"JULIA COME HERE!"
the lost phone
A TRUE STORY
Written by Julia F.
My mom yelled my name. What did I do? As I thought
what I could have done, I put my phone in my pocket
and ran to my parents’ room.
"Can you write down all the classes you took? I need
them for your transcript." My mother was standing at
her laptop and typing away like a mad person.
"Yes ma'am," I answered, and walked back to my
bedroom.
I sat down on my bed, found a notebook, and scribbled
down my classes. Then I headed back to my room.
I reached for my phone charger which was lying next
to an outlet. As I picked it up, my phone wasn't
attached.
I looked at my charging station that doubles as an
alarm clock.
It wasn't there either.
I looked at my bed.
I moved my pillows.
I moved my blankets.
I looked under my bed.
I looked on my widow seat.
And then I felt a buzz.
I felt a buzz again . . . and then checked my back pocket.
My screen read:
Sigh.
Don’t ask.
So I would now like to thank Amanda for texting
me because I wouldn't have found my phone.
BOYFRIENDS AREN’T IDOLS
Written by Rachel M.
Author's Note: I cannot say that I have this lesson
completely learned. It is a daily struggle to give your
heart to God—a daily submission. I also must say that
this idea was not entirely my own, but the story is
completely mine.
Lisa squealed as another text from her crush, Kevin,
popped up on the screen. When she saw what it said,
she emitted another squeal. Her best friend, Jess,
grinned at her across the room.
other friends. One day Jess came up and said to
her "Lisa, what's happened? I hardly get to talk
to you at all anymore!"
Lisa shrugged her shoulders and flipped her hair.
"Nothing's happened. I'm still your best friend."
Little by little, Lisa drew away from others and
drew closer to Kevin. Kevin, Kevin, Kevin. He
became her everything. The one person she
wanted to spend her time with. The reason she
woke up. The reason she went around with a
smile on her face. Before, God had been the
reason she woke up, the One she wanted to
spend time with, and the One Who put a smile on
her face.
Kevin became her everything.
The one person she wanted to
spend her time with—the reason
she woke up—the reason she
walked around with a smile on
her face.
"What's up?" she asked.
"Kevin just asked me out!" said Lisa, grinning from ear
to ear.
Jess was on the bed next to her in an instant. "Really?"
she asked. "That's great! What are you going to say?"
"I'll have to ask my parents first," said Lisa. She quickly
sent her mom a text asking her mom for permission.
Because her family had known Kevin's for years, her
mom quickly agreed. Lisa then sent Kevin a text,
saying she would love to go out on a date with him.
That was the beginning.
Before long, they were one of the most popular couples
at church. They both had a passion for God that others
envied. Besides just dating, they also would pray
together and serve at church.
Lisa wanted to be sure that she didn't start pushing
others out of her life, so she continued to invest time in
her family and friends. However, as the months, and
then a year, went by, she began spending more and
more time with Kevin, and less time with Jess and her
One day, Lisa confessed to Jess. "I just don't know
what I would do if Kevin broke up with me."
Jess frowned. "Lisa, have you considered that
maybe, possibly, Kevin has become an idol in
your life?" Continued on next page.
FIRST THING FIRST
Written by Katherine (Katie) M.
Hey, girls! My name is Katie Matesevac. In May, I
graduated from high school at Bob Jones
Academy. I’m here to tell you what college life is
like.
Well, so far, the best part of college is that it
hasn’t started yet. My three younger siblings all
had to go back to school on August 17 th . I will
move into the dorms on August 28 th , and classes
start on September 2 nd . So, for now, I get to stay
home and relax (and do my chores) until I move
in.
I didn’t have to move into the dorms, but I chose
to. My family lives less than five miles from Bob
Jones University, where I will be attending, but it
is much simpler for me to live in the dorms. I’ll be
closer to everything, and I won’t have to worry
about commuting back and forth for evening
activities.
I have two roommates, but I’ve only met one of
them. Her name is Kelly. My grandma, who lives
in Pennsylvania, introduced us three years ago.
WE have remained friends, despite only seeing
each other a few times since then. My other
roommate’s name is Jill. I’ve never met her, but
my dad knows her parents from when he was a
young man. I’m sure she’ll be very nice and we’ll
all get along wonderfully.
I was very careful in picking a roommate. My
mom has always said that you should never room
with your best friend, because you’ll hate each
other by the end of the year. So I picked Kelly,
because she was a nice, amiable girl who I knew
moderately well. Every time my grandma sees
me, she tells me how excited Kelly is that she is
Laugh out loud at the cute things that six-year-old
Benjamin and four-year-old Amelia say!
