Interview Enzo Bertolini
(Group CIO Ferrero)
Transkript
Interviewer:
“So first, I am just gonna ask you your name and your role in the company that you work for.“
Enzo Bertolini:
“So my name is Enzo Bertolini, and I am working for Ferrero, the candies and the confectionery producers. And I
am appointed to the role of the Group CIO.“
Interviewer:
“So in your role as Group CIO at Ferrero, you were recently facing a business challenge. Um, can you describe
that business challenge to us?”
Enzo Bertolini:
“Yeah, sure. So, uh, the major business problem that we are facing, uh, starting from the 2000s to now is exactly
what, many other companies are facing. And so is the way in which, uh, we can compete in a global scale, in
order to able to reach, for instance, uh, the emerging market from one side, uh, or to came out of, our niche cash
cow countries and, uh, and other business challenge. Very, very interesting for us is to transform us from a, a
local niche of products in, in a more global brand, in all over the world.”
Interviewer:
“Yeah, Ferrero, right. Try to say Ferrero. So, as a CIO, you described, some of the business challenges that
Ferrero was facing. Um, but how was Accenture able to help you with those business challenges?”
Enzo Bertolini:
“So, related to this business challenge, uh, the company started a program - a huge program in 2003 in order to
transform also the organization and the information system that support processes in the group. And, so, uh,
Ferrero, um… Sorry. Uh, Accenture became a partner of us during this long journey that starting in 2003 and is
not, uh, deal, uh, finished.”
Interviewer:
“And so that… We have been partnering with you for a long time. Hopefully this is a good relationship? Can you
describe our teaming?”
Enzo Bertolini:
“Yes, the relationship, between Ferrero and Accenture is quite good. Uh, we start from the information system
point of view. Recently we sign a BPO, outsourcing a contractor related to the order… Um, sorry. To the…
Ahhh, sorry.”
Interviewer: “No, no, don’t worry, it’s OK.”
Enzo Bertolini: “No, no problem.”
Interviewer: “Uh, and so the relationship between Accenture and Ferrero…”
Enzo Bertolini:
“So the relationship between, uh, Ferrero and Accenture are very good. Uh, so we start from the information
technology sides. And then more recently, we arrive to, uh, sign some BPO contractor in the final sector, so.
And, uh, so we are trying to perform together, with the mutual satisfaction, these type of things.”
Interviewer: “What’s that iron division for this program?”
Enzo Bertolini:
“So we are, um… Uh, we plan to finish the programs next year, so in 2011. Uh, now we have, uh, reached a
huge coverage of, uh, modern 85 percent of the major processes in the group. Uh, this program - the name of this
program is, um, GEA. That means Global Enterprise Architectures. And because it is something, uh, we want to
transform our company from a confederation of system, hmmm, company into, uh, a real multinational group,
trying to make the best processes that we perform in, in such countries and some countries and to extend this
best practices also through the groups and it became, uh, more efficient in term of, uh, processes - business
processes at least. They are supporting by, uh, the information system, uh, at a glance.”
Interviewer: “So your key transformation is a very long journey.”
Enzo Bertolini: “Yeah.”
Interviewer:
“Right? And you have been working on this since 2003. Are there some key milestones, achievements or
business value that you have seen so far?”
Enzo Bertolini:
“Absolutely, yes. Uh, and it is also something that we try to achieve, uh, in order to demonstrate, uh, you know,
not only to the clients but also, uh, to the business managers that we are, hmmm, performing the, the good, uh,
the right way, you know? Term of, uh, supporting, uh, as better as possible our ability to compete in the market.
For instance, uh, so we did, very huge, uh, planning, starting from the demo side to the proaction planning. And,
uh, and this is something that changed etc. in a very deep way - the, the attitude and also the habits that the
company have, uh, to relation to the major relationship between the, the demo and the market side to the
factories. And this is something that, um, witness the, the improvement that, uh, that we have done in these
years because recently we have some trouble, trouble on the, on the raw material markets and that we are,
hmmm… We were able to manage in a good way this problem of shortage, uh, to assigning the right partners to
the right markets. And it’s something that in the past was, uh, absolutely impossible to do it in this, uh, efficient
way.”
Interviewer:
“Can you talk about your SAP? Um, what has Accenture been able to offer you, to help you maximize SAP to, to
achieve success…?”
