Der zufall schreibt manchmal ein realistischeres,
amüsanteres Drehbuch als das der angeblichen
ermordung des netten Komponisten
durch den bösen Salieri.
Mozart ist gerade sechs Jahre alt. Im anschluss
an München unternimmt Leopold
aufgehalten, was Vater Leopold vierzig Gulden
wieder gutzumachen: Das verpasste treffen
im oktober 1762 kann nun zu einer tatsächlichen
begegnung werden. Orfeo ed Euridice
in der Geburtsstadt Mozarts – noch dazu im
rahmen der Mozartwoche – besiegelt einen
Pakt, den die beiden hätten schließen können:
prima la musica colle parole, dopo ...
„il resto nol dico“.
Marc Minkowski
1
Schon in unserer ersten Mozartwoche haben
Marc Minkowski und ich versucht, die künstlerische
Vielfalt erlebbar zu machen, die das
Phänomen Mozart unweigerlich hervorruft –
sowohl in den Konzertprogrammen als auch
in den Interpretationsansätzen. Sein Schaffen
ermöglicht nicht nur, sondern erfordert sogar
die haltung eines „sowohl – als auch“, ein
Gedanke, den übrigens schon richard Strauss
vertreten hat. Der einzigartige Klang der wiener
Philharmoniker ist für die Pflege der werke
Mozarts und seiner zeitgenossen genauso unverzichtbar
wie die lebendige Suche nach
dem originalklang mit ensembles wie Les
Musiciens du Louvre Grenoble oder dem
Freiburger barockorchester. Dabei zeigen gerade
die wiener Philharmoniker in drei wunderbaren
Konzerten im Großen Festspielhaus
unter so unterschiedlichen Dirigenten wie
Paavo Järvi, Marc Minkowski und Daniel barenboim
wieder ihre ganze wandlungsfähigkeit,
die sich genauso in den Programmen
widerspiegelt.
In beziehung gesetzt wird Mozarts Schaffen
diesmal mit werken von christoph willibald
Gluck, richard Strauss, carl Philipp emanuel
bach, Muzio clementi und arvo Pärt.
zu Gluck, der 2014 seinen 300. Geburtstag
doch zeigt Pärts Musik, deren Kraft zumeist
wien behutsam aktualisierten Fassung. Dem
expressiven reichtum der Musik des vor
allem in berlin und hamburg wirkenden
bach-Sohns, den Mozart bewunderte, lässt
sich dann vor allem in den Museumskonzerten
weiter nachspüren.
Mit zyklischen aufführungen wechselnder
teile von Mozarts Schaffen möchten wir dem
Publikum der Mozartwoche in einzigartiger
weise die Möglichkeit bieten, die Kompositionen
aus bestimmten Lebensabschnitten oder
einzelnen Gattungen innerhalb weniger tage
gespielten Streichquintette.
Von Muzio clementi, einem bedeutenden zeitgenossen
Mozarts, sind vier große Symphonien
erhalten, die ebenso wie viele seiner Klavierwerke
heute zu unrecht an den rand des
repertoires gerückt sind – Ivor bolton wird
sie, Seite an Seite mit Mozart-arien, gesungen
von der trägerin der Lilli-Lehmann-Medaille
christiane Karg, neu ins zentrum stellen.
Sometimes chance writes a more realistic and
amusing screenplay than the alleged murder
of the composer by Salieri. this one takes
place at the other end of Mozart’s life, when
he was just six years old.
after Munich, Leopold Mozart embarked on
the second of the journeys during which he
intended to present his child prodigy in all
the capital cities of europe. Vienna was next
on the list. through the fault of count thunhohenstein,
however, the family was detained
longer than planned in Passau; this cost Leo -
pold forty gulden and delayed their arrival in
Vienna. when they finally arrived, on 6 octo -
ber 1762, a momentous event had just occurred
in the history of music: the previous
day, tuesday 5 october, Orfeo ed Euridice
had been premièred in the burg theater.
