of a knife, working diagonally 

across the flesh. Cut the tentacles 

into quarters. 

3. Put the peppercorns, chilli flakes 

and salt in a small pan and heat gently 

until you can smell the peppery 

aromas. Tip into a pestle and mortar 

and pound hard until the texture of 

freshly ground black pepper. Transfer 

to a bowl and stir in the self-raising 

flour and cornflour. 

4. Place the squid into the bowl 

and mix together until the squid is 

well coated with the spiced flour. Set 

aside while the oil is heating. Stir 

the coriander into the cooled dipping 

sauce and pour into a small 

bowl set on a large plate or small 

serving platter. 

5. Pour 2cm oil into a saucepan and 

place over a medium heat. Put a cooking 

thermometer in the pan and heat 

the oil to 180C/350F. When the oil 

reaches the right temperature, use 

tongs to drop a few pieces of the 

squid into the pan. You will need to 

cook it in three or four batches. 

6. When all the squid is fried, transfer 

to the platter with the dipping 

sauce and serve immediately.

FOR THE CURRY 

• 2 tbsp groundnut oil 

• 5 shallots, peeled and 

chopped 

• 2 garlic cloves, peeled and 

crushed 

• 5cm/2in piece fresh root 

ginger, peeled and grated 

• 1 tbsp curry powder 

• 1 tbsp chilli powder 

• 1 tsp ground cinnamon 

• 1 tsp ground cumin 

• 1 tsp ground coriander 

• 4 fresh curry leaves 

• 1 star anise 

• 4 cloves 

• 800g/1lb 12oz sirloin steak, 

cut into 2.5cm/1in cubes 

• 400g/14 1 ⁄2oz potatoes, cut into 

2.5cm/1in cubes 

• 2 large red chillies, seeds 

removed, finely chopped 

• 1 ⁄2 tsp salt 

• 400ml/14 1 ⁄2fl oz coconut milk 

• 2 tbsp fresh lime juice 

• 1 tsp soft brown sugar 

• 2 red chillies, sliced, to garnish 

For the basmati rice 

• 200g/7oz basmati rice 

• 300ml/10 1 ⁄2fl oz water 

• pinch salt 


1. For the curry, heat the groundnut 

oil in a large pan and gently fry 

the shallots, garlic and ginger for 4- 

5 minutes, or until softened. 

DESSERT: Traditional apple pie 


FOR THE FILLING 

• 5oz golden caster sugar, plus 1 

tbsp for sprinkling 

• 1 tsp ground cinnamon 

• 2 tbsp cornflour 

• 600g/1lb 5oz Bramley cooking 

apples, peeled, cored, sliced 

FOR THE PASTRY 

• 400g/14oz plain flour, plus 

extra rolling 

• 2 tbsp caster sugar 

• 1 lemon, zest only 

• 250g/10oz cold butter, cut into 

cubes 

• 1 free-range egg, beaten with 2 

tbsp cold water, plus 1 freerange 

egg, beaten, to glaze 


1. For the pastry, place the flour, 

sugar and lemon zest into a bowl 

and rub in the butter until the 

mixture resembles breadcrumbs. 

Add the beaten egg and stir with 

a round-bladed knife until the 

mixture forms a dough. 

2. Set aside one-third of the pastry 

for the lid. 

3. Roll out the remaining pastry 

on a lightly floured surface 

until the thickness of a pound coin 

and 5-7cm/2-3in larger than the 

pie dish. Lift the pastry over the 

rolling pin and lower it gently into 

the pie dish. 

4. Press the pastry firmly into 

the dish and up the sides, making 

sure there are no air bubbles. Chill 

the fridge for a few minutes. 

2. Add the curry powder, chilli 

powder, ground cinnamon, ground 

cumin, ground coriander, curry 

leaves, star anise and cloves and 

fry for a further minute, or until 

the spices start to darken and 

release their aromas. 

3. Add the beef and stir to coat 

in the spice mixture. Add the 

potatoes, finely chopped chillies, 

salt and coconut milk and bring 

to the boil. Cover the pan with 

a lid, reduce the heat and simmer 

for 40 minutes, stirring 

occasionally, until the beef is tender. 

