NSE, NIPC partner on Engineering Investmentin the countryThe Nigerian Society of Engineers(NSE) and the NigerianInvestment Promotion Commissionis working out a partnershipthat would lead to betterparticipation of Nigerian Engineersin Investment opportunitiesin the Engineering sector ofthe nation’s economy within theframework of the mandate ofInvestment Promotion Commission.In a meeting in Abuja, when thePresident of the Nigerian Societyof Engineers, Engr. OlumuyiwaAlade Ajibola visitedthe Commission, the ExecutiveSecretary, Engr. MustaphaBello said that the commissionwould like to work with the Societyin creating a conducive environmentfor local credible engineeringfirms to partner withforeign engineering companieswho seek advice from the commissionon their desire to formpartnerships with engineeringfirms for the purpose of investingin the country.Engr. Bello said the Commissionin the course of its activitiesrun into Construction Companiesabroad seeking partnershipwith Nigerian counterpartsand was of the view that theSociety stands to benefit fromsuch if the Commission had adirect data from the NSE oncredible engineering companiesas well as its membershipdata to allow the Commissionshare information directly.The Executive Secretary alsosaid the Commission would liketo work together with the societyin organising an EngineeringSpecific conference wherebig engineering consultantswould be brought in to showcasetheir models. He said suchan activity would expose Nigerianengineers and other professionalsto the fact that projectswere not only funded bygovernment but could bethrough a pragmatic Private-Public sector partnership.He said many countries in theworld, especially Turkey, hasworked with the Private Sector ina systematic manner to achieveall the benchmarks set for it tojoin the European Union in justfive years. He said Nigeria canapply such a model probably fora longer time to get to where itdesires to be under its vision202020.The President of the NSE, EngrAjibola who was elated with thedevelopment told the ExecutiveSecretary that the Nigerian Societyof Engineers has developed adata- base of all members andengineering companies in thecountry and has developed a software to aid interaction amongthem for the purpose of mentoringand sharing of ideas. Hepromised to make available allthe data whenever needed by thecommission.He called for closer working relationshipbetween the two bodiesadding that the society was alreadyplanning an EngineeringRoundtable focusing on Powerand Transportation which willbring major players and stakeholdersto network and proffersolutions affecting the sectors.Engr Ajibola said the roundtablewill not only feature presentationof papers but will be businessoriented with activities like exhibition.He said the society will ensurethat foreign companies lookingfor local partners are able to getcompanies with integrity that thesociety can vouch for. The twobodies agreed to set up a jointcommittee to work out the partnership.parts of the country who hadcome to rejoice with him. Heannounced that as part of hiscontribution to developmentof training in procurement, hewas working with friends toestablish a Procurement ResourceCentre in the universityto provide training onprocurement policies andhouse a library on procurementpractices for studentsand interested scholars.His said Nigerian Engineersare supposed to benefit fromthe procurement act as thereis a provision which seeks togive marginal considerationto local engineers in the biddingprocess for jobs.He announced that governmenthas approved someaspect of the Whitepaper onReport of the PresidentialCommittee on the StrategicPlans for Engineering Developmentand Control in Nigeria.He said that aspects thatwere yet to be accepted bygovernment would be lookedinto to see how they can beresolved.Earlier, Engr. Remmy Uche, theChairman of Owerri Branch andDean of Student Affairs of theFederal University of Technologyin his welcome addresssaid engineers should learn tounwind and network after doingso much hard work in the field.He said the purpose of the dinnerwas for the members to interactand rejoice with PastPresident Engr. Ezeh. He calledon Engineers to project and protectthe profession adding thatone of the ways of doing thatwas through telling one anotherthe truth at all times.The dinner was attended byEngineers from various parts ofthe country including the Presidentof the Council for theRegulation of Engineering inNigeria, (COREN), Engr MustaphaBulama , Deputy Presidentof the NSE, Engr. MustaphaShehu and Chairman of variousdivisions of the NSE.
President Ajibola gives a plaque to Wages CommissionChairman, Chief EgbuleNSE takes demand for enhanced salaries for engineersin Civil Service to wages commissionThe Nigerian Society of Engineershas called on theNational Income, Salariesand Wages Commission toimplement without delay anenhanced entry point intothe civil service for engineersas was the case withother professionals.The President of the NigerianSociety of Engineers,Engr. Olumuyiwa Alade Ajibolamade the call when hepaid a courtesy call on theChairman of the Commission,Chief Richard OnwukaEgbule in Abuja.“We are worried that theplacement of Engineers onSalary Grade level 08 step 4on entry into the civil servicehas not taken into accountthe peculiarities associatedwith the training, workschedules and responsibilitiesof engineers.We note that other professionalslike Doctors, Lawyers,Accountants and Geologistsare placed on enhanced entrypoints in the public servicewhile this is not the case forengineers”, Engr Ajibola said.According to him, the societyhas since 2005 made proposalsto the government for theimprovement of conditions ofEngineering practice in Nigeriawhich he said led to agovernment whitepaper onStrategic plans for EngineeringDevelopment and Controlin Nigeria amongst which is aproposal for an engineeringsalary structure.Engr. Ajibola noted that otherprofessionals like Doctors,Lawyers, Accountants andGeologists were placed onenhanced entry points in thepublic Service.“We therefore seek yoursupport for a new entrypoint to be approved. Weask that the entry point forengineers into the publicservice should be Gradelevel 10 step 4 and that engineersshould be upgradedto GL 12 step 5 immediatelythey get registered withCOREN while those alreadyregistered with COREN onentry will be on grade level12 Step 5” , the NSE Presidentsaid.Responding, the Chairmanof the National Income,Salaries and Wages Commission,Chief Egbule expressedshock that engineerswere not taken alongwith other professionals. Heasked the society to fight forthe revision of the schemeof service for engineerswhich he said was the onlyway the society can achieve
