Daniel Parish Kidder (1815 - 1891), an American Methodist minister, accepted<br />
from the American Bible Society the post <strong>of</strong> missionary in Brazil. He arrived in<br />
Rio in 1837. Kidder undertook a long journey across the Brazilian proncinces. He<br />
returned to the United States in 1840. Among his works he left these Sketsches,<br />
divided into two volumes, the first covering the country between Rio and São<br />
Paulo, and the second volume the Northern provinces. This work is very valuable<br />
from the historic point <strong>of</strong> view - (Borba de Moraes). Das außergewöhnlich<br />
sehr gut erhaltene Exemplar der Originalausgabe stammt aus der Bibliothek des<br />
Prinzen Adalbert von Preussen - mit entsprechendem Exlibris in beiden Bänden.<br />
Bibliographia Brasiliana: R. Borba de Moraes, p. 434; Sabin 37708; Brunet III,<br />
p. 658 - 659 und Graesse IV, p. 15 - 16 erwähnen die sogenannte Philadelphia-<br />
Ausgabe, im gleichen Jahr erschienen.<br />