Rachel was asking her brother what a beaver is.
Benjamin insisted he knew, claiming it was as
follows:
“It’s a bird, like a goose. And it has red feathers
and it flies around.”
Amelia’s prayer one day.
“Thank you for the changing leaves.”
Her dad said, “Thank you for their beauty” so she
could repeat him.
Amelia promptly repeated, “Thank you for their
‘booty!’”
my roommate. I already know that we are going
to have a great year.
My biggest struggle this year will
probably be time management.
I have to fit classes, homework, devotions,
church, two jobs, and social time with my
friends into 24 hours a day, or 168 hours in a
week. And I can’t forget that I have to sleep and
eat as well! It will be a challenge, but I have a plan.
My first and primary goal is to do well in my
classes and to work hard at work. My
devotions must be faithfully attended to every
day. After I have completed these responsibilities,
I will enjoy time spent with my friends.
Church will still be very important. I will continue
attending Colonial Hills Baptist Church, where my
parents have taken my siblings and I since we
moved down to South Carolina. Although BJU has
chapel four days a week, church is still very
important because it provides a chance for
fellowship that is not available in chapel.
Continued from previous page.
I will also keep helping out in the two-and-threeyear-old
nursery Sunday School class as I have been
doing. I will also keep singing in the choir and
playing my trumpet in our mini orchestra. These are
the ways in which God has called me to serve, so I
have to keep doing them. God has richly blessed e
with many opportunities to serve Him, and I’m
thankful for them. I look forward to serving the Lord
in any capacity this year.
Please pray for me as I embark on this exciting
segment of my life. I look forward to telling you guys
all about my amazing college experience in later
magazines. See ya!
career
AUTHOR
Submitted by Amanda B.
If you check out our blog often, you know who Robin
Jones Gunn is. A few months ago, we made a review
video on her award-winning book series, featuring
Christy Miller. Now get to know the face behind the
books . . . and find out if a career as an author might
be something you would enjoy.
1. What kinds of books have you written?
I’ve been writing for over 25 years and have written
fiction, non-fiction, devotionals, children’s books and
novellas. Just about a little of everything.
2. What subjects do you have to study to be an
author? It varies, of course, depending on what field
of writing you plan to go into. I took a lot of English
courses as well as Creative Writing courses and
attended conferences on writing. Many of my writer
friends majored in Journalism and found that
prepared them to be able to write short pieces and
articles first. After that they expanded to writing
books.
3. What kinds of stories do you enjoy writing
best? The majority of the 85 books I’ve written are
fiction because I love telling stories. I like writing
about characters who feel like they could be real
people. In the story they are trying to understand
how God is leading them in whatever they are going
through.
4. Please describe a typical day of work
(writing). Every day is different. I’m an early riser so
for many years I’ve gotten up at 3am in order to
write for several hours while my thoughts are fresh
and the house is nice and quiet. Some days I write
on a laptop while sitting outside. Some days I sit at
my desk and work on the main computer. Other
days I’ll go to the beach and sit and write in my
journal.
What made you decide to be a writer? I’ve
always been a storyteller but I didn’t grow up
thinking I wanted to be a writer. I didn’t plan on
being a writer when I was in college. I was more
interested in doing foreign missions work or doing
youth ministry at a church. I married a youth pastor
and started writing for teens. The Christy Miller
series grew from one book into many more and I
continued to write as a result of the interest of the
readers. I honestly don’t think there has ever been a
moment when I decided to be a writer. I just wanted
to follow God and serve Him and this is where He led
me.
6. Where was your first job? I started working at a
Carl’s Jr. fast food restaurant when I was 16. It was
down the street from where we lived and I didn’t
have my driver’s license yet so I walked to work. We
had to wear uniforms with silly hats and I always
walked as fast as I could so that no one I knew from
school would see me.
7. Have you had any interesting things happen
to you while writing stories? Yes. Always. Many
of the interesting life experiences I’ve had ended up
in one of my stories eventually. When I was writing
the Sisterchicks series I was traveling around the
world to all the locations in the books. I went to
Australia, New Zealand, Paris, Venice, England,
Mexico, Finland, Hawaii and the Netherlands. Crazy,
fun things happened on each of those trips. Those
moments ended up in the books and sometimes my
editor would say that we needed to take those parts
out. They were too unbelievable. More than once I
remember telling her, “But they really happened.”
She would say, “Maybe so, but no one will believe it.”
