Cologne is the undisputed radio and TV capital of Germany.
Westdeutscher Rundfunk WDR, the largest public service broadcasting
corporation on the European continent, is based here. RTL,
Europe’s largest and most successful private TV station, broadcasts
from the Rheinpark-Metropole in Cologne’s Deutz district
as does the N-TV news channel. Sport is the focus of attention at
Sportcast and the technical service-provider Wige Media. Center.
TV, Deutschlandradio, Radio Köln, RPR, Super-RTL and VOX are
further prominent names on the list of TV and radio stations in
Cologne. So it comes as no surprise, that a third of Germany’s TV
production meanwhile comes from Cologne.
Producers and stations have recourse to a variety of supply
companies and specialised service companies in Cologne. From
stage engineering via casting right through to postproduction,
internationally renowned companies are represented. Tax and
management consultants have also aligned themselves to the
requirements of the media branch in Cologne. Second-generation
support is also an important term: the Academy of Media Arts,
International Film School Cologne or the University of Applied
Sciences Fresenius guarantee a top level, and Cologne University,
the University of Applied Sciences and the German Sport University
provide courses of studies or further training for those working in
media. Support on the path to freelance activity can be found by
people founding an existence at the AV-Mediengründerzentrum
NRW in the suburb of Mülheim.
Cologne is establishing itself as the computer gaming centre of
Germany. With Games Com, Europe‘s largest trade fair for computer
and video games is meanwhile held in Cologne’s exhibition
halls and the cathedral city was the venue of the World Cyber
Games Grand Final in 2008. A booming media scene would be
unthinkable without top technology in the background. Cologne
is also a top address in the IT and telecommunications industry.
Companies like Adobe, Arxes, Electronic Arts, IBM, Microsoft,
MindTree, Pironet NDH, SQS, QSC, Unitymedia and Wipro are all
present in Cologne. The regional supplier NetCologne operates the
most powerful regional telecommunications network in Europe
here. And the high-tech association Bitkom, together with its
Indian partner Nasscom, is organizing a technical conference here
which will put the cathedral city in the limelight.
Cologne also has plenty to offer in the fields of public relations
and advertising. The media city is one of the five major
German PR cities. Internationally-operating companies like
Ströer Out-of-Home Media AG or JC Decaux complement the
wide range of medium-sized and smaller agencies.
