“A Visit to the Pediatric
Intensive Care Unit”
Meet
Makayla
With her beaming smile, beautiful
blue eyes and happy temperament,
one would never guess that little Makayla Kuehn of
Juneau, Wisconsin, has needed her share of advanced
care at American Family Children’s Hospital.
Born three months early, measuring 13.5 inches and
weighing not quite two pounds, Makayla was soon
diagnosed with a grade 4 intraventricular hemorrhage
(IVH), meaning that the blood vessels in her ventricles
(fluid-containing spaces in the brain) were leaking.
These ventricles were obstructed as a result of her
premature birth.
Makayla also developed hydrocephalus, a condition in
which too much of the cerebral spinal fluid accumulates
in the brain. The fluid can only drain properly with
surgical insertion of a shunt, a procedure performed by
UW Health pediatric neurosurgeons.
“Makayla requires a shunt, but they don’t always work
perfectly,” says her father, Adam Kuehn. “When they
need repair, she comes here and her care is always
top-notch.”
Adam, his wife, Stacey, and Makayla’s twin sister,
Madyson, all appreciate the little touches from everyone
the family encounters at the children’s hospital.
“They’re always asking, ‘Can we get you something?’ or
‘What can we do?’ and that goes a long way when you
just want to focus on your child.”
Makayla is also featured on the cover.
Dear Friends,
Since opening American Family Children’s Hospital (AFCH) in 2007, we have cared for more than
10,000 inpatients from Wisconsin and beyond. In this year’s report, we feature some of these children
whose incredible stories help unite us in our commitment to make AFCH the best that it can be. These
are children who were recently treated in our Pediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU), where patients in the
most vulnerable situations are cared for by our expert medical staff.
As we are experiencing increased need for our specialized pediatric services at AFCH, demand for our
PICU continues to grow each day as well. Thankfully, we have never turned a child away, but future
predictions show that our inpatient volume will rise by 50 percent by 2015. With this in mind, the time
has come to increase our capacity to serve.
We are already addressing our capacity issue by raising money to complete the shelled spaces,
including adding 26 new critical-care beds to the 6th floor and building a pediatric cardiac
catheterization lab. Our Advisory Board co-chairs, John Flad and Jack Salzwedel, address this project
in their message on page 9.
It is important for families to know that there will always be room for their children at AFCH. And due
in large part to your continued benevolence, we are adding the infrastructure, technology and services
necessary to care for those who need it most. On behalf of our staff and the patients and families we
serve, thank you for your ongoing support.
Sincerely,
A visit to the
Pediatric
Intensive
CareUnit
Nothing captures the heart and soul of
a children’s hospital like its Pediatric
Intensive Care Unit or PICU. Each of the
children featured in this report – Makayla,
Austin, Camryn, Kennedy and Brayden –
were patients at American Family
Children’s Hospital’s PICU in early 2011.
Scott Hagen, MD
While life can literally hang in the balance for any
hospitalized child, patients admitted to the PICU –
including several you will read about here – receive
the highest level of medical attention because of their
vulnerable conditions.
“The Pediatric Intensive Care Unit is where we care
for the very sickest children in the hospital,” says
PICU Medical Director Scott Hagen, MD. “These are
kids who may have sustained a traumatic injury, are
experiencing a serious infection or just coming out of
major surgery. These patients typically require a higher
level of attention from staff or more sophisticated
equipment such as a ventilator. Fortunately,” Dr. Hagen
adds, “most of the children we see have a very good
recovery and go on to lead normal lives.”
Dr. Hagen says a well-functioning PICU must be both
nimble and collaborative. “The status of our patients
can change by the minute or even by the second,” he
says. “Our staff has the training, expertise and teambased
approach to respond quickly to any change in a
child’s condition.”
Visit uwhealth.org/mcbsociety to view a multimedia
slideshow featuring Makayla, Austin, Camryn,
Kennedy and Brayden along with Dr. Scott Hagen
discussing pediatric intensive care.
Austin
Meet
“Austin’s such a great kid,” says Pediatric Transplant
Coordinator Beth Spaith, RN, “and he knows it, too!
Everyone in the Intensive Care Unit knows him by name.”
Not so many years ago, 8-year-old Austin Wells from
Michigan’s Upper Peninsula was perilously close to the end
of his life.
