Worship Issue (May/June 2020)
Oh Beloved One | May/June 2020 | Vol. 9, Issue 3 Worship is more than a pew. Especially in light of the current pandemic, we’re realizing that the church isn’t a building. It’s a body of believers doing life to the glory of God. But what does that look like for young women? How can I cultivate a life of mindful worship? That’s what this issue is all about. This year, we’re taking a look at the ELEMENTS of our faith. Every year we choose a theme, and this year we’re really focusing in on what makes up the practical parts of our faith. We’ll be looking at devotions, prayer, worship, serving, witnessing, and edifying. This is our issue focused on worship. Be mindful of your
surroundings. This isn’t that big of
a deal, but something I’ve been told
from people is how they feel like it’s
rather disrespectful when the gravitas
and respect in a church service don’t
seem to apply to the choir members
and musicians (i.e. setting up
instruments during prayer, talking
among themselves, etc.).
Whatever your stance on things like
that, be as respectful to your fellow
Christians as possible, since this
ministry is for them as much as it is
for you.
Nothing's gonna be perfect.
Sometimes the congregation won’t
follow along with a song no matter
how hard you practiced it, or the
Powerpoint won’t work, or a guitar
string will snap, or the mics will stop
working, and you’re going to stare
up at the rafters and question your
existence.
Those little hiccups might not
seem or feel noteworthy, but in the
moment they happen, they suddenly
become all you can think about. It’s
all right: those things happen, it’s up
to you how you choose to handle it.
If there is still worship and you gave
it your best, then you didn’t fail, even
though your sound system did.
This is ENJOYABLE. Yes, worship
is serious and holy and sacred, and
there are times for laments and for
soft, quiet, slow hymns, but don’t
forget the life part of the Christian life.
Kick it up a notch and put the joy in
enjoy and have fun being able to stand
up and say, “This is God. This is the
joy He gives. This is who He is. This
is the life He wants for all of us.” That
enthusiasm will shine through your
music, and it’s one that will last long
after the last note is played.
I play guitar now, ironically. I’ve had
my voice crack, the beat off by so
much, and my knee bounce in fear. So
many times I’ve wanted to kick myself
for messing it up. But at the end of
the day? It’s still worship. And it still
glorifies God. And it’s still good for
my soul. And that’s the point. These
notes are still meaningful, and that’s
why we still sing them.
But I will sing of your strength; I will
sing aloud of your steadfast love in the
morning. For you have been to me a
fortress and a refuge in the day of my
distress. Psalm 59:16
*in all seriousness, though, TUNE YOUR INSTRUMENTS AND SING IN PITCH. THANK YOU.

not a lot of that to begin with. She rants about life and love and other stuff while simultaneously belting showtunes on https://
