Dr R.D. Ravindran
Chairman, Aravind Eye Care System
Interaction with Dr. S. Suresh, Associate Professor,
Department of Public Health Dentistry,
Vishnu Dental College, Bhimavaram.
“It is important for the institutions to have values and principles.
Then, the success of an institution depends on how well the staff of
the institution understands and implements its values system” the
words were flowing from a gentle yet firm voice of a gentleman.
Accompanied by Mr. Ravi Chandran, the Vice Chairman of Sri
Vishnu Educational Society, he was addressing the heads of the
institutions and various departments at the Bhimavaram
campus.
'Aravind Eye Care System' (AECS), as it is called today, had a
humble beginning as 'Aravind eye hospital' in 1976 by Dr.
Govindappa Venkataswamy (whom the staff fondly
remembers as Dr. V) in Madurai, Tamil Nadu. Today the AECS
encompasses five tertiary hospitals, a manufacturing centre for
ophthalmic products, an international research foundation and
a resource and training centre that is revolutionizing hundreds
of eye care programs across the developing world. It is the largest and
the most productive eye care facility in the world, in terms of surgical
volume and the number of patients treated. It has already made a major
impact in eradicating cataract related blindness in India. Aravind hospitals received
various awards, including Champalimaud vision award (2007), Conrad N. Hilton
Humanitarian Prize (2010), Gates award for global health (2010), India's most
innovative hospital award at India health care awards (2010), FICCI award for best
private hospital in India etc.
Dr.Ravilla Duraisami Ravindran has been serving as the Chairman of the Aravind
Eye Care System since 2010. He did his MBBS from Stanley Medical College, Chennai
and Masters in the field of Cataract and Intraocular Lens Surgery from Madurai
Medical College, Madurai, Tamil Nadu. Dr.Ravindran started his Ophthalmology
Practice under Dr.G.Venkataswamy, the founder of Aravind Eye Care System in 1987.
After serving as Chief Medical Officer in the Aravind Eye Hospital at Tirunelveli,
Coimbatore and Pondicherry for close to 23 years, Dr. Ravindran took the role of
Chairman of Aravind Eye Care System from 2010. He is involved in bringing changes
to standardize quality eye care across Aravind Eye Care System. He has presented
papers in numerous International and National Conferences both on clinical as well
as managerial aspects of eye Care. He has over forty publications in national and
international ophthalmology journals. He served as a Regional Co Chair for
International Association for Prevention of Blindness from 2004 to 2012 and
contributes as a Board Member of VISION 2020 Right to Sight India since 2008. He is
a recipient of several national and international awards and recognition.
Amid his busy schedule during his visit to Bhimavaram, he took out time for an
interview. It is transcribed with the valuable contributions from Dr. MV Ramesh,
Senior Lecturer and Dr. P. Jhansi, Lecturer, Department of Public Health Dentistry,
Vishnu Dental College.
Q 1: Please tell us about your journey as a young medical graduate from Stanley Medical College to
the Chief Medical Officer at Aravind Eye Hospitals to the Chairman of Aravind Eye Care System.
I did my MBBS from Stanley medical college, Chennai, which was then called Madras. I was fortunate few of
my batch to finish the five and a half year course without any failure in between. I remember receiving few
medals from my college and University too. Stanley was a medical college with lot of spirit and values; we call
it as 'Stanlian spirit'. My connection with Aravind Hospitals started in 1978, during the semester-break after
completing my 2ndyear of MBBS. I used to attend the eye camps organized by SatyaSai Organization and watch
the ophthalmologists performing procedures in hospital. This exposure helped me to do well in my
Ophthalmology classes, which we get to attend in 3rd year. After completing my MBBS, I joined Aravind as a
full time student in 'Diploma in Ophthalmology' (DO). When we were in Internship, our job was limited to
attending our patients in OPDs, inpatients in wards, and assisting professors in Operation theaters. We used to
handle patients where diagnosis was already done and treatment was already planned, which was no real
challenge. We used to treat patients as specimens in pathology and refer to them as 'cases'. But here in
Aravind we have to talk to patient, examine them, do the investigations, arrive at diagnosis, plan the treatment
and do the procedures, which was challenging yet gratifying. After joining Aravind, I stopped referring to
patients as cases and learned to treat them with empathy. Immediately after completing my diploma, I was
asked to take care of the new hospital, started in Theni. Later I went on to do my Masters in Ophthalmology
from Madurai medical college. By the time I completed my Masters, a new Aravind Eye Hospital was started at
Tirunelveli on a regular basis and I joined there as Chief Medical Officer. I was the only doctor for one year
before a team of doctors joined and the scale of operations were expanded. From Tirunelveli, my journey
continued as Chief Medical Officer at the newly opened Aravind hospitals at Coimbatore and Pondicherry. And
then I was asked to come back to Madurai to serve as the Chairman of AECS. Thus my journey that started from
Madurai completed one full circle to reach Madurai again. I feel fortunate that I was in right place at right time.
