EDITOR’S NOTE
Amanda Brown
EDITOR - IN - CHIEF
One of the most worshipful experiences I ever had was taking a
bright yellow kayak out on a silvery lake one sizzling summer's
afternoon. There was something about bathing in pure sunlight
as I plowed through the water with the arms God had given me,
praying out all the good and ugly in my heart.
It was just me and God. The birds were even silent. The water
lapped up against the sides of the kayak like hungry puppies.
Later, I checked the time and was astonished I had been out
there praying and worshiping for forty-five minutes. How had
it felt so short? And, more importantly, how could I experience
something like that again?
Worship is often ritualistic. It’s something we check off of our
to-do list. I love worship where I'm standing in church, eyes
closed so I can really soak in the words; sharing God's goodness
with friends over avocado toast at a local bakery; singing songs
on Easter Sunday as the sun peeks over the horizon.
On the flip side, there is a movement among our generation
that insists that true worship can’t happen in a “stuffy church
building,” or that something sensational has to be added.
Honestly that couldn't be further from the truth because
worship is a heart posture. It’s something personal inside of us,
something deep that asks, “Will you choose to worship your
Creator in this moment?”

We pray this issue reminds you that life is an act of worship,
intentionally cultivated in every moment.

we have the lungs of a people who shout with
thunder, begging to be heard above the noise of our neighbors
but in the same breath, screaming for them to be heard as well. it
seems like being noticed is impossible. but we roar on, exclaiming the
curses from our hearts. in the crowd, we think that we are worthy but in
fact, we are worthless. that isn't seen—bc our vile nature has shielded our
eyes from the daylight, leaving a glint of truth. the one we fall back on
countless times
that truth of God is Mighty in all. in control of all. and in our suffering,
we bow. before that? hardly. but yes, in our crumbling ground, we
come before the Being who will fix it.

GOD-GIVEN
CHARACTERISTICS
I have really seen God move through my
work in terms of encouragement and
peace. “Blessed are the peacemakers” is
a powerful beatitude in our often chaotic
culture. I really see that God has given me
the gift of seeing beautiful things in the
mundane, and capturing them in a way
that brings peace to others. I am grateful
that I have been able to use this gift to
impact so many people!

WHAT IS CALICO
AND TWINE?
Calico and Twine began in 2018
and stemmed from my desire to be
a better steward of this earth and
to help others do the same.
There are so many high quality
secondhand items out there that
need new homes. I do the work
of curating a selection that is
both cute and useful. Calico and
Twine began as just a shop but
has since evolved into a lifestyle
space as a whole, where I also share
blog posts, videos, and slow-living
inspiration.
It has always been my plan to
keep Calico and Twine a very
small business. No warehouses,
no factories, and only family
employees. This sounds strange
in our culture of “bigger is
better,” but I have known from
the beginning that this business
and creative ministry God has
built through me is only “in the

meantime” until I am called
to be a wife and a mother,
which in my opinion is more
important than anything that I
am doing now!
I know I will probably always
need a space to express myself
creatively, so it is my hope that
Calico and Twine, or whatever
it may turn into, will be
something that can provide for
my family (present or future)
through the hard work of our
hands, all the while valuing the
importance of family and being
at home.
CREATIVE
OUTLETS
I have been expressing
my creativity through
photography ever since I was
12 years old, so taking and
editing photos will always be
near and dear to my heart. In
these past few years I have also
gotten more into videography
and posting on my Youtube
channel. I love being able to
tell a story through video in
a way that can't be done with
photographs. I also try to be
intentional about enjoying
activities that don't involve
technology. I love to knit,
sew, decorate, and bake bread
as well!

BEST
ADVICE for fellow creatives
My best advice for fellow
creatives is to place more
value in trial and error. It’s
easy to want instant results or
a consistent aesthetic at the
beginning of your journey, but
in my experience, some of my
best work comes from patience
and allowing time for growth.
Don’t be discouraged if it takes
longer than expected to find
your “niche” or what works
best for you. And ultimately,
follow where God is leading
you. Build your house upon
His foundation. Don’t begin
something and ask Him to
bless it after the fact; instead
ask Him to lead you where
He wants you, and then begin
building.
WAYS OF
WORSHIP
Growing up, my mom always
had a garden each summer and
as I’ve gotten older, I've learned
to love gardening as well. When
I work with my hands and
nurture what I’ve planted, I feel
closer to God and His intended
way for creation. While we do
a creative way I
worship Creator
live in a fallen world and our
agrarian society is long gone,
growing my own food and
beautiful flowers is my way to
slow down and give thanks to
God for this life and the beauty
that surrounds us.