Diagnosed before birth with a rare condition known as
gastroschisis – his intestines were actually out of his body
through a defect on his umbilical cord – Austin spent
most of his first 20 months at American Family Children’s
Hospital. In 2004, after suffering from very serious liver
disease, Austin underwent a multi-organ transplant,
receiving a new liver, intestine and pancreas.
“Austin faces his share of complications,” says his father
Matthew. “Yet despite everything he has been through,
I have never heard him complain once. He is a happy,
outgoing boy who takes on every day with a smile. He is
also an amazing big brother to our 2-year-old son, Tanner.
My wife Crystal and I take everything one day at a time and
do whatever we can to make Austin’s life as normal
as possible.”
Meet
Camryn
Sitting in a large recliner in her room
at American Family Children’s Hospital,
12-year-old Camryn Porter of Reedsburg, Wisconsin,
looks up at her parents, Jen Engebretson and Alex Porter.
Camryn’s voice is soft, but the words capture a harsh truth.
“I was this close to going up to heaven,” she says, holding
her thumb and forefinger a half-inch apart.
Indeed, she was. Just days after Christmas 2010, a
perfectly healthy Camryn suddenly became acutely ill with
no apparent cause. Her abdomen began swelling with
fluid as she went into a coma-like state for several weeks,
unable to breathe, speak or eat on her own.
After weeks of undergoing nearly every medical test
imaginable, Camryn was finally diagnosed with a rare
streptococcal infection in her abdomen that triggered
septic shock syndrome – resulting in a near total
shutdown of her body’s vital organs.
“Camryn’s body underwent countless chemical reactions,
causing infection-fighting cells to also attack her kidneys,
lungs and digestive system,” says UW Health Pediatric
Critical Care Nurse Practitioner Lynne Sears, RN, MS.
“About six weeks in the hospital went by before her fever
subsided and we knew she would come around.”
Scott Hagen, MD, Medical Director of the Pediatric
Intensive Care Unit, says Camryn’s recovery illustrates
the team-based approach at American Family Children’s
Hospital.
“Throughout her 10 weeks in the hospital, Camryn was
cared for by pediatric specialists from cardiology, general
surgery, pulmonology, endocrinology, infectious disease,
critical care and health psychology,” Dr. Hagen says. “It
took many great minds working together to get this girl
back to health.”
Meet
Kennedy
Kennedy Brown was two months old when her UW Health
pediatrician, Richard Ellis, MD, noticed an abnormality
in her head shape. Her parents, Matt and Vanessa of
Fitchburg, Wisconsin, were told that their daughter’s skull
was expanding in length, but not in width.
A condition known as sagittal craniosynostosis was
ultimately diagnosed, meaning that bones within
Kennedy’s skull had fused together instead of stretching
and producing new bone to accommodate normal brain
growth. To remedy the situation, Kennedy’s skull was
surgically repaired in January 2011 by UW Health Pediatric
Plastic Surgeon Delora Mount, MD and UW Health
Pediatric Neurosurgeon Bermans Iskandar, MD.
“Dr. Iskandar and I treated
Kennedy by creating an ear-to-ear incision,” says
Dr. Mount, “and then removing the prematurely fused
bones in her skull, creating room for her head to grow in
width as well as length. Within just a few weeks, her head
began assuming a more normal shape. She did just great
and her family was wonderful.”
Having a child undergo neurosurgery is never easy, but
the Browns say American Family Children’s Hospital
caregivers did everything possible to alleviate the stress.
“During surgery, the nurses came out every hour to assure
us that things were going just fine with Kennedy,” says
Matt. “That very day, we got to hold her after surgery
and it really just made the whole experience so very
comfortable for us and for her.”
Vanessa agrees, noting that staff frequently assisted in
many ways, including keeping friends and family aware of
Kennedy’s developments.
Just one month after surgery, Kennedy’s head became
noticeably more normal in shape. Aside from a few routine
follow-up visits this year, Kennedy should be on her way to
a completely healthy life.
“She’s doing just awesome,” Vanessa says. “We’re very
happy.”
Meet
Brayden
UW Health pediatrician
Carleen Hanson, MD, has performed many routine
check-ups on newborns throughout her practice at the
UW Health East Clinic in Madison. In January 2011,
however, she witnessed something highly unusual when
two-week old Brayden Greiber of Sun Prairie, Wisconsin,
came in for a visit.
“At the end of Brayden’s check-up,” says Dr. Hanson, “I
was talking with his mom, Marisa, when Brayden suddenly
turned pale. He got very quiet and was breathing shallowly.
