CALIFORNIA DESERT CHORALE ANNOUNCES 

BRUCE MANGUM 

AS PRINCIPAL ACCOMPANIST 

The California Desert Chorale (CDC) is proud to announce the hiring of 

Bruce Mangum as the organization’s new principal accompanist. A seasoned 

professional, Mangum brings with him a wealth of music knowledge 

and expertise to CDC as it prepares for it’s 24th season. 

“The California Desert Chorale is delighted to welcome Bruce Mangum 

to our organization as the Principal Accompanist for the upcoming 2016- 

2017 season. Bruce is a pianist with extensive performance experience, 

great technical skill and broad stylistic flexibility, who brings his own very 

special brand of musical artistry to our collaboration. California Desert 

Chorale looks forward to producing and performing many more wonderful 

choral concerts and vocal recitals fueled by Bruce’s superb skill and positive, 

effusive spirit,” said Tim Bruneau, Artistic Director, CDC. 

Bruce Mangum grew up in a musical family in a small town in Idaho 

called Nampa. In 1992, he earned a Bachelor’s degree in Applied Piano 

from the College of Idaho in Caldwell, ID. The following year, he completed 

one year toward a Master’s in Piano Performance from the University 

of Idaho in Moscow, ID. 

Bruce has played piano since age 7 and instructors include: the late Dr. 

Fern Nolte Davidson, Dr. Jay Mauchley, Jeffrey Payne, Carol Rich, the 

late Nicolas Laurienti (founder of the Denver Opera Company) and most 

recently Tim Bruneau, Artistic Director of the California Desert Chorale. 

Bruce lived in Portland, OR for 7 years where he accompanied local 

music and opera students while serving as Musical Director for a wide 

spectrum of community theatre productions. He won “Musical Director of 

the Year” for his work in “Irene” in 1997. 

From 1999 to 2002, Bruce was brought on board with Princess Cruise 

Lines as Atrium Pianist traveling extensively worldwide while entertaining 

guests. It was out on the high seas where he developed and perfected 

his romantic piano playing in the style of John Tesh -- with a little George 

Winston thrown in. In his leisure time, Bruce enjoys listening to a wide 

variety of music from opera to pop to light jazz, including such artists as: 

Eva Cassidy, Amy Grant, Judy Collins, Anonymous 4, Il Divo, the Manhattan 

Transfer, k.d. lang, Keiko Matsui, Zero 7 and even Lady Gaga! 

He moved to Palm Springs in 2005 from Denver, CO with his husband 

Dan Hodges. He served 9 years as the Music Director for Shepherd of 

the Valley United Methodist Church in Indio, and was Principal Accompanist 

for the [then] Caballeros: the Gay Men’s Chorus of Palm Springs for 7 

seasons. He is currently the Artistic Director for Modern Men - Coachella 

Valley Men’s Chorus; is a founding member of the Lyric Chamber Ensemble; 

and from 2006 to 2010, played piano for the Palm Springs Opera 

Guild’s Outreach Program every June. Most recently, from November 

2014 to July 2016, Bruce led music for the University Methodist Church in 

Redlands, CA and now is thrilled to start his inaugural season as Principal 

Accompanist for the California Desert Chorale! 

Bruce’s performances in the Coachella Valley have included venues such 

as the IPAC in Indio, the Annenberg in Palm Springs and both the Joslyn 

and McCallum Theatres in Palm Desert and throughout the Palm Springs 

Unified School District. In October 2010, Bruce released a CD called 

“Hidden in Plain View” of original songs and religious piano arrangements 

and this recording is available on iTunes and Amazon.com.

11 at 3:00p.m, December 14 at 7:00p.m. as well as December 18

will be March 18, 2017 at 7:00p.m. and March 19, 2017 at 3:00p.m. Both 

the holiday and spring concerts will be performed at the Indian Wells Theater 

at the CSUSB Campus in Palm Desert.

enjoyed the night’s shenanigans hanging with some of Palm 

Springs’ most famous.