OH BELOVED ONE | 10

MAY/JUNE 2020 OHBELOVEDONE.COM SOOO . . . WHAT IS WORSHIP?
Defined
The “official” Google definition defines worship
as:
(Noun) The feeling or expression of reverence and
adoration for a deity.
(Verb) To show reverence and adoration for (a
deity); honor with religious rites.
For me, worship is simply the act of living a
life of love for God and making it a lifestyle to
worship Him.
When I first think of worship, I see myself
plugging my earbuds in and singing to Christian
music. That’s when I feel closest to God. (Maybe
it’s because I can’t hear the seven people that
live around me and the toddler who just learned
how to throw tantrums when he can’t do
something he wants to do. And of course, all the
things he wants to do aren’t okay so he cries
his head off endlessly and flops himself on
the floor.) And it’s when I feel most at peace.
There’s those moments when you just feel
like God is so near to you and you feel so
loved. There’s nothing that can truly satisfy
you in life other than living a life of worship
for God. No man can truly satisfy your
longing to be truly loved and no money can
bring the joy that comes when you feel God’s
presence in your heart.
There is nothing that could ever come
close to the peace that I feel when I’m
really worshiping. Google can make a long
definition that makes it feel boring, but
worship is a lifestyle of love for Christ, and I
don’t think that could ever be boring.
OH BELOVED ONE | 11
Lifestyle
Even as a thirteen-year-old, life is very crazy.
And I know that a lot of people think that
they can’t have a life of worship because they
don’t have time to worship or pray or read
the Bible.
But how much time do we spend scrolling
through Facebook, Instagram, or Snapchat?
And also, we can praise and worship God
just by living. You don’t have to spend
an hour every day reading the Bible and
praying.
You can worship God for His goodness while
you’re brushing your teeth or making your
coffee. Or maybe you can thank God that
He had someone come up with the idea for
Starbucks. Start looking for the small things
in life that you miss and thank God for His
goodness in providing it for you.
Look for the blessings that He sends you.
Like that one day when you were in tears,
depressed, stressed, and alone, and then
someone sent you a text or called you and
told you that they were praying for you
and that they loved you. Or maybe you’re
driving to work and feeling really down.
Turn on some Christian music and sing.
Give God all the hope and love and joy that
you have and it’ll take away at least some
of the dreariness in the day. Let your life be
full of Christ.
Start looking for
the small things in
life that you miss
and thank God for
His goodness in
providing it for you.

MAY/JUNE 2020 OHBELOVEDONE.COM SOOO . . . WHAT IS WORSHIP?
What God wants
Worship must be truly from your heart. Do
you mean it? If you’re just telling God how
much you love Him, when in your heart it isn’t
really true, then that’s not worship. Worship is
something that comes from the heart. It’s an act
of love and when it’s true, that love is a powerful
thing. God wants you, not someone else, when
you worship.
He wants what’s true. He wants your love and
He wants true love.
Worship is an act of complete love and
adoration.

THE POWER OF CONVERSATION

OH BELOVED ONE | 14
MAY/JUNE 2020 OHBELOVEDONE.COM I RELATE
You walk into a brand new youth group because your dad got a new job and you
had to move to a new town. Your hands are sweating as your heart races, and
you wonder if the blue shirt was the right choice or if you should have gone
with the gray one. Standing off to the corner, you watch as the other girls laugh and
mingle and some of the guys play foosball in the corner.
You’re upset over the move because you miss your old friends, but so far you haven’t
found anyone you can connect to enough to talk about it. It’s rough having to hold
everything inside.
A girl walks up to you and smiles. “Hi, my name’s Sarah! What’s your name?” Before
long, you find yourself deep in conversation with Sarah. Turns out, you two are a
lot alike and a potentially awkward entrance turns out to be the beginning of a long
friendship.
Not only that, but Sarah is more than happy to listen to you rant about the move.
She always suggests several comforting Bible verses and invites you to a Sunday school
party at her house to meet a couple of her friends.
But what if Sarah had decided to stay in her comfort zone and just hang with her
friends? You would have been out in the cold.