My professional development is an integral part of the development of Aravind Eye Care System.

ISSUE 14 JANUARY 2017
Q 2: That is really a long and exciting journey. How did you feel
when your role was shifted from a Chief Medical Officer to the
Chairman of AECS?
It was a mixed. I felt honored and at the same time nervous too. The
thought that I was to take the responsibility that was once handled by
Dr. V and Dr. Namperumalsamy made me feel responsible. I
considered it as a sacred responsibility and I decided to give my best.
Both of them left their mark on AECS in their own ways. It was Dr. V
who imparted the values that AECS has today. He believed that
intelligence and capability are not enough; There must also be the joy
of doing something beautiful. Dr. Namperumalsamy is known for
bringing assembly-line efficiency to eye surgery. As the chairman of
AECS, he was announced by Time magazine as one of the 100 most
influential people in the world in terms of service in the year 2010.
Under his chairmanship AECS received the 2010 Conrad N. Hilton
Humanitarian Prize, which is awarded annually to an organization that
does exemplary work to alleviate human suffering.
from April2015- March 2016.
Thus Aravind Hospital, Madurai has gradually expanded and
transformed into Aravind Eye Care System.
Q 4: It is said that the doctors and supporting staff at Aravind
are highly passionate about their work and empathetic with
patients. What is the inspiration behind this work culture?
The inspiration has been there since the inception of Aravind. Major
credit goes to Dr. V for inculcating the spirit and values into our system.
When it comes to sustaining the spirit, the key lies in recruitment. We
have developed our own system of recruiting doctors and staff with
desired qualities. While recruiting doctors, we not only look for
qualifications but aptitude too. Each time we give them a new
challenge, they come up with good solutions. They see themselves
growing in Aravind in every way, which keeps them motivated.
free and paid. We manage the hospitals with the amount we receive
from paid patients. That means, those who are paying for the services
are actually cross subsidizing for those who cannot pay. Over that we
receive external funds. AECS is World Health Organization
collaborating centre for prevention of blindness. We also receive
funds under National Blindness Eradication Program and similar state
government programs. But these funds are not continuous in nature
and often we have to wait for a long period for these funds to be
released after delivering the care. Hence we have decided to plan our
internal resources such that our programs can be sustained even in the
absence of any external funding.
Q 6: Do you have plans to expand the operations of AECS to new
places?
Yes, we have been for a long time planning to open a branch in Andhra
Pradesh. I am glad that now we are steadily moving in that direction.
We will soon open a tertiary care eye hospital in Tirupathi.
3
As a Chief Medical Officer, I drew tremendous work
satisfaction. Once I received the charge as chairman, I
could not devote my time to treat patients as much as I
could do as a CMO. But then I realized that this position
gives me an opportunity to standardize the best practices
across the Aravind system and replicate at many places,
what I was being done in one hospital earlier.
Q 3: Aravind Eye Care System is not only known for
its clinical excellence but also for its best
organizational practices. Can you please explain to
us about 'Aravind Model' of delivering ophthalmic
services?
When we started Aravind, nobody knew us around. We
had to slowly build it up. We did not give any paper
advertisements; it was considered purely unethical. At
Aravind we treat all patients belonging to lower, middle
and upper classes equally. If we take good care and
deliver good services to them, they go and talk positively
in community. That's how people got to know Aravind.
