Power tools in a variety of sizes seem to 

have made light work of raking leaves. 

Getting the yard cleaned up was on our 

radar last weekend. I figured Saturday morning 

would be a great 

time for us to all pitch in 

and hopefully be done 

by noon. 

When I got home 

from work Friday night 

I discovered that our 

son had gotten the leaf 

blower out when he got 

home from school. In 

just over two hours he 

had nearly the entire 

lawn and all of the rock 

landscaping beds blown

clean and a huge pile of leaves waiting by the 

street. 

While I was delighted by the task being 

nearly completed, I wasn’t quite sure how we 

were going to get rid of the leaves before the 

wind picked up and dispersed them all over 

the neighborhood. Fortunately, I remembered 

seeing an ad for a lawn service that operates a 

big leaf vacuum in the fall. 

One phone call was all it took, and in less 

than an hour three guys and a trailer-size leaf 

vacuum had pulled up in front of our house 

and made quick work of the daunting pile. 

In visiting with the guys, my husband 

learned they had been vacuuming leaves all afternoon 

and still not had to empty their trailer. 

Whatever kind of mulching device is in that 

machine does an amazing job. 

Sure, a few more leaves have fallen from 

our birch tree, or blown in from the neighborhood, 

but the bulk of the work is done. 

Granted, I didn’t get much exercise out of 

the cleanup project, but I also didn’t get any 

blisters, and I’m good with that.

The holidays are a time to 

celebrate friends and family. 

A group of people in 

Sioux Center are celebrating 

being alive and are doing what 

they can to help others. 

The Sioux Center Tour of 

Homes will once again be held 

this year on Nov. 18-19 as a 

fundraiser for the American 

Cancer Society. The tour will 

take place on Friday, Nov. 18, 

in the evening from 4-8:30 

p.m. Saturday’s event will run 

from 9 a.m.-3 p.m. 

This will be the 14th Tour 

of Homes and the organizers 

can’t wait for this year’s event. 

“We were doing it every year 

but we decided to do it every 

other year for now. We didn’t 

do it last year. But I have to say, 

if we could get five houses for 

next year then we would probably 

hold it again,” said Loreen 

Marra, one of the event’s 

organizers. “The tour goes to 

benefit our Relay For Life team, 

which raises money for the 

American Cancer Society.” 

This year’s event will feature 

six homes and then a stop at 

Petals & Perks for their Teas 

and Trees open house. 

The homes being featured on 

this year’s tour include:

Holiday Kickoff 

Estherville starts celebrating the Christmas season Nov. 17 

Christmas might be weeks away 

but Estherville is getting ready 

for the holiday season a little 

early this year. 

Once again this year, Estherville 

will play host to its annual Parade 

of Lights and Chocolate Walk. On 

Thursday, Nov. 17, parents, children 

and kids at heart, no matter their age, 

will have something fun to enjoy. 

From 4-7 p.m. downtown businesses 

will open their doors and offer 

sweet treats and great deals. 

“We like to do this event on Thursday 

night because that is our late night 

shopping night where we encourage 

people to come downtown and start 

their holiday shopping. Stores will 

have deals and specials and all will 

have special treats for the holiday 

season,” said Lexie Ruter, executive 

director of the Estherville Chamber of

While shopping might not be high 

on the list of fun things for the kiddos 

to do, there is an event that is sure to 

bring delight to their faces. 

The Parade of Lights starts at 7 p.m. 

and it will feature about 30 different 

parade floats cruising through downtown 

Estherville. 

“The floats are all lit up and put 

together by different businesses and 

organizations. Iowa Lakes Electric always 

does a huge float that’s all lit up. 

They are always featured at the end of 

the parade because their’s is always 

so great,” Ruter said. “Every year we 

have a different theme, so most of the 

groups create something new every 

year.” 

This year’s theme is favorite holiday 

activities. 

Last year, the theme was favorite 

holiday movies and there were lots of 

Grinch and Elf floats. Iowa Lakes Electric 

did a holiday Smurf float and they 

had a giant illuminated mushroom, 

all of the people on the float were 

painted blue to hand out candy. 

“It’s really a fun afternoon and 

night for the whole family. The Chocolate 

Walk is geared toward Mom and 

Dad and the parade of lights is geared 

toward the whole family,” Ruter said. 

