When you walk into the
home of Steve and Carla Knorr,
you can’t help but drop your
jaw in awe and look up at the
surrounding four walls.
What you’ll see at the home,
located at W8313 State Road
76 in Shiocton, is head mounts
of deer, elk, moose and bear.
Lots of big bucks hanging on
the wall, but the biggest bucks
aren’t Steve’s.
They belong to his daughter
Deb. Add to that a 245-pound
buck shot on Oct. 6 during
this year’s youth hunt by his
14-year-old daughter, and
you have a hunting trio that
doesn’t have a problem filling
their deer hunting tags.
Steve, Deb and Chelsi all
started hunting at the age of
14, with Chelsi being the newest
hunter of the family.
The interest of deer hunting
isn’t that difficult to instill in
Steve’s daughters.
“Without him, I don’t know if
I would have an interest,” said
Deb, 22, who has three buck
mounts on the wall.
“He’s a good teacher.”
Steve had both daughters
take hunter safety and both
were hunting at 14 years of
age.
“I made them take hunter
safety with guns being in the
house,” said Steve who admitted
he did push them into
hunting a little bit.
Chelsi even has bow hunter safety,
but for now, using a gun is fine with
her. She dropped her first and only big
buck at 87 yards.
“She hit it right in the front,” said
the proud father. “She hit it right in
the chest.”
Another first for Chelsi was tracking
the blood trail, but that buck didn’t go
too far, as she found it 80 yards away.
“One thing that helped me is that
dad has always said, ‘Make the most
of your shot and make it count.’”
Chelsi said.
Steve added, “We’ve never had a
deer get away.
“I taught them how to do it the right
way and that is what’s satisfying to
me.”
He said they do a lot of target practice
and maintenance of the gun is
key.
“If our guns are having problems,
we find out why and we fix it,” Steve
said.
When asked whick of the girls is the
better hunter, Deb laughed and said,
“I guess Chelsi. She has the bigger
buck.”
Deb has shot seven or eight bucks
in her eight years of hunting. Two of
them were 11-point bucks.
Now those two have a little competition
with one another and look forward
to the day when they can hunt
together.
“I would love it,” Deb said of hunting
with her younger sister. “We’ll be going
out together.”
Is mom interested in adding to the
Knorr hunting legacy and adding to
the wall of fame.
“I don’t hunt,” Carla said.
She was born and raised on a dairy
farm.
“It really wasn’t a tradition for us,”
said Carla.
Steve, an avid hunter, has hunted
out west and up in Canada.
“I usually go somewhere every year,”
he said. “You name it, I probably
hunted it.”
But it’s not his big mounts that
makes him the proudest. It’s watching
his girls grow up into very good
hunters.
“Getting to hunt with my daughters
is what’s the greatest accomplishment
out of all of this,” Steve said.
He puts a lot of work into the hunting
land in Shawano that is 25 miles
away.
In the spring he is there about three
to four weeks working on the foodplots.
With the deer hunting season set
to open on Saturday, Nov. 17, he has
been up to the land quite a bit putting
in his scouting work.
He’s also proud of the fact that
their is respect for not only his hunting
land, but the surrounding ones as
well.
“We have good neighbors,” Steve
said. “Trespassing isn’t so bad like it
was 20 years ago.
“We respect one another’s property.”
Opening weekend is less than two
weeks away and Steve and his daughters
will be up at the shack.
“It’s opening weekend,” said Deb.
“It’s kind of a tradition.”
And they hope they can keep with
that tradition by bringing home some
more big bucks.
If that’s the case, the Knorr family
is going to have to add another wall to
their house.

tion. Since the program
began in 2000, hunters
have donated over
80,000 deer which were
processed into over
3.6 million pounds of
ground venison. The voluntary
venison processing
donation code added
to the ALIS system in
2002 has netted more
than $134,000 from
over 41,000 hunters.
Wisconsin has a network
of venison donation
efforts including:
Hunt for the Hungry,
which operates in the
Green Bay area; Target
Hunger, which handles
donations from the
Chronic Wasting Disease
Management Zone
and the Wisconsin Deer
Donation Program,
which covers all remaining
areas of the state.
USDA - Wildlife Services
staff also help administer
the programs in 49
counties.
