For your convenience, below is an extract of a few deed restrictions and 

architectural guidelines: 

1. Fences need to be maintained. All perimeter fences shall be six (6) feet 

in height. Fences between house and garage may be between four and 

six (4 and 6) feet; however, it cannot exceed six (6) feet in height. The only 

exception is that eight (8) foot fencing may be allowed where it borders 

common areas. 

- No portion of a wood fence on a lot which is visible from any street may 

be painted or stained. 

- Wrought iron fences must be black and no more than six (6) feet in 

height. Spacing bars must be no greater than 3” on center. 

- There shall be no chain link or wire fences. 

2. No trade or business and no noxious or offensive activity shall be 

carried on or upon any lot or tract. 

3. No trailer, basement, tent, garage or other similar building erected 

on any said property shall be used at any time as a residence, either 

temporarily or permanently, nor shall any structure of a temporary 

nature be used as a residence. 

4. No building, trailer, mobile home, metallic building, whether 

permanent or temporary, shall be moved onto a lot affected hereby. 

Further, no truck, trailer, automobile or other similar type structure or 

vehicle may be parked or abandoned in the street, driveway or yard 

(front or back) anywhere in the subdivision. 

5. No truck, bus or trailer, shall be left parked in the street in front of any 

lot… and no truck, bus, boat or trailer shall be left parked in any driveway 

or other portion of the lot exposed to public view. 

6. No window or wall type air conditioners shall be permitted to be used, 

erected, placed or maintained on or in any building in our subdivision. 

For additional information on the above please refer to subdivision 

Restrictive Covenants and Architectural Guidelines. 

In addition: 

1. As a reminder, it is illegal to park facing the wrong way on our streets. 

You can be ticketed for this offense. 

2. Trash: please do not leave yard residue, bagged or tied, construction 

material or other trash at the curb other than the evening before or day 

of trash pickup. To ensure your trash is picked up, please have it at the 

curb by 7 AM on Tuesday or Friday, except when those are holidays. In 

the same vein, please return your trash pails to an out of sight location 

on the day of trash removal. 

WEST MEMORIAL NEWS AND UPDATES 

The Constables have asked that we remind everyone to please have your 

house number prominently displayed and readable from the street. This 

is for your safety and will assist them in being able to locate your home 

quickly should you need assistance. 

If your trash or recycle is not being picked up on Tuesday or Friday, 

please call High Sierra Management and notified them. If it is not picked, 

please do not leave it at curb until the next trash day. The trash and 

recycle must be out by 7AM in order for it to be picked up. 

We have a new deputy under our contract with the Constables, Deputy 

K.Z. Jenkins. Please extend him a warm welcome when you see him 

patrolling our neighborhood. Deputy Botard has transferred to the 

Animal Cruelty Division. We would like to thank her for her service to your 

community and wish her the best of luck in her new endeavor. 

ANIMAL INFORMATION 

STRAY ANIMALS 

Do not hesitate to call Harris County Animal Control at 281-999-3191, if 

you see animals that are roaming the neighborhood unleashed. 

LEASH LAW “HARRIS COUNTY” 

Animals that are not properly restrained pose a threat to all our residents. 

While you may know your pet is friendly, an animal running at someone 

who is walking by is very scary for that person. Many children are afraid 

of animals and become frightened, which could result in the child getting 

hurt trying to avoid the animal. 

Veterinary Public Health (formerly called Harris County Animal Control) 

advises that “All dogs and cats must be kept under restraint while in the 

unincorporated areas of Harris County, Texas. The custodian of a dog or 

cat is not authorized to have, harbor or keep any unlicensed dog or cat, 

nor to allow any dog or cat to become a stray.” 

Restraint is defined as “the control of a dog or cat under the following 

circumstances: 

1. When it is controlled by a line or leash not more than six (6) feet in 

length, if the line or leash is held by a human being, who is capable of 

controlling or governing the dog or cat in question. 

2. When it is within a fully enclosed vehicle. 

3. When it is on the premise of the custodian and the animal does not 

have access to sidewalk or street.” 

While it may be nice to have your animal out in the yard while you work or 

play, it is against the law, unless the animal is properly restrained. 

Let’s all help keep our community a safe and comfortable place for all 

our residents by being responsible pet owners. This will not only protect 

anyone who may be walking or bicycling in the area, but also the pet 

owner who could be held legally responsible or possibly sued for failing 

to properly restrain their pet. 

WEST MEMORIAL CONSTABLES 

Our Constables patrol our subdivision 24 hours a day/seven days a week. 