Community is very well interconnected and the word-ofmouth
publicity help institutions grow on a long run. As of
2012, Aravind has treated nearly 3.2million patients and
performed 4 million surgeries, the majority of them being
cheap or free making it the world's largest eye care
service group. The hallmarks of Aravind model are 'quality
care', 'productivity', 'empathy' and 'affordability'. A core
principle of Aravind system is that the hospital must
provide services to the rich and poor alike, yet be
financially self-supporting. The principle is achieved
through high quality, large volume care and wellorganized
systems. Regarding quality of care we usually
do not show any difference. We stress on maintaining
same levels of efficiency and hygiene for all patients. We
rotate the doctors and staff between free and paid wards
in order to eliminate the difference between paid and
non-paid patients. We trained local youth with plus two
education as ophthalmic assistants and they play a crucial
role in optimizing the clinical work efficiency of the
doctors. Over the years we have developed a robust outreach
system where in doctors reach out to remote
villages to conduct eye camps sponsored by various
organizations like SatyaSai Trust, Lions club International,
Rotary international etc. The sponsoring organizations
take care of the costs of camp while Aravind does the
surgeries free of cost. It takes us close to people,
overcoming the barriers of accessibility and affordability.
Initially we conducted out-reach programs and maintained satellite
clinics in the adjacent areas of Madurai. Once the Madurai hospital
was stabilized, we converted some of the satellite centers into regular
hospitals. One particular example I would like to quote is Theni.
Inaugurated in 1985, Aravind -Theni is the first satellite hospital of
Aravind Eye Care System. Now it has facilities to accommodate 123
free and 40 paying patients. The hospital is outfitted with the latest
equipment, including Phaco and YAG lasers for cataract and minor eye
surgeries. The hospital provides preventive, rehabilitative and
promotive services through comprehensive eye care services through
a unique project launched with support from Sight Savers. Aravind-
Theni also contributes to the development of eye care delivery by
serving as a tangible model, for the delivery of rural hospital services,
to visiting eye care workers from around the world. Aravind-Theni
handled 213,275 outpatient visits and performed 12,100 surgeries
“
It is important to set out the
organizational values. It is also important to
choose those employees who have the
abilities, enthusiasm and aptitude that
synchronize with the institutional values.
You need strategies to retain the employees
and to develop them.
We prefer people from local areas while recruiting supporting staff. It
keeps us connected to the local communities. We selectively pick
people from the applications we receive. We have some unique ways
of assessing applicants, like how important the job is for their family
economically, how responsible they are, how well they can
communicate with people etc., in addition to their educational
qualifications. After recruiting, we train them according to our needs.
We developed salary systems in such a way that they start earning
right from the day one of their training and start saving some of their
income for their future needs. It improved the rate of retention.
Q 5: Aravind does a lot of free surgeries. How are you managing
the finances? Is this system sustainable?
Yes, it is sustainable. As I have told you, we have two kinds of patients;
“
Q 7: With the chain of hospitals, can we consider
Aravind Eye Care System as a corporate system?
Hmm, we don't see it is a corporate set up. I rather
consider it a cooperative set up with some of the
patients cross subsidizing the payments for others. Yes,
we do maintain the efficiency, productivity and
sophistication that we see in a corporate hospital but
the financial models are different. We do not operate
under the principle of profit maximization. Another
difference between corporate and AECS is we do not
incentivize productivity. Corporates give incentives to
employees based on their performance. They gauze
performance with the number of patients admitted,
number of surgeries done etc. We don't do it here in
Aravind. If we incentivize their work, whole dynamics
will change. We believe that everybody should be able
to do what they are capable of.
Q 8: How are you developing your future leaders?
All the leaders of Aravind come from inside. We usually
do not import leaders from outside. We nurture the
talents, identify the deficiencies and train them to
discharge their duties to the best of their abilities. 95%
of our clinical as well as supporting staff are those who
come for training like PGs, nursing trainees etc. We
retain those who show enthusiasm to work with us and
possess the aptitude that AECS requires. Once into the
system, they learn the skills and values that have been
established and passed on through generations.
Q 9: What are your suggestions to organizations
that are engaged in preventive and out-reach
activities?
It is important to set out the organizational values. It is
also important to choose those employees who have the
abilities, enthusiasm and aptitude that synchronize with
the institutional values. You need strategies to retain
the employees and to develop them. Delegate non
clinical duties to non-clinical personnel and optimize the
clinical performance of clinicians. It is important to
organize good number of out-reach programs, but it is
more important to deliver good care to the patients who
visit your institution. Tap available external resources
but don't depend entirely upon them, plan your own
internal resources to sustain your programs.