We’re told as Christians that we should
invest in each other and encourage
one another (1 Thessalonians 5:11),
including those we know and those we
don’t. But what if we don’t know what
to say? How do we communicate and
invest in those who aren’t in our age
range?
Here are some basic questions that you
can ask anyone. From there, you can get
deeper and more intentional with your
questions.
How are you?
So many people use this phrase as a greeting and brush aside the reply.
It’s easy to just accept the “good” or “busy” that is so often the reply.
Is the other person truly “good” though? You’ll be surprised at how
many people are actually struggling and can use a sympathetic ear or a
bit of compassion.
You’re never too young or too inexperienced to offer a hug, Bible verse,
or even a piece of advice. Everyone struggles, and as Christians we’re
all part of one body and ought to help each other.
What can I be praying about for you?
This is a question that is too seldom asked. Even more seldom is it
pressed. Don’t let the person you asked get away with broad or “easy”
answers. Don’t be afraid to press them a bit to find out what they
really need.
Old or young, everyone appreciates the thought of someone else
praying for them. Remember to check in and see if the prayer request
has been answered!
OH BELOVED ONE | 16
MAY/JUNE 2020 OHBELOVEDONE.COM I RELATE
What has God been teaching
you lately?
This is especially good to ask your
elders about. Too often we brush aside
the wisdom of those older than us,
even though they’re more experienced.
Take some time to learn something
new from them. If you have a willing
and teachable heart, they’ll be more
than happy to tell you what they’ve
been learning.
Likewise, pour into those younger than
you. I still remember being a lowly
freshman in the youth group. My
whole week was made when a senior
girl sat next to me and just asked how
my week had been.
NO MATTER
YOUR AGE OR
STAGE IN LIFE
OR HOW LONG
YOU’VE BEEN A
CHRISTIAN, YOU
CAN IMPACT
OTHERS.
Be intentional with the connections
you make and be intentional about
making them.
Serve and respect the elders of the
church. Be intentional and friendly
to your peers. Go out of your way to
hang out with younger kids.
PEERS
As far as investing in peers and younger
people in general, there are so many
things you can do! Just a simple
conversation can make their day. Go
out of your way and be intentional. Let
them know that they matter.
With your peers, be intentional as well.
Joking around and laughing and talking
about the latest fashions are all good and
well. But don’t lose sight of what’s really
important. Ask them about their quiet
times and how you can pray for them.
ELDERS
Elders? They have so much wisdom and
knowledge, yet they’re often pushed
aside. Ask about their day, about their
families, or what the highlight of their
week was. Ask what they thought of the
sermon. Don’t miss the opportunity to
grow from their wisdom.
In short, dive out of your comfort zone to comfort others. It’s worth it.

Worship. The word makes me think of
church. Praying. Singing. Praise. And
undoubtedly it is. But does it extend
beyond that?
This was a question I found myself asking a little
while ago when I saw some friends talking about
it. “Art as worship,” said one friend, speaking of
her desire to learn this in the upcoming year
(@hannahmrodriguez). “Worship at work,”
wrote another friend in a blog post about three
ways we can practice this (www.notwopaths.
com).
Wow, thought I, really?
Then I heard a sermon by Timothy Keller about
faith and work. He said, among many other
things, that Christians should treat work as a
service to others and therefore as a gift unto
God (instead of a means to advance themselves
financially, in status, etc.).
I also studied Tim Challies's book Do More Better
where he explains that our purpose is to glorify
God. How? By doing good works in all areas of
OH BELOVED ONE | 22

life to serve Him and others.
How does this relate to worship, you ask? The
word “worship” as used in the OT means to bow,
fall, or pay homage. In the NT, it has a similar
meaning. But another word, also translated as
worship, is used too. This one is defined as “to
offer service.” So, in essence, we worship in two
ways (at least)—in words (like how we praise
God in church) and in work (doing good for
God's glory every day).
Worship does belong to the everyday. To the
ordinary tasks. When we make God the most
important thing in our lives and we try to serve
him in everything, it is worship.