When I was getting ready to do the research for
“Sisterchicks Go Brit” I invited my editor to travel
with me to England. She was thrilled to come along
and yes, crazy, fun things happened. From then on
she let me keep lots of those moments in the books.
8. What is the best thing about being an
author? For me the best thing is being able to do
what I was created to do. I love being able to be
creative and expressive through the stories I write.
9. Do you have to like certain things in order to
do this occupation? I think you have to get used to
a lot of criticism and a lot of people who want to tell
you what to do. You don’t have to like that sort of
constant input but I think you have to really like
what you’re doing and like people in a
compassionate sort of way. Otherwise the many
opinions you hear will make you want to become
more withdrawn.
10. How do you get ideas for new story plot
twists? From life. While I’m writing, I usually don’t
know what’s going to happen next in the story. I
know the characters and the problems they’re
facing. As I write, I think about what I’ve seen in real
life that is similar to what the characters are going
Page | 7 Volume 4, Issue 5

through and as I write the plot twists the ideas
just keep coming.
11. How do you create new characters? I cut
pictures out of magazines and paste them on a
piece of paper in one of my story notebooks. I
introduce myself to the character and ask their
name. It opens up a free flowing sort of
creativity in my imagination. I write down what I
think about that character and in a sense I get to
know them. Sometimes they remind me of
people I know and sometimes they are similar to
someone I’ve seen in a movie.
12. Have you ever earned any awards? If so,
what for? My first awards were from the Biola
Writer’s Conference for an article and one for
the most promising new writer. I won two
awards from the Mount Hermon Christian
Writer’s Conference for poetry and one for being
the writer of the year. I was honored with three
Christy Awards for excellence in Christian
fiction. I received two Reader’s Choice awards
from FHL of the Romance Writers of America.
My favorite award was one that I received in
sixth grade from the Daughters of the American
Revolution. I wrote an essay on “What America
Means to Me” and I won first place.
4 tbsps. unsalted butter, softened
1 2 / 3 c. boiling water
2 1 / 3 c. unbleached all-purpose flour
2 c. sugar
½ c. sour cream
2 large eggs
2 tsp. baking soda
1 tsp. salt
1 tsp. vanilla extract
For the chocolate fudge:
4 tbsp. unsalted butter
1 ½ c. chocolate chips
¾ c. heavy cream
2 ½ c. sifted confectioners' sugar
1 tsp. vanilla extract
For the filling and decoration:
1 ½ c. raspberry preserves
Fresh raspberries
Heavy cream
INSTRUCTIONS
1. Preheat the oven to 350 F. Butter and flour a
13x9x2 inch cake pan.
2. In a bowl, combine the chocolate, butter, and
boiling water and stir until smooth.
3. With an electric mixer set on low speed, add
the remaining ingredients until just combined.
So not overbeat.
4. Pour batter into prepared cake pan and bake
for 40 to 50 minutes or until a cake tester
inserted in the center comes out clean.
Continued on next page.
Continued from previous page.
5. Let cake cool in the pan on a rack for 10
minutes. Invert the cake onto the rack and let it
cool completely.
6. Cut the cake into cubes and let dry at room
temperature for a few hours.
To make fudge:
1. In a saucepan set over low heat, combine all
the ingredients and whisk until smooth. Keep
warm.
2. In a large bowl, arrange 1 / 3 of the cake cuber
in a layer, spread 1 / 3 of the raspberry preserves
over the cake in a thin layer, and drizzle with 1 / 3
of the fudge.
3. Repeat with 2 more layers of cake, raspberry
preserves, and fudge, decoratively swirling
fudge over final layer.
4. Chill for 4 to 6 hours. Before serving, decorate
the top of the trifle with fresh raspberries. Serve
with a pitcher of heavy cream.
Yield: about 8 to 10 servings
Note: When my sister Lydia made this, she made
a layer cake instead of a trifle. She just spread
the preserves and fudge in between each layer,
and then drizzled the extra fudge over the whole
thing and decorated with fresh raspberries, mint
leaves, and chocolate chips (her own idea). It
turned out amazing! She made it for a family
birthday, so she also wrote Happy Birthday on
white icing in the front.
BOOK NOOK
The school year can be so busy. It’s hard to find time to read when you’re writing essays, studying for tests,
practicing an instrument, playing a sport, or whatever else you enjoy participating in. Make it a goal to read
at least one book every month. Recommended: Flipped, Wuthering Heights by Emily Bronte, and Jane Eyre
by Emily’s sister, Charlotte.
