Seminar, hosted by Unespa, in the dynamic and exciting city of Madrid. The IIS Annual Seminar is
the must-attend gathering of senior insurance executives and academicians around the globe to exchange
knowledge and to gain new ideas, and we are happy to have so many of you in attendance.
The seminar program, with the theme Aftermath of the Financial Crisis, will address the critical issues
facing our industry as we recover from the global financial crisis, focusing on the solutions and opportunities
that will allow the industry to adapt and succeed. The IIS seminar is known for its top notch program, frank
discussions and open dialogue and we look forward to a great meeting here in Madrid. We also look forward to
networking with old and new colleagues while we enjoy the exuberant culture and many wonderful historic
sites that this city, and Spain, has to offer.

Insurance Hall of Fame winners, Dr. William C. Greenough, past Chairman and Chief Executive Officer,
TIAA-CREF, and Mr. Frank O’Halloran, CEO, QBE Insurance Group, as well as the recipient of the John
S. Bickley Founder’s Award Gold Medal for Excellence, Dr. Kailin Tuan, Professor Emeritus, Department
of Risk, Insurance & Healthcare Management, Fox School of Business, Temple University, for their outstanding
achievements. We will also honor Mrs. Pilar González de Frutos, President, Unespa, who has been awarded
the Commissioner General Award for her superlative support in organizing our meeting here in Madrid.

Insurance Hall of Fame description
The creation of the Insurance Hall of Fame, at the Griffith Foundation for Insurance Education in
1957, reflected the views of its founder, Dr. John S. Bickley, that the institution of insurance can gain
many benefits by honoring those individuals who have enhanced the ability of insurers to serve society.
By recognizing those individuals who have been responsible for innovation and leadership, the industry
encourages each new generation to higher levels of performance and devotion. At the same time, the
existence of the Insurance Hall of Fame is a reminder to the insurance public of the progress that has been
made in the ability of our industry to serve the security needs of the world’s community. In addition, it is
felt that having an Insurance Hall of Fame is an inspiration to students of insurance, as it conveys that this
is an industry which honors its major contributors.
In 1987 the International Insurance Society’s Board of Directors instituted a permanent home for the
Insurance Hall of Fame, thus establishing the Insurance Hall of Fame Museum and Gallery at The
University of Alabama. This facility presents documentation about the Laureates and artifacts from their
careers and is housed in the same building as the Gallery wherein the Laureates’ portraits are displayed.
Subsequently a collateral facility, The Claire and Joseph Smetana Gallery of the Insurance Hall of Fame
was established at St. Johns University‘s Manhattan campus in 2002. Here visitors can view biographies,
photos and videos which depict the illustrious achievements of the Laureates, as well as view a sampling
of portraits which are housed at the respective galleries on a rotating basis. It is of interest to note that over
200,000 individuals have visited The Insurance Hall of Fame since its creation.
For over 50 years, the Insurance Hall of Fame has produced a wondrous concordance between the
insurance industry and the academic community. The integrity of the election process is universally
recognized and testifies to the intent of the insurance community to elect only those individuals who are
truly worthy. The members of the International Insurance Society, representing virtually all nations across
the world, serve as the Electors responsible for selecting the Laureates each year.

Spain
Mrs. González de Frutos has served as President of Unespa, the Spanish Insurance Business
Association, since 2003. She is a graduate in Law from the Autonomous University in
Madrid, Class of 1979, and a State-Qualified Insurance Inspector. Between January,
1997, and November, 2002, Mrs. González de Frutos was Director-General for Insurance.
Some of the other responsibilities she has held in her career, always closely tied to the
insurance sector, include the position of Operations Director at the Insurance Compensation
Consortium. In addition, she is Vice-president of the Spanish Confederation of
Employers’ Organizations (CEOE), founded in 1977, which is the major representative institution of the
Spanish business community. She is also a member of the Advisor Board of CNMV, the Comisión Nacional
del Mercado de Valores, which supervises and inspects the Spanish Stock Markets and the activities of all
the participants in those markets.

KAILIN TUAN
Dr. Tuan initiated the first and by far the most successful effort to provide the actuarial,
managerial, and technical education required to develop a thriving insurance industry
and a sound social insurance system in the People’s Republic of China. In 1979,
recognizing that for more than a quarter century the insurance industry and the
education of insurance practitioners had been disrupted in China, Dr. Tuan resolved
to assist China’s redevelopment by initiating efforts on several fronts, including the
establishment of the university programs to teach the actuarial and insurance knowledge
and skills necessary for a modern economy. As a result of his vision, resourcefulness, diplomacy, and
persistency, these and related topics are taught in many of China’s universities. In addition, Dr. Tuan has
played a significant role in the development of programs that enhance contacts and the transfer of
knowledge between officials, academicians, insurance practitioners and others in the West and in China.
Finally, developments in China have inspired others in the region and as a consequence, actuarial, and
insurance education has spread rapidly to other countries. Dr. Tuan has engaged in a wide variety of activities
that have helped to build bridges between China and the West.

WILLIAM C. GREENOUGH

Dr. Greenough (1914-1989), who retired as Chairman and Chief Executive
Officer of TIAA-CREF in 1979 after 40 years at the company, is renowned
worldwide for creating the variable annuity, which transformed pension-fund
management. The then revolutionary concept of an annuity which would invest
in a diversified fund of common stocks, is now used worldwide in group and
individual variable annuities and insurance. For the insurance industry, the
concept made possible the addition of an entirely new class of pension and
insurance products and for millions of Americans it meant a more financially
secure retirement.
In 1952, the Teachers Insurance and Annuity Association of America (TIAA) established the first variable
annuity when it created the College Retirement Equities Fund (CREF), which today is the world’s largest
provider of variable annuities. TIAA-CREF is now the leading provider in the United States of retirement
financial services for individuals and institutions in the academic, research, medical and cultural fields.
Dr. Greenough’s invention has had a global influence on pension fund management and investment, and
the conclusions of his 1951 landmark economic study, “A New Approach to Retirement Income”, still
hold true today.
FRANK O’HALLORAN
Australia
Under the leadership of Mr. Frank O’Halloran, QBE has experienced immense
growth and is considered one of the greatest success stories in the insurance
industry around the world. O’Halloran was directly responsible for over 125
acquisitions by the QBE Group over the last 20 years and the takeover of the
Elders’ insurance business in Australia is the latest acquisition in QBE’s growth
strategy. QBE is now one of the 25 largest insurers in the world with operations
in 45 countries deriving three-quarters of its revenue from outside Australia.
QBE has been consistently in the top performers in terms of return on equity
and combined operating ratio for the past seven years. QBE has negotiated
the global financial crisis with extraordinary skill through its strategy of
diversification by product, geographical exposure and conservative investments, which has been a vital
ingredient in the Group’s success. Market capitalization of QBE Group is now over $22.5 billion, up over
10 times the companies’ value since O’Halloran took over the reigns as CEO. His vision and leadership
have led to the establishment and introduction of the QBE Cultural Program, called OPENUPQBE, a program

leaders and the key value drivers for the business. The worth of the QBE Cultural Program cannot be

Created in 1957, the Insurance Hall of Fame award honors insurance leaders who have made a broad,
encompassing and lasting contribution to the insurance industry and who are recognized by their peers as
successful leaders, innovators and visionaries. Nominees for the Insurance Hall of Fame are selected by the
IIS Honors Committee, a body of senior insurance executives and academicians, and voted on by the IIS
membership by secret ballot. The Honors Committee may also present the award posthumously to worthy
