Introduction3CHARIOTS OF FIRE THE TURIN HORSETHE ANGELS’ SHARE JAWS“You’re going to need a bigger cinema...”... wrote an excited Filmhouse Twitter follower on hearing we’re screening the restoration of Jaws. It’s mostly showing in our biggest screen so hopefullywe won’t, but that’s the kind of excitement we’re looking for. Our eagerness to show the film got us thinking: why are we so keen to show the originalsummer blockbuster when we tend not to show summer blockbusters? This cinema (had it existed) wouldn’t have shown Jaws back in 1975 so why wouldit now? We’ve recently shown both Alien and Aliens so why aren’t we showing Ridley Scott’s prequel Prometheus on release? Did it take us 37/33 years towork out that Jaws/Alien were great films? And will we be screening American Pie: Reunion in 2046 when we’ve realised what a masterpiece it is?I guess the answer to the original question is manifold: some films are timeless and come to mean more to certain audiences over time, and it falls to us tokeep great older cinema on cinema screens; contemporary blockbusters, good or bad, need little help from us to find their audience and there are plentyother great films out there that deserve our support; and, lastly, the truth is that we can and regularly do have very healthy audiences for cult/retro one-offscreenings, but, chances are people wouldn’t come here and see Prometheus in numbers likely to make a two week booking worth our while, howevergood it may be.Speaking of summer blockbusters, they’re out in full force this year, but what that tends to mean is there’s a dearth of, shall we say, more cerebral fare asfilm distributors are not keen on releasing ‘smaller’ films, the kind we might show on release, against them. That’s not to say there aren’t some great filmsheading your way. In fact, there are dozens! Too many to mention them all here, but here’s a few highlights...As Donald Trump is about to open his Trump International Golf Links (in July) it seemed like a good time to revisit Anthony Baxter’s excellent documentaryYou’ve Been Trumped; Hungarian maestro Béla Tarr bows out (he has stated this is his last film) in magnificent style with The Turin Horse; Ken Loach’swhisky-infused, bittersweet, comedy caper The Angels’ Share hits our screens on 1 June; Marina Abramovic: The Artist is Present documents a year inthe life of the performance artist as she prepares for her career retrospective at MoMA. I confess to not exactly being a big fan of performance art (thoughI did see an Abramovic exhibition in Italy once as the person I was with was) but I found this film totally fascinating.Screening Woody Allen: A Documentary gave us just the excuse we needed to show what may just be the best eight films he has ever made... (discuss)...and we’re awash with awesome restorations too: William Wyler’s The Collector (1965), Chariots of Fire (1981), Bertrand Tavernier’s Glasgow-set futuristicDeath Watch (1980)....Here’s to a summer of bad weather and hiding out in cinemas, and don’t forget, EIFF tickets go on sale on Thursday, 31 May at 10 am, or noon on the 30thif you’re a Filmhouse member... It’s not too late to join! Speaking of EIFF, we’re doing a proper programming partnership with them this year on their GregoryLa Cava Retrospective. They’ll show six in June, then we’ll show six in July, all introduced by EIFF Artistic Director Chris Fujiwara. Now that’s teamwork.Rod White, Head of Filmhouse

20Come and See.../KinoKlubTHE FRENCH CONNECTION THE BIG LEBOWSKI GAGARINLANDCome and See...A monthly one-off screening of a great filmwe simply thought you might like to see, again or for the first time, on the big screen. The French ConnectionTue 19 Jun at 5.30pmWilliam Friedkin • USA 1971 • 1h44m • Digital projectionEnglish and French with English subtitles • 18Cast: Gene Hackman, Fernando Rey, Roy Scheider, Tony Lo Bianco,Marcel Bozzuffi.William Friedkin’s hugely influential thriller from 1971 is afictionalised account of New York City’s largest drug bust. But at the same time it is about blurring the line betweengood guys and bad guys (now default in your typical crimemovie), and the gritty, yet often boring pursuit of narcoticscrime. Gene