Legal challenge blocks
American Airlines merger
US Department of Justice claims tie-up would be bad for consumers...
The planned merger between
American Airlines and US
Airways has been challenged
by the US Department of Justice
(DOJ).
The government unit, along with
six US states and the District of
Columbia, has fi led a lawsuit aimed
at preventing the deal, saying the
merger would lead to "higher fares,
higher fees and... less service" for
the American consumer.
Texas-based American and
Arizona-based US Airways are
planning to form the world's biggest
airline group, operating more than
6,700 daily fl ights and carrying an
estimated 190 million passengers
per year. But this, according to
the DOJ, would be unfair on the
customer, leaving the US with just
three main carriers, following the
recent mergers of Delta and United
with Northwest and Continental
respectively.
"If this merger were to go
forward, consumers will lose the
benefi t of head-to-head competition
between US Airways and American
on thousands of airline routes
across the country – in cities big and
small," the DOJ said. "They will pay
more for less service because the
remaining three legacy carriers –
United, Delta and the new American
– will have very little incentive to
compete on price."
American and US Airways said
they "intend to mount a vigorous
and strong defence" to the lawsuit.
"We believe that the DOJ
is wrong in its assessment of
our merger. Integrating the
complementary networks of
American and US Airways to benefi t
passengers is the motivation for
US businessman unveils supersonic
'Hyperloop'
businessman in the US has
A unveiled plans for a new
method of supersonic transport,
the Hyperloop. The brainchild
of Elon Musk, CEO of Tesla
Motors and Space Exploration
Technologies, the Hyperloop would
transport passengers at speeds
of up to 1,300kph inside a pair of
tubes. Reported by Bloomberg
Businessweek, the tubes would
appear like a "double-barrelled
shotgun", mounted on columns and
running side-by-side for most of
the journey before looping at either
end. Passengers would be carried
in pods within the tubes. Designed
to connect cities less than 1,000
miles (1,609km) apart, Musk said
the Hyperloop would be suitable for
routes such as Los Angeles-San
Francisco and New York-Boston.
bringing these airlines together.
Blocking this pro-competitive
merger will deny customers
access to a broader airline network
that gives them more choices,"
American said in a statement.
But following this legal challenge,
it is now unlikely that the merger will
close in the third quarter of 2013, as
initially planned. Click here for full
Bangkok hotel supply
continues to grow
CBRE reports double-digit growth in Thai capital's inventory...
The number of hotels in
central Bangkok continued
to increase rapidly in the fi rst
half of the year.
According to the latest survey
by property consultant CBRE
Thailand, hotel supply in the Thai
capital expanded 12.1% year-onyear,
following the completion of six
new hotels in the fi rst six months
of 2013. That means there are
now 37,500 hotel rooms in central
Bangkok.
In addition, approximately 2,250
new rooms are expected to come
online in the second half of 2013,
spread across a range of market
segments, including luxury (13%),
upscale (8%), midscale (46%) and
economy (33%).
CBRE noted that "almost all"
of the new hotels are in high-rise
buildings, with the Sukhumvit area
being most popular, accounting
for 65% of the total hotel supply
and four out of six of the new hotel
openings. The Silom/Sathorn area
accounted for 21% of the total hotel
stock while the riverside area has
14% of supply.
PIA launches
Kashgar flights
Pakistan International Airlines
(PIA) has launched flights to the
ancient Chinese city of Kashgar. The
national carrier landed in the city, in
far western China, yesterday, and
will now operate the service once
a week direct from the Pakistani
capital Islamabad, using an Airbus
A310 aircraft. Kashgar, in the region
of Xinjiang, becomes PIA's second
destination in China following Beijing.
The Northern Mariana
Islands consists of 15
main islands, yet 90%
of the population lives
on just one island -
Saipan
And according to James Pitchon,
Executive Director of CBRE
Research & Consulting Thailand,
the increase in supply in Bangkok
was likely to be offset by a sharp
rise in demand.
“The big challenge for hotel
owners is to raise the room rates
which have not grown significantly
for the last five years,” Pitchton
said. “[But] the second half of
2013 may finally see the growth
in visitor arrivals outpacing new
supply allowing owners to raise
rates.”
A further 4,400 additional rooms
expected to be added to central
Bangkok’s inventory the end of
2015, bringing the city's total to
almost 42,000 rooms - an 11.9%
increase on current fi gures. Click
Tourism Australia launches
Chinese website
GREEN
Tourism Australia has launched a
new Chinese consumer website,
Australia.cn. The new site is the
first dedicated overseas portal to
be offered by Tourism Australia and
comes amid a sharp rise in Chinese
arrivals to Australia. And the tourism
board's Managing Director, Andrew
McEvoy, said the launch of the site
marked a significant strategic step
in the country's Chinese marketing
strategy.
"This is the first time Tourism
Australia has developed and hosted
a consumer website in any overseas
market and it is an essential step
in Australia staying ahead of the
competition in China, a market
estimated to be worth over AU$9
billion (US$8.3bn) to Australian
tourism by 2020," McEvoy said.
"Research has shown that Chinese
travellers are interested in an
Australian holiday for its food and
wine, city lifestyle, natural wonders
and beautiful coastal areas - and
we have tailored the content on the
website to inspire Chinese consumers
to help turn their holiday aspirations
into reality."
As well as highlighting these
market segments, the new site
is integrated with Chinese social
media platforms such as Sina
Weibo and Kaixin, and includes a
section where Chinese celebrities
and bloggers share their own views
of Australia. There is also a travel
planning area with fl ight and visa
information.
China is Australia's fastest growing
inbound tourism market, with 685,000
Chinese visiting Australia in the year
ending June 2013, an increase of
17.4% on the previous year. Click
Ayana Bali's new hotel plants trees
Rimba Jimbaran, the new resort
in Bali, has planted 50,000 trees.
The luxury resort, which is the
Ayana Resort & Spa's sister
property, is already located in a
forest setting. But it has added
to this natural backdrop by
planting thousands more trees in
its 77 hectares of grounds.
"Five years ago, when the 'seeds were planted' for the idea of a new
hotel at Ayana, our farmers planted 40,000 fast-growing albesia 'silk'
trees at Ayana's farm in central Bali," said Rimba's Project Director,
Wayan Widhiada. "Now, some of those trees have been used at
Rimba, and we have replanted at the farm to replace them, as part
of our commitment to a greener Bali. In addition, we have planted
10,000 trees around Rimba's grounds to help further offset our
carbon footprint."
Aside from albesia trees, which will grow to full maturity within fi ve
years, the resort's farm also produces pineapples and oranges and
coffee beans, which are offered on the resort menus.