Q 10: What is your message to the young graduates passing out
of medical and dental colleges?
Be prepared for a tough journey ahead. Be passionate about your work
and be empathetic with the patients. Don't look for quick results, they
are not often long lasting. Instead, work steadily and calmly with long
term strategies.
Thank you sir.
It is indeed a pleasure and honour visiting your campus. I am sure there
is a bright future for Sri Vishnu Educational Society. Best wishes on my
personal behalf and on behalf of AECS to the students, staff and
management of SVES.

Mr. A.L.Kishore, Chief Editor, Dr Mrunalini
Sasanka, Guest Editor & Student lead Mr. N
Rakesh Kumar (ECE) had the wonderful
opportunity to interact with Mr Sumeet Rajpal.
Excerpts of the 'FACE to FACE” is given below
Could you please tell us your journey from a Graduate
student @ BIT to Sr. Vice President at Bank of America
Merrill Lynch?
Everybody starts their career more or less as an individual
contributor. Slowly he evolves into a leader. The difference
between an individual contributor and leader is that as an
individual contributor you are responsible for the work you do
whereas as a lead you have to provide leadership for a team.
That becomes the next stage of your evolution. Third stage is
where you become a manager who has to manage and take
responsibility for being efficient in completing the task with the
resources in hand. The fourth stage is where you become
'manager of manager' and then 'manager of manager of
manager' and so on. The most important aspect is that you have
to understand the role you are playing. Then you have to figure
out how to become perfect in the role you are assigned. It's very
important that, as you are into those four different stages, you
define for yourself a core set of values and as you move from one
role to another those core set of values keep accumulating. For
example, take the case of Nelson Mandela, the value system he
followed was that there shall be no discrimination based on
color, creed, race, etc. Same is the case with Mahatma Gandhi
or Narendra Modi, they have their own core values like integrity,
honesty, etc which they always believed in. The core values at
times tend to cause uneasiness to lot of people around you. In
my own case, one of the core values is about people that you
work with. They are extremely important at times even more so
than yourself. Secondly, you can chase money but at the end of
the day money should be seen more as an outcome than a goal.
Another aspect is the ability to take risk at the right time. Taking
risks has a finite probability of failure. But one should not be
scared of failures. Because most of the times failures are
nothing but the lessons for future.
The other important aspect is the personal change
management. Any change should be well-planned and thought
of. The perfect example for the change is that what we witness
during different stages of human life cycle. Most of time people
know what's going to change. But they never plan and think
about its execution. All great people / organizations (be it
Microsoft, Apple, etc) realize this aspect of life. Just like them
we also need to anticipate the change and improve the skill set
which defines our worth. Just like Microsoft has a battery of
engineers taking the product (like Windows OS) from one level
to another, we have to use all the resources around us so that we
are better equipped to face the future. This should be
supplemented with pursuing higher education to gain enough
knowledge.
In the first few years of my professional life as an individual
contributor, I was extremely focused on what I have to achieve.
Time was no bar for me. I used to work for 16 hours a day. That
initial hard work helped me to do well for the rest of my life.
Also at this juncture, I didn't have any coach to guide me on what
should I be doing. I did what my peers were doing, by observing
them e.g. pursuing MBA and then specializing in Marketing. At
that point of time, the decisions were not consciously taken but
more or less led by what my friends were doing.
The present generation has a lot of resources like Internet,
Social media and forums from which they can take conscious
decisions. But I really doubt this generation is using it
effectively.
In general students coming from the engineering college have
three options – Career in Education (Teaching), working for an
Organization or becoming an entrepreneur. To be an
entrepreneur, one should have a bright business idea, know
how to create a business and have the ability to take risk.
Once you become a manager we really need an external help
from the ecosystem you work in, mentor or a coach, even from
parents, etc. When we don't get that help, we start working on
our task by trial and error. Trying and failing will ultimately
result in quality learning. Most of the times, as a manager, I
learnt everything from failures in a number of things that I tried.