I
usually serve in my church’s childcare
program once a month. Coming from a
family of nine kids and babysitting for others
over the years, I am quite in my comfort zone
when it comes to playing with children and
taking care of them. I do know, however, that it
isn’t like that for everyone.
Serving in a childcare program at your church,
however, can be an awesome way to get more
comfortable with children, learn how to take care
of them, and entertain them. It can also be such
a blessing to the parents of the children, allowing
them to be refreshed and rejuvenated spiritually
and emotionally through worshiping God with
other believers and hearing a sermon.
In addition to being a blessing to the parents,
it is also a blessing to the children. Depending
on how old they are (and thus how much they
can understand), THEY ARE TAUGHT
ABOUT CHRIST IN WAYS THEY CAN
UNDERSTAND AND ARE LOVED BY
OTHERS WHO KINDLY PLAY WITH
THEM AND INVEST IN THEIR LIVES.
Now, don’t be concerned if you feel uncertain
as to know how to play with kids. It can be
something that takes practice, and honestly, I’m
not always the best at it. But just be creative!
Children under two are probably the
simplest to entertain—they are easily content
with rattles, songs, picture books, stuffed animals,
blocks, or even something as simple as a spoon.
Kids that young really don’t need a lot to be
happy. I noticed this when my nephew came
over when he was six months old. He preferred
playing with and sucking on a plastic spoon more
than with his actual toys!

designed women for specifically.
Today in our culture being a mother
is often looked down upon, as if it is
something that is not allowing a woman
to fulfill her full potential or is something
that keeps her back from something
more important and better. It can often
be painted as a burden rather than an
empowerment.
But that mindset is so wrong and contrary
to how motherhood and having children
is portrayed in the Bible. Having children
was like a woman’s treasure in the Bible
times. It was her identity.
I’m not saying that women can’t be
anything else in addition to being a
mother, or they can’t have a career, but I’m
using that example from the Bible as a way
to show you how important and great it is.

It’s a hard job, but it's extremely rewarding.
Lastly, serving in a nursery, preschool,

great way to CONNECT WITH THE
PARENTS of the children whom you’re

with several moms in my church partly
because of caring for their children. And
those moms can also be WHOLESOME

So caring for children is a fantastic way to

as you serve Him.
Rather than a burden, it is a beautiful gift
and ability. We women have the amazing

Throughout my Christian walk I
have found joy through worshiping.
Knowing that our God is worthy of
our praise and that He deserves our
adoration has been something that
I have loved growing in and finding
different ways that I can worship
Him.
Last semester I took a class that
my school requires of all students
under our Visual and Performing
Arts department. They call it The
Creative Christian. At first I was not
the happiest camper to have to sit
and learn how I can bring God into
my art, because frankly it sounded
cheesy.
I was instead surprised to learn that
it was a critical class that I needed
for my own personal walk. I learned
how many different people worship
and how as an artist (albeit digital),
I can incorporate Christian themes
into what I do.
Here are some of my favorite quotes
about worship.

I’d just like to say this here and now
because it’s very, very important:
Worship is supposed to be enjoyable!
This is that praise service with lyrics
on half-charged phones. This is
that moment in a church when the
instruments go silent and there is
nothing in the air except the sounds of
voices cascading over each other in the
last verse of a hymn. This is that girl
locked in her room, crying, thumbing
out the chords to “Be Still My Soul”
on a twice-broken ukulele.
This is the little moments, the daily
repetition, the everyday choice to show
God that we are grateful.
Worship is so sacred that it can happen
anywhere, any time, any place, by
any one of God’s people. That is an
amazing truth. And music is one of
the biggest ways of expressing that
love and that praise, whether it’s just
humming under your breath or leading