Enzo Bertolini: “Yeah.”
Interviewer: “…business value?”
Enzo Bertolini:
“So the, the major, uh, the major contribute by Accenture to our program is to, uh, be able to find the right
resources. And especially in, uh, in the international, uh, scale. And, uh, what, uh, normally some other
company, company are not able to follow us. Also, uh, brand of company. But when we need to achieve some,
uh, far countries let me say - rom, uh, from, from Italy. Uh, so, ability of Accenture to mobilize really an
international group of people is, uh, what they bring is a value for us.”
Interviewer:
“Um, let’s talk, uh, a little bit about some of the achievements to date, your most products. So, as Ferrero CIO,
what are you most proud of with this transformation program?”
Enzo Bertolini:
“So we are real proud to be able to sustain the effort of, uh, of the company. To be faster. to be more aggressive,
uh, on achieving the, the business goals. So for instance, uh, recently we, we build up from scratch from the
green fields and new plants in Russia to 100 kilometers east of Moscow. And so we were able to build up, uh,
starting from the green - the white field, because there is just no, there… To the production in, in the 18 month or
including the information system up. Uh, and the information system was something that’s, uh, help us to, to
manage the first phases of, uh, the construction, so. Business, hmmm… What, uh, we are proud, uh, to be able
to surprise to our business colleagues.”
Interviewer:
“OK. So you keep forgetting to give Ferrero credit. Um, and so it, you know, to… Yeah. Um, so just either try to
remember Ferrero…”
Enzo Bertolini: “Yeah.”
Interviewer:
“Um, so we… Uh, so you talked about being in, um, into this journey and almost there, right? You are, you are
getting very close to the end. What do you see happening next? I mean, what’s next over the next year and a half
that you are looking forward to achieving through, um, through the next steps?”
Enzo Bertolini:
“So the next steps, uh, probably is more related to, uh, going deeper in managing the information in term of
business, or to be able to, hmmm, support, uh, more, um, lighter and faster processes in term of, uh, ability to,
uh, the performance of the company.”
Interviewer:
“And when you are talking about some business intelligence and performance, are you talking about focusing on,
uh, what they are calling “Enterprise Performance Management”?”
Enzo Bertolini:
“Yes, performance side, absolutely yes. From the other side, Ferrero uses very sensitive, uh, to the—as all the
CPG, uh, Consumer Package Goods, uh, industry to the same sectors, to understand how we are performing
since, uh, across countries. To understand the profitability of the products and the profitability of the customers,
and so on. And so in the, uh… And we, we work hard, uh, to be able to, uh, support the major transactional
processes. And now is a time to harvest the, uh, opportunity to go in deep and to use more intelligence to support
the business, uh, this way.”
Interviewer:
“And you talked about this being, you know, a global implementation process… Um, so from a, a global
implementation perspective, uh, was Accenture able to pull the resources you needed - in the locations you
needed - um, to support you?”
Enzo Bertolini:
“Uh, and so, in term of, uh, mobilizing the right resources and, uh, and the right places and the right time, um…
Being able, uh, I can say that Accenture was able to satisfy the Ferrero needs. Sometimes it’s a matter of, uh,
bargaining a little bit on the price, so, on the, hmmm, on the ability to support exactly what we need. But, uh, I
can say that, uh, Accenture, hmmm, did a great job for us in this sense.”
Interviewer:
“And if you were, uh, had the opportunity to talk to one of our prospective clients, what would you say to them
about choosing Accenture to deliver their solution?”
Enzo Bertolini:
“So, uh, there is a suggestion to, uh, a prospect for Accenture. So my suggestion may be, um, to be, hmmm, to
have really focus on what exactly Accenture may deliver, uh, in terms of success, you know? Because we find,
uh, for our experience, this big success on the international scale may be some… Someone else, uh, may take
advantage of on, uh, some knowledge, some specific knowledge or some specific experience and so on. But
what I am sure that, uh, normally, uh, we are able to build up a, a constructive, uh, relationship between client
and, uh, suppliers. And this is an opportunity in the IT environment on the consultants business.
So we, we feel, hmmm… Really we find the partner in which we are able to trust mutually and, uh, in the, uh…
And like a, like a wedding, uh, or in the, in the good time and in the bad time. Sometimes we smile, sometimes
we cry. But together, we are able - we were able to bring, uh, forward the problems and, uh, ability for Ferrero.”
