Notes from the Above Ground
We entered the halls of Saint Viator a few short years ago as naive freshmen on a hot August day in 2008. As a class we quickly learned to never lean against the
bathroom counters, that the room numbering does not make sense, and how to wear a sweatshirt the entire day without getting caught. We were nowhere near
the top of the school, but we were finally part of the Viator family.
In 2010 we entered an equally hot and still not air-conditioned school as sophomores. As sophomores we were first under the impression we now ruled the
school because we were no longer freshmen. We soon learned that was in no way true. Classes were a little easier and we spent the entire year dreading the
notoriously impossible junior year.
We entered again as juniors and found the rumors were true. Junior year was impossible. But we managed to survive the ACT, harder classes, more homework,
college search, and AP tests all in one week. We mistakenly thought we could wait to start the college process and thought we had entered heaven when it was
finally all over.
This fall we walked throught the hallways as seniors. Now when we thought we were at the top of the school we were actually right. Most of us waited to start
college applications until September and immediately regretted it. But January 1 finally came to free us of the pressure, only to be replaced by the wait for acceptance
letters. As much older and wiser seniors we have now learned much of what Viator has to offer. We now know how to stretch every school rule, have
learned the many Nevillisms, and have, we hope, come out as much wiser and better people.
As for us, we don’t pretend to have knowledge beyond our years or psychic powers. A whole year in Mrs. Cairo’s class, however, means we are able to make an
educated guess: moving on will be hard. Making a new start—whether you’re the only Viator student at your college or not—will take some time. But as we look
to our future, we can only encourage everyone not to forsake the past. Keep in touch with old friends while still making new ones. Remember your good high
school years with the bad. Never regret anything you do, because if it was good it’s a memory, and if it was bad it’s an experience. Thank you for all our memories
and experiences over the years.
Closing Ceremonies
Your class is filled with leaders,
pride and tons of school
spirit. I have so many memories...
Alex Catanescu and
Brandon Dayton’s charm and
hugs. When John Minier
wanted me to cut his ring off
which would have included
his finger too. Sam Masini’s
quiet humor and Jack Kellner’s
wit. Billy Cavanagh
offering his “vomit” flavored
Jelly Belly to me—thanks Cavanagh
I love you too! Quality
detention time with the Dean
for Howard, Peart and Corrigan
to name just a few! Thank
you for making me wonder if
you would ever figure it out,
laugh, cry and share in your
journey into good young men
and women.
Here are my “wills” to you:
• To always remember who
you are and where you come
from.
• To live your faith by who
you are and what you do.
• To live your life with passion
and persistence.
• My morning “hellos” on a
tough day.
• The Viator spirit in your
heart always—you are always
one of my Lions.
Closing Ceremonies
Congratulations, Daniel!
Bass-pro-temp. Always enjoy
laughter, good friendships,
relationships throughout
life. All our love, Mom, Dad,
and Elizabeth
Congratulations Jeremy! We
are so proud of you. Good
luck at Indiana University.
Love, Dad, Mom, and Kacie
To all of our graduating
seniors: I wish you love,
joy and success. I have
found that love and joy
seem to combine when
I think of others rather
than myself. Success
seems to come from
hard work and persistence...and
not being
too proud to ask for
help when needed. Finally
try not to worry.
As a good friend likes
to say, "Worry is the
price you pay for trouble
before it happens."
You will continue to
be in my thoughts and
prayers. Please let me
know if I can be of help
in the future.
Fondly,
Mrs. Duggan
Closing Ceremonies
Congratulations, Class of 2012, on
the completion of four years that made
you think, made you care, and made
you better. Particular thanks to last
year’s 7th and 8th period APLACs,
whose fantastic brand of insanity has
changed room 223 forever, and to the
many students with whom I had the
privilege of sharing Quest XXIII and
XXV and Kairos LVIII. (Who-charist?)
You’ve heard a lot about where
you’ll go in the next four years. But just
as important is where you stay. Stay
good. Stay in touch. Stay true to the
values you learned here. Stay who you
are—especially when it’s not trendy.
And above all, stay awake to the many
marvelous ways God is with you every
day of your life.
Regardless of what emotion you
happen to be feeling today, I hope
you’ll find some wisdom in these words
from a poem by (who else?) G.K. Chesterton,
about a particularly talented
and ambitious child: (HINT: Nous is
a philosophical term for intelligence,
and a pinafore is a child’s vest.)
The babe upraised his wondering eyes,
And timidly he said,
“A trend towards experiment
In modern minds is bred.
“I feel the will to roam, to learn
By test, experience, nous,
That fire is hot and ocean deep,
And wolves carnivorous.
“My brain demands complexity,”
The lisping cherub cried.
I looked at him, and only said,
“Go on. The world is wide.”
A tear rolled down his pinafore.
“Yet from my life must pass
The simple love of sun and moon,
The old games in the grass;
“Now that my back is to my home
Could these again be found?”
I looked on him and only said,
“Go on. The world is round.”
God bless you, seniors! I’ll see you
when you all turn up on the Viator
faculty!
Go with God,
It is trite to say that it has
been a pleasure knowing
you and having you in
class but it turns out this is
a true statement. I am going
to miss you guys terribly
and hope that you keep
in touch. You have been
dedicated and worked
diligently in class and
we’ve also had some good
laughs. Strive to be happy
and live your life with
character and integrity. To
AP, I would say, beware of
dead skunks in the middle
of the road.