Please call them at 281-463-6666 to report any disturbance or to request 

vacation patrols. 

PATROLLING CHANGES 

Security on Duty may not always be in their Patrol Car; they have an 

opportunity to take training for Patrolling on Bicycles. So heads up… and 

keep our neighborhood safe for everyone.

MANAGEMENT COMPANY 

HIGH SIERRA MANAGEMENT, INC 

Tami Martin is the Association’s Manager and Dannielle Raper is the 

Association’s Assistant Manager. The Association has a direct phone 

number for your convenience. The number is 1-866-844-3933 and will 

direct you to whomever in the management staff you wish to speak 

with; manager, administrative staff, accounting and the work order 

department. For emergency purposes, this number also provides you 

with twenty-four hour emergency service. When contacting the office or 

speaking with the answering service, please be sure to give your name, 

homeowner association, address and telephone number where the 

call can be returned. The management office is located at 722 Pin Oak 

Road, Katy, Texas 77494 and office hours are Monday through Friday 

8 AM to 5 PM. You may also contact your management team by visiting 

the High Sierra Management website at www.highsierramanagement. 

com and selecting “Online Requests.” High Sierra Management will 

be performing the monthly deed restriction inspections and citing all 

violations of the governing documents. If you do not have the rules 

and regulations, you may download a copy from www.WestMemorial. 

org or contact the management company and request a copy. We are 

sure you are all eager to help maintain the property values and exterior 

appearance of our community and hope we can count on your continued 

support in this effort. As a reminder, West Memorial Civic Association 

is a deed restricted community and all changes or additions to the 

exterior of the home must be approved by the Association prior to any 

work commencing. Requests for home improvements can be obtained 

through management. The Board of Directors meetings are held monthly 

in the association clubhouse (by the pool) on the fourth Tuesday at 7 PM 

and all homeowners are welcome to attend. You may also email or call 

with any questions or concerns at any time. We thank you all in advance 

for your kind cooperation and continued help in making West Memorial 

a great place to live!

WEST MEMORIAL EMAIL ALERT 

& NOTIFICATION SYSTEM 

West Memorial has a new alert and notification system that works with 

email. The alerts are for emergency notifications, security alerts and 

messages from our constables. The notifications are for neighborhood 

events, meetings and issues. To be a part of the system, you must 

request the service. If you are interested, open our web site at www. 

westmemorial.org and locate the Sign-Up icon on the right side of the 

main page. Follow the instructions and you will receive all future alerts 

and notifications. Anyone wishing to send an alert or notification should 

submit the message to westmemorial@westmemorial.org for approval, 

posting and transmission. Please direct any questions to harry@ 

westmemorial.org. 

TRASH SERVICE 

In January, WCA Waste (WCA) became your trash collection provider. 

Trash service days are TUESDAY AND FRIDAY. Please have trash out at 

curb by 7 AM each pick up day. Heavy Trash and/or extra bags are picked 

up on both pick-up days, Tuesday and Friday. 

RECYCLING IS EVERY FRIDAY 

WCA takes great pride in our recycling program and efforts. Ensuring the 

best recycle program for our customers takes time and effort on both 

sides. Please remove caps, liquids and food products from inside the 

containers. Please only use the recycle bins for recyclable materials, not 

as an extra trash container. 

WCA will collect papers, plastics, aluminum and tin cans that are placed 

within the provided recycling bin. If items exceed container capacity, 

please place them adjacent to bin. 

WCA will provide each current residence with one recycling bin. WCA will 

replace any bins that are defective or otherwise become unusable due to 

normal wear and tear. Theft, lost or additional bins can be replaced at $8 

each. If you find items left in your bin that are not recyclable please dispose 

of these items in your trash container for the next scheduled pick up. 

HOLIDAYS 

When regular pick-up falls on a holiday, New Year’s Day, Memorial Day, 

July 4 th (Independence Day), Labor Day, Thanksgiving Day, and Christmas 

Day, the pick-up will be made on the next regular scheduled pick-up day. 

If your recycling day falls on a holiday it will be picked up the next week 

on your normal scheduled recycle day. 

BILLING 

WCA will invoice each individual residence on a quarterly basis. Bills 

are due 30 days after receipt. Any residents failing to pay will receive a 

statement, have services discontinued and incur a $25 late/reconnect 

service fee.

