TRASH PICK-UP DAYS
Wednesdays and Saturdays are the Lone Oak scheduled trash pickup
days. Please do not set your garbage out early. We continue to
see many residents put trash out 2-3 days before trash day. Please
keep your garbage out of sight until the night before or the day of
the scheduled pick up. Also, please be courteous and do not block
the sidewalks with your bags and or trash bins and remove them in a
timely manner after pick up.
HIT THE BRAKES…
Speeding in Lone Oak has been a hot topic of discussion lately. There have
been numerous reports of speeding and of running stop signs. We have
notified the Sheriff of these reports and have asked that tickets be issued
to offenders. Several surrounding schools and residents have purchased
kid alert safety signs to be placed in front of their homes and or buildings
to remind people to slow down. If you would like to purchase a safety
sign, here are a couple websites that sell the signs, www.kaplantoys.com
and www.discountschoolsupply.com
LONE OAK CRIME WATCH
NEEDS YOUR HELP
Lone Oak’s Crime Watch
Chairperson would like to
encourage more residents to
become involved in the Lone
Oak Crime Watch Program. More
Block Captains are needed! Each
Block Captain is responsible
for contacting the residents who are assigned to them when there
is information to pass along regarding incidents in Lone Oak or
surrounding areas. Most Block Captains set up their distribution list via
email, so it is important for residents to know who their Block Captain is.
The time required is minimal - attend a few periodic meetings, distribute
information, be aware of happenings in your neighborhood and host a
National Night Out Party once a year! If you would like to volunteer or
would just like more information, please contact your Board.
ADVENT LESSONS & CAROLS
The SEAS Schola Musicorum presented Advent Lessons & Carols on
December 6 th led by Music Director, Dr. O’Neill, accompanied by Assistant
Directors Dr. Yoon, Mrs. Cooper and organist Kirk M. Rich. Nine readings
from Scripture which recount the Fall, the promise of a Messiah and the
joyful announcement to Mary were each read in different languages by
the students, including French, Thai, Vietnamese, Greek and English.
Each reading was followed by a choral piece or congregational hymn that
reflects on the reading’s message. The music and texts for Advent are rich
and beautiful, while preparing these pieces, the students have learned
more about how their faith can be expressed through poetry and music.
The audience witnessed the excellent work the students have been doing
and participated in a profound service that will help prepare our hearts
and minds for the coming of our Savior.
CYPRESS CHRISTIAN SCHOOL NEWS
SMALL AMOUNT OF WORK CAN HELP A LOT OF PEOPLE
Cypress Christian School students often serve at the Houston
Food Bank and recently eighth graders worked hard to help
those in need. Together they loaded 20 pallets (5’ x 8’) with
food for children in our city. The sponsors and the students
are thankful for their time at the food bank. Eighth-grade
teacher Karen McGrath really enjoys this service project,
which gives her another opportunity to work alongside her
energetic and caring students and another opportunity to
experience the joy of giving to others. Eighth-grader Riann
Waterson said the experience was “awesome because it
helped us to see that even a small amount of work can help
a lot of people.”
TD CLUB NAMES CCS PLAYER AND COACH 2016 FINALISTS
At the end of every football season, the Touchdown Club of Houston honors the best in
private school football and CCS has two finalists: senior Matthew Kooiman for lineman
of the year and Coach Spenn for coach of the year. Kooiman ended the season as a first
team all-district player on both sides of the ball and was named to the TAPPS DIII All-State
first team on the offensive line and second team on the defensive line. He is capping off a
four-year career as a starter. Coach Spenn is being honored after the Warriors completed
a 10-2 season and advanced to the second round of the state playoffs. This was Coach
Spenn’s ninth season as the head coach and he has a career record of 59-41 with three
district titles and seven playoff appearances. As a Division III football team, the Warriors
have never finished worse than second place in the district and made the playoffs in
all seven years. For more info about Warrior football: Athletics.CypressChristian.org/
ONE-ACT PLAY PARTICIPANTS EARN FOURTH IN STATE
FOR CCS
The production of “The Diary of Anne Frank” garnered
Cypress Christian high school drama students fourth
place at the TAPPS Division II State One-Act Play contest.
In addition, several individual honors were awarded. The
drama team was honored to represent CCS and tell this
most important story. Drama Director Blythe Kirkwood says:
“This was such an amazing trip and a really special way to
end the seniors’ one-act play career at CCS. Out of the 11
seniors in this production, six have competed in the contest
for the last four years. What a journey it has been to see all
of my students grow, learn and hone their skills and talents.