Interviewer:
“Do you think that Accenture has tried to deliver innovation to you or, or value to you that you weren’t able to
identify? Have we been able to, to bring something to the table to really help?”
Enzo Bertolini:
“Uh, yes, sometimes that happens. So for instance, we develop together some CRM, hmmm - together
Accenture and Ferrero in the specific, uh, sector with, uh, SAP. So we deliver and we improve, uh, the CRM, uh,
models - one of the first in the CPG industry, um, three or four years ago. From some other side, uh, we make
experience, hmmm, with Accenture of innovative, uh, way to scan, uh, the shelf in the supermarkets and so on.
Something interesting that may bring, uh, and add value to, to our business, uh, partners.”
Interviewer: “And what can we do better? What can Accenture do better for you?”
Enzo Bertolini:
“Oh, probably they support us in a very strong way in the manufacturers, uh, program. Uh, just last year, we are
facing, uh, we were facing a very tough program to start up for plans in, uh, in Italy together. And so that time, uh,
we are really, you know, in a tough time, because we absolutely, uh, want to avoid any business disruptions.
And, uh, managing production and, uh, supply chain, uh, processes with this volume and this big, uh, plans, was
really a nightmare. And, uh, finally, the program was successful and we deliver in time and, uh, more or less in
budget… well, near to the budget of… our programs.”
Interviewer:
“And something more to use internally with our client senior executives to just how to educate them on how we
can do a better job with our clients. Um, so, I mean, I am not saying. Just so you know where did that come from.
And we truly are interested in improving ourselves, um, to deliver to you. So if there are, um… If, if there were
one thing though that you would say, uh, to either Bill Green or to another client who said, “Well, what do you
think about Accenture,” what would you say?”
Enzo Bertolini: “Sorry, I don’t understood this.”
Interviewer:
“Um, just a… Just if you had like a moment with Bill Green to say, “Here, here is what I think about your
company, Accenture”.”
Enzo Bertolini: “Yeah.”
Interviewer: “What would you say?”
Enzo Bertolini:
“So, uh, I think it is a real professional company. Sometimes it’s, um, in my opinion a little bit, uh, too aggressive
in order to enlarge the scope and to try to catch, uh, new business, uh, in the business scenario they are
managing, so. And, um, it’s not my case, but, uh, I know by experience for in, in some other, um, activities and,
and business partner that, uh, sometimes there is also tendency to escalate, uh, the, the managerial, uh
hierarchies in term of influence the decisions now. That may be right from one side; maybe, uh, a little bit
disappointing for some other level, uh, in other occasion, uh, hmmm, opportunity in other times.”
Interviewer: “All right, I think we are good. Yeah, what, what, what do I need to re-do?”
Enzo Bertolini:
“So… Uh, the idea that the strongest point of Accenture is their ability to mobilize, uh, real professional teams
and, uh, to be able to go, uh, strive forward to the goal, of the business goal of the projects and their activities.
And this is the strongest point, uh, ability. Um, from the other side, that Accenture sometimes, um, may better
perform in terms of, uh, relationship. Uh, and so what I mean is that sometimes Accenture is very really, uh,
aggressive, uh, in terms of enlarging the scope, of, uh, their business and to, hmmm, find new opportunity, new
opportunities. Uh, sometimes this is absolutely understandable. But, uh, from some other, uh…well, some other
time, this is mismatching or is misleading in terms of, uh, relationship.”
Interviewer: “OK, actually…”
Enzo Bertolini: “It’s better?”
Interviewer:
“…if you can do a little more… Yeah, um, if you could say… Uh, repeat after me, and then fill in the blank? So,
“Accenture is helping Ferrero drive high performance, by…”
Enzo Bertolini: “Ferrero… Sorry.”
Interviewer: “Accenture…is helping Ferrero…drive high performance…”
Enzo Bertolini: “Hmmm. Uh, Accenture is, uh, helping Ferrero to drive high performance.
Interviewer: “ By…”
Enzo Bertolini: “…by…”
Interviewer: “How are, how are we doing that? How is Accenture helping to - Ferrero to drive high performance?
Enzo Bertolini:
“Um, hmmm. Accenture helps Ferrero to drive high performance, uh, uh… Helping us, uh, to be able to
deliver… “