CLUBHOUSE RENTAL 

If you are interested in renting the clubhouse, please call Dannielle Raper 

at 1-866-844-3933. At the time your call is returned, the guidelines for 

renting and using the clubhouse will be provided. Be sure you allow 

yourself plenty of time to fulfill the requirements, such as hiring security 

officers. You will be provided with the names and phone numbers of the 

individuals to contact to make the necessary arrangements. 

A few, but not all, of the guidelines are listed below: 

1. There is no smoking in the clubhouse. 

2. Residents must have all dues/assessments paid prior to booking the 

clubhouse. 

3. A certified check for all rental fees and deposits is required 30 days in 

advance. 

4. The security deposit will be returned within 30 days after the date of 

the event based on the condition the premises was left in. 

5. Renter is responsible for the conduct of all attendees. 

6. Police Officers are required at all functions of 50 or more attendees or 

at any event in which alcohol will be served. Arrangements and payment, 

for the officers, are to be made by the renter.

WEST MEMORIAL PARK 

Our community park is located at 22415 Kingsland and is open to all West 

Memorial residents for outdoor activities. It has playground equipment 

and a large sheltered pavilion. 

SOLICITING 

Soliciting is prohibited in West Memorial Subdivision. If you are 

approached by a solicitor, please call the Constable’s office at 281- 

463-6666. Continue to call this number if you see suspicious person or 

vehicles. 

REWARD 

West Memorial Civic Association’s Board has approved the following: 

A $250 reward to anyone providing information leading to the arrest 

and prosecution of person or persons vandalizing or destroying West 

Memorial Civic Association property. 


WEST MEMORIAL WEBSITE 

www.westmemorial.org is the address for West Memorial information 

on the internet. The web site contains pool information, Board member 

contacts and complete documentation of your deed restrictions. It 

also contains neighborhood information, including schools, security, 

recreation and local worship centers. Check it out, you might find 

something you have been looking for. 

DEED RESTRICTIONS 

The purpose of Deed Restrictions in your neighborhood is to protect and 

enhance property values. They set guidelines for initial construction, 

perpetual maintenance and property use. As residents agree to abide by 

the majority view; the style and standards of a community are established 

and everyone benefits. For your information, restrictions are written by 

the developer before the first home is constructed and the Association is 

then charged with the on-going responsibility of enforcing them. They can 

be changed, but a very large percentage vote of homeowners is required 

to do so. Please let us know if you see a problem in the neighborhood. 

STREET LIGHTS 

Your Association pays for streetlights from your annual dues, whether 

they work or not. If a light is out in your area, please call 713-207-2222 and 

report it. You may also report outages online at www.centerpointenergy. 

com/outage. Each light has a number on it. When reporting the out light, 

give the pole number and street location. We want all lights to work. A 

lighted area is a safer area. 

HOMESCHOOLING IN THE KATY AREA? 

Want to get out, socialize and meet other homeschoolers who are of 

elementary age (6 to 10 year olds)? Then head over to our house, 22739

great games, fun activities and tons of imagination to keep the kids learning

we do not hear back from you after 3 tries, we will remove you from the

KATY ISD ANNOUNCES ATHLETIC HALL OF HONOR 

Nominations being accepted for past and present athletic contributors. 

Katy ISD is pleased to announce the establishment of an Athletic Hall 

of Honor to recognize the efforts and contributions of former student 

athletes, athletic teams, coaches and special merit individuals who 

have brought distinction, honor and excellence to themselves and to the 

District. 

Nominations are now being accepted through March 15, 2017. 

Submissions will be reviewed by the Katy ISD Athletic Hall of Honor 

Honorary Board and voted on by the Katy ISD Athletic Hall of Honor 

Committee. Once submitted, a nominee’s application will remain active 

for five years with the Honorary Board. Due to the sheer volume of alumni 

worthy of such an honor, nominations will be accepted annually. 

The Hall of Honor Committee has already selected the following four 

state championship teams to be honored in the inaugural class of the 

Athletic Hall of Honor: 

Katy High School 1959 Football State Champions 

Katy High School 1997 Football State Champions 

Taylor High School 1997 Tennis State Champions 

Taylor High School 1998 Tennis State Champions. 

Individuals and state championship teams will be honored at a 2017 fall 

banquet and a Katy ISD football game. 

State championship teams will continue to be added to the Athletic Hall 

of Honor every year.

KATY ISD ANNOUNCES NEW CAMPUS ATHLETIC 

COORDINATORS FOR MORTON RANCH 

Katy ISD is pleased to announce the addition of Ron Counter and B.J. 