Just before serving, stir in 

the lime juice and brown sugar 

and cook with the lid off for a 

final 2-3 minutes. 

5. Preheat the oven to 

200C/400F/Gas 6. Place a baking 

tray into the oven to preheat. 

6. For the filling, mix the sugar, 

cinnamon and cornflour in a large 

bowl. Stir in the apples. 

7. Place the apple filling into the 

pie dish, making sure that it rises 

above the edge. Brush the rim of 

the dish with beaten egg. 

8. Roll out the reserved ball of 

pastry. Cover the pie with the 

pastry and press the edges 

together firmly to seal. Using a 

sharp knife, trim off the excess

4. Meanwhile, for the basmati 

rice, soak the rice in cold water 

for 30 minutes then drain and 

rinse thoroughly. Add the rice 

to a pan with the 300ml/10_fl oz 

water and a large pinch of salt. 

Bring to the boil, then cover 

with a lid and turn the heat 

down to the lowest setting. Cook 

for 10 minutes, or until the rice 

has absorbed all of the water 

and is tender. Remove from the 

heat and rest for five minutes. 

Fluff the rice up with a fork just 

before serving. 

5. To serve, spoon the rice onto 

serving plates and ladle over the 

beef and potato curry. Garnish 

with the sliced red chillies.

golden-brown all over and the 

apples are tender.

‘I know I need help with my

which of the plans on offer

This is a common concern from 

many people we speak to who are 

struggling to keep up with payments 

to their unsecured 

creditors. One of the most common 

plans on offer is the Debt 

Management Plan. 

What is a Debt Management 

Plan? 

A Debt Management Plan is 

an informal agreement with your 

creditors to make reduced payments 

to them. By informal we 

mean that the courts are not 

involved in setting up the plan 

so it is not a legally binding 

agreement. The plan allows you 

to re-pay your creditors at a rate 

you can afford each month. It is 

a particularly good option for people 

who are having difficulties 

that may be of a temporary 

nature because its informal 

nature gives it more flexibility 

than some other options. 

How does it work? 

Your debt advisor will draw up 

a financial statement for you 

showing your income and household 

expenditure. The difference 

between the two is the amount 

you can afford to pay your creditors 

each month. You then pay this 

amount to the Debt Management 

Company each month and they 

take care of making sure that each 

creditor receives the share due to 

them as well as dealing with all 

correspondence and phone calls 

from your creditors for you. 

What’s the catch? 

It will take you longer to repay 

your debts because you will be 

making lower payments, but most 

people in Debt Management Plans 

find this is acceptable because they 

no longer have to constantly 

stretch their finances to keep up 

with payments. 

Your credit rating will be affected 

because you will not be making 

the payments you originally 

agreed, but if you have already 

missed payments before setting 

up your plan it is likely that this 

will already be the case. Although 

this will affect your ability to 

obtain further credit the last thing 

you should be doing at this point 

is borrowing more money. 

What are the benefits to me? 

A Debt Management Plan is relatively 

inexpensive and quick to 

set up. It is also flexible, so if your 

circumstances change your plan 

can be changed to take account of 

this, e.g. if you find yourself in a 

position to start making full payments 

to your creditors it can be 

cancelled and you can take over 

the running of your finances yourself 

again. Likewise if your 

situation worsens your advisor can 

go back to your creditors and negotiate 

for a further reduction in 

your payments. 

While it is not possible to guarantee 

that creditors will stop 

interest and charges on the 

amounts owed to them, most will 

do so once they see a professionally 

prepared financial statement 

and regular payments being 

made. Finally the worry and stress 

of dealing with the creditors is 

taken away from you and dealt 

with by your debt advisor.

You tend to read about people 

getting online quickie 

divorces. Is there really a 

place for a solicitor generally 

and if so, is specialist 

advice really required or 

would any solicitor do? 

If I had a pound for every time 

I heard about this so called virtual 

Court that exists on the Web, 

I would be well on the way to saving 

up for Richard Branson’s 

Caribbean island! 

