PLEASE PICK UP AFTER YOUR PET
It doesn’t take much to remember that we have pets in our community. In
fact, if you don’t watch your step, you’re liable to step in one such reminder!
Besides being unsightly and smelly, animal waste can be hazardous to the
health of our children who play in the community and other pets. One of
the most common forms of disease transmission between dogs is through
fecal matter. When walking your dog in our community, remember that
it should be leashed. Also, it is important to remember to immediately
clean up after your pet. Take along a baggie with you to pick up waste
with and then dispose of it properly. By taking a few simple steps to clean
up after your pet, you can contribute not only to the beautification of our
community, but also towards the elimination of one of the most irritating.
COPPER LAKES BAGGED CLIPPINGS AND YARD WASTE
It has come to the attention of the HOA that many residents/homeowners
place bagged yard clippings on the curb prior to the appropriate time
when such items can be placed there for trash pick. As pointed out in
Section 6.6 of the Deed Restrictions:
“...container may he placed in a designated area for garbage or trash
pickup no earlier than six o’clock p.m. on the day preceding trash pickup
of such garbage...”
If you cut your own grass and bag the clippings please leave them at the
curb in accordance with the day and time of the deed restrictions.
If you have a service cut your lawn and they bag your clippings, please
consider asking them to mulch the clippings instead of bagging. If they
do bag, please do not leave the bag at the curb unless it is in compliance
with Section 6.6 of the Deed Restrictions.
Most experts agree that it is better to leave the clippings on your lawn
as they return nutrients and it is much easier than bagging. By mulching
your grass clippings you are also saving time for you and the trash pick
contractors as well as preserving landfill space.
The Full Text of Section 6.6 is below:
SECTION 6.6. RESTRICTIONS ON GARBAGE AND TRASH - No refuse,
garbage, trash, lumber, grass, shrub or tree clippings, plant waste,
compost, metal, hulk materials, scrap, refuse or debris of any kind shall
be kept, stored or allowed to accumulate on any Lot except within an
enclosed container of a type, size and style approved by the Board and
appropriately screened from view, except that any such container may he
placed in a designated area for garbage or trash pickup no earlier than six
o’clock p.m. on the day preceding trash pickup of such garbage and trash
and shall he returned to an enclosed structure or an area appropriately
screened from view no later than midnight of the day of pickup of such
garbage and trash.
COPPER LAKES TENNIS COURTS
Many residents are already enjoying the refurbished tennis courts. This
summer, we replaced the chain link fence and resurfaced the courts.
New nets were purchased and the light posts were painted. We also plan
to install new benches. If you have not yet seen or enjoyed them, check
them out.
Remember, the courts are for Copper Lakes residents and guests. They
must be relinquished for scheduled league matches of Copper Lakes
teams. To preserve them for everyone, it is important that the courts be
used for tennis only. They are not for soccer, skateboards, skates, etc.
Access is with the same card you use for the pools.
SECURITY REPORT - COPPER LAKES
To keep everyone in Copper Lakes better informed about the kinds
of incidences occurring on your street or near your homes, we are
recommending our Copper Lakes neighbors take advantage of the
following resources:
www.crimereports.com - Zoom-in to Copper Lakes to see what is
happening in our neighborhood. The incidences are recorded by the
HCSO. To get the most out of the site, it’s a good idea to register - after
which you will be able to open the website starting in Copper Lakes and
have access to historical data as well. Take some time to familiarize
yourself with all of the features on the website. It’s a valuable asset.
www.iwatchharriscounty.com - Download this smart phone app and
start reporting incidences directly to the HCSO without having to wait in
line on the HCSO non-emergency hot line 713-221-6000.
713-221-6000 - This is the non-emergency HCSO phone number for
reporting suspicious activity. Please report everything every time you
see it. This will give the HCSO statistical trends for Copper Lakes, so they
can adjust their patrol accordingly.
911 - Use this number anytime you feel threatened or in danger or you
think someone else might be in danger.
copperlakes.nextdoor.com - This free website is for Copper Lakes residents
to stay informed about incidences occurring in our neighborhood - as
well as the neighborhoods adjacent to Copper Lakes.
www.facebook.com/groups/231835823536719 - This Copper Lakes
Facebook page is another informative place to stay in contact with your
neighbors and discuss issues relevant to Copper Lakes.