William Gotte as our new Campus Athletic Coordinator/Head Football 

Coach’s for Morton Ranch High School and Paetow High School. Both 

positions were approved unanimously during the Katy ISD Board of 

Trustees January Work Study meeting. 

Coach Counter comes to Morton Ranch High from Stafford High 

where he was the head football coach and athletic director for the 

last four years. During his time at Stafford, Coach Counter led the 

program into the playoffs four years in a row. Prior to Stafford, 

Coach Counter made coaching stops at Strake Jesuit High, Round 

Rock Westwood High, Spring Woods High, Alief Hastings High and 

Klein Oak High. Coach Counter has also received several “Coach of 

the Year” honors. 

For Coach Gotte, moving to Paetow High School means staying close to 

home. Growing up he attended Cimarron Elementary, West Memorial 

Junior High and graduated “class of ‘97” at Katy High School, which 

is where he also began his career in 2001. Coach Gotte made stops at 

Deer Park High, La Marque High and Flower Mound Marcus High prior 

to returning to Katy High in 2009. His role as an Offensive Coordinator 

at Katy High School has played an integral part in winning three state 

championships. 

The Katy ISD Athletic Department is excited to welcome both coaches 

to these new endeavors within the Katy ISD family. Both coaches began 

their new journey on February 1 st . 

PATTISON ELEMENTARY KINDERGARTEN ROUND UP NIGHT 

Pattison Elementary Kindergarten “ROUND UP” night is Thursday, 

March 23 rd at 6 PM. This one-time spring event is for all incoming 

kindergarten students to meet the teachers and see the classrooms 

while parents hear about Pattison’s curriculum for next year. 

Students must be 5 years old by September 1, 2017 to enter 

kindergarten. We will provide information for Pre-Registration, which

SPRING SOCCER SIGN UPS

KATY/FULSHEAR/WEST HOUSTON/WESTPARK BELTWAY 

Registration for Fun, Fair, Positive Soccer (FFPS) is open for boys and girls 

ages 4 to 18 for the SPRING Season. Games start on April 8, 2017. FFPS 

is a non-profit youth soccer program dedicated to providing a positive 

youth sports experience for all children. Founded in 1986 in Katy, Texas, 

FFPS has grown to 22 leagues and 16,000 players throughout the Greater 

Houston area. FFPS offers children a fun and fair experience, including 

one practice per week, a full uniform and trophy for every player, equal 

playing time and play every position, co-ed/balanced teams, positive 

coaching and more. No tryouts are required.

Feb. 11 th through Mar. 2 nd : $112 

Mar. 3 rd through Mar. 23 rd : $117 

Mar. 24 th through Full: $122

KATY AREA RUNNING CLUB 

The Katy Area Running Club is a 501(c)3 non-profit corporation which 

exists to serve people living in and around Katy, Texas who have an interest 

in running. We are a community of people of all ages, backgrounds, 

heritages and abilities who share a common interest - running! Our focus 

is on group runs, having fun, socializing and sharing our knowledge and

FOR CHARITIES FUNDRAISER 

Join us for the 1 st Katy Color Run 5K on Saturday, March 25, 2017 at APEX

family fun event is a joint fundraiser between Christ Clinic, Clothed by

HOUSTON WING - COMMEMORATIVE AIR FORCE 

2017 OPEN HOUSE & VINTAGE AIRCRAFT FLY-IN 

April 22-23, 2017 will be a weekend dedicated in recognition of the 

70 th anniversary the formation of the United States Air Force, as the 

Commemorative Air Force (CAF) Houston Wing presents its annual Open 

House at the West Houston Airport. 

This event provides a rare opportunity for the public of all ages to immerse 

themselves in the sights and sounds of WWII and other authentic vintage 

military aircraft, which played a huge role in our American history. 

In addition to aircraft, several historic military vehicles will be on display 

as well as a very unique anti-aircraft gun trailer exhibit from the Battleship 

Texas. Our hangar’s WWII museum will also be open and docents will be 

available to help all ages enjoy the museum’s displays. 