The first thought that goes 

through your head when 

you meet this extravagant, 

energetic force of nature is that 

she is a total diva. Five minutes 

later, and especially after a few 

Sean Borg cocktails, you’re best friends, 

talking about love, life, family, pets, movies and 

passions. You might even be planning a trip 

together. That’s how we met too. A bit later 

I heard she was writing a book on the art of 

staying in love together. Intrigued, I suggested a 

lunch date. 

AN: Something like that. Only it’s natural for me as my mom was a successful 

Russian TV producer, and my dad was a well-known nonfiction writer. I pretty 

much grew up on set, and in a literary milieu. I wish they could see me now. 

They would be very proud of me. I’ve lost them one after another just recently. 

SB: I know your mom just passed away last year. 

AN: Our Palm Springs community is the best. I’ve had such huge support and 

love from people here. It really helped. I want to give a special shout out to 

Power Yoga PS for taking me under their wing, and giving me endless hugs. 

AN: In my new book let’s NOT split up I wrote a chapter on how loss can affect 

a relationship, and how to help your partner deal with it. Next year I’m planning 

to publish “A Year of Pouring Rain”, a support guide for people surviving the 

first, and most difficult, year of grieving. And don’t be fooled, we often grieve 

just as much for our beloved departed pets. 

We first met at the new Eight4Nine restaurant, and then a 

second time at TRIO – Anna’s favorite dinner spot. Now we are 

sitting in her living room, which perfectly reflects her “there 

are no rules policy”. Antiques from around the world are mixed 

with modern pieces, including several from the very talented 

and happening local artist, Elena Bulatova. Flower bouquets 

decorate the room. Toys here and there suggest the presence of 

children. 

SB: Speaking of your book, it’s so different from everything you’ve done so

Anna Nikita describes herself as a mother, a wife, an author, 

and last but not least, a happiness ambassador. Six kids, three 

successful YouTube channels, an intense volunteering schedule 

focused on bringing art into children’s lives, a new book, and 

two more on the way. 

SB: Anna, you and I first met at the Red Party. We seem to 

mingle through the same Palm Springs parties, and everybody 

says the same thing about you: extravagant, fun, and yet 

motherly, in a good sort of way. So how do you keep it together, 

especially with the large family? 

AN: (She erupts in that infectious laughter) Oh, lots of fabulous 

parties and champagne, darling! Seriously though, my husband 

and I are a team and best friends. It makes everything easier. 

Prioritizing is supremely important. Sure, we try to do 

everything right for our children, but it’s inevitable that one day 

they will grow up and start to have a life of their own. You don’t 

want to sacrifice your bond in the process and end up being 

strangers. Staying a couple and in love is crucial. It takes daily, 

small steps to keep a relationship healthy. For us, it’s the time 

we have to talk and share during our daily routine of coffee and 

a walk together. Every day. We also try to hug and hold hands a 

lot. Staying physical is critical. 

SB: Speaking of children, you strike me more of a helicopter 

parent than you want to admit, though. I’ve heard a rumor that 

you’re going to be bicoastal because two of your kids are going 

to universities on the East Coast. Is it true? 

AN: Well, I’m just not ready to let go yet. Palm Springs is where 

I feel at home, where my friends live, and my heart is. New York 

is where I feel comfortable. It’s very similar to Moscow, where I 

grew up. I think it’ll be challenging and fun. 

SB: Do you ever have time for yourself? How do you relax? 

AN: Besides reading, I love to play my saxophone and dance 

ballet. I’m not great at either, but that’s the most wonderful 

thing about America, a country I love so much - you can do 

things just for fun and nobody will judge you. 

SB: You have several YouTube channels with millions of views 

and a legion of young viewers half a world away, and now a 

book. How did it all come about? Did you wake up one day and 

say: I’m going to make videos and write books?

AN: I’ve had so many dear friends who in recent years divorced 

or split up. It is an epidemic, and it’s simply devastating for 

them, for their families and their friends. It’s like death, really – 

the death of a couple.

My husband and I have been together for a very long time. We’ve 

managed to keep it together for each other, our kids, and also for 

those who we love and care for. It’s not always easy. This book is 

based on our personal experiences, as well as wisdom shared by 

our friends, many of whom live in Palm Springs, actually. 