Each student is a blessing to me, to this school and to the
art of theatre. We are honored to bring these awards home
and we were all truly changed by telling this heartbreaking
story.” Congratulations to the cast and crew: Director: Blythe
Kirkwood Cast: Parker Buckley, Adam Carr, Davis Carver,
FOSTER CHILDREN: PREPARATION
FOR ADULT LIVING (PAL)
When foster children reach age 18, they are considered independent.
That’s difficult for kids who have been wards of the state, with necessities
arranged by caseworkers with state funds. Now they’ll have to figure out
how to organize themselves and make their money last a whole month.
Fortunately, Child protective Services offers them a program to help
prepare for independence: Preparation for Adult Living (PAL). The year-long
course culminates in an all-day workshop hosted by the National Council
for Jewish Women (NCJW). The course is held at Junior Achievement’s
BizTown, using computer kiosks sponsored by local businesses. Want to
help with PAL or other NCJW programs that help change lives with handson
community service? Contact info@ncjwhouston.org or see www.
DREAM DACHSHUND RESCUE
DREAM Dachshund Rescue, Education & Adoption Mission is a Houstonbased
501(c)(3) nonprofit organization dedicated to rescuing abandoned
Dachshunds and finding new homes for Dachshunds whose owners can
no longer care for them. Our committed volunteers, working closely with
local veterinarians, provide our Dachshunds with quality medical care
and loving foster homes until they are adopted into carefully screened,
forever homes.
32 January 2017 | Lone Oak

DREAM is currently looking for caring volunteers to provide temporary
foster care for our many rescued Dachshunds-in-need, currently awaiting
adoption. Prior to their adoption, DREAM continues to pay for all
medical care and monthly heart worm prevention. There is no long-term
commitment required. Food, water, shelter and a soft place to rest is all
you need to provide. The “love” just comes naturally.
If you have a little room in your heart and in your home (and your family pets are
up-to-date on their vaccines and monthly heart worm preventative), then you
are who we are looking for! There is no feeling in the world like the unconditional
love you’ll receive from a rescued Dachshund, plus the friendships you’ll make
when you join the DREAM Team! The more foster homes we have, the more
Dachshunds we can save. Please help save a life and consider fostering today!
Questions? Please send us an email to: Contact-Us@DreamDachs.org and a
volunteer will respond to you right away with all the information you need!
Ready to Foster? Please visit our website at: www.dreamdachs.org and
click on the FOSTER tab to fill out our online Foster Application.
LITERACY ADVANCE OF HOUSTON
IS LOOKING FOR VOLUNTEERS
Your way to transform a life in need… Teach someone to read! Just a few
hours a week can make all the difference for someone in your community!
Literacy Advance is Houston’s largest and oldest 100% volunteersupported
literacy organization - and we need your help! We’re calling
all passionate volunteers to help adults learn to read, write and speak
English. All classes are free because they are taught by caring people just
like you willing to volunteer a few hours a week. We’d love to match you
with a person in need. Ola read her first book at age 49, thanks to a tutor
just like you. Prior teaching experience is welcome but not necessary.
Training and ongoing support is provided and we have locations across
the city. Other volunteer opportunities are available as well, to find
out more please contact Maxine Stefano, Volunteer Manager, at tutor@
literacyadvance.org or at 713-266-8777 ext.16.
START THE NEW YEAR WITH A NEW
BEST FRIEND AND FAMILY MEMBER!
Loving Arms Pet Placement has an assortment of wonderful dogs and cats
hoping for their forever homes. We have all different types of small to large
dogs, mixed breeds and many wonderful cats to choose from. We are a
foster-based rescue for dogs and cats. If you are not ready to commit to
adopting a dog or cat permanently, the animals also need foster families.
Besides providing food, water and a safe place to sleep, foster families
socialize the animals so they are people friendly. Include the animal in
your daily home life inside your home. Get to know them as individuals so
you can share personality traits, likes/dislikes, anecdotes. Treat the animal
like your own and train him/her, if possible. Although you may feel sadness
when your foster animal is adopted, please know that your efforts helped
to prepare the cat or dog for his/her forever home. Visit Loving Arms Pet
Placement website at www.lovingarmspetplacement.com or visit us at
Petsmart on Highway 6 and FM 529 each Saturday from 11 AM until 5 PM.