West Houston Airport is located at 18000 Groschke Rd., 2 miles north of 

I-10 and between Hwy. 6 and Barker Cypress, will be the place to visit 

on Saturday and Sunday, April 22 nd and 23 rd from 10 AM to 5 PM. The 

admission fee is $10 per car, which goes to supporting the organizations 

efforts to keep these aircraft flying. Food, drinks and souvenirs and

KATY VOCAL EXPRESS 

Katy Vocal Express, the newest prospective Sweet Adelines Chorus 

has arrived in the Katy area. The name honors the history of the Katy 

railroad while looking forward to the barbershop harmony that is now 

being made in Katy. Ladies from the Katy/West Houston area are invited 

to attend chorus rehearsal any Thursday evening, 7-9PM at Holy 

Covenant United Methodist Church, 22111 Morton Ranch Road, Katy

Singers of all ranges of experience make up KVE. Some have years of 

chorus singing while others have very little singing experience but the

The Titmouse Club is a nature program for children ages 2 ½ to 5

March 2 nd - March 4 th - World’s Championship Bar-B-Que Contest.

March 11 th - Join us for Texas’ largest canoe and kayak race - the 

45 th Annual Buffalo Bayou Partnership Regatta! Paddlers, ages 12 

and up, are encouraged to participate in the 15-mile American 

Canoe Association sanctioned race along the scenic Buffalo 

Bayou. Whether you are entering competitively or paddling 

for pleasure, you won’t want to miss out on this longstanding 

Houston tradition! Those not wanting to paddle can cheer on 

racers along the race route or catch the outdoor fun at the finish 

line festivities at Sesquicentennial Park (500 block of Preston 

Street). The Buffalo Bayou Partnership Regatta is rain or shine. 

If cancellation does take place due to severe water or weather 

conditions, all entry fees will support the work of Buffalo Bayou

March 19 th - Tour de Houston Presented by Apache Corporation. 

The annual bike ride offers Houstonians and visitors a unique 

way to view the city with routes winding through Houston’s 

historic neighborhoods, scenic districts and parks while raising 

funds for the city’s Reforest Houston program. With three ride 

length options, the Tour de Houston is the perfect event for 

leisure riders or cycling enthusiasts. In addition, it is a BP MS 

150 recommended training ride. Riders will start and end at 

City Hall located at 901 Bagby. This event begins and ends in 

Hermann Square at City Hall. Riders and volunteers will enjoy a

March 24 th - 26 th - 2017 Bassmaster Classic & Expo. In conjunction 

with the Bassmaster Classic in Lake Conroe there will also be an 

Expo at the George R. Brown Convention Center in Houston, TX. The 

classic will start off with takeoff beginning each day at Lake Conroe 

Park at a time to be announced soon. There will be off-site parking 

and shuttles for fans wanting to attend. This event is free and 

located at Lake Conroe Park, 14968 TX-105, Montgomery, TX 77356. 

The Outdoor Expo will take place at the George R. Brown Convention 

Center, while Weigh-Ins, will take place at Minute Maid Park, both

Festival begins the last week in March on the Old Downtown

• FIRE SAFETY FOR ADULTS - Even adults need fire safety reminders once 

in a while. Tom Petty with the Harris County Fire Marshall’s office will be at 

the library on Tuesday, March 21 st at 3 PM to remind us what to do if a fire 


happens to us. This seminar, designed for older adults covers electrical and 

cooking safety, precautions when sleeping as well as slip and fall hazards, the 

importance of working smoke alarms, having and practicing a fire exit plan 

and more. Come meet Cinder, a trained K-9 dog who specializes in helping 

teach fire safety. 

• TIMELESS TRAVELERS: NOAA OCEAN DISCOVERY DAY - Seniors 55+ are 

invited to join the library’s Timeless Travelers for a FREE trip to the NOAA 

lab in Galveston for Ocean Discovery Day, courtesy of the Friends of Maud 

Marks Library and Precinct Three Transportation. The bus departs the library

• INFANT STORYTIME - This program will meet each Tuesday morning at

• STORYTIME - Storytime for preschool-aged children is held each Wednesday

Special pals is selling a 2017 Red, White & Rescue 

Calendar, a project helping to fundraise for the 

shelter. The Red, White & Rescue Calendar is a 

collaboration between first responders and special 

pals. The calendar features first responders from 

the Katy, West Houston, Richmond, Rosenberg and 

Fulshear areas along with their own adopted dogs or 

adoptable dogs from special pals. “Our goal for this 

calendar is to help raise funds and awareness for the 

shelter,” said Melissa Houser, president of special pals. 

“We also want to recognize local first responders who 

protect our communities every day. They work hard to save human lives while we work hard to save 

animal lives.” Eight local agencies are represented in the 2017 Red, White & Rescue Calendar: Fort

RODEO HISTORY/FACTS 

RODEO PARADE 

In 1937, planning had begun for the first Rodeo Parade leading up to the 1938 Houston 

Livestock Show and Rodeo. The first parade was headed by Mounted Police and various 

dignitaries on the city, county and state levels, who also rode horseback. There were two 

bands with a Drum and Bugle Corp. 