. Post 5 years of working as a Manager, I realized that delegating
and balancing the work properly between you and your team is
important for efficient task execution. This stage of my
professional life made me realize how important it is for a
manager to have a coach or mentor who helps to learn things
quickly. Till this point of time, I was more of a manager than a
leader.
But later on as 'manager of manager', you are expected to be a
leader. The difference between manager and a leader is the
manager would be purpose-led and the leader would be
people-led. In this role I started focusing on coaching, guiding,
making sure the people under me didn't commit the same
mistakes which I had committed as a manager, etc. Also as a
leader, I began to do things beyond the scope of my job by taking
up several new initiatives that would positively affect more
people in addition to my immediate teams .
As far as the roles I was in, I was a management consultant with
KPMG for some years, then I decided to move into IT for couple
of years and then jumped into to become an entrepreneur (year
2000) where me and my boss worked on an idea (similar to
PayTM model). But we backed off because we realized that our
idea was way ahead of its time. After that I went to IT and started
working on my specializations viz. payments and cryptography
and then I decided to step into Global Markets which was in
2004. I have been in this field for more than 12 years now and
have developed a reasonable level of expertise in the subject .
The areas of your expertise deal with a lot of people.
How challenging is that, considering the diverse nature
of the people you deal with?
It's challenging. That's the need of the hour. It's like a symphony
where we have hundred people playing different instruments.
Even though we are extremely good players, we have to play in
synchronization with the team, otherwise, we may be checked
out of the symphony. Being a team player, we have to adjust and
play along with the team, living up to the core values.
What according to you is essential in ready to be
employees? Where do you think they are lagging?
For entry level employees, it is important to have thirst for
knowledge and passion for the work. One should invest time and
effort in learning and building specialization by working across
depth and breadth of the subject (T model). In addition to that,
asking questions and coming up with innovative solutions is

ISSUE 14 JANUARY 2017
essential. Understanding the bigger picture of
the task and bringing own vision is always
highly encouraged.
What would be your message to the
engineering students who aspire to make
a career in the banking industry?
Banking is a huge domain. Global Markets,
Wholesale banking, Retail banking, Corporate
and Investment banking, Wealth management,
Credit cards, Loans, etc. are various lines of
businesses in banking.
Banking is significantly driven by technology in
the present times. Technical aspects can be
handled by people with strong technical ability
even if they do not have good business
knowledge. Then there is operations part of
banking which deals with all sorts of back-end
processes. This area is more suited to people
who are very sound in the business acumen.
The third aspect is research and analytics in
banking. This can be handled by people with
good technical skills but it does require the
business acumen as well. The fourth area is the
front-end processes which is more related to
the traders and marketing executives. This area
is apt for the people who have gone through
management education. People could choose
from these four streams. But within these
streams again one needs to decide the area that
they want to be in as each one requires a
different set of skills and has a different career
path. Technical banking is quite well paying and
possesses a lot of scope for career growth as
banking is led by technology to a large extent
today.
Could you please tell us the key
differentiators that made BOA, a global
lead in the banking industry across the
world?
I will not be able to share with you some of the
confidential aspects of our Bank operations.
But I can say that product differentiation
(bouquet of services we offer) is one important
factor for BOA. The other differentiators being
using state of the art technology, scale and size
of the Bank. It's not just about what you do but
also how you do (for eg customer service) is the
key. Also, our emphasis is more on customer
service and how quick or fast you respond to the
customer needs or requests. The history of
BOA having been the pioneer in innovating new
products like Credit Cards, ATM etc also drives
the people of this organization to take pride and
look into future.
In your opinion, what is the effect of
demonetization on India in the Long and short
run?
In the short run, it is pain. Any change, in
general, hurts in the beginning. For example,
when we change the residence from one city to
another, for the first few days it's a little difficult
to get adjusted with the new set up. But
eventually, everything settles down.
In the same way, Demonetization is definitely
going to have a significant impact on India. A
decision of this kind carries the pain of
transition. But with this measure by the
government of India, I think India is going to
become a society in the long term with a
certainly better GDP, cleaner ethics, and a
cleaner economy. Also, in the long-term, a large
number of benefits like the spread of cashless
transaction culture, growth of the formal
economy, registration of new income tax
payers, etc will happen.
How hard or easy to witness India as a
cashless / digital economy?
India will never become cashless. The
important part is killing corruption. I cannot
answer whether it is hard or easy because for
me, as a person living in Hyderabad it is easy.