a whole congregation in a song.
And that’s beautiful.
—
I didn’t always believe that.
See, I used to play violin for
church. And I always felt like I was
performing rather than actually
worshipping. Whether that was
due to my own internal issues, the
outside expectations and demands
to be perfect, or just a really sad
environment that didn’t realize what
worship truly was, it was a very
messed-up way of looking at things.
Looking back now, it was a situation
that should not have existed. You
can’t glorify God out of obligation and
fear. You have to do it from love.
I know that now, and if you’re
reading this, then you know that
too. Somewhere inside of you,
you’re reading this article with a
desire to worship God through
music, or at least with an interest
in it.
And that is what we are here to
talk about!
the prelude
When most people think of
worship or serving in the church,
one of the first questions that
comes to mind is “Should
insertnamehere join the church
ministry team?” After all, music and
dance are mentioned so
much in the Bible (Psalms 150 and
33:2; Nehemiah 12:27), it has to
be important.
And it totally is. Why else would
God create something as beautiful
as music if not for us to burst into
it and sing His melodies back to
Him? This is kinda what we were

created for, right?
With that reasoning and intent, you
absolutely should. I think many local
music leaders would be immensely
encouraged to have people willing to
help out and sing or play instruments.
That dedication is amazing.
However, well-meaning Christians
can lose sight of what worship truly
is and either use the music ministry
as a platform for personal gain or
force young people into singing
for the same misplaced purpose.
It’s in instances like that where it’s
important to remember that Christ
must increase and we must decrease,
so if you’re joining the worship team
to feel good about yourself or to get
attention then you probably shouldn’t
join. This is something that’s worth
considering when thinking about
church worship.
SOME THINGS I'D MENTION:
Should I join if I don’t sing well? That really depends on your church/your interest. For
some churches, you have to audition to be in the worship team. For others, there is literally
nobody that wants to do it and you’re the only one left. To each their own. While it really
doesn’t matter if you have a good voice or not, again, it’s important to think about the skills
God has given you and the areas in which you can use those skills. You don’t need to be in front
of a microphone to lift your voice in worship (Romans 12:4).
I can play an instrument; should I look into playing for church? Same as with singing! I know for me
personally, it’s always refreshing to play with another musician for church and hear that harmony sound out, and it’s a
wonderful way of using those skills. But again, don’t join out of duty/wanting recognition because you will be sorely
disappointed if that’s your reason for joining.

set list
Alright, now we’ve gotten into
one of the hardest parts of being
in church music: the church
musicians.
There’s a lot of joy in creating
music with like-minded souls,
but there’s equal amounts of
conflict, frustrations, passiveaggressive
prayers, and occasionally
drumsticks snapping in two
mid-air (This actually happened.
Someone dubbed the incident
“divine intervention.”).
Working with other people
always leaves room for mistakes
and hurt and a lot of realizing
that people are very, very flawed.
At times you’ll be staring at
your fellow teammates on their
phones, seemingly not caring
that you can’t get the key change
right, and you’ll be thinking, “Am
I the only person who even cares
that this is good?? Why can’t they
be more serious? More dedicated?
More like me?”
that together
you may
with one
voice glorify
the God
and Father
of our Lord
Jesus Christ.
Romans 15:6
Remember that you have so many flaws as well and keep. Calm. About. It.
We’re here to build each other up, and now is not the right time to compare yourself
to your teammates because we are all messed up, okay? We’re offering a broken melody as
broken people, and the only position of importance is held by God, so don’t look down
on everyone just because they’re not cooperating. Talk it over. Pray. Hold your ground.
You are all working toward the same goal:
worshiping God. Just because the ways you go about it
might be different, that doesn’t mean you’re more valid for
your way or they’re less worthy because of their way. In the
end, you have the same goal. You’re working together, not
against each other.
Show! Up! To! Practice! Just as being there for each other is encouraging, the inverse
can be a real kick in the gut. Seeing people not prioritize being there, not giving it their
all, not being willing to go above the bare minimum, and just going with it because they
have to and not because they really want to is the perfect way to let someone down. It
doesn’t help the church when the people who are leading it in worship can’t make time
to prepare. If you’re doing this, do it wholeheartedly.

