SUMMER 2013
NEW WINDOW WALLS
With his final drawings, architect Brian Faucheux,‘72, of Sizeler Thompson Brown Architects shows Archbishop
Rummel and Archdiocese of New Orleans leaders his company’s designs for a new exterior for the entire school
campus. Accompanied by associate architect and alumnus Mark Brupbacher, ’90, Faucheux is addressing the
school’s immediate concern of 50 year old, leaky window walls throughout the campus. The $2.7 million dollar
project should begin construction in early 2014.
MISSION STATEMENT
Message from the President
As president of Archbishop Rummel High School, I have had the privilege
and honor of sharing and strengthening the three hundred thirty three
year old heritage of Saint John Baptist de La Salle, founder of the Christian
Brothers. The patron saint of teachers, St. La Salle, taught that the gospel
provides the basis of a school’s organization and relational structure.
Archbishop Rummel’s rich spiritual and academic tradition centers the school
as its setting, the teacher as its focus and the salvific potential of education as
its inspiration. Together and by association, our lay faculty provides a human
and Christian education to the young men confided to our care.
This year has shown a greater emphasis on mission-oriented curriculum,
instruction, and activities. Our mission is at the heart of the school, requiring
each person to use his or her unique gifts and talents to bring the Lasallian
culture to fulfillment and to impact the school in profound ways. Lasallian
formation has been emphasized through daily prayer, service projects,
retreats, and Five Core dinners. Students are recognized for academics,
service, and extracurricular accomplishments at monthly President’s
Assemblies. Incidentally, Raider athletics garnered three state titles this
school year: our first ever in football and inline hockey, and our second
consecutive title in bowling.
Starting next school year, two four-year programs - biomedical science
and pre-law studies – will be offered to ninth grade students. The rigorous
curriculum is designed to prepare students for careers in “bright outlook”
occupations. Students will read critically, work collaboratively, think
creatively, solve complex problems, and manage information using digital
technology and other communication tools. Throughout the programs
students will work closely with professionals in prospective career areas.
Archbishop Rummel High School is also partnering with Southeastern
Louisiana University to offer dual enrollment courses next school year. This
program will allow Raiders to earn college credit in certain math, English
and social studies courses while still enrolled in high school. The cost of
the program is minimal, especially considering the cost of taking the same
courses as college students.
Raider Pride is alive and well at 1901 Severn Avenue! I am excited about
the school’s future and all that the school has to offer its students. Archbishop
Rummel High School continues to follow the Lasallian maxim: “Enter to
learn, leave to serve.”
Brother Gale Condit, FSC
President
Archbishop Rummel High School educates each
student according to the principles of the Catholic
Church in the Lasallian tradition of faith, community,
and service. In a caring, disciplined environment of
social awareness, Archbishop Rummel High School
challenges each student to recognize the dignity of life
and to develop and share, to the best of his ability, his
unique talents.
BIOMEDICAL, LAW COURSES OFFERED TO STUDENTS
The approaching fall semester
will witness 75 students at
Archbishop Rummel taking courses
in a new Law Studies program
and working in a new Biomedical
Sciences curriculum. The school
is working with New Orleans
area business, medical, and legal
professionals who will serve as
advisors for student projects, speak
at the school, and also develop field
experiences that tie directly into the
classroom learning.
Students will take the Law Studies
or Biomedical Sciences courses in
addition to the standard courses
required for state graduation and
TOPS scholarship requirements.
The four courses for the Law
Studies program will consist
of Speech and Debate in the
student’s freshman
year; Principles of
Free Enterprise as a
sophomore; Civil and
Criminal Law for the
third year as juniors;
and Forensic Sciences
in their fourth year as
seniors.
Through the Law
Studies program,
students will also learn
how to formulate
persuasive debates,
produce oral and
written arguments, establish and
manage enterprises, and explore the
workings of the justice system.
The four courses for the
Biomedical Sciences program
will consist of Principles of the
Talking court room procedures to Cameron Dupuy, Josh Bienvenu, Alex Bienvenu, Justin Lorio,
and Tyler Braud is Tulane Law school professor Jim Letten.
Dr. Frank Smart, chief cardiologist at LSUHSC, explains a
procedure to freshmen (left) Ryan Powers, Mark Pittman, Luke
Biomedical Sciences; Human Body
Systems; Biomedical Innovation;
and Medical Interventions. Students
will explore concepts of human
medicine and are introduced to
topics such as physiology, genetics,
microbiology and public health.
“Through activities, like
dissecting a heart, students examine
the processes, structures and
interactions of the human body –
often playing the role of biomedical
professionals. They also explore the
prevention, diagnosis and treatment
of disease, working collaboratively
to investigate and design innovative
solutions to various health
challenges,” said Dr. Sarah Ross,
Special awards were presented and Fr. Pat Wattigny, chaplain for the past 13 years, was awarded an honorary
school diploma by Brother Gale Condit, FSC, president; and Mr. Michael Scalco, principal. Valedictorian David
Bienvenu then spoke to the graduates and guests about his journey through high school. Diplomas were awarded
to the graduates, they were commissioned by the principal, and finally congratulated by the president. The
graduates of the Class of 2013 departed the Pontchartrain Center after singing the alma mater and fight song. The
official program ended with the traditional toss of the caps on the Lake Pontchartrain levee.