Please make a note of all house addresses around your home - even the
ones behind your backyard. And create a map of these addresses. This is
very important because if you ever need to call 911, the Dispatcher must
have a real street address for the incident.
HARRIS COUNTY ALARM DETAIL
In order to increase compliance and spread awareness, our office is
requesting your assistance in informing residents in your community
through your HOA newsletter or your scheduled HOA meetings of the need
to obtain a permit for operating an alarm system, residential or business,
within unincorporated Harris County. Many residents and businesses are
unaware of the requirement to obtain an alarm permit once an alarm
system has been installed and activated by the alarm company. Alarm
systems are established and defined in the Local Government Code 233
(subchapter D), as well as the authority to regulate, adopt rules and
impose penalties for unpermitted locations. Obtaining the required
permit will avoid the issuance of a citation and excessive false alarm fees.
The fee for current permit issuance is $35 with a yearly renewal fee of
$10. All permit fees are waived for senior citizens 65 years or older. Under
4 February 2017 | Copper Lakes Copper Lakes | February 2017 5
current guidelines, a permitted location is allowed five (5) free false
alarms annually. Any subsequent false alarms during your permitted
year are subject to a $75 fine that is billed to the permit holder’s address.
If a site has an active alarm system, yet does not have a permit to operate
such alarm, a false alarm may result in a Class C citation, which could
range up to $500.
Should you or your residents require a copy of the permit application form,
or would like to review the regulations regarding permit requirements,
you may do so by visiting the Harris County Sheriff’s Office website at
www.hcso.hctx.net. The application can be printed from the website,
then completed and mailed to our office with the applicable fees. We are
currently in the planning stages of making the application and payment
process available on-line for the convenience to the public. Should you
have any questions, please contact the Harris County Sheriff’s Office
Alarm Detail at 713-755-4600 M-F, 8 AM- 5 PM. If you would like any of our
Alarm Detail personnel to attend one of your HOA meetings, we would be
glad to attend and answer as many questions as possible.
LOST AND FOUND PETS
Residents can now place pictures and information for lost and found
animals under the neighborhood pictures tab of the Copper Lakes
website, www.copperlakes.com. If you have lost or found a pet, please
use this great tool to let the neighborhood know and hopefully reunite
the pet with their family.
VETERINARY PUBLIC HEALTH LEASH LAW
Animals that are not properly restrained pose a threat to all our residents.
While you may know your pet is friendly, an animal running at someone
who is walking by is very scary for that person. Many children are afraid
of animals and become frightened, which could result in the child getting
hurt trying to avoid the animal. Veterinary Public Health (formerly called
Harris County Animal Control) advises that “All dogs and cats must be
kept under restraint while in the unincorporated areas of Harris County,
Texas. The custodian of a dog or cat is not authorized to have, harbor
or keep any unlicensed dog or cat or to allow any dog or cat to become
a stray.” Restraint is defined as “the control of a dog or cat under the
following circumstances:
1. When it is controlled by a line or leash not more then six (6) feet in
length, if the line or leash is held by a human being who is capable of
controlling or governing the dog or cat in question or
2. When it is within a fully enclosed vehicle or
3. When it is on the premise of the custodian and the animal does not
have access to sidewalk to street.”
While it may be nice to have your animal out in the yard while you work
or play, it is against the law, unless the animal is properly restrained.
Let’s all help keep our community a safe and comfortable place for all
our residents by being responsible pet owners. This will not only protect
anyone who may be walking or bicycling in the area, but also the pet
owner who could be held legally responsible or possibly sued for failing
to properly restrain their pet.
TEENAGE JOB SEEKERS
Texas Christian Alumni - Star Student & Star Athlete
Texas Christian School Class of 2016, Michael Johnson received a full ride
scholarship to Chadron State University where he is a star athlete and student.