Hackman is the relentlessly obsessiveJimmy ‘Popeye’ Doyle, as certain of his hunches as he isunmindful of the line that separates cop from criminal. He bears down on international drug smuggler Charnier(Fernando Rey), resulting in one of cinema’s most dizzyingchase sequences. The French Connection is unusual in that it is selfconsciouslynot a melodrama: there is no romantic subplot,no family life, no heroic actors or actions. It is spare, cold, and generally unpleasant. It is also masterful. The Big LebowskiWed 25 Jul at 8.30pmJoel Coen • USA/UK 1998 • 1h57m • Digital projection18 – Contains occasional violence, frequent strong language andcoarse sexual referencesCast: Jeff Bridges, John Goodman, Julianne Moore, Steve Buscemi,David Huddleston, Philip Seymour Hoffman, John Turturro.Following the success of Fargo, the Coen brothers createdtheir most gratifying character to date. If ever there was aphilosophy to be gleaned from the brothers’ canon, thenJeff ‘The Dude’ Lebowski might well be the embodimentof it.A case of mistaken identity leads a couple of thugs to theDude’s Venice Beach home where they relieve themselveson his prized carpet. Seeking compensation from theirintended victim, the Dude’s namesake and antithesis,he becomes entangled in a complex kidnapping dramainvolving sinister German nihilists, the art world and theporn industry.Apart from psychedelic dream sequences with a bowlingtwist, it’s the wealth of great characters and their insane(and endlessly quotable) dialogue that make this somemorable. John Goodman’s Walter Sobchak, Vietnamvet and the Dude’s bowling buddy, is in part responsiblefor the mayhem, but he also gives colour to the Dude’severyday life, as does a mawkish Steve Buscemi and JohnTurturro’s absurd Latino pederast, Jesus Quintana. Allen’s character is seamlessly blendedwith archival footage from the 1930s: he appears waitingin the on-deck circle as Babe Ruth is batting, among acrowd of Nazis cheering Hitler, and growing a beard tobecome a Hassidic rabbi. His case captures the imaginationof America, as well as the attentions of a psychiatrist (MiaFarrow) who falls in love with him.Broadway Danny RoseThu 26 to Sat 28 JulWoody Allen • USA 1984 • 1h24m • 35mm • PGCast: Woody Allen, Mia Farrow, Nick Apollo Forte, Sandy Baron,Corbett Monica.A delightful comedy that sees Allen as a no-hope theatricalagent (his clients include balloon twisters, wine-glassplayers and bird trainers, who all leave him when the BigTime beckons) who gets involved with a brassy Mafiawidow (Farrow, unrecognisable). The jokes are firmlyembedded in plot and characterisation, and the film, shotby Gordon Willis in harsh black-and-white, looks terrific;but what makes it work so well is the unsentimentalwarmth pervading every frame.Hannah and Her SistersSun 29 to Tue 31 JulWoody Allen • USA 1986 • 1h47m • New 35mm print • 15Cast: Woody Allen, Mia Farrow, Barbara Hershey, Michael Caine,Dianne Wiest, Max von Sydow.Essentially three separate tales that intertwine at times,Hannah and Her Sisters is one of Allen’s most complexfilms. Hannah (Mia Farrow) is married to Elliot (MichaelCaine), a business manager for rock stars, but used tobe married to Mickey (Woody Allen), a TV producer.Hannah’s sisters are Lee (Barbara Hershey) – who’s livingwith Frederick (Max von Sydow), a bitter and domineeringartist – and Holly (Dianne Wiest), an actress who’s abundle of nerves and jealous of Hannah’s supposedlyperfect life. The plot could easily have been a soap opera, but Allen infused it with wit, a superb cast and his usual“the best direction is the least direction” style, so that thecamera never calls attention to itself.Crimes and MisdemeanorsWed 1 & Thu 2 AugWoody Allen • USA 1989 • 1h44m • 35mm • 15Cast: Martin Landau, Woody Allen, Alan Alda, Anjelica Huston,Sam Waterston. In the first of two loosely interwoven stories, rich, philanthropic ophthalmologist Judah Rosenthal (MartinLandau), afraid his lover will reveal all to his wife, decidesto dispose of the former with the help of a hit-man. Judah and Clifford meet only in the finalscene: what links them throughout is guilt, stemming froman obsessive interest in matters of faith and ethics.