FISHING RODEO AND FAMILY FEST
T
he official weigh-in for the annual Alumni Association’s Fishing Rodeo was moved to
campus this June and a huge crowd of fishermen and spectators filled the school campus.
They were greeted by good food, inflatables for the kids, and great entertainment. All afternoon,
fishermen brought their day’s catch to the weigh station before winners were announced.
Many drawings of gifts were done all day but one of the most enjoyable was the awarding
of 25 Raider fishing poles to kids in attendance. At the conclusion of Family Fest, freshman
Dylan Pelicano was named the King Fisherman of 2013.
ATHLETIC HALL OF FAME
RAIDER PRIDE DAY
Following a morning prayer service, all
Archbishop Rummel students, faculty,
and staff boarded buses to begin their Raider
Pride Service Day duties. Some headed to
do service projects at schools, some drove
to retirement homes, and some journeyed
to parks and playgrounds for their work.
When their tasks were completed, all felt a
sense of accomplishment following a great
day for the Raider community.
LEGACY LUNCH
A
huge number of alumni dads turned up for lunch in
October, as they participated in the annual Legacy
Lunch for alums and their Raider sons. After checking in at
registration, the alums waited for their sons before partaking
in the lasagna pasta lunch. During the course of the meal,
they were thanked by Brother Gale Condit, FSC, president;
Mr. Michael Scalco, principal; and Mr. Donald Stout, alumni
director, who organized the lunch. At the conclusion of the
lunch, the dads and sons stayed in the Raider Room and
mingled with other sons and dads in attendance. Once again,
it was a great day to be a Raider.
BEAST FEAST
Another huge crowd showed up in April for the
annual Beast Feast sponsored by the school’s
Alumni Association. Held at Green Acres Country
Club, the well-attended event included such
delicacies as nutria tacos, boudoin balls, and alligator
and apple sausage. The alums, their family and
friends, and many faculty members enjoyed the great
food and the camaraderie among the Raider Family.
The evening concluded with the traditional 50-50
drawing that was won by alum Jerry Vadell, ’82.
Another Archbishop Rummel tradition was revived
when Student Council brought back Rummel Day
to its former glory. Beginning with a prayer service
with Fr. Kurt Young, ’05, Rummel Day included student
and alumni speakers who spoke about the past, present,
and future of their alma mater.
To make a great day even better, the Student Councilsponsored
Rummel Day joined forces with the Alumni
Association and had alumni awards presented during
the Friday morning gathering. Alum board president
Immediately afterwards, Mr. Donald Stout, ’83, awarded
the Raider Legacy award to the family of Mr. Pete
Fenner. Mr. Fenner’s son, David, ’84, spoke on behalf
of his late father. Following the morning Rummel Day
Celebrity Waiters Dinner
What a night!
The annual Celebrity Waiters Lunch was transformed into
the Celebrity Waiters Dinner at the Hilton New Orleans
Airport Hotel in mid-April. With a sold-out group of 36
tables and 360+ guests, the dinner was a total success. The venue sparkled, thanks to Mr. and
Mrs. Randy Gervais and Royal Productions. A long list of silent and verbal items were available
as well as a parade of prizes, 50/50 chances, and a 10-restaurant package.
The highlight of the night came when auctioneer Chuck Mutz officiated at a bidding war for
football state championship merchandise between Dominick Impastato, ’97, and Lionel Smith,
’87. Mutz managed to get two sets of the merchandise so both alums purchased their items with
identical $13,000 bids each. Again this year, the evening’s top waiter was First NBC’s Ashton
Ryan. A spirited Doug Mouton, WWL-TV sports director, was emcee for the evening. The 2013
Celebrity Waiters Dinner was chaired by faculty member and parent Ms. Charlene Wetzel.
Next year’s Celebrity Waiters Dinner is scheduled for Saturday, March 22, 2014 at the Airport
GOLF
Friday, May 17 was a great day to play in the annual
Raider Alumni Golf Tournament. Held at Chateau
Estates Golf Club, the tournament had a large number
of Archbishop Rummel alumni golfers beginning
the day with a great lunch before they headed to the
Chateau golf course. They played the course, faced
challenges, and enjoyed refreshments throughout the
course. At course’s end, the golfers went inside the
Country Club for meal number
two as winners were named,
prizes raffled, and friendships
were rekindled. Once again,
it was a great time to be an
Archbishop Rummel alumnus.