To officially kick off the Christmas 

season there is a very special guest at 

the parade. 

Santa is the last float in the parade 

and leads the crowd and kids to Library 

Square to light up the big trees. 

“The kids really enjoy it and it’s fun 

to see it when they all go to Library 

Square. It’s special when they light up 

the square,” Ruter said. 

The event is free to all and is set to 

proceed no matter the weather conditions. 

“We’ve done it all kinds of weather 

— in snow, in cold, but it looks like 

it’s going to be a decent day with 

some nice weather for a change,”

Kiwanis is helping out in both regards 

with one event. 

The 16th Annual Poinsettia Sale 

and Vendor Fair will once again be 

sponsored by the Hull Kiwanis and 

hosted at the Natural Beauty Growers 

greenhouses between Hull and Boyden. 

The event will be held Thursday, 

Nov. 17, from 2-8 p.m. with free 

tours, about 30 craft and food vendors, 

as well as photo ops amongs the 

seven acres of poinsettias. 

“It’s a really cool sight to see and 

smell all the flowers, a lot of people 

come take pictures and we’ll have a 

spot set up for that,” said Randy Feenstra, 

Hull Kiwanis member and event 

coordinator. “You’ve got seven acres of 

them in all kinds of colors. It’s really 

neat to see them before they head out 

the door.” 

Feenstra was thankful for the graciousness 

of the greenhouse to allow 

the Kiwanis Club to host the event. A 

similar event held by a Natural Beauty 

Growers greenhouse near Chicago 

lasts three days and sells about 3,000 

poinsettias. 

The Hull Kiwanis event sells about 

1,000 during their one evening with 

the proceeds benefitting children’s 

programs, parks and recreation programs 

and libraries. 

Visitors to the event can purchase 

poinsettias at wholesale costs in addition 

to the wide range of wares being 

sold at the vendor booths. 

“You can get poinsettias for $4 or 

$40 depending on how big you go, 

and there are poinsettias of every 

color,” Feenstra said. “A lot of businesses 

and churches get them during 

the event.” 

Pinks, purples. yellows, speckled 

patterns and, of course, the ever-popular 

traditional red will be available. 

The Hull Kiwanis will have several 

members on hand to help customers 

carry out their poinsettias and other 

purchases. 

“It’s really a lot of fun with all the 

vendors. There are all kinds of crafts 

and homemade items for sale, you 

name it, they’ll have it.” Feenstra said. 

“A lot of people bring their entire 

families along. It’s become quite a farreaching 

event with people coming 

from Sioux City, Sioux Falls, Vermillion, 

and even the Twin Cities.” 

As it’s hosted inside a greenhouse, 

the event is almost weatherproof as 

well. The temperatures could be single 

digits outside, but the weather inside 

remains of the balmy variety. 

Fun, flowers and a kickstart to the 

Christmas shopping season. Do it all 

at the Hull Kiwanis Poinsettia Sale 

and Vendor Fair while supporting a 

great cause at the same time. F

volunteered to lead excursions beyond

see the variety of birds that are seen at 

different times of the year in Dickinson 

County’s varying habitats. 

“Lots of people have some level of 

interest in birds, and I enjoy cultivating 

those interests,” he said. “For 

many people, seeing birds in the field 

is a new and exciting adventure.” 

Schoenewe’s own passion for birding 

began almost 40 years ago. 

“I blame my wife, Nancy,” he said. 

“She started feeding birds in the backyard 

and got me to go to a meeting

program will be held Saturday, Nov.

Off, Off Broadway tells classic 

true tale of friendship 

Off, Off Broadway is bringing 

a classic country singer to the 

stage in the musical “Always... 

Patsy Cline.” 

The theater troupe will bring the 

show to the Ashton Community Center 

for four nights of dinner theatre. 

From Thursday-Saturday, Nov. 17- 

20, guests can grab dinner catered by 

1015 Steak Company before taking 

in the show. Entree options include 

prime rib, chicken cordon bleu or 

breaded swai. Dinner is served at 5:30 

p.m. and the show starts at 8 p.m. 

The idea for the show was brought 

up during the Off, Off Broadway 

board meeting over the summer. 

“We were throwing around ideas for 

our November show and this one was 

brought up,” board member and producer 

Brad Vander Pol said. “We had 

talked about it a few years ago as well. 