SB: I’ve read your book, and I loved it. It’s to the point, which I 

personally appreciated. And it’s for anyone in a relationship, not just 

for straight couples with kids. And, plug, plug, it’s available on Amazon. 

AN: A relationship is a relationship. A commitment is a 

commitment. Love is love. The rules don’t change. Every couple 

that works on staying together and improving their love, and 

if married, honoring that “till death do you part” promise, 

deserves our respect and our support.

SB: What are you working on now? 

AN: I’m doing a lot of interviews with parents and kids about 

raising a teenager and being one. I feel that if parents can better 

understand their teens, their needs, fears, and sexuality, there 

will be less frustrated and angry people in this world. 

SB: Do you think your involvement with YouTube was helpful 

with your writing career now? 

AN: Absolutely. Every experience in life can be helpful for the 

future, if applied correctly. I’ve produced, and written scripts 

for nearly a thousand episodes in a span of four years. That was 

excellent practice for what I do now. 

For instance, I use videos extensively on my website, www. 

annanikitamedia.com to provide an enhanced inspirational 

experience for my readers. It’s pretty involved to regularly 

create new video material, but it helps me to stay connected 

with my audience in today’s new-media driven world. 

SB: Tell us about your involvement with the Meet the Masters 

elementary school program. 

AN: I’ve been participating in teaching art to children as a 

volunteer for more than ten years in L.A. These last two years in 

Palm Springs were by far the most challenging and rewarding. 

Being the sole art instructor in 3 classes of our elementary 

school was time intensive, but produced a very special and 

personal bond with more than 90 wonderful students. Watching 

these young kids express themselves through art has been truly 

wonderful. For many it was simply something fun to do. Those 

trapped in a difficult domestic life, art often became an escape. 

For others, it was a revelation of their imagination and their 

blossoming talent. I applaud the Palm Springs Unified School 

District for creating this wonderful program. We need more 

programs like this, and we need to reach out to parents and get 

them more involved. Exposing young minds to some of the best 

creativity and beauty that humans have to offer is absolutely 

critical for maintaining a healthy and inclusive society. 

SB: Can’t agree more. So finally, you and I are Facebook 

buddies. All pictures you post are fun and happy. Are you really 

always in a good mood and happy? 

AN: Happiness is a choice. Of course one can’t be happy 24/7, 

but one can try. There’s a lot of negativity and ignorant, horrible 

people in this world. It’s up to you to choose to see beauty, 

happiness, kindness, and goodwill. My best friend Sven is my 

inspiration. He always says: “ I simply refuse to be unhappy!” 

It’s also important to do what you love, and hang out with 

people you admire, respect, and who make you laugh. I am 

living the happiest time of my life now, and I realize it. I also 

learn from my kids to be in the moment. It’s like being on a 

swing. Just enjoy. No worries!

CONGRATS BRYAN TURNER! 

I-10 Toyota and March to Equality have a winner! 

In a recent local contest, I-10 Toyota in Indio partnered with March 

To Equality to offer the chance to win a free months rental on a Toyota 

Prius. The contest lasted until May 31, 2016, MTE and I-10 Toyota threw 

a party July 5th to celebrate the winner, Bryan Turner of Palm Desert. 

March To Equality is the most expansive virtual march in history 

supporting full LGBT equality. The vision of the organizers is to collect 

50M “steps” through the MarchToEquality.org platform, so that by June 

28, 2019 the entire globe will be virtually circumnavigated. This date 

is special as it marks the 50th anniversary of the Stonewall Riots and 

reflects an important milestone in the LGBT movement. 

I-10 Toyota staff and participants in the initiative have together added 

more than 68,000 steps to the campaign. Founder of MTE, Stephan 

Anspichler, underlined the importance of this local partnership for the 

campaign: “I-10 Toyota was from the very beginning a strong supporter 

of the campaign. Staff members have added ten thousands of steps 

in support of full LGBT equality, which is a great sign for diversity and 

inclusion in the work place and also a strong message for all potential 

LGBT car buyers in the Coachella Valley.” He continues: “Corporations 

have become a key ally in the LGBT movement,” he says, “and March To 

Equality will continue to spotlight businesses that carry out a message of 

diversity and inclusion.”
