The holidays are almost here

Hartley’s Chamber of Commerce
is sponsoring a local
shopping event to help everyone
(businesses and shoppers included)
jumpstart their holiday
shopping.
Local vendors who sell out of
their homes as well as other local
businesses will be included
in the Holiday Shop Hop.

Birdwatchers Anonymous

group documented several exciting
species.
Dickinson County Conservation’s
birding offerings have expanded this
year as local birder Lee Schoenewe
volunteered to lead excursions beyond
the normal summer Birding on the
Green programs. He wanted people to
see the variety of birds that are seen at
different times of the year in Dickinson
County’s varying habitats.
“Lots of people have some level of
interest in birds, and I enjoy cultivating
those interests,” he said. “For
many people, seeing birds in the field
is a new and exciting adventure.”
Schoenewe’s own passion for birding
began almost 40 years ago.
“I blame my wife, Nancy,” he said.
“She started feeding birds in the backyard
and got me to go to a meeting

He wants to allow others the opportunity
to participate in fun excursions,
whether experienced birders or those
who are looking to learn about identifying
avian species by sight and sound.
Even youth are encouraged to attend
Birdwatchers Anonymous programs,
accompanied by an adult.
“Anyone with an interest in birds
is welcome,” Schoenewe said. “We try
not to move too fast or go too far. Having
everyone see and enjoy the birds
we encounter is the No. 1 goal.”
The next Birdwatchers Anonymous
program will be held Saturday, Nov.
19. Meet at 9 a.m. at the Dickinson
County Nature Center and caravan
with Schoenewe throughout the
county to see what species are in the
area at that time.
