At just1lb 13oz, he weighed less thana bag of sugar. Abdullah wasdiagnosed with CerebralPalsy and profound deafnessat the age of one.Sadly Unaisah later diedwhen they were just fouryears old, from the complicationsof her condition.For the past four years,Abdullah has been attendingThe Legacy Rainbow Housefor life enhancing therapy.However as a result of anincrease in demand for thecharity’s specialist expertise,it must raise additionalfunds to ensure it can sustainand develop its servicesto meet future need.Each current visiting familyhas therefore been askedto raise £3,000 to help thecharity’s fundraising teamincrease support in the communitieswhere they arelocated. Blackpool Sands, a wide,open beach flanked by high trees onsteep, wooded cliffs, must look terrificunder a hot sun.This is also a handy spot to join theSouth West Coastal Path, great forwalkers. My son took his time toenthuse about a yomp along Start Bayand beyond a hamlet of whitewashedhomes called Torcross, where the fishand chip shop is firmly endorsed byFlear guests.Nearly as famous is Slapton LeyNational Nature Reserve almost alongside,where the marshes, reed beds andwoodland provide a natural magnet fornumerous species of birds, mammals,butterflies and moths.Beyond there, we were buffeted bycoastal breezes along Slapton Sands,beneath the Stars and Stripes whichmark a massacre here in 1944. WhenGerman E-boats attacked US infantrydivisions rehearsing for the Normandylandings, more than 600 men were lostin the darkness.Some days, it was a bit chilly to walk,so what could be better than a visit toTotnes, beloved among elderly hippiesand anybody else determined to escapemodern Britain?Did Mary Portas pass this way whenshe tried to find a future for Britain’shigh streets? Totnes embraces visitors,its shops stuffed with fine local foods,including delicious breads and cheesesmade locally, and gleaming fresh fruitand veg.There’s mountains of cheap clothingin the market square, bookshops floggingnearly new titles in untidy heapsfor a pound or two, and lectures onfighting globalisation or becoming avegan.For lunch, the granary bread sandwichin The Brioche was so crammedwith crayfish, rocket and parmesanthat my wife and I had to share it.It helps, of course, that Totnes wasprobably designed by John of Gauntrather than Tesco, on a gradient whichgets steeper after you pass beneath thesplendid medieval arch. The higher youclimb, beyond the Norman castle, thewackier the shops and shopkeepersbecome.Luckily the weather cleared just intime for us to tackle the day trip votedone of Britain’s best.It’s the brainwave of DartmouthSteam Railway, which took on the linebetween Kingswear and Paigntonwhen British Rail gave up in the 1960s,and today carries more than 200,000passengers a year.Since the 1990s, this train ride hasbeen teamed, on a family day out ticket,with an open top bus ride betweenPaignton and Totnes and a riverboatjourney on the Dart from Totnes backto Kingswear.All services run to a timetable, so youmake the journey as fast or as slowlyas you like.The boat ride back along the Dart toKingswear in the evening light, pastthe Dimbleby family pub in Dittishamand Agatha Christie’s former homehigh on the hill, and blessed with anhilarious commentary by Johnny Harris,convinced me the glorious SouthHams merits an early return visit.Cruise linescut pricesIN the wake of theCosta Concordiadisaster, leadingcruise lines areslashing prices anddividing somecruises into shortercomponent parts toget prices down toensure ships sailnear to full capacity.Royal Caribbean,one of the big twocruise giants alongwith Carnival (ownerof Costa), hasrevealed thatbookings saw asharp 20% dropafter days ofheadline coverage ofthe distressed vesseloff the coast ofTuscany.RCCL chairmanand chief executiveRichard Fain says:“We are in unchartedterritory andtraditional modelssimply don’t coversituations like this.”Fain thinksconsiderableuncertainties remainabout likely bookinglevels in the third andfourth quarters.It looks as thoughCosta cruises are hithardest of all.

Nowshe is heading the brewery’sexpansion into a refurbishedformer bleach works at DunscarBridge Business Park, offBlackburn Road.The brewery, under thewatchful eye of brewerDoug Baxendale, hasalready successfully produceda range of distinctivecask beers, which are rapidlybuilding a reputation forquality and consistency.The beers are sold in thecompany’s two pubs - theBrewhouse itself and theThomas Egerton in Egerton,both of which are featured inCAMRA’s The Good BeerGuide 2012 – as well as supplyingmore than 70 otherpubs and clubs throughout thenorth and beyond.Now, as managing director,she is using her business experiencegained in London andAustralia where she lived for12 years, to grow the brandand is busy promoting the popularbeers to the retail freetrade.
