Indulge in luxury, beauty and ‘savoir-vivre’ in Geneva – the world’s most animated city at Lake Geneva
Consistently ranked among the five
most expensive cities in the world,
Geneva is both a leading financial center
as well as a great city to visit on business
or on vacation. Often mistaken for the
capital of Switzerland it has earned the
soubriquet ‘Capital of Peace’ thanks to its
location as the European headquarters
of the UN, its many agencies, the
International Red Cross and the World
Health Organization.
Bol d’or MiraBaud regatta
Bol d’or MiraBaud regatta
Geneva is conveniently located on the western
tip of Lake Geneva – known locally as Lac
Léman – one of the largest lakes in Europe
with a surface area of 224 square miles. This
beautiful inland lake attracts many yachtsmen
to its waters as the trend for yacht and
catamaran racing has increased in popularity.
Water sports are an integral part of life on Lake
Geneva. Mountains and vineyards surround the
shores of the lake, governed on a 60/40 ratio by
Switzerland and France. Lake Geneva’s large
size, calm waters, underwater currents and
strong winds provide ideal racing conditions
for regattas with the first official Bol d’Or race
being organized in 1939. As it grew exponentially
over the years, the event has attracted an
international presence and now draws a global
audience to this exciting and largest freshwater
sailing competition in the world.
A humanitarian hub it may well be, but
Geneva’s gold card is its unique blend
of rich history, spectacular natural
panoramas, and an affinity for luxury
lifestyles. And of course, its superb
location near the borders of Germany
and France, nestled between the Alps,
Mont Blanc and Lake Geneva. Its Old
Town is a veritable medieval treasure
trove; the mix of Gothic and Romanesque
architecture clearly evident at St. Peter’s
Patek Philippe is the leading Geneva-based
collaboration between Antoni Patek and Adrien
1800s. Together they propelled the art of fine
and public figures to wear original (vintage)
Geneva is probably best known for being the
European Headquarters of the United Nations.
A trip to the UN Office is therefore a ‘must-do’
on your trip to the city. Housed in the ‘Palais
peacocks roam freely, the classic building
is twice the size of the Palace of Versailles
and offers visitors breathtaking views of
Lake Geneva and the Alps. Inside, numerous
artworks reflecting the many cultures
represented by the UN are on display. A tour
of this imposing building will lead you to the
stunning, one-of-a-kind ceiling sculpture by
contemporary Spanish artist Miquel Barceló. To
I would like to suggest a private visit to the famous Patek Philippe
Museum – home to the prestigious creations of the Geneva-based
master watchmakers, which was founded in 1839. Guests will discover
an extraordinary display of watches, musical automata and portrait
miniatures from the 16th to the 19th century. After the visit, guests may
enjoy a guided walking tour around the old city, accompanied by an expert
in the city’s history. A day trip to the traditional village of Gruyères, only 1.5
hours from Geneva, is a must for enjoying traditional Swiss scenery and
the chance to taste traditional cheese fondue. For the adventurous, why
not take a helicopter flight above Mont Blanc? Wine lovers will enjoy a visit
to one of the many vineyards outside Geneva to taste local varieties. And if
the weather allows, we can organize a cruise on a private yacht – complete
with lunch – so guests can explore more of the beautiful Lake Geneva.
dining
I recommend two restaurants where guests will definitely have a rewarding
gastronomic experience:
Auberge du Lion d’Or
A Michelin-Starred restaurant that enjoys a spectacular view over the lake
Why we love it: The Hotel Les Armures exudes character as only a 17th
century building can. The Prestige Junior Suite has immaculate wooden
floors and beamed ceilings, while blending modern furniture with historic
hearths, wrought iron and dressed stone walls. More compact in size,
yet big on comfort, the hotel makes its mark with understated simplicity.
Incorporating warm, neutral colors, the suite is a beautiful blend of
comfort and luxury. The room comes with a double bed, a bathroom with
separate shower and toilet, a mini-bar and a work station.
St. Peter’s Cathedral is located in Geneva’s Old Town and belongs to the
Swiss Reformed Church. Construction first began in the 12th century, and
this imposing Romanesque-Gothic structure with neoclassical external
features was completed over 150 years, including the replacement of
the Gothic façade in 1750. Today, the original parts of the cathedral that
survived Calvinist attacks and sacking during the mid-1600s are the
kaleidoscopic stained glass windows and the Romanesque capitals in
the nave. The interior of the cathedral is as eclectic as it is grand, with
noteworthy 15th century choir stalls, the Rohan chapel, the 14th century
Gothic Chapel of the Maccabees and breathtaking views over Geneva from
the cathedral’s north tower.
festivals in Europe, the parade is formed entirely
of volunteer members of the Geneva Historical
Society. Dressed in period costume, participants
commemorate the victims of that tragic
December night with exuberant re-enactments
of duels and music recitals. The celebration
reaches a crescendo with a massive bonfire
party in front of St. Pierre Cathedral.

The largest tourist event in Switzerland, the Geneva Festival attracts
hundreds of thousands of spectators to the shores of Lake Geneva each
year. The event is divided into two parts: the Prelude to the festival and the
festival proper. Beginning at the end of July, the Prelude is a gradual build
up to the main event which sees more than 120 free concerts, 60 carousels
and 150 food and crafts stalls bring the crowds flocking. Water sports take
place on the lake throughout—expect competitive rowing, lifeboat racing and
waterski jumping—and after dark, musical fireworks ignite the sky. The 2011
event featured a beach rugby tournament, and musicians and dancers from
as far afield as India. The fun fair with its lakeside big wheel is always a hit
with adults and children alike.
