Introduction3IN THE CITY OF SYLVIA BROCCOLI, CUBBY BROCCOLI – DIAMONDS ARE FOREVERENCOUNTERS AT THE END OF THE WORLD THE 400 BLOWSThat’s Quite Interesting...I was putting together this programme and I suddenly thought to myself: what does the title of The 400 Blows (screening this month in abrand new restoration for its 50th anniversary) actually mean? I’ve never known but have never let that spoil my enjoyment of Truffaut’smagical film. Same goes for Reservoir Dogs, A Clockwork Orange, Inland Empire et al, I s’pose... Anyway, in my quest for knowledge, Idecided to avoid risking a Ronnie Hazlehurst moment (Google it!), side-step that oft-censured web community resource Wikipedia, and do my research elsewhere. What I came up with is that The 400 Blows is a direct translation of part of the French expression ‘FaireLes Quatre Cents Coups’, which translates into the English expression, ‘To Raise Hell’. So the title doesn’t, in itself, mean a whole lot ofanything, but you can sort of see where they were going with it. Wikipedia actually corroborates what I found elsewhere, which isperhaps worrying, but it also says it was briefly to be called Wild Oats in the States – not an entirely appropriate connotation for a film aboutan early teen I wouldn’t have thought... if it’s true!April kicks off with US comedian Bill Maher’s hugely entertaining, controversial and occasionally frightening documentary take on thecurrent state of world religion, Religulous – bear in mind the film is very much from the point of view of an atheist comedian!; from Chile,Tony Manero is the dark tale of a man who will stop at nothing, including eliminating the opposition, in his quest to win a Tony Manero(John Travolta’s character in Saturday Night Fever) impersonator competition; Encounters at the End of the World is Werner Herzog’sbeautiful and very idiosyncratic (well, it is Herzog!) take on the Antarctic and those who live and work there; In the City of Sylvia sees ayoung man in Strasbourg longing (very cinematically) for a girl he once knew; recently-widowed Colin Firth moves his young family tothe city of the title following the accidental death of his wife, in Genova; and Joseph H Lewis’ cracking 1950 noir, Gun Crazy, gets the fullrestoration/new print treatment. Our annual Italian Film Festival arrives in its 16th edition, as does the ¡Viva! Spanish and Latin American Film Festival on Tour in its 15th,as, indeed, does our New Europe Film Festival in its 3rd. And for all you Bond nuts out there, we have, to mark the centenary of the late, great, legendary producer Albert R ‘Cubby’ Broccoli, the first 7 ‘Bonds’, restored to their original, wonderful, big-screen glory. But why ‘Cubby’? Well, according to Wikipedia...Rod White, Head of ProgrammingSee a short video of Rod talking about this month’s programme highlights on our website – www.filmhousecinema.com

4New releasesRELIGULOUSIN THE CITY OF SYLVIATONY MANERONEWRELEASEReligulousFri 3 to Thu 16 AprLarry Charles • USA 2008 • 1h41m • 35mm • English, Hebrew,Arabic, Persian and Spanish with English subtitles • 15 – Containsstrong language, sex references, drug use and sexualised nudityDocumentaryAs wars rage, the state of the environment becomes moredesperate, and natural disasters more frequent, the endof the world would appear to be nigh. “If there’s onething I hate more than prophecy,” declares comedian andcommentator Bill Maher at the start of this documentary,“it’s self-fulfilling prophecy.” Maher has a beef with religionand questions for all the faiths, and he’s not prepared tolet anyone off the hook, whether they worship God, Jesus,Allah, Buddha or marijuana. It is clear Maher has done histheological homework, and he approaches his interviewswith believers armed with incredible knowledge as well asdeep skepticism.A collaboration between Maher and director Larry Charles(the co-creator of Seinfeld and Curb Your Enthusiasm anddirector of the Borat film), Religulous could be billed as thefunniest, most irreverent and provocative documentaryyou will see in this lifetime, if its pertinence didn’t give youthe chills. At a time when members of the senate insistthat the Bible is literally the word of Our Lord and passlaws informed by that belief, or when there are plenty ofapologists for those advocating the murder of people whomake films or draw cartoons, you have to thank God, orwhoever, that Charles and Maher are around to confrontsuch madness.NEWRELEASEIn the City of SylviaEn la ciudad de SylviaFri 3 to Thu 9 AprJosé Luis Guerín • Spain 2007 • 1h25m • Digital projectionFrench and Spanish with English subtitlesPG – Contains mild sexualised nudityCast: Xavier Lafitte, Pilar López de Ayala, Tanja Czichy, GladysDeussner, Philippe Ohrel.A handsome young man (Xavier Lafitte) has returned tothe city of Strasbourg in search of Sylvia, a woman he metthere six years ago. In his hotel room, he sits on his bed lostin reverie about her. He walks down the street and stops inthe café where he first encountered her. He begins a seriesof sketches in his notebook, of women talking with friends, whispering secrets, laughing. The next day, he returns tothe same café and begins sketching again. Then he spots awoman who looks familiar, and follows her...With this intriguing, virtually dialogue-free daydream of afilm, writer and director José Luis Guerín has captured theobsessive and mysterious compulsiveness of yearning andthe ways in which it can take over our consciousness. Thevery essence of cinema – sound, images, movement – thefilm perfectly captures the harmony between the observerand the environment, and invites a total immersion inits atmosphere. Nothing less than a timely and timelessmasterpiece, and compelling evidence that cinema is farfrom dying – in truth, it has hardly ever been as excitingand alive.NEWRELEASETony ManeroFri 10 to Thu 16 AprPablo Larrain • Chile/Brazil 2008 • 1h37m • 35mm • Spanish withEnglish subtitles • 18 – Contains infrequent explicit and strong sexCast: Alfredo Castro, Hector Marales, Paolo Lattus, AmparoNoguera, Elsa Poblete.Santiago, Chile, 1978: with the country in the grip ofPinochet’s oppressive dictatorship, Raúl Peralta (AlfredoCastro), a man in his 50s, indulges in the fantasy that heis disco king Tony Manero, John Travolta’s white-suited,fleet-footed ladies’ man in Saturday Night Fever. Inspiredby repeated viewing of the film at his local fleapit, he formsand choreographs a low-rent dance troupe, performingat a rundown bar on the outskirts of the city. His fantasy isalready becoming a sinister fixation, as he seems incapable ofkeeping nefarious activities in check, when national televisionannounces a Tony Manero impersonating competition. Raúlcannot be distracted from the prize he feels pre-destinedto win, even when the murderous secret police start to payinterest in the inhabitants of the bar and his fellow dancers.Tony Manero is at once an absurd black comedy; anunsettling thriller with surprising twists; a confrontation ofdark days in Chile’s recent history; and a horribly believable, realist portrait of obsession. Castro’s brilliant, suitably denselead performance as the misanthropic, misguided anti-heroand the inspired handheld filming ensure that director PabloLarraín, with only his second feature, has created a multitextured, striking work of some distinction.Lead actor Alfredo Castro will be present for a Q&A sessionfollowing the 6.15pm screening on Monday 13 April.

