present our re-owned yacht range not only
in an excel list, but rather in a combination
with some photos of the corresponding
yacht. And so the first unofficial version
of our Yachts Magazine was issued for the
Palma boat show 2006 and approximately
100 copies were handed out to interested
clients. Meanwhile we reached a number of
10.000 copies and a number of 80 pages
(back then it was 16 pages) which are printed
offset. This implies a lot of preparation
and therefore we would like to show you
how our Yachts Magazine is made.
First of all there are the editorial texts which
are defined in a little meeting at the beginning
of the process. Writing them really
takes some time! Then they are proofread
and translated into English. Now you might
be asking yourself, why this is so timeconsuming
– despite the texts are not very
long? Well, on the one hand some of our
texts are about sightseeing and attractions
on Majorca – and before you
can start writing about them,
you should rather visit the locations
in order to be able to write
about personal experiences and
impressions. On the other hand,
we have to do some research
on pictures or even do our own
photo shooting.
At the same time the magazines
layout is set up. This is not really
necessary, but due to slight
changes and improvements we
like to insert, it has to be done.
When the German and English
texts are ready, the photos are
selected and inserted and the
photo series are defined, we
insert the ads of our advertising
partners on the respective
pages. Sometimes, we even create
our own ad in
order to advertise
e.g. Bandido Yachts
or our own company
as a yacht broker.
Then we start with
the difficult part –
the insertion of all
of our actual offers
of re-owned yachts
with their technical
details and respective photos.
Due to the fact, that it is possible
that some of these yachts
can be sold instantly, the order
of them may change constantly
until the final deadline for printing.
Of course, it is also possible
vice versa - a client contacts us
short-dated because he wants
to have his yacht for sale presented
in our Yachts Magazine.
And last but not least - the selection
of the cover photo. It is
unbelievable how hard it is to
find the perfect match – one
that fits the frame and represents
the Yachts Magazine as
it should. Sometimes we have
a discussion on that, because
everybody of our team has its
own taste and preferences regarding
the cover photo.
Up to this point there are three persons
involved in the process. Christina Reis is
responsible for all translations; Ruth Boogaard
for proof-reading of the German and
English texts and changes regarding layout
and design and Robert Marekovic is responsible
for texts, photos, layout and design.
The whole project is then transferred into
a web-functional PDF format which is afterwards
available on our website, so that
the keenly interested ones get the chance to
download it immediately. Another PDF document
(a PDF/x3 format) is then prepared
for the printer's and this is what it makes so
complicated. Due to the fact that we want
the colours to turn out like we want them to
be, a continuously colour management incl.
hardware calibration, soft proofs and paper
proofs is inevitable. This PDF/x3 document
is either send online via FTP or the common
way as a CD to the printer's (such a PDF
document can contain data up to several
100 MB).
Now, the printer's do the 4 printing blocks
for the classic 4 colour offset print. Each
printing block contains 4 double pages. For
an eighty-page magazine approximately 10
printing blocks for each colour are made.
These printing blocks, measuring 77 cm x
103 cm each, are inserted into a large sheetfed
offset printing press and now everything
is ready for printing. After printing
all pages, the further processing consists
of cutting, gluing and bundling them into
packs of 20 magazines. Merely 1.500 copies
will be treated separately. They are packed
individually for the direct mail to our clients
and interested people.
A couple of days after the printer's received
the PDF document, we already receive the
freshly printed magazines and we can start
distributing them. The 1.500 copies for the
direct mailing are labelled with the addresses
of our clients and packed into boxes with
an approximate total weight of 360 kg. DHL
now picks them up for
their global mail service
and sends them
to the indicated destinations
all over the
world. Another share
will be distributed in
five-star hotels, marinas,
golf courses and
high standard gastronomy
and through
our cooperation partners
'Engel & Völkers'
and 'Sixt'. So you must
have received your
copy through either
one of these methods
of distribution!
