Maguire's journal is more than a priceless ethnographical document: it is also a fascinating account of
European men learning to cope with the dual challenges of an exotic environment and a foreign society."

Nouv. Biogr. nennt 1773 als Erscheinungsjahr, alle uns zugänglichen Bibliographien hingegen 1777. Da
sowohl "Approbation" wie "Privilege du Roi" auf 1776 datiert sind, scheint 1777 richtig zu sein. - Siehe

Meinhof entwickelte die sprachwissenschaftliche Hamitentheorie weiter, derzufolge die hellhäutigeren
nordafrikanischen Völker und deren Nachkommen eine innerhalb Afrikas höherentwickelte "Herrenrasse"
darstellen. Er versuchte insbesondere nachzuweisen, dass die Bantu-Völker aus einer Verschmelzung von
hamitischen und nichthamitischen afrikanischen Völkern hervorgegangen seien. Ebenso seien die
Hottentotten aus einer Verschmelzung von Hamiten und Buschmännern entstanden. - South African Bibl.,

system of classification of the Hamitic languages was based on a belief that "speakers of Hamitic became
largely coterminous with cattle herding peoples with essentially Caucasian origins, intrinsically different
from and superior to the 'Negroes of Africa'." - Wrapper slightly worn around the edges. A good,
unopened copy internally.