closing number
Be mindful of your
surroundings. This isn’t that big of
a deal, but something I’ve been told
from people is how they feel like it’s
rather disrespectful when the gravitas
and respect in a church service don’t
seem to apply to the choir members
and musicians (i.e. setting up
instruments during prayer, talking
among themselves, etc.).
Whatever your stance on things like
that, be as respectful to your fellow
Christians as possible, since this
ministry is for them as much as it is
for you.
Nothing's gonna be perfect.
Sometimes the congregation won’t
follow along with a song no matter
how hard you practiced it, or the
Powerpoint won’t work, or a guitar
string will snap, or the mics will stop
working, and you’re going to stare
up at the rafters and question your
existence.
Those little hiccups might not
seem or feel noteworthy, but in the
moment they happen, they suddenly
become all you can think about. It’s
all right: those things happen, it’s up
to you how you choose to handle it.
If there is still worship and you gave
it your best, then you didn’t fail, even
though your sound system did.
This is ENJOYABLE. Yes, worship
is serious and holy and sacred, and
there are times for laments and for
soft, quiet, slow hymns, but don’t
forget the life part of the Christian life.
Kick it up a notch and put the joy in
enjoy and have fun being able to stand
up and say, “This is God. This is the
joy He gives. This is who He is. This
is the life He wants for all of us.” That
enthusiasm will shine through your
music, and it’s one that will last long
after the last note is played.
I play guitar now, ironically. I’ve had
my voice crack, the beat off by so
much, and my knee bounce in fear. So
many times I’ve wanted to kick myself
for messing it up. But at the end of
the day? It’s still worship. And it still
glorifies God. And it’s still good for
my soul. And that’s the point. These
notes are still meaningful, and that’s
why we still sing them.
But I will sing of your strength; I will
sing aloud of your steadfast love in the
morning. For you have been to me a
fortress and a refuge in the day of my
distress. Psalm 59:16
*in all seriousness, though, TUNE YOUR INSTRUMENTS AND SING IN PITCH. THANK YOU.

Almost all of us have heard these

the more popular and played
worship songs out there. And
while I don’t have a problem with
this song necessarily, I think that
often its lyrics are thrown around
with lack of thought to their
meaning.
Let me first ask you when (or
even how often) do you tell God,
“Here I am to worship.” I’ll be
honest, I rarely even think that
phrase, much less “say” it or utter
it under my breath. Worship is
more than just going to church
and spending a couple hours
listening to a sermon and singing
a couple songs. It is about
everyday life, about being there
for God in everything. Here are a

Get in
the Word.
Say yes to
His will.
Bask in His
character.
Yes, I know we have all heard
this a million times in a million of
different ways, but DO IT. How
are we supposed to even begin
to worship God properly if we
don’t know how to begin? And
where do we find out how to
begin? Scripture.
This is hard but vital. Part
of worship is surrendering
all, regardless of reasons or
circumstances. In every moment
of every day, be present and
available for God. You never know
what He may have for you or how
He may choose to use you to fulfill
His great purpose and plan.
The One who holds the oceans
in His hands and numbers every
grain of sand, HE is worth it. He
deserves our full devotion and
attention. When you’re discontent,
rest in the contentment God gives.
When you’re angry, remember that
God appeased His wrath through
the sending of His Son for you so
that you do not have to feel anger.
When you see His creation, marvel
in it! After all, if He made it, what
could be better?
I could go on because worship is such an expansive topic. But
from this I hope that you got just a glimpse of my thoughts on
the subject.
“Great is the LORD and greatly to be
praised; His greatness is unsearchable”
(Ps. 145:3)
So keep worshiping. Tell God that you’re here and available for
Him at any moment. He’s worth it, I promise.

Growing up I always went to whatever

most part, I’ve loved the churches my
parents took me to, but I was excited
to find a church that was best for me.
Finding a church on your own is

to do both before and while you are
looking.

