HAZARDS OF
FEEDING DUCKS
As many of you may have noticed the
Tree Ducks, also known as Mexican
Whistlers, have returned to Sydney
Harbour in ever increasing numbers
each year, while our Mallards have
decreased. They appear to be most
prevalent in the area of 10-12 homes
surrounding where homeowners feed
these wild birds. While observing
the ducks is enjoyable and feeding
them may even be fun, the majority
of homeowners have found them to
eventually become quite a nuisance
and difficult to get rid of once feeding
is started. The mess, along with
the health hazards to the ducks,
additional wildlife, pets and even humans has created frustration, expense,
decrease in use of outdoor space and even serious illness among pets in
our neighborhood.
Feeding the ducks, according to the US Wildlife and Fisheries Department,
the governing body charged with managing waterfowl, can result in several
illnesses among the ducks themselves and has resulted in the actual death
of large numbers of ducks in some areas when there is an epidemic of
disease. When large numbers of ducks congregate in small areas such
as our waterways, they are often eating and defecating in the same areas.
Uneaten food can mold, causing illness and attracts rodents. Bread is very
hazardous to ducks. Large populations concentrated in small areas also
encourage competition for food and mates. During the mating season, when
there is such competition, males often kill off by drowning the females while
fighting for “privileges.” It has been observed near Grotto Point that this
winter there are 24 male mallards and only one female. Over the past few
years many of us have observed the violent deaths of these females. The
nesting by the female mallards in our flowerbeds is not just a nuisance and
health hazard but unsafe for the ducks. The baby ducks rarely survive due
to turtles, large fish, dogs and cats and rodents, despite the efforts many of
our residents go through trying to save them. This is a further indication that
ducks are better off when they can nest in areas that are natural habitats…
ducks have survived for thousands of years not being fed by humans! And
creating dependence on humans for food leads to death by dogs and cats
and even automobiles as these creatures lose their natural fear of humans
and wander our neighborhoods.
One average duck creates 1/3 lb. of feces every day. Multiply that by over
100 counted in one 10-12 home area alone, that is 33 pounds of feces per
day being deposited in the water, on our yards, docks, bulkheads, driveways
and rooftops. The concentration can result in degradation of the quality of
water and increase in algae growth, which is something our HOA dues is
paying to prevent. Additionally, the feces can increase the concentration of
e-coli in the water. While swimming in our waterways is prohibited, many
of us enjoy canoeing and kayaking and contact with e-coli contaminated
water can result in personal illness. Bird feces in general can result in many
illnesses including salmonella, giardia and general bacterial infection causing
gastrointestinal illnesses. You, your children or pet walking outside in areas
contaminated by duck feces can actually track it inside your home to your
carpet or flooring. There is also anecdotal information that the droppings
are highly corrosive and can damage or cause deterioration to any building
material including shingles and wood. They may also carry mites and a
“bedbug” type insect that can invade our outdoor furniture cushions.
Cleaning up after the ducks that have left unsightly messes on docks
and bulkheads is a necessity to keep our community clean and pleasant
appearing. However the CDC has strict guidelines for how to safely clean
bird feces, which involves wearing protective clothing, a mask and even a
respirator when there is a large concentration of droppings. Spores from the
feces that can be infected with histoplasmosis can travel for long distances
and when inhaled, can cause a serious respiratory fungal infection. Those
most susceptible include infants and children, people with compromised
immune systems such as those undergoing chemotherapy, those with
asthma or respiratory diseases and the elderly.
Jim Steinbaugh, the Special Agent with the US Fish and Wildlife Department
says that the most effective deterrent to nuisance ducks is to STOP
FEEDING them. They will eventually move on to natural food sources. It is
illegal to feed them in common areas and common waterways. Deterrents
include loud noises, mylar balloons, decoys of predators such as hawks and
coyotes and squirting them with a water hose. There are also spike strips
that can be placed along the bulkhead and dock but are costly and they
can easily fly over them. Consistency is the key as well as daily relocation
of visual deterrents. And in some cases, the roosting takes place over night
in which case most of us are asleep. But he also states that once the ducks
become accustomed to your deterrents they will return. It appears that
resident feeding usually takes place just before dark and early am, so the
ducks are waiting at surrounding docks and bulkheads. This would be the
prime time to use your deterrents. In special cases where duck populations
are determined to be a health hazard by agents such as Mr. Steinbaugh,
there are some provisions for eliminating some of the ducks, by permit only.
We are very hopeful that would never have to happen.
Neighborhood streetlights are one way to help curb crime. If
you see a streetlight that is out, get the six (6) digit number
located on the base of the light pole and an approximate
address/location of the outage. Go to www.centerpointenergy.
call 713-207-2222. Most repairs take 1-2 days. There are no
inspections for streetlights conducted by the HOA, specific
residents or Centerpoint, so it’s important that all residents
participate in reporting these outages.
