The Weinzierl castle in Lower Austria, which still stands today, can be considered to be the birthplace of a<br />
chamber music genre which is firmly established in our present-day repertoire. The young <strong>Haydn</strong> was invited<br />
to spend some time at this place by a wealthy musical friend and often met up with the steward at the<br />
castle, the castle priest and the cellist Anton Albrechtsberger to make music. Although his first two works<br />
for “2 violins, viola and bass” still have five movements, their musical value establishes the success of the<br />
string quartet in its own right.<br />

Sechs Werke gehören zur Opusgruppe 9 – die erste geschlossene Gruppe von Streichquartetten, die wir von<br />
<strong>Haydn</strong> kennen. Doch auch formal ging der Komponist hier neue Wege: Orientierte er sich bei den vorangegangenen<br />
Quartetten Opus 1 und 2 noch am fünfsätzigen Divertimento, entschied er sich hier für die in Zukunft<br />
maßgebliche Form der Viersätzigkeit.<br />
Six works belong to opus 9 – the first group of <strong>Haydn</strong>’s string quartets of which we know. The composer<br />
also went new ways as far as form was concerned: whereas he had still adhered to the five movement divertimento<br />
in the previous quartets opus 1 and 2, in this case he favoured four movements, something he continued<br />
in the future.<br />