Due to his dedication and skill, Michael was named the Eagle of the Week for
Chadron State. Chadron wrote that “Johnson had his first career double-double
in an Eagle win during Christmas break. The freshman was the key to victory
down the stretch, grabbing several defensive rebounds and following up with
free throws to finish with 18 points and 13 rebounds, which were both highs for
either team in the game. In the final three minutes, Johnson had seven of the
Eagles’ final 15 points, adding four critical rebounds and one steal during that
span.” Texas Christian is proud of the student athlete Michael has continued to
be. Keep shining for the Lord Michael!!! Join us February 21 st at 6:30 PM for
The annual Girl Scout Cookie sale began on February 7 th . We are
celebrating 100 years of cookie sales in 2017. Way back in 1917, Girl
sold cookies to support service projects in the first known cookie sale.
Cookie sales today fund individual troop activities, as well as supporting
Council camps and programs. Girl Scouts who sell Girl Scout Cookies
are also developing the 5 skills of: goal setting, decision making, money
management, people skills and business ethics. These are skills that
will last a life time and lead to future success. Don’t miss trying our new
are all the OTHER great cookies!
Boy Scouts
Boy Scouts of America -
Copperhead District
For 100 years, Scouting programs have instilled in youth the values found
in the Scout Oath and Scout Law. Today, these values are just as relevant
in helping youth grow to their full potential as they were in 1910. Scouting
helps youth develop academic skills, self-confidence, ethics, leadership
skills, outdoor skills and citizenship skills that influence their adult lives.
The Boy Scouts of America provides youth with programs and activities
that allow them to:
• Try new things.
• Provide service to others.
• Build self-confidence.
• Reinforce ethical standards.
Scouting provides youth with a sense that they are important as
individuals while promoting activities that lead to personal responsibility
and high self-esteem. As a result, when hard decisions have to be made,
peer pressure can be resisted and the right choices can be made.
Scouting provides a rewarding experience for boys ages 5 to 21. Scouting
through the local Packs and Troops teach outdoor and life skills which
help our youth Be Prepared. Your area is serviced by the BSA Sam
Houston Area Counsel - Copperhead District which includes 23 Cub Scout
Packs (boys 5 to 10 years old), 13 Troops (boys from 11 to 18 years old)
and 10 Venturing units (boys and girls from 14 to 21). Our Units typically
meet weekly.
Many of our units are supported by the local Elementary Schools
including: Birkes, Copeland, Duryea, Fiest, Hemmingway, Holmsley,
Horne, Jowell, Lowery, Metcalf, Owens, Postma, Robinson, Sheridan,
Steps for Students:
A 5k Run/Walk
Are you a runner who enjoys family-friendly
races? Are you an alumnus of a parochial
school? Do your children, grandchildren or
children of friends attend a parochial school?
Do you like to have fun with 10,000+ plus
people? If you answered yes to any of these
questions or even if you didn’t, the 2017 Steps
for Students 5k Race/Walk is for you. Steps for Students is a 5k USA Track
and Field Association sanctioned race which benefits Catholic education
in the Archdiocese of Galveston-Houston. Held every year in February,
Steps for Students has grown to include over 10,000 participants, filling
the streets around the Co-Cathedral with runners, walkers, families, kids
and adults. Each Catholic school in the Archdiocese has its own team
which you can join or donate to. Race Day begins with a sunrise Mass at
the Co-Cathedral followed by the race itself. In 2017, the race will take a
new, East-West direction under I69, but it will still begin and end at the
Co-Cathedral. Afterward, you can enjoy the Post Race Party in the nearby
Race Day Village. All donations and registration fees (minus a $3 fee) go
directly to your designated school, where they can be used to help fund
scholarships, improve the campus, add to the educational experience of
the students or whatever is needed or desired. If running and getting up
early is not your thing, there is even a Snooze option. You can also sponsor
your favorite runner or school by simply making a donation. The date
for the 2017 Steps for Students 5k Race/Walk is Saturday, February 18,
2017. The sunrise Mass begins at 6:30 AM with the race itself beginning
at 8 AM. Registration is currently underway, but the last day to register at
the low price of $15 (which includes a t-shirt) is February 1, 2017. After
that, registration increases to $25, so register early. Steps for Students is
a great way to get out, get some exercise, see our beautiful city with your
own eyes and make some new friends, all the while supporting Catholic
education and the wonderful opportunities it provides to students of all
backgrounds and faiths. For more information about Steps for Students