The fact that a hearing is generally 

not required to dissolve a 

marriage or civil partnership does 

not mean that expert advice 

should not be sought. People 

should look for members of Resolution 

(formerly the Solicitors 

Family Law Association) as they 

tend to specialise in Family Law. 

Check their website for accredited 

experts (www.resolution. 

org.uk). Whilst a divorce or civil 

partnership is generally only a 

paper exercise, it does not mean 

paperwork is not problematic. 

The Court is very particular as 

to the legal and factual requirements. 

It can be extremely 

difficult to try and correct these 

errors later on, my experience 

being that matters become so 

entangled the proceedings have 

to be started afresh. So called 

online providers, have in my 

experience issued proceedings 

convenient for them. 

I recently again discovered this 

when acting for a Lancashire dentist 

whose online divorce

proceedings had been issued in 

Swindon County Court! £99 for a 

divorce. No mention of the £385 

Court fees then! Besides, it also 

enables you to engage with your 

expert at what is often an important 

time in the separation, namely 

the beginning of it. 

Yes about that. Isn’t it just a 

case of the parties talking 

through matters with a mediator 

who can act for them 

both so no solicitor needs to 

be involved? 

No. A mediator can give legal 

information but not advice. They, 

themselves will advise the parties 

without a solicitor that they 

should have one! Remember, in 

financial matters, this is your one 

chance to secure your financial 

future on exiting the marriage. 

No second chances. Valuations 

need to be properly undertaken 

and in any negotiation a person 

protected from the possibility of 

coercion or undue influence. Most 

particularly, it is important to 

ensure there is a full and proper 

disclosure so proper informed 

decisions can be made. 

It is rarely the case that something 

is discovered further down 

the line that was not disclosed, 

although if that was true, it would 

have the potential to unravel the 

entire settlement. Business and 

shareholding valuations, liquidity 

issues, copper-bottomed assets 

such as bricks and mortar versus 

more variable risk-laden illiquid 

assets? It can be a very complex 

area. 

What is your experience of a 

solicitor’s view of any child 

aspects to a separation? 

Well, any Family Law specialist, 

particularly an accredited 

Resolution expert, will know that 

first consideration in the financial 

aspects of a divorce or civil 

partnership dissolution will be 

the children’s needs. 

In a child dispute, their welfare 

is paramount. Anything else 

would be relevant but secondary 

to their welfare. You have to be 

child-centric. They are not a make 

weight issue, nor should they ever 

be. Besides, what makes this such 

a great and challenging area of 

law is that you deal with people, 

for all their attributes and faults. 

That includes their expectations, 

hopes and fears. All that 

may be good and bad in them. You 

have to give advice that is generally 

welcomed but sometimes not. 

Advice has to be objective and it 

can be very difficult to do so. 

You do tend to get to know your 

client well over the course of a dispute. 

They are not just names on 

your worksheets. Who would 

want it any other way?

IT seems to be an annual event to 

try and get the same message out 

to drivers at this time of the year. 

As this icy blast or ‘Beast from the 

East’, as it has been dubbed, roars 

in and sends temperatures plummeting, 

with figures of -10c on the 

cards, when you are starting your car 

first thing in the morning do not 

leave your car unattended with the 

engine running! 

It is such an obvious message and 

one that is continually repeated, that 

it is amazing just how many drivers 

ignore this simple piece of advice 

only to find that it isn’t only Jack 

Frost out first thing in the morning 

but also the ‘opportunist’ car thieves 

who look out for these unattended

BOLTON United Harriers 

were quick off the 2012 

mark with some fantastic 

results in January. 

At the start of the month, 

Bolton’s Andy Parker (34.07) 

was pleased to finish 4th in 

the Garstang 10K, given that 

it was won by Irish international 

Sean Connolly (30.56). 

Ian Selby (35:38) marked 

his return to fitness with 

another solid performance 

that gave him 2nd in the M40 

category and 9th overall, 

whilst Dunc Rankin (45.55) 

marked his debut at the 10K 

distance with a respectable 

162nd of 445 finishers. 

Elsewhere, Andrew Doyle 

(48.35) tackled the mud to finish 

14th in the M40 category 

in the Lancashire Cross 

Country Championships at 

Witton Park in Blackburn. 

