Dear Friends,
Welcome to the 2011-2012 Fall Sports Season! As we celebrate Saint Viator High School’s 50th anniversary, it is great to see the long tradition of
our athletic program continue to flourish. As an alumnus of Saint Viator, I am proud to be on the sidelines cheering for our students and seeing the
pride they carry as part of the Lion Legacy.
This season, our teams look to build on the successes they celebrated last year. In 2010, the boys’ soccer team won the ESCC conference
championship, as well as the Regional championship. The girls’ cross country team won the conference championship for the first time in 17 years,
and the boys’ golf team recaptured their conference title making this their sixth championship in seven years.
This year, I invite you to become a part of the Saint Viator Athletic Program. We have established a winning tradition and our student-athletes appreciate not only your
financial commitments but also your loyalty and dedication to their teams and programs. We all know that a winning program depends not only on the athletes and
coaches, but also on the support of the boosters, parents and alumni.
As this fall season gets underway, I ask you to continue to support the Lions both with your presence and with your financial help – join the Athletic Booster Club, buy Million
Dollar Classic Raffle Tickets, attend events and meets, or just stand up and cheer! As a school committed to excellence – in the classroom, on the court, and amongst our
students – our future is bright and our hopes are high as we begin another season of Lion Athletics.

We enter the new season filled with great excitement. Our student-athletes and coaches have spent a great deal of time preparing to represent
the Lions in a positive way. Their commitment and dedication are why Saint Viator has enjoyed success throughout its proud history. Saint Viator
holds a strong belief in promoting sportsmanship at all our athletic events. We ask that when attending one of our contests you work with us to
promote a positive environment for all participants.
There are many ways to get involved in the Lions athletic program. Consider becoming a part of the tradition that is Saint Viator athletics. Come
cheer on the Lions at our many events, volunteer in the concession stand, or become a member of our Athletic Booster Club; there truly is
something for everyone. Our program can only continue to grow through the generous help of our fans and supporters.
Our theme for this year is the acronym ROAR, which stands for Responsibility, Opportunity, Accountability, and Respect. These four characteristics lay the foundation for a
positive athletic experience. We encourage our athletes and coaches to pursue victory with honor and to live out the mission of Saint Viator in their athletic endeavors.
I wish all of our student-athletes and coaches much success this year. You give us many reasons to be proud to be a Lion. Special thanks go out to the members of the
athletic department staff who work hard to make the Saint Viator athletic program what it is today.

SAINT VIATOR HIGH SCHOOL COLORS, MASCOT & SEAL
Colors: Navy Blue and White Mascot: Lion
The lion figure derived from the French city of Lyon, the home of St. Viator and Fr.
Louis Querbes, the founder of the Viatorians. The school incorporated
the red lion and the white fleur-de-lis from the coat of
arms of the city of Lyon, the crown of thorns surrounding the letters
IHS that is the seal of the Clerics of St. Viator, and three
orbitals symbolizing scientific learning. The torch behind the
shield is a symbol of knowledge, truth, and the Catholic faith.

I Love Cross Country
I’m a big fan. I love cross country. There are very few sports, or other activities for that matter, that are as democratic and interactive
as a cross country meet.
I love the fact that everyone competes. As a participant, you are not relegated to a second stringer or specialists role with limited
action. Everyone runs the same distance, at the same time. How cool is that.
Cross country is a dynamic event that requires stamina, mental toughness and physical strength, Because cross-country runners
have to trek through unpredictable terrain, often in wet and muddy weather, the sport can lead to unexpected injuries. But, every sport
has some risk.
I love that each cross country course is different. Runners compete at the same distance, but each course has its own unique
challenge - uneven terrain, killer hill, or sharp turn.
I love the fact that as a spectator you must run back and forth to gain different viewing points during the race. And if you didn’t scout
out the course, you may be stuck with seeing runners only at the start and the finish line.
I love the sight of runners in brightly-colored uniforms darting in and out of trees resplendent in their autumn hue. When the leaves
are changing and the air is brisk, where would you rather be on a sunny Saturday morning?
A few minutes before the start of each race, I love the anticipation of the runners as they stand nervously on line in pre-assigned
boxes, The starter, starting pistol in hand, and they’re off.
Cross-country running requires a different stride length, a different leg action and a different foot plant from track running. These
things cannot be picked up instantly, they only become instinctive when the runner adopts a specific cross-country style. I love the
runner that seems to perform effortlessly, and takes the win.
As the cross country season winds down, look back at your accomplishments with pride, and look forward to even better things.
Whether you qualify for state or not, be proud of the effort you made. It takes dedication to participate in cross- country.
And parents, I understand your commitment, joy and pain. I’ve been there. I’ve run cross country myself... and I’ve been a parent of
a runner as well. I’ve done the same things many of you have, such as leaving work 2-3 hours early to drive more than an hour to a meet.
I was there when my daughter put in her worst performance - and she needed a shoulder to cry on (she had forgotten her inhaler). I was
there when she won the City Meet, set a record, and needed a shoulder to lean on (to hold her up following an amazing effort). I
understand, and I salute your involvement.
Congratulations to runners and parents alike. You are all winners. You know... the sport of cross-country isn’t for everybody, but
perhaps it should be.