Hunters, you can
help feed needy people
throughout Wisconsin
this fall by taking 5 simple
steps:
1. Donate any legally
harvested deer taken
outside the Chronic
Wasting Disease Zone
by dropping it off at a
participating processor
by Friday, February 1,
2013. Deer taken outside
the CWD Zone are
registered with a silver
metal tag. Only silver
tagged deer may be donated
to this program.
2. Field dress the deer
and register it at a Wisconsin
DNR registration
station prior to donating
the deer.
3. Call First! Contact
one of the participating
processors before dropping
the deer off to verify
the processor has space
4. Donate the entire
deer to receive the processing
for free. (Head
Hunter harvest is the largest
cause of death in bucks. Biologists
refer to the portion of bucks killed
by legal hunters each year as the
buck recovery rate (BRR). The buck
recovery rate is a key component of
accurate deer population
estimates. In
2006, a panel of experts
in big game
population modeling
recommended
that we document
BRR through a longterm
mark-recapture
study, thus making this study a
top priority. As the name suggests,
this means capturing and tagging
bucks, monitoring their activity,
and determining the causes of
buck mortality, or death.
In the past, BRR has been estimated
for each deer management
unit based on local expertise and
modeling, rather than direct measurements
from the field. Estimates
of BRR across the Midwest
have ranged between 53-90%.
One of the important assumptions
of the Sex-Age-Kill (SAK)
population formula is that the aged
sample of registered bucks is representative of
the age structure in the population. For example,
if 50% of registered bucks were yearlings
(1-year old), the assumption would be that half
of the adult bucks in the entire population
within that deer management unit are yearlings.
However, hunter selection
for larger and older bucks, and
increased yearling buck vulnerability
to harvest may introduce
error to this statistic. The results
from this study will provide a better
estimate for BRR over a variety
of deer habitats.
As you join thousands
of hunters heading
into the woods, fields
and marshes during the
fall hunting seasons,
Wisconsin DNR safety
experts remind you to
review and think about
firearm safety each and
every time you head out.
Essential to any responsible
hunting trip is
an ironclad adherence
to the four basic rules of
firearm safety that can
be easily remembered
using the TAB-K formula.
= Treat every
firearm as if it is loaded.
Never assume a firearm
is unloaded and never
treat it that way, even
if you watch as it is unloaded.
Make it a habit
to treat guns like they
are loaded all the time.
= Always point
the muzzle in a safe direction.
About one third
of all hunting incidents
are self inflicted injuries.
That means the
muzzle was pointed at
some part of the hunter’s
body. A safe direction
is a direction where
the bullet will travel
and harm no one in the
event of an unwanted
discharge. There are no
accidental discharges
with firearms, only unwanted
discharges.

= Be certain of
your target and what’s
beyond it. Positive target
identification is a must.
To shoot at something
you only think is a legal
target is gambling. In
the case of human injury,
that means gambling
with human life. You
must be absolutely certain
and correct in judgment
before deciding to
shoot. Otherwise, it’s
reckless behavior. In addition
to identifying the
target, a hunter must
know that a safe backstop
for their bullet is
present in every shooting
situation. We don’t
always hit our target,
and, in some cases, the
bullet passes through
the target. A safe backstop
guarantees that no
one will get hurt.
= Keep your
finger outside the trigger
guard until ready to
shoot. If a hunter stumbles
with a firearm in
one hand and nothing in
the other, whatever that
person does with their
free hand will automatically
happen with the
hand holding the gun.
If a finger is inside the
trigger guard, that hand
is likely going to close
around the pistol grip of
the gun and on the trigger
causing an unwanted
discharge.
Planning your fall
hunting trip also means
having your gear in
proper working order.
Firearms should be
cleaned and closely inspected
for any signs of
mechanical wear that
could result in a problem
in the field
Firearms aren’t the
only items that need
to be checked well in
advance of a hunting
trip. Clothing and other
equipment should also
be inspected for signs
of wear and tear. Anything
that might cause
you to compromise safety
should be repaired,
discarded or replaced.
Blaze orange clothing
that has faded over time,
a jacket that doesn’t
fit right or a scope that
isn’t adjusted correctly
can compromise your
safety and the safety of
others.