Also early in January, a trio 

of Bolton Harriers won the 

Team prize in the Northern 

Veterans Multi-terrain Championships 

at Smithills 

Country Park. 

Paul Turner (40.58) finished 

strongly in 3rd (also 3rd 

M50!), ahead of Tony Hesketh 

(41.52) of Horwich RMI 

but behind breakaway leader 

Steve Nolan (38.20) of Burden 

Road Runners. 

Ken Fowler (44.01) edged 

ahead of Bolton teammate 

Eric Ranicar (44.57) at the 

start of the second lap, maintaining 

positions to finish 5th 

(1st M55) and 6th (2nd M60) 

respectively. 

A great 1-2 double was then 

scored by Bolton at the 

Ashurst Beacon Fell Race 

OFF THE MARK 

near Skelmersdale on 14th 

January. Marc Tillotson was 

first of the 150 field over the 

line after covering the 5.9 

miles and 950ft ascent in a 

fleeting 36 minutes 53 seconds. 

Teammate Tony 

Valentine (37.36) was unchallenged 

for 2nd as he dropped 

back in the last half mile. 

A week later, Bolton’s Shay 

Walker ran hot in the Essar 

Four Villages Half Marathon 

in Helsby, Cheshire, finishing 

20th of 1621 runners. 

Very windy conditions were 

not conducive to good times, 

but Walker covered the 13.1 

miles in 77 minutes 33 seconds. 

In doing so, he broke his 

PB by over 5 minutes and was 

pleasantly surprised to finish 

5th in his M40 category. 

The end of January saw a 

group of Harriers descend on 

Preston for the Chernobyl 

10k. Ian Selby (35.55) was in 

action yet again and claimed 

another Top 10 position. 

In finishing 8th overall, he 

did enough to hold off Horwich 

RMI Harrier David 

Jackson (36.06) and win the 

M40 age category, one placing 

better than a fortnight previous 

in the Garstang 10K. 

Ben Scott recorded another 

sub-40min time (39.29) to 

take 44th in the 551 field, 

whilst Dean Johnson (41.27 – 

73rd) was disappointed to 

miss out on a PB by 6 seconds. 

Meanwhile, another longterm 

injury absentee, Geoff 

Knowles, marked his return 

to competition with an excellent 

sub-60min (59.15) in his 

M50 category.

BOLTON Old Links Golf Club have 

recently received the coveted national 

Golfmark Award from the English Golf 

Union. The accreditation also comes 

with the Clubmark Award and together 

they represent the Clubs 

commitment to a safe and friendly environment 

for both junior and new 

golfers. 

Club Director, Carole Leece said: “The 

quality of the course at Old Links has 

always been a major factor in attracting 

top class players to the Club, but I’m 

proud to say that I represent a Board of 

Directors who recognize the need to 

support club members of all abilities. 

The application process for Golfmark 

is quite involved, but we realise that it’s 

important to give our youngsters and 

beginners the best start possible in Golf 

and this accreditation will allow us to 

provide free lessons to our growing 

Junior section.

A GROUP of visually 

impaired learners from 

Bolton College received 

an afternoon of Blind 

Cricket coaching, after a 

visit from representatives 

from Lancashire 

County Cricket Club. 

The Club is supporting a 

campaign to raise awareness 

of cricket for the visually 

impaired and blind by encouraging 

more people to 

participate in the sport. The 

visit is part of a regional drive 

to put together an amateur 

league between colleges. 

Of the twelve Bolton College 

learners who took part, 

which included partially 

sighted and blind learners, 

seven have signed up to 

receive ongoing coaching in 

the hope that they can form a 

Bolton College team. 

The group was supported 

by sighted learners, with 

some wearing simulation 

spectacles to experience the 

game as a visually impaired 

player. Sheraz Chohan of 

Lancashire County Cricket 

Club said: “We’re really 

pleased with the positive 

response from the College and 

its learners. 

“We’d ideally like to set up 

an amateur league between 

the colleges, but there is the 

potential for the players to 

progress even further within 

the County and National 

team if they have the skills 

and commitment.”