PREVENTING
ROACHES FROM
ENTERING YOUR HOME
By Sydney Harbour’s Landscape Committee
At various times of the year we find roaches
invading our homes. There are some
preventative measures that we are able to take
in our yard to help minimize this. American
cockroaches prefer warm, damp areas like
flowerbeds, under mulch and piles of leaves. They prefer to consume
decaying matter. Taking time to remove fallen tree leaves as well as pulling
back mulch away from the foundation of your home will help keep them away
from the inside of your home. Also, check your door weather stripping. If
damaged, they may enter through the tiny gaps. If you wish to implement
outdoor roach bait, consider doing it away from your home. Taking a few
minutes to implement these measures may help reduce those pesky critters.
GARDENING TIPS FOR APRIL
Mulch - If possible, buy Bagged Mulch. Bagging helps eliminate a great
many pests that die from various causes while in the bag. When you buy
‘loose’ mulch that is trucked to your home, you are also buying ants, roaches,
termites, etc… Spend a little more on bagged material and save lots of
future pest problems. Keep your mulch at least 4” - 6” below the top of your
homes exposed foundation edge/side. This will aid in minimizing pests in
your home and allow for quick and accurate termite inspections.
Shrubs, Flowers and groundcovers - Trim all shrubs/plants at least 12”
- 18” back from your home. Do your best to create a plant free zone that is
18” - 24” wide around your home. The exception is your lawn - it can grow up
next to the slab as long as you keep it 4” - 6” below the top of the slab. The
most conducive to termite infestation are groundcover plantings, growing
high against your homes exterior or (especially) ivy that grows on your walls.
Trees - Spray your trees at least twice annually. The spring spray eliminates
overwintering pests and fungi while preparing trees to resist the pest
onslaught of summer with residual pesticides. The fall spray also kills pests
from the summer, prevents most fungi from occurring over the winter and
puts your valuable asset off to a healthy winter’s dormancy.
Lawn - Spring is the perfect time to do a fungicide treatment to stop brown
patch in its tracks along with other fungi. If your lawn is thin and weak in
some areas, here are some important fundamentals: a) lawn aeration b)
fertilization c) weed control.
Most important is proper watering:
• Water once per week (unless you get a 1/2” rain or more - then do not
water.)
• Water heavily (1” - 2”) for total lawn coverage.
SALUTE TO OUR HEROES GALA
On February 13, 2016, the Cy-Fair Educational Foundation (CFEF) held its 8 th
Annual Salute to Our Heroes Gala at the Omni Hotel Houston Westside raising
over $100,000 to benefit graduating seniors from the Cypress Fairbanks ISD.
Cypress Woods High School AFJROTC was chosen to Present the Colors and
the Missing Man Table and Honors Ceremony. Tina Clinkenbeard, CFISD Teacher,
sang the National Anthem. State Representative Allen Fletcher gave the invocation
and Senior Ryan Lancaster, from Cy-Fair High School, played TAPS.
Kevin “Dauber” Lacz, former Navy SEAL sniper and combat medic was our guest
speaker for the evening. Lacz spoke from the heart about his experiences as a
Navy SEAL and the impact his service in the military had on his life. As a Certified
Physician Assistant, Lacz uses his past experiences to facilitate his work in
medicine and charity and actively seeks to support service members and veterans
in his community. Lacz inspired us all with his motivational story, winning attitude
and continued commitment to service.
Joe Myers Ford Lincoln generously underwrote this year’s Salute to Our Heroes
Gala and we are grateful that they have agreed to underwrite this event in 2017.
Cypress Fairbanks Medical Center Hospital and North Cypress Medical Center
were Major General Sponsors this year. Salute to Our Heroes has raised more
than half a million dollars over the past eight years, funding several endowed
scholarships for students graduating from the Cypress Fairbanks ISD.
CFEF was established in 1970 as a non-profit to raise money to fund a scholarship
for high school graduates in the area. Over the past 46 years, the Foundation
has grown tremendously through the efforts of the Board of Trustees and the
generosity of the Cy-Fair Community. The Foundation has awarded more than $6
million in scholarships to 1,300 graduating seniors. CFEF is a 501(c)3 non-profit
organization, all contributions are tax deductible, as allowed by the law. For more
8 TH ANNUAL CY-FAIR WOMEN’S EXPO
THURSDAY, APRIL 28, 2016, 11 AM-4 PM
The Cy-Fair Express Network (CYFEN) will host the 8 th Annual Cy-Fair
Women’s EXPO at Sterling Country Club at Houston National. We are so
excited to share some of the exciting plans we have for our annual expo.
Besides giving vendors a place to showcase their products and services, the
goal for our expo year is to get the community more involved and show the
Cy-Fair area what ABWA and CYFEN is all about. One of the ways we are
doing this is to have dynamic round table discussions focusing on health and
wellness, communication, relationships and personal finance.
Our Keynote speaker will be ACTION 13 CONSUMER Reporter Patricia
Lopez who focuses on saving you money through her daily “Stretch Your
Dollar” segments on ABC13. You can join Patricia’s presentation at 12 Noon.
Vendor registration is now open. We only take 2 business types per category
and NO two businesses can be exactly the same. We only have 50 vendor
tables available so reserve your spot now! There are also a very limited
number of sponsorship opportunities still available. For more information
about the Expo or about CYFEN, please go to CYFEN.org or email
expovendor@cyfen.org.