MAY/JUNE 2020 OHBELOVEDONE.COM CHOOSING A CHURCH
TIP 1: Ask
yourself
what you
need in a
church.
For me it was important that I went to a
big church. I didn’t want a mega church but
after going to a small church for two years,
I wanted a bigger church community. I
also really wanted some sort of young adult
group that I could attend mid-week.
If you are interested in ministry, make sure
there are places that the church will let you
serve in. If you want to be a missionary,
make sure the church goes on frequent
mission trips.
Make a list of what is important to you.
Note theological stance points as well.
?
TIP 2: Talk
to people
about what
to look out
for.
My senior year of high school,
my youth pastor did a two-week
series about finding a church
when you go out to college. It
was really helpful to get advice
about church hunting. I suggest
you sit down with your parents
or former youth leaders and
talk about what to look for in
a church and what to stay away
from. Make sure you go into a
new church with an open mind,
but also be cautious of false
teaching.
TIP 3: Talk
to people
in the
community.
When I went off to college I was living with my aunt and uncle. My aunt
knows the church community very well and is close with many of the local
pastors. I asked what churches have a bad reputation and are better to stay
away from. I also asked her about churches she recommended for me to try
out. If you are moving somewhere, reach out to people and ask what they
recommend.

...
MAY/JUNE 2020 OHBELOVEDONE.COM CHOOSING A CHURCH
TIP 4: Be
prepared
to try out
churches
more than
once.
You most likely won’t know if a church
works for you after one visit. Unless
you know after one visit that the
church definitely doesn’t work for you,
give it more than one chance.
TIP 5: Be
patient.
It’s going to take a while to find a
church. The first church you visit
probably isn’t going to be the church
for you. It may take months to find the
right church. Pray and ask God where
He wants you to go.
Remember that God
knows what He’s doing.
God has you somewhere
for a reason. Trust His
plan. You will find the
right community.
BONUS:
Get a
church
buddy!
I had to visit a bunch of different
churches all on my own and honestly
it wasn’t fun. It’s hard going to a new
church because you don’t know where
to sit. Get a friend or sibling to visit
churches with you. It’ll make the
whole experience more fun.

A
wave swept across the
United States in the late
1960s called the Jesus
Movement, the largest revival
since the nineteenth century.
Hippies and druggies and
teenagers and flower children
and people who had once
never dreamed of stepping into
a church were baptized and
turned their lives around.
It was a movement we haven’t
seen since, a movement that
made newspapers and national
magazines, a movement that
changed the culture of the
church.
Yesterday I found myself
standing near the stage with
a room full of people of all
different ages and ethnic groups
who attended churches from all
over the area. We were there for an
all-day class sponsored by the Billy
Graham Association on preaching
the gospel and how to step out in
faith.
I’ve grown up hearing about Billy
Graham and the revival that swept
across the world in the '50s and
'60s, becoming known as the Jesus
Movement in the early '70s. I’d
heard about the crusades and how
my grandfather was saved through
a message Billy Graham taught
on TV. I found it an honor to be
able to attend a class and worship
session with people who were a
part of what he began before I was
born.
Some of us in that room probably
had very little in common, but one
by kara linaburg
OH BELOVED ONE | 49

thing bound us together: we were all
there to worship our Lord and Savior
together and to stand united in the
gospel message.
It wasn’t about where we were from
or how people were dressed. It wasn’t
about who went to what church
or what version of the Bible we
preferred. It wasn't about whether we
agreed what genre of music should
be played or what political party
we belonged to. There was a unity
there that I don’t see in many church
buildings, a love that often gets lost
in the minor things.
Just a heads up: I am a PK. I’ve never
not attended church. My family was
the first one there Sunday morning
and the last to leave, and the only
time you didn’t go was when you
were sick or dying (just joking . . .
kinda).
Fellow PKs will understand—you
live and breathe reaching out
to people and being involved in
ministry. That is the blood that flows
through your veins. It’s often so a
part of you, that church becomes a
habit or (if you’re not careful) a ritual
that you can’t imagine not doing
simply because it’s always been there.
I have visited many different churches
of many different denominations,
beliefs, and worship styles. I have
interacted with people in all walks
of life and have boxes of photos and
memories to prove it. Don’t get me
wrong: being a pastor’s daughter
has been one of the challenging yet
rewarding parts about who I am.
Yesterday though in that time of
worship, for the first time in as long
as I can remember, I experienced the
church as it was intended.
The Church isn’t a building, a certain
denomination, or people group. It’s
not about a certain worship style,
music, or whether or not you use
instruments. It’s not about how long
you’ve “been saved,” or if you use
KJV or ESV.