But, for a person living in suburban area or a
village, it is difficult.
How important is it to enjoy and have fun
at work in the corporate world full of
hustle?
It is extremely important because you end up
spending the major part of your day at work.
Enjoy at the work the same way you enjoy at
home because that's where you spend most of
your time, at work. Having said that, there
should be enjoyment but not at the cost of
compromising on your key purpose. I led the
employee engagement initiative for the Market
technology function till a year back. We have all
avenues like outings, team buildings, potluck
lunches, big team outings, family outings,
community services, games and sports
competition, fun on the floor etc.
It is very common today to see people
dissatisfied with their work. What care
should one take while selecting a job?
A lot of times you may not even know what a
company is like from inside. How do you know
that? Unless you know people who work there,
you have to depend on the data points that are
shown by various surveys. The other important
aspect is that how desperate you are for a job. If
you are badly in need of a job and you don't have
a choice then you would go and join at some
place. The other thing that people need to
realize is that the change is always within you.
We always tend to blame the world around us
but the change starts with us. Figure out what
you can do and make that change.
What is the most important aspect every
HR expert should possess?
The ability to empathize with people and have
people's interest is foremost, keeping in view
the organization that you work in. That's the way
I look at it!
One of the key characteristic of your
marvelous career is leadership. What traits
must a leader possess in the 21st century
organizations?
The most important thing is that you should be
an expert in your subject / function. You should
keep improving the required skill set and
updating the knowledge in your area of
influence. The second aspect is the ability to
work in teams. Most of the jobs today demand
multitasking and multidisciplinary approach.
So you cannot do it all alone. The third trait that
is indispensible with the future leaders is being
innovative. Innovative leadership is the key to
accelerate the pace of change in today's global
business environment. The future leaders
should move beyond the focus on traditional
products and services categories to pioneer
innovations in business processes, distribution,
value chains, business models, and even the
functions of management.
Where you draw your inspirations from?
I have multiple sources of inspiration. My
inspiration comes in from my organization,
family environment, books and talks by global
leaders. I take inspiration from the best
practices and experiences.
What is your Philosophy of life? Any
Favorite quotes?
My philosophy of life is:
Building a Core value system
Developing ability to make change
Collaboration in teams
Realization of what to do at any point of time.
I generally don't follow any quotes, but follow
some people closely like Jim Collins, Stephen
Covey, etc.
A QUARTERLY NEWS PUBLICATION FROM SRI VISHNU EDUCATIONAL SOCIETY
GOAL POST
C H A S I N G T H E D R E A M S
It feels exciting to write as an alumnus, when many of
you can always drop by or give me a call and I can talk
all about it. Oh, don't scratch your heads, read on my
friends.
I was a fresh graduate from BVRIT Narsapur with an oncampus
job and enjoying my vacation in late July
before it would be time to join the MNC…Yeah! You
know what? I am a Biomedical Engineer, but hey I made
it to India's top IT firm…so why not? I was pretty neutral
about the decision apart from my initial excitement and
plans for the next two years running in my head. Soon,
all my planning went kaput, that's lif e, and
opportunities are thrown at you at unexpected
intervals. I got to know that Prof. Alan Rux, heading
Assistive Technology Laboratory at University of
Massachusetts Lowell was visiting BVRIT to setup a
similar center in our campus.
When the professor arrived in Hyderabad, even before
we met I got a chance to talk to him over the phone; he
wanted to see my final year project “Smart Hat”. In the
final year, I was determined to work on a project that has
direct application in Biomedical Engineering. I wanted
to attempt something distinctive that will set us apart.
“Smart Hat” was an assistive device to help children
with Spina Bifida, a rare nervous disorder. Immediately,
while I was still waiting on my offer letter, I got a chance
to build the Assistive Technology Lab at BVRIT in
collaboration with the international team from UMass
Lowell. I thought what better opportunity than this; I
may as well get some experience interestingly enough
in my own field.
The next one year was a very exciting ride, visiting
rehabilitation institutions, meeting clients, organizing
student projects, making them work, participating in
competitions and winning accolades but you know
what, in this process I had ditched my
MNC offer letter
and a higher paying job.
