LEAD FROM WITHIN
In a previous newsletter just after the Christmas break, I expressed my views on the topic of New Year's
resolutions and targets. In general I am opposed to such pronouncements if they are not made reference to
over time.
As a great believer in constantly evaluating what we are doing and where we are going, I believe in some
way that instead of setting goals and targets we should set ourselves a self-fulfilling prophecy.
When we expect something to happen we change our behaviour; when we change our behaviour to make
something happen it is then much more likely that it will happen. In short, if we expect ourselves to succeed
then we probably will.
If we expect ourselves to be the best, we probably will be the best; if we expect ourselves to improve we
probably will improve. We must believe that what we are capable of creating is the best or we will not
achieve the best.
At this time of year, as thoughts inevitably turn to the examination series that follows the Easter break, other
year groups will be preparing themselves to move up into an older year group, to inevitably lead them to their
ultimate goals at the end of Year 11 and 13.
We must all think like leaders in order to achieve our ambition. As leaders, we tend to live up or live down to
our expectations of ourselves. We generate these expectations and develop our self-fulfilling prophecies. If
you have low expectations, you will experience low fulfilment, it is that simple. Have positive, have good, have
high expectations of yourself over the coming weeks and see the positive, good, high impact such
expectations could have on your life.
When we believe in ourselves we are strongly influenced by such feelings and live up to them; a self-fulfilling
prophecy of the best kind.
Lead from within, leaders act in a manner that is consistent with their expectations.
SUPRA EXTRA SIXTH FORM
SIXTH FORM
Charlie Aldridge and Jess Hooker are the latest students in Sixth
Form to receive their Vinspired V50 certificates. This means that
between them they have given 100 hours of their own time to the
school and local community.
Charlie is a familiar face helping and inspiring students at Open
Evenings, umpiring netball matches as well as helping in History
lessons.
Jess is a young leader for local community groups, as well as
being a big presence at Open Evenings promoting her favourite
subjects.
We congratulate you both on your fantastic achievement.
INTERHOUSE KICKS OFF
OUTWARD BOUND CHALLENGES
Last week’s Sixth Form assembly was delivered by two Year 13
students, Shay Newcomb and Will Stirland.
They spoke about their fantastic experiences on an Outward
Bound residential last summer. Fully funded, it was paid for
through the Sir Francis Chichester bursary. Students heard
about the challenges that Shay and Will encountered on the
course, from spending 12 hours alone up a mountain, to
planning and completing a four-day expedition with six other
people from all over the world.
Shay and Will went through a competitive panel interview
process to gain places on the course and this year Shay will
be a member of the interview panel himself!
We look forward to other Sixth Form students applying for such
a great opportunity this year.
SPORT & PE
Inter-house rivalry was on again in PE lessons this week. It kicked off with Year 10 boys’ football which saw
excellent participation from all the students involved.
Despite some hard fought group games, Ali won their group in L band with Einstein winning T band. This set up
a great final which ended in penalties. After nine consecutive penalties being scored, Einstein slotted home to
win.
The final results were:
House
Position
Einstein 1
Ali 2
Drake 3
Nightingale 4
Christie 5
Beethoven 6
Look out for Years 7-9 netball and football
inter-house coming up in the next few
weeks.
SPORT & PE
CHRISTOW
Year 8 netball team had their end of season tournament last Thursday at Torquay Girls Grammar School. We
played five matches in total, winning three of them against Trinity School, Paignton
Community & Sports Academy and Spires College.
Team captain Charlotte Gale organised the players from the beginning as well as
demonstrating star shooting throughout the tournament. Centre Heidi Smart showed
excellent skills along with Gracie Terry in attack. All the girls played superbly as a team
throughout the games.
Well done all; Miss Hardingham is very proud of you all.
Look out in next week’s Newsletter for news of the Year 10 team who have their Regional
competition coming up.
