BACnet unbegrenzt skalierbar
Scalable BACnet
BACnetGeräte in unserem BACnetInternetzwerk.
letzten Stand BACnetGeräte in 223 Gebäuden hatten.
Dear Reader,
How is it that BACnet can realize provide scalable solutions for a
wide range of needs? It is because scalability is one of its most important
capabilities and has been designed into the protocol from
its earliest days. “Scalable solutions for every need” is the guiding
theme of our booth at the light+build ing show.
BACnet is scalable in two ways. First, the protocol can be implemented
in devices of any size, from the smallest fixedprogram
application specific devices to the largest, most fullfeatured
controllers. BACnet can also be used in different operator interfaces,
from dedicated handheld devices to the most sophisticated
graphical workstations. In recent years, the ability of BACnet
servers to provide web access to BACnet systems has meant that
any device with a web browser, including smart phones and tablets,
is now, for all practical purposes, “ BACnetenabled.”
While the details of BACnet installations are as different as the
buildings in which they are deployed, I can give you an example
of scalability here at my home base, Cornell University, in
upstate New York: We currently have 6,160 BACnet devices on
our BACnet internetwork. (An “internetwork” is a collection
of two or more networks, possibly of different types, connected
by routers). 372 of these are systemlevel controllers using
BACnet / IP over our campus fiberoptic backbone network. The
other 5,788 are much smaller devices that communicate over
ARCNET or MS / TP networks. Most of these devices are dedicated
to room control, the monitoring of electricity, or some
other relatively simple task. Each device only to needs to support
that subset of BACnet’s comprehensive capabilities that are
appropriate to its application.
Second, BACnet’s network and device numbering schemes are
also highly scalable. A particular BACnet internetwork can have
up to 65,535 individual networks. That’s a large number of networks!
At Cornell, again as an example of a realworld installation,
we only have 345 networks although we have BACnet devices
in 223 buildings at last count. The number of devices in a
BACnet internetwork can be as large as 4,194,303. Again, this is
a large number and is probably big enough to deal with almost
any practical situation.
To sum up, BACnet’s modular design, allowing it to be implemented
in devices of any size, and its ability to address millions
of devices on tens of thousands of networks, allows it to be
scaled to virtually any application.
I wish you enjoyable reading! See you at the light+building.