I listened to his heart, and his heart rate was low – a sign
that his blood oxygen level also was low. We started
oxygen, which helped him perk up and immediately sent
him by ambulance to American Family Children’s Hospital.”
Four hours later, while being admitted to his hospital room,
an even more frightening episode occurred. Brayden
stopped breathing and his skin began to turn blue.
“Things started moving very fast,” remembers Marisa.
“They immediately inserted a breathing tube to get him
oxygen. After what happened that morning at his check-up,
we could not believe how close he came to his last breath.”
After a few days in the hospital and very close monitoring
by critical care physicians, nurses and staff, Brayden was
doing well enough to come home. Marisa, her husband
Ryan and their two-year-old son, Austen, could not believe
their good fortune.
“We are so grateful Brayden was in the right place at the
right time,” says Marisa. “Had he stopped breathing in the
car, he would have died. For him to be at the hospital when
this happened, we know there was an angel watching over
him somewhere.”
Since January, Brayden has been doing just fine. Everyone
is literally breathing easier.
A History of Giving
American Family Children’s Hospital traces its roots to the story of Mary Cornelia
Bradley, a little girl born to Dr. Harold Cornelius Bradley, a UW biochemistry
professor and his wife Mary Josephine (Crane) Bradley of the renowned Chicago
industrialist Crane family.
Stricken with measles at age 6, Mary died in 1916 from meningitis shortly before
her seventh birthday.
Deeply heartbroken by the loss of their firstborn child, the Bradleys’ loving
tribute to Mary would become a pediatric research and teaching hospital built in
connection with the UW Medical School.
This hospital—funded primarily by the Bradleys’ efforts—opened in 1920 as the
Mary Cornelia Bradley Hospital for the Study of Children’s Diseases.
After several moves and expansions over the next nine decades, the Bradleys’
legacy would emerge in 2007 as the world-class American Family Children’s Hospital.
Mary Cornelia Bradley and her
grandfather Cornelius Beach
Bradley, circa 1915.
To ensure that children and families from Wisconsin and beyond continue to receive the very best medical
care, we have established the mary cornelia bradley society. its purpose is simple: to recognize philanthropy
committed to continued excellence at American Family Children’s Hospital.
the mary cornelia bradley society recognizes four levels of philanthropic commitment: Legacy (estate gifts);
Legends (one-time or cumulative gifts of $25,000 or more); Guardians (one-time or cumulative gifts of $10,000
through $24,999); and Ambassadors (gifts of $1,000 or more within a single calendar year).
John Flad (right in photo), President of Flad Development.
dear friends:
There really is something incredibly special about the way that American
Family Children’s Hospital just tugs at your heart. Maybe it is because we
wish the words “children” and “hospital” never had to be said together or
perhaps we personally know a child, grandchild or family friend who has needed
this world-class, yet warm and friendly pediatric medical facility.
Thanks to your generous support over the years, American Family Children’s Hospital is caring
for patients not only from throughout Wisconsin, but across the Midwest and beyond. In light of this growing demand, we have
already begun raising money to finish those spaces in the hospital earmarked for future expansion. Priority one is to complete the
now vacant 6th floor by adding: (1) a 12-bed, Level 4, high-acuity neonatal intensive care unit (nicu) serving babies requiring
complex surgery and medical intervention; and (2) a 14-bed Pediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU) to complement our existing
21-bed picu. our goal is to open both units by January 2013.
Your kindness and generosity makes a tremendous difference every single day. on behalf of the entire advisory board, thank you
for all you do for hospitalized kids.
Farewell,
Dr. Lund!
In 2011, American Family Children’s
Hospital Surgeon-in-Chief, Dennis
Lund, MD, accepted a new position as
Executive Vice President for Phoenix
Children’s Medical Group and Surgeonin-Chief
of Phoenix Children’s Hospital.
Dr. Lund, who also chaired the Division of
General Surgery within the UW School of
Medicine and Public Health Department
of Surgery, came to Madison in 1999
from Children’s Hospital Boston.
Throughout his 12 years in Madison,
Dr. Lund was an exemplary surgeon,
mentor, teacher and friend. Our worldclass
American Family Children’s Hospital
facility that opened in 2007 would not
have been possible without Dr. Lund’s
leadership and passionate support.
Thank you, Dr. Lund, for 12 years of
outstanding leadership and service as
Surgeon-in-Chief of American Family
Children’s Hospital. We wish you all the
best in your new position.