It’s been awhile since we’ve done a 

musical so it’s a nice change of pace.” 

The musical follows the friendship 

of Patsy Cline and Louise Seger. 

Their relationship began as one 

between a singer and her fan and 

evolved into one of mutual respect. 

Much of the plot of the show is 

centered around the letters they wrote 

back and forth up until Cline’s untimely 

death in a plane crash in 1963. 

Lissa Lane Johnson is directing the 

musical as well as playing the role of 

Louis Seger while Tricia Meendering 

takes on the role of Patsy Cline. 

They will be backed by a five-piece 

band as they take the audience on a 

journey that includes many of Cline’s 

timeless songs. 

“The story and premise is really a 

heartwarming deal and true story,” 

Vander Pol said. 

“We had the two cast members in 

mind right away. Tricia’s a great singer 

and Lissa brings so much theater experience.” 

Meendering first saw the play 20 

years ago in Nashville, the city where 

many classic country hits originate. 

“It just gave me goosebumps,” 

Meendering said. “And it gives me 

goosebumps still now when we’re in 

rehearsals. Cline passed away before 

I was born but the music has always 

been part of my life growing up. She 

was classy, cool and it’s such a great 

story.” 

It’s a story the audience can hear on 

any one of four nights this November 

in Ashton. It’s one Meendering has 

enjoyed rehearsing and believes the 

audience will enjoy as well. 

“It’s a small group but a big story. 

We’ve been loving every minute of 

it,” Meendering said, “I hope the 

audience is able to enjoy this story 

of friendship and admire the great 

classic songs. For such a short time 

in the spotlight she sure had lots of 

great music that will rekindle people’s 

memories.”

A story told 

through MUSIC 

Northwest Iowa Symphony Orchestra concert on Nov. 15 

Music surrounds us and some 

of that music has a story to 

tell. 

That is what the Northwest Iowa 

Symphony Orchestra’s first concert of 

the 2016-2017 season at the BJ Haan 

Auditorium at Dordt College on Tuesday, 

Nov. 15, at 7:30 p.m., is all about. 

The title of this concert is “Here’s 

the Story.” 

The concert will feature “The 

Moldau” by Smetana, “In Good King 

Charles’s Golden Days” by Linda Robbins 

Coleman (an Iowa composer), 

“Fantastic Brillante on Themes from 

‘Carmen’” by Borne featuring John 

Bailey on the flute, and “Grand Canyon 

Suite” by Grofe. 

And, according to principal conductor 

Christopher Stanichar, each of 

these pieces has a story to tell. 

“Orchestra music is broken down 

into two categories: concert music or 

absolute music. It’s more abstract and 

it’s music for music’s sake,” Stanichar 

explained. 

“Like a Brahms’ or Beethoven 

symphony. They don’t have a story 

attached to it.” 

On the other hand, programmatic 

music comes with a story. 

“Programmatic music is like a lot of 

music. Sometimes it’s associated with 

a movie, play or ballet. Sometimes 

there is some kind of story to it like a 

theme, or the music tells the story of 

an event or a place,” Stanichar said. 

“For example, we’ll be playing the 

‘Grand Canyon Suite,’ which is very 

descriptive of the canyon at different 

times of day, during a storm, at 

sunrise and sunset. You get immersed 

into that place by the music. It’s just 

like you are really there in the Grand 

Canyon.” 

This year, the Northwest Iowa 

Symphony Orchestra is composed of 

around 90 members and they have 

been practicing for this concert for 

weeks. 

“I always like to push the orchestra 

to play harder music and sometimes 

that can be frustrating for the less 

advanced players, but is fun for the 

professionals,” Stanichar said. “This 

is the most prepared they’ve sounded 

for a concert in a few years.” 

The Northwest Iowa Symphony 

Orchestra features musicians in their 

adult years as well as some gifted 

musical students in middle school 

through college. Some of those students 

receive scholarships from the 

Friends of NISO for continuing music 

lessons. 

Multiple concerts are given every 

season, and the November concert is 

always the Concert for the Children 

where selections from the concert are 

played throughout the day for young 

students. 

“We have around 1,100 kids coming 

during the day and we play parts of 

the concert for them. We explain the 

music to the kids in the audience,” 

Stanichar said. 

“We always host this day because we 

want to encourage involvement with 

the future of the orchestra, which is 

these kids.” F