ALUMNI PRIESTS
The number of alumni answering God’s call to
priesthood continues to grow as several Archbishop
Rummel graduates are entering the seminary or have
recently been ordained to serve the Church. On June 1,
Travis Clark, ‘01, now Fr. Travis Clark, was ordained a
priest by Archbishop Gregory Aymond at an ordination
ceremony at St. Louis Cathedral. Two weeks earlier,
alumni Charles Dussouy, ‘02, and Tim Hedrick, ‘00,
were ordained transitional deacons by Archbishop
Aymond. And one year ago, alums Kyle Sanders, ‘03,
and Kurt Young, ‘05, were ordained as priests at the
Cathedral. Starting with the new school year, Fr. Kurt
Young will be the first
alum sent back to serve
as school chaplain. Other
Archbishop Rummel
alumni currently in
seminary formation
Deacons Tim Hedrick, ’00, and
Charles Dussouy, ‘02
are Chris Gros, ‘01, and Alex Albert, ‘06. They will
be joined by two other alumni who are entering the
seminary this fall to prepare for the priesthood: Kyle
George, ‘08, and Andrew Gutierrez, ‘11.
SPORTS AWARDS
As the end-of-year school awards ceremonies continued
through May, athletes gathered in the Raider gym for
the annual Spring Athletic Awards Ceremony. Six different
teams were recognized by their head coaches and athletes
received recognition, awards, and much applause. At the
end of the ceremony, the top awards were named by Mr. Phil
Greco, athletic director. He named senior David Bienvenu
(left) as winner of the Carl Avrard award, senior Damian
Williams as recipient of the Rufus award, and Matthew
Brennan as winner of the Father Wayne Roca award.
CHAMPIONSHIP TEAMS
The just completed school year was a great one for Raider athletics. At the end of the school year, the school
hockey team won the state championship by defeating the Gulf Coast boys’ hockey team in Lafayette, 5-4.
Coach Travis Olivier, ‘02, and his hockey team received congratulations from the school.
Earlier in the school year Coach Matt Caire, ’03, and his Raider bowling team repeated as state champions. Also
in Lafayette, the defending state champs won via an 18-9 victory over Morgan City. As with the hockey team, the
Raider bowlers received congratulations from the Raider family.
In the beginning of the school year, the Raider football team enjoyed a perfect pre-playoff record and entered the
state playoffs as the number one team in state. With victories throughout the playoffs, the Raiders faced Barbe of
Lake Charles for the 5A state championship. Before a massive Raider crowd in the Mercedes-Benz Superdome, ’81
alum Jay Roth’s Raiders stymied the Barbe Buccaneers, 35-14, and won the school’s first state football championship.
ENHANCED
ACADEMIC
SCHOLARSHIPS
School leadership at Archbishop Rummel High School announced last school year a new, enhanced
academic scholarship program for new eighth and ninth graders. Brother Gale Condit, FSC, president,
said the program will attract the brightest and finest elementary school students in the area to Archbishop
Rummel. Admissions Director Casey Cadella said for the 2013-14 school year, 19 eighth and ninth graders
have earned the very lucrative academic scholarships and he is anticipating an even larger number of
academic scholarships in the future as more and more families learn of the academic grants.
LIVING WAY OF CROSS
long-standing Archbishop Rummel tradition
A that took a short hiatus has returned to
the school campus in all its glory. On Holy
Thursday, the student body was treated to an
outstanding program produced by Archbishop
Rummel and Archbishop Chapelle students,
faculty, and alumni. The living Way of the Cross
was portrayed by students for each station with
song and prayer, and a totally silent student body
took in the solemnity of the program. At the
conclusion, Fr. Pat Wattigny, chaplain, offered
a benediction service as he exposed the Blessed
Sacrament to the Raider audience.
’66 LUNCHES
The Archbishop Rummel charter class of 1966
gathers most months for lunch at Chad’s
Bistro on West Esplanade. Organized by this year’s
Alumnus of the Year Pete Oddo, the luncheon has
continued to grow in numbers, with two “new”
attendees every month. School president Brother
Gale Condit, FSC and principal Michael Scalco
STRAIGHT A, 4.0 LUNCHES
At the conclusion of each academic quarter,
school leadership honors those students who
have excelled academically on their quarter report
cards. Those with 4.0 GPAs or better are treated
to a catered lunch in the Raider Room, while
those students earning straight A’s on their report
cards have an off campus lunch. During the
recent school year, they dined at Henry Shane’s
DEANIE’S RESTAURANT BASEBALL
Members of the Chifici family continue to sponsor the
Raider baseball team’s action in American Legion. Playing
under the name “Deanie’s Seafood Restaurant, the Legion team
and athletic department are working closely with the Chifici
family as the official sponsor. Four members of the Chifici
family are graduates of Archbishop
Rummel and they are Mark Chifici,
’82; Eric Chifici, ’85; Keith Chifici, ’89;
and Garrett Chifici, ’90. All Raider
fans are advised to support the school’s
American Legion “Deanie’s Seafood”
team.
PIE BOWL
The action on the field is just part of the
excitement at a Raider Pie Bowl game.
From parents, students, and fans in the
bleachers, to excitement on the sidelines, many
activities make up Raider football. At game’s
end, the winners give pies to the losing coaches,
and taking full advantage of the victory was
Coach Vance Andry, ’96, (left) who took care of
business with Coach Nick Monica.