I find myself so easily slipping into a
judging attitude towards the church
because of what it’s become in
modern America. Today, 75% of our
generation who grew up in Christian
homes are abandoning their faith.
They say that churches are more
concerned about fellowship and
drawing people in for attendance
numbers than the things that really
matter.
It’s become a place where we reject
those different than us, where we’ve
forgotten to love, to hold another
accountable and forgive when we
fail. We’ve forgotten that the church
is a place of broken Jesus followers,
and that alone should bring us

We are united because we are saved
by the love of Jesus Christ and
because we choose to follow Him
no matter the cost. I know how easy

MAY/JUNE 2020 OHBELOVEDONE.COM STRONGER THAN THE DIVIDE
We are supposed to embrace our
brokenness and remember the
healing Christ promises. Instead
we leave our junk at home and play
perfection, when that is the last
thing Jesus asks of us. Our junk
is the very reason we need Him.
We are broken people. I have seen
too many Christians divided over
worship music styles or service
times instead of focusing on what
really matters.
We should step up and learn
together, to realize we are each on
a journey for Truth. We should all
be willing to learn, to admit that at
times we're right and you're wrong
and . . . sometimes we're both
wrong. The church is a place to be
challenged, to grow, to heal, to rise,
to be united in the common goal
to live our lives for the One who
made us.
I feel we have forgotten what it
means to love as Christ. We accept
who we want and leave out the
rest. The Jesus Movement of my
grandparents' and parents' day has
long since faded. We’re back to the
generation hungry for authenticy,
something real we can grasp,
something more than what the
world is offering us.
Time says that millennials are
dying from what they call, “deaths
of despair.”
It hurts my heart, this darkness.
And yet I too am guilty.
The reality is we are all broken, but
the reality also is that we are Loved
despite that. That alone gives me
hope.
As I stood in worship with people
from my home state, as I watched
churches come together as the
church, it gave me hope—hope
that we can stand together as God
intended, that the love of Christ is
stronger than the divide we create.
And that Love alone is going to
carry me into tomorrow.
Churchgoers are
like coals in a fire.
When they cling
together, they keep
the flame aglow;
when they separate,
they die out.

WALKING IN
WORSHIP.
What were my biggest takeaways from this issue?
What are some mundane things I can mindfully worship God
during?
What are some unique ways that I can worship God
(perhaps according to my talents/opportunities)?

MAY/JUNE 2020 OHBELOVEDONE.COM WHAT IS SALVATION
WHAT IS SALVATION?
Ever wonder why some people can be so bad? So mean?
Why sometimes even you succumb to these feelings
of anger, jealousy, and lust? That's because all people,
including you and me, have a sin nature. This sin separates
us from God. He's so perfect that He can't even be in the
presence of a tiny bit of sin. Not only does sin separate
us from God, but there's also a price to pay for it: death,
after which comes suffering in Hell, burning for the rest of
eternity.
But God wants a relationship with us and doesn't want
anyone to perish, so He sent His Son, Jesus Christ, to take
the penalty of our sin. He took our place when He died
on the cross for us.
But it doesn't stop there, because Jesus did something we
couldn't do: three days after He was crucified, He rose
again! He defeated death. And, when we accept His gift
of salvation, we become a Child of God and get to spend
eternity in Heaven with Him.
So how do you accept this gift, you ask? Believe that Jesus
Christ is the Son of God and He died on the cross for
your sins, raising on the third day and defeating death.
Confess your sins and repent (turn away) from them.
If you have any questions, please feel free to write us
on our Instagram @oh.beloved.one or Facebook. If you
accept Jesus into your heart, praise God! We want to
celebrate with you, so please let us know! You may want to
look at our previous issue, Grow, which talks about doing
devotions. This is dedicating a small part of your day to
reading God's Word and learning about Him. For the rest
of the year, we'll be going over different aspects of your
Christian walk in great detail, so we hope these issues will
be a great encouragement to you!

Oh yeah . . . that whole taking your towel thing. What does
service look like for the young Christian? Is it all dirty feet, or is
there something more to this biblical command? Find out in