His professionalcareer is a history of contemporary Italian politics, and theallegations repeatedly levelled against him, of corruptionand Mafia involvement, reflect much of the darkestelements of Italy through the 1960s, 1970s and 1980s. Tocall Il Divo a biopic would be a gross injustice. It is, indeed,a depiction of the life and times of Andreotti, but seenthrough a cinematic prism that is so intense that this is amillion miles away from being stodgy history.Paolo Sorrentino builds on the immense promise shownin his previous films, The Consequences of Love andThe Family Friend, and here demonstrates the full forceof his abilities. Aided immeasurably by a magnificentperformance from the great Toni Servillo (also star of TheConsequences of Love). Sorrentino creates a dazzling, visceral experience that somehow brilliantly weavestogether all the complicated political conspiracies andskullduggery into one thrilling drama.MAYBEYOUMISSED...Slumdog MillionaireFri 3 to Sun 5 AprDanny Boyle • UK/USA 2008 • 2h • 35mm • English and Hindiwith English subtitles • 15 – Contains strong language and violenceCast: Dev Patel, Anil Kapoor, Saurabh Shukla, Rajendranath Zutshi.Jamal Malik, an 18 year-old orphan from the slums ofMumbai, is just one question away from winning 20 millionrupees on India’s Who Wants To Be A Millionaire? Back home after a spell in the army, theadult Bart (John Dall) falls for carnival sharpshooter Laurie(Peggy Cummins) and joins the show. But the lovers soonfind themselves out of work and drift into a life of crime, for which Laurie shows a feral aptitude. She eventuallycommits murder during a heist, and the law – includingBart’s boyhood friend, Clyde (Harry Lewis), now a sheriff– begins to close inexorably in.“We go together like guns and ammunition,” says Bartto Laurie: this film was among the first in the US to makeexplicit the symbiotic connection between sex andviolence, as well as the worship of guns and their role inAmerican culture. It revels in Bart and Laurie’s perversepsychology and the nihilistic aspects of their escapades, and director Joseph H Lewis, one of the great unsungstylists of the American cinema, made the most of hisleads, playing off Dall’s air of ambiguous sexuality andmental instability (as did Alfred Hitchcock in Rope) andCummins’ unbridled carnality.CLASSICRE-RELEASEThe Times of Harvey MilkMon 6 to Wed 8 AprRob Epstein • USA 1984 • 1h28m • DigiBeta • 15DocumentaryFollowing the success of Gus Van Sant’s award-winningbiopic Milk comes a welcome re-release of Rob Epstein’s1984 Oscar-winning documentary, about the first openlygay man to be elected to a prominent political positionin California. Epstein focuses on Milk’s brief politicalcareer and structures the film as a contrast between theoutspoken flamboyant crusader for human rights andfreedom and his quiet assassin Dan White, described as aconservative All-American working class guy.CLASSICRE-RELEASEThe 400 BlowsLes Quatre cents coupsFri 10 to Thu 23 AprFrançois Truffaut • France 1959 • 1h40m • Digital projectionFrench with English subtitles • PG – Contains mild language, violence, sex references and smoking scenesCast: Jean-Pierre Léaud, Claire Maurier, Albert Rémy, GuyDecomble, Georges Flamant.Fifty years on from its unveiling at the Cannes Film Festival,Truffaut’s superb feature debut remains an influentiallandmark in the history of the cinema.Deeply moving yet devoid of maudlin sentimentality, thefilm centres on Antoine Doinel (Jean-Pierre Léaud), a13-year-old constantly in trouble – justifiably or otherwise– with his parents and teachers. Drifting into truancy andpetty theft, he soon finds himself at odds with still lesssympathetic figures of adult authority…Shot on the streets of Paris, the film exudes an authenticity– emotional, psychological, sociological – surely bornof the semi-autobiographical story, and displays realcompassion as it charts a seemingly inexorable progresstowards delinquency. Great credit goes to Léaud, whoseengaging but entirely uningratiating performance is amiracle of naturalism, but Truffaut was also wise in availinghimself of many talents, on both sides of the camera, whowould prove crucial to the development of the nouvellevague.
