<strong>The</strong> Commentarial Introduction<br />

So yadā Bhagavā Sammāsambodhiṁ abhisambujjhitvā,<br />
After the Gracious One completely awakened to Perfect Awakening,<br />
pavattavara-Dhammacakko, 4 Yasādayo kulaputte vinetvā, 5<br />
turned the auspicious Dhamma Wheel, instructed Yasa, the son of a good family,<br />
Uruvelaṁ patvā, tattha jaṭilasahassaṁ vinetvā,<br />
arrived at Uruvelā, <strong>an</strong>d there instructed the thous<strong>an</strong>d yogis,<br />
purāṇajaṭilehi khīṇāsavabhikkhūhi saddhiṁ Rājagahaṁ g<strong>an</strong>tvā,<br />
<strong>an</strong>d together with the former yogis, who were now pollut<strong>an</strong>t-free monks, went to<br />
Rājagaha,<br />
Buddhadass<strong>an</strong>atthaṁ dvādas<strong>an</strong>ahutāya parisāya saddhiṁ<br />
° he preached Dhamma to King Bimbisāra <strong>an</strong>d the assembly of twelve myriads<br />
āgatassa Bimbisāramahārājassa 6 Dhammaṁ desesi.<br />
who had come in order to see the Awakened One.<br />
Tadā Raññā saddhiṁ āgatesu dvādas<strong>an</strong>ahutesu<br />
From that twelve myriads who came together with the King<br />
ekaṁ nahutaṁ upāsakattaṁ paṭivedesi,<br />
one myriad <strong>an</strong>nounced they were devotees,<br />
ekādasa nahutāni Sotāpattiphale patiṭṭhahiṁsu saddhiṁ Raññā Bimbisārena.<br />
<strong>an</strong>d eleven myriads were established in the fruit of Stream Entry along with King<br />
Bimbisāra.<br />
Ayaṁ upāsako tesaṁ aññataro,<br />
This devotee (Visākha) was one amongst them,<br />
tehi saddhiṁ paṭhamadass<strong>an</strong>eva 7 Sotāpattiphale patiṭṭhāya,<br />
<strong>an</strong>d at the first meeting he was established with them in the fruit of Stream Entry,<br />
puna ekadivasaṁ, Dhammaṁ sutvā, 8 Anāgāmiphale patiṭṭhito.<br />
<strong>an</strong>d again afterwards on <strong>an</strong>other day, after hearing the Dhamma he was established in<br />
the fruit of a Non-Returner.<br />