In 1952, the Salt Grass Trail ride was the first trail ride that was formed by only a few men. 

The following year, the publicity from that ride attracted more people to join. 

All of the Trail Riders converge on Memorial Park to camp out for the night before heading 

down Memorial Drive to where it empties out onto Texas Ave to line up for the parade. 

The parade has approximately 115 different groups joining in the festivities. There are

dignitaries on horseback and in vehicles. 

TRAIL RIDES 

The Trail Rides (cavalcades) are a long tradition with the rodeo and gather at Memorial 

Park to camp for a rest and party before the big Annual Rodeo Parade through Downtown 

Houston. 

Salt Grass Trail Ride - 85-mile (137 km) ride from Cat Spring, Texas, established in 1952 

Sam Houston Trail Ride - 66-mile (106 km) ride from Montgomery, Texas, established in 1955 

Old Spanish Trail Ride - 216-mile (348 km) ride from Logansport, Louisiana, established in

Prairie View Trail Ride - 102-mile (164 km) ride from Sunnyside, Texas, established in 1957 

Valley Lodge Trail Ride - 72-mile (116 km) ride from Brookshire, Texas, established in 1959 

The Spanish Trail Ride - 112-mile (180 km) ride from Coldspring, Texas, established in 1961 

Texas Independence Trail Ride - 92-mile (148 km) ride from Brazoria, Texas, established in 

1961 

Los Vaqueros Rio Grande Trail Ride - 386-mile (621 km) ride from Hidalgo, Texas, established 

in 1973 

Southwestern Trail Ride - 100-mile (160 km) ride from Brazoria, Texas, established in 1974 

Northeastern Trail Ride - 108-mile (174 km) ride from Beaumont, Texas, established in 1982

The Mission Trail Ride - 210-mile (340 km) ride from San Antonio, Texas, established in 1990 

Southwest Trail Ride - 120-mile (190 km) ride from Rosenberg, Texas, established in 1993 

WORLD’S CHAMPIONSHIP BAR-B-QUE CONTEST 

The World’s Championship Bar-B-Que Contest, also simply known as “The Cookoff,” started 

in 1974 and has consistently drawn massive attendance numbers for the three-day event, 


drawing a record 264,132 visitors in 2013. It takes place on the southern 

parking lot of NRG Stadium, with over 350 teams participating every year 

and is generally considered a “Hot Ticket,” as most are for members or by 

invitation only. While the event is open to the general public, those that 

can get into the tents are generally allowed an unlimited amount of food 

and beverages. 

THE CALF SCRAMBLE 

Since the addition of the event in 1942, it has been one of the more 

popular events during the actual rodeo. The event features 14 calves and 

28 students who must try to capture one of the calves, put a halter on 

it and bring it back into the “winners square” in order to claim the win. 

One of the rules is that as long as a contestant is actually in the act of 

holding the calf (i.e. Holding it by the tail) to get the halter on, no other 

participant may interfere unless the calf wriggles itself free. It’s at this 

point where the calf is fair game once again. The event is held nightly 

between major events in the Reliant Stadium. Each of the students who 

catch a calf is awarded a $1,250 certificate to purchase a registered beef 

heifer. Raising and showing this heifer becomes a yearlong project as 

the scrambler sees to the grooming, feeding and care of the animal. The 

exhibitor returns to the Houston Livestock Show the following year for a 

special competition. Calf Scramble exhibitors receive a $250 bonus when 

they return to compete with their heifer, totaling their $1,500 certificate. 

A similar events for youngsters is Mutton Bustin’, for 5 and 6-year-olds, 

who try to ride on top of a sheep for eight seconds.

Rodeo Houston also features the traditional rodeo events of bull riding, 

bareback riding, saddle bronc riding, team roping, steer wrestling, calf 

roping, barrel racing (women only) and chuck wagon racing. 

TRANSPORTATION 

With between 60,000 and 150,000 people attending the rodeo each day, 

every year, the city’s transportation infrastructure is taxed as it must 

also compete with regular Houston Rush Hour on regular business days. 

There are a variety of ways into and out of the complex that include Park 

and Ride lots in certain parts of the city that are provided by the event as 

an express straight onto the property, Taxi, Self Parking, and METRORail. 

The Coordinators of the event try to persuade attendees to use public 

transportation as the most convenient way to and from the Rodeo.
