BACKGROUND 

Bananas are important fruit crop in Indonesia and they are grown throughout the country from western part until 

eastern part. Most fruit is grown for domestic market. Banana farming expanded rapidly over the last decades; there 

has been a remarkable change in Indonesian agriculture from traditional and largely subsistence fruit cultivation 

towards the commercial production of fresh and processed fruits (Santika and Nadjamuddin, 1996). 

Indonesia is also a centre of origin and diversity of the genus of Musa. Great diversity of Musa (wild or cultivated) can 

be found from Aceh (Sumatera) until Irian Jaya (now Papua). A number of collecting missions of Musa have been done 

by research institutes and universities (Karyoto, 1996). However, not all of the members of Musaceae could be 

collected, because Indonesia is an ocean and islands country. So far, banana germplasm collections are only 

contained of Musa from Java and Sumatera. Collecting mission done by Solok Research Institute for Fruits in 

collaboration with INIBAP has been conducted. First mission carried out in Maluku Islands has been done, with the 

result 28 accessions of wild and cultivated Musa (Edison et al., 1996). Second mission was conducted in Irian Jaya 

(Papua). 

Irian Jaya lies at 131°-141°E and 0°-9°S with up to 300 ethnics live at 0 to 3100 m above see level (asl.). Banana 

cultivation is found throughout the island until 2500 m asl. Some ethnics use banana as a staple food. Irian Jaya is an 

adjacent of Papua New Guinea, which has many different diploid clones (Sharrock, 1990). Many of these clones are 

also found in Irian Jaya. 

METHODOLOGY 

The coordination of Solok Research Institute of Fruits with Central Research Institute for Horticulture and The 

Assessment Institute for the Agriculture Technology (AIAT) Papua is required for the successful of Musa exploration. 

Information of location and diversity of Musa was obtained from AIAT Papua. Based on the information from AIAT 

Papua the location of exploration was carried out at the central area of banana; district Jayapura and Manokwari. 

Activities of the exploration were characterization, documentation and sample collecting. Characterization of accession 

on the field was based on ‘Descriptors for Banana (Musa spp.)’ published by IPGRI-INIBAP/CIRAD (1996) and 

documentation of accession was taken by camera. Samples collected were suckers (minimum three suckers per 

accession) and seeds (if available). Information of Banana diseases was also gathered from the collecting sites.

Suckers selected for collection were approximately 10 cm in diameter at the base of pseudostem (corm). Prior to 

packaging, suckers were cleaned and cut until 10-15 cm in height and then dipped into Benlate solution (2 g/l) for 30 

minutes. The samples were allowed to dry by putting on the newspaper before placing into cartoon box prior to 

packaging. All sample collected were sent to Solok Research Institute for Fruits for in vitro culture and in vivo 

conservation.

RESULTS 

Under the information of AIAT Papua, they have banana collection field resulted by previous exploration. Previous 

exploration of banana was conducted by Dr. Adi Wijono (Institute of Science of Indonesia, Bogor) and AIAT Papua. 

They obtained 135 accessions from district of Jayapura, Manokwari, Merauke and Jayawijaya. They conserved the 

accessions in three collection fields. One of banana collection fields is located at Koya Barat, Jayapura. First activity of 

the exploration was characterization of banana collection at Koya Barat. 

Only 43 of 135 accessions were characterized, because not all of the accessions were in complete cycle (with flower 

and bunch) and some were synonyms. However, suckers were also collected from the accessions, which produced 

many suckers with good performance. The number of accessions obtained from Koya Barat was 66 accessions (Table 

1.). The collecting of Musa was continued to the area surrounding Sentani; there were Genyem, Nimbotong and 

Demta. One wild Musa shizocarpa and one cultivated banana (pisang Boi) were obtained from these locations. 

In Pami area, district of Manokwari, two wild Musa and four cultivated banana and plantain were found. These 

accessions were collected from the field of local farmer. In Manokwari, some farmers cultivated banana in their field 

with many cultivars. Another wild Musa were found alongside the road from Pami to Manokwari. 

During the exploration, the symptoms of Fusarium, bacterial wilt and banana bunchy top virus (BBTV) were not found 

in the locations. This may indicate that some area in Irian Jaya (Papua) still clean from those diseases. The evident of 

Irian Jaya still uncontaminated from Fusarium is the existence of pisang Barangan (AAA). Pisang Barangan is very 

susceptible to Fusarium wilt. Pisang Barangan that grows in most of garden of local farmer is vigorous with maximum 

size of bunch. This cultivar was introduced from Java. 

Some native cultivars of banana have similarity and synonym with those of Papua New Guinea (PNG), such as, pisang 

Boi (Irian Jaya) is a synonym of Kandrian from PNG, Kaikeja is a synonym of Kirkirnan from PNG, and another diploid 

AA cultivars with yellow-green bracts (Arnaud and Horry, 1997; Daniells et al., 2001). Pisang Boi always exists in all 

place of Irian Jaya. This cultivar also exists in Maluku Island (Edison et al., 1996). 

This mission still could not collect all both cultivated or wild Musa exist in Irian Jaya doe to geographical constraints. 

Mountainous terrain and lack of roads made access to certain area of Irian Jaya difficult, consequently, exploration in 

surrounding Jayawijaya Mountain could not be performed.