I received
to pursue MS
a l r e a d y
attempted GRE
and got a good
score at the end
of my second
engineering. But
convincing my
parents to let me
move to the US
was a daunting
task. It
took two people from UMass Lowell, Prof. Rux
and his associate Mrs. Senait Hailesselassie's
assurance to let them agree. Soon after, I was following
my dreams to pursue higher education in the US, to
explore, to be independent and to be someone.
My first steps in the US were set in Boston. Prof. Rux and
Senait patiently explained every silly question that had
occurred to me. Boston is a world leader in innovation
and entrepreneurship and is a university hub, always
vibrant with young students all over the place studying
at top notch universities including Harvard and MIT.
The city will always remain close to me. I was offered
full Research Assistantship at the Centre for
Electromagnetic Materials and Optical Systems that
covered my tuition and also paid
the monthly
stipend. I got to
happening at the
University level in
the US blew my
setting, most of the
technology. In our
laboratory we built
optical sensors to
mea
sure blood pressure,
acoustic pressure during explosions in a war
field and their damages, temperature sensors to
measure the change in temperature during machining
and also biosensors to detect bacteria and virus.
All along I had my share of adventures, right from white
water rafting in the Hudson to random plans of night
trekking and star gazing in the middle of a forest; zip
lining in Colorado to sky diving in Massachusetts. I
made friends and memories that will remain forever.
Also contradictory to the trend of extending the study
period, I had taken extra credits to finish Masters in
three semesters so I can get to work soon. With the
history of most of my seniors switching to software jobs
after finishing masters in Biomedical Engineering, I did
not want to follow them. I was kind of adamant to work in
my own area of interest. At the time, prospects for an
international student to get a full time job in such
uncommon fields were not very encouraging. But
immediately after I finished, I started working for a
star tup called Immunotrex Biologics under
Massachusetts Medical Device Development Center,
soon enough I got another opportunity and had to
relocate from Massachusetts to Dallas, Texas. It was
time to leave my mentors and start a new life in a new
city and with a new job. Medisend International gave
me an opportunity to train biomedical professionals
working in the hospitals all over the world. We also
designed training programs for the American Veterans.
I had an amazing experience and loved working with
the coolest colleagues who would often try to pull my
leg, I was the only female in the technical division
hence was also pampered a little. I was really happy
and content that I could go and get what I believed in,
life was easy and smooth, but I never belonged there.
“Home Is Where Your Heart Is”, for me it was India. In
India it was my alma mater. Now, when I look back
everything becomes clear, I followed the dots which I
never knew made a full circle. As Prof. Rux says, “Keep
doing things, you will automatically be guided”.

I am back on my home ground with many wonderful memories to recollect and amazing
people to talk about. I am doing what many do not have the privilege to, working in your
own field, serving the underserved, directly through technology and innovation that
promotes inclusiveness and the growth of the nation.
Some people still judge the book by its cover, with a young team like us, they have hard
time believing the nature and future of work taken up at the Assistive Technology Lab, it
takes them a visit to accept it. I feel one must also believe in the power of inexperience,
because then one does not really set bounds for oneself and before you have the time to
comprehend you are already head on with the problem. Everyday then becomes
interesting but for experience leads to a lot of presumptions and caution. As is the law of
nature everybody becomes experienced, let it be through your own and learn from
A RECAPITULATION
The Baja SAE Competition originated at the University of South
Carolina in 1976, under the supervision of Dr. J. F. Stevens.
Baja SAE is an intercollegiate engineering design competition
for undergraduate and graduate engineering students. The
objective of the competition is to simulate real-world
engineering design projects and their related challenges. Each
team is competing to have its design accepted for manufacture
by a fictitious firm. The students must function as a team to
design, build, test, promote and compete with a vehicle within
the limits of the rules, also to generate financial support for
their project and manage their educational priorities.
Each team's goal is to design and build a prototype of a rugged,
single seat, off-road recreational vehicle intended for sale
to the non-professional weekend off-road enthusiast. The
vehicle must be safe, easily transported, easily maintained
and fun to drive. It should be able to negotiate rough terrain
without damage. As of 2010, the SAE Baja Series consisted of
three competitions, though in the past there had been as many
as seven sanctioned events. A Baja SAE competition event
happens for three to four days.
