PUTTING ESSENTIALS<br />
1<strong>Get</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />
basics right<br />
Everyone’s putt<strong>in</strong>g rout<strong>in</strong>e and stroke is<br />
slightly different, but however you do it,<br />
gett<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> fundamentals right is crucial<br />
if you want to <strong>hole</strong> your fair share.<br />
Th<strong>in</strong>gs we take for granted like stance,<br />
ball position and alignment can all slip<br />
if you don’t work to ma<strong>in</strong>ta<strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong>m.<br />
Balance po<strong>in</strong>t: Your<br />
weight should be through<br />
arches of your feet. You<br />
can practise by stand<strong>in</strong>g<br />
on an umbrella or a shaft<br />
and keep<strong>in</strong>g your balance.<br />
This ensures your centre<br />
of gravity can rema<strong>in</strong> fixed<br />
and <strong>the</strong>refore <strong>the</strong> strike<br />
on <strong>the</strong> blade has a greater<br />
chance of be<strong>in</strong>g consistent.<br />
Focus po<strong>in</strong>t<br />
Your eyes have great dom<strong>in</strong>ance over<br />
where <strong>the</strong> blade strikes <strong>the</strong> ball. This<br />
is crucial when <strong>the</strong> marg<strong>in</strong>s are so<br />
small <strong>in</strong> putt<strong>in</strong>g. If you’re look<strong>in</strong>g all<br />
over <strong>the</strong> ball throughout <strong>the</strong> stroke,<br />
your strike po<strong>in</strong>t is bound to change.<br />
To keep it constant, focus on <strong>the</strong><br />
same po<strong>in</strong>t every time. This might be<br />
a dimple, a blade of grass, or a dot<br />
on <strong>the</strong> ball. Don’t watch <strong>the</strong> blade as<br />
<strong>the</strong>se wonder<strong>in</strong>g eyes will h<strong>in</strong>der your<br />
impact po<strong>in</strong>t.<br />
Ball below left eye<br />
This ensures <strong>the</strong> lead<strong>in</strong>g<br />
edge of <strong>the</strong> putter is <strong>in</strong><br />
<strong>the</strong> centre of your stance,<br />
help<strong>in</strong>g you hit up on <strong>the</strong><br />
ball slightly for a great roll.<br />