ZIBA RACERS
AN EMERGING YOUNG TEAM:
Team ZIBA Racers started its journey in 2015 with a team of 14
enthusiastic girls exhibiting good teamwork and perseverance
which helped the team clear the virtual round in the very first
attempt. This was the only women's team from SOUTH INDIA. It
is always a herculean task for any team to clear the virtual
round in its first attempt. ZIBA Racers achieved it by their
unswerving determination to win. The team achieved this feat
by competing with 395 teams and moved to dynamic round.
In the dynamic round, the team successfully finished the
technical inspection, acceleration test, brake test and
finally stood in an endurance test. Though it was a new
entrant, it gave tough completion to the other teams. The
result was that the team was successful in getting a decent
score. This story is all about the ZIBA Racers last year's
scintillating performance in their debut.
ZIBA RACERS – THIS YEAR
Inspired by last year's great attempt, the team is going ahead
with great energies in order to outsmart other teams. In its
attempt this year, the team has participated in the virtual
round which has been held at Chirst University, Bengaluru. 415
teams from all over India have attended it. The teams are from
teams NITs, IITs and BITS colleges.
Out of 415 teams, there are 3 women teams and ZIBA Racers is
ranked 2nd among all women teams in India. The team has got
70th rank in its virtual round. ZIBA Racers have bagged 1st
place in Andhra Pradesh and has got 3rd rank in both Andhra
Pradesh and Telangana.
This is the second time that Team ZIBA Racers is participating
in SAE BAJA 2017. From the last year's experience, they have
learned many new techniques and this time they have come up
with new design learning lessons from its mistakes. This year
TEAM Ziba Racers has 18 girls who are going to participate in
SAE Baja representing the whole South India.
Now the vehicle is under manufacturing process and the team is
working restlessly day and night to build its car with a new
avatar of perfection. From the starting of sketch of design,
to the end of body framework everything is being handled by
these 18 girls. More than half of the vehicle has been finished
and will be ready for the competition by January 2017. The
approaching February will be the memorable month for the team
since it is participating in BAJA SAE 2017 for 6 continuous
days at Phitampur Indore.

terms of placements. The account opened with 2
students placed in John Deere (first for BVRITH)
and followed by 109 students selected by
Capgemini (compared to 37 for 2016) and 71
students selected by Tech Mahindra (32 in 2016
Daan Utsav (earlier called the Joy of Giving Week) is India's 'festival of giving'. Launched in 2009,
the festival is celebrated every year – commencing on Gandhi Jayanti – from October 2 to 8. From
auto rickshaw drivers to CEOs, school children to celebrities, homemakers to opinion leaders
and media personnel, millions of people from all walks of life come together during this week to
give their time, money, resources, or skills back to society.
As a part of DAANUTSAV 2016,
Enlightening lives, the student
organization of BVRIT N organized
'Rice bucket challenge' and 'Clothes
for a cause' at BVRIT to raise funds to
help the needy. Our ten member
team visited and donated Rice and
Clothes to the children of Saibaba
Blind School and members of Old
age home at Narsapur on 2nd
October 2016.
A talent show was organised that
provided a platform to these children
to showcase their skills in singing,
dancing etc.
This opportunity made our team
u n d e r s t a n d t h a t w i t h l i t t l e
encouragement, these kids, being
smart and sensitive can surpass any
o t h e r k i d w h e n i t c o m e s t o
competing with the world, challenge
themselves and grow up to be
responsible, honorable citizens that
the world can be proud of.
By taking this festival as an inspiration our SBSP college principal D.V. SUBBA RAO garu
organized 'DAAN UTSAV 'program on October 5th, 2016. On this occasion, our college
distributed bread and fruits to patients in Bhimavaram government hospital by using of 'SUH'
FUND. Our campus dignitaries appreciated everyone for conducting this programme.
The trip to the OLD age hoe reminded
me of the reality of what true life is!
We are always cribbing about what life is not offering us although we have everything!
But……somewhere, a mother sits with her son's photo in her hands, hoping that he has a good life
someday he finds time to come and meet her and wipe her tears.
“Thus we have learnt a very great value from this trip and I hope we all
will respect our elders and old people and make them feel
comfortable and just not simply neglect them as they are the ones who
can guide us better in our life and they will be our well-wishers
throughout our life! "