what would have happened if wolfgang had
been present at this performance? how would
he have been received by Gluck? this remains
an eternal mystery. the lives of the two greatest
lyric geniuses of their time are marked by failed
encounters. In 1762, the proud, ambitious
Leopold did not even deign to mention Orfeo;
later, he was to regard Gluck merely as a tyrant
who was jealous of wolfgang. Despite this,
wolfgang himself was to develop a friendly relationship
with his famous older colleague,
composing variations on an aria from Gluck’s
Les pèlerins de la Mecque and even showing
affection for him during the 1780s. at any
rate, it is impossible to avoid hearing Les pèle -
rins in Die Entführung or thinking of Gluck
during Idomeneo.
that stroke of fate in the autumn of 1762 drew
a clear line between the two; Gluck and Mozart
would for ever belong to opposite worlds. the
older composer paid homage to the word –
prima le parole, dopo la musica; the younger
to prima la musica e poi le parole. the former
was to be immortalised through tragedy, the
latter through dramma giocoso and Sing spiel.
Gluck would have his Piccinnis, Mozart his
Salieris; but both – each in his own style and
his own musical language – were to exert an
enormous influence on posterity. alone, they
embody the entire gamut of classical opera:
day and night.
I have been conducting works by both these
composers for twenty-five years, without the
question ever arising of their relative worth
and genius, or of which should take precedence.
they complement each other so perfectly
that I thought the forthcoming cen -
tenary (Gluck was born in 1714) would be
the ideal opportunity of rectifying a historical
mishap. Let us make the missed encounter of
october 1762 into a true meeting. Let Orfeo
ed Euridice in the town of Mozart’s birth, in
the Mozart week, seal the pact they might
have made together: prima la musica colle
parole, dopo ... “il resto nol dico”.
Marc Minkowski
4
5
In our very first Mozart week, Marc Min kows ki
and I have done our best to bring out the
whole artistic range associated with the phe -
no menon that is Mozart – both in the concert
programmes and in the different approaches
to interpretation. his work not only enables,
but demands a “both ... and” attitude – an idea
already propounded by richard Strauss. the
unique sound of the Vienna Philharmonic is
just as indispensable to the performance of
works by Mozart and his contemporaries as
the keen search for the original sound, undertaken
by ensembles such as Les Musiciens du
Louvre Grenoble or the Freiburg baroque orchestra.
In three concerts in the Large Festival
hall, the Vienna Philharmonic once again
demonstrate their versatility under very different
conductors – Paavo Järvi, Marc Min -
kowski and Daniel barenboim – and in pro -
grammes just as diverse.
this year, Mozart will be juxtaposed with
christoph willibald Gluck, richard Strauss,
carl Philipp emanuel bach, Muzio clementi
and arvo Pärt.
Gluck (who would have celebrated his 300th
birthday in 2014) was an influential figure
not only for Mozart, but for all the composers
of his age. we will stage his opera Orfeo ed
Euridice as a true “azione teatrale per musi -
ca”: intimate yet powerful. his work is also
represented in the concerts: a whole programme
of Gluck and Mozart with Sonya
Yon cheva, rolando Villazón and Marc Min -
kowski, and excerpts from La clemenza di
Tito in the settings by both Gluck and Mozart,
with Marianne crebassa, Louis Langrée and
the Salzburg camerata.
It is very important to us that the Mozart week
is not misunderstood as being set like a fine
gemstone; our intention is not to present
Mozart as a solitaire, but to show his work in
relation to our own time. the festival is also
intended function as a “music laboratory” in
which our perception of the art can be developed
and deepened, since past and present
reflect each other.
thus we juxtapose Mozart with arvo Pärt,
whose peculiarly austere yet immensely attractive
music has long made him one of the
most popular present-day composers. at first
glance, this may seem surprising, but Pärt’s
music, which derives its power mostly from
its great simplicity, has a great affinity with
that of Mozart. we are delighted that the programme
includes a world première of a work
by Pärt, commissioned by the Mozarteum
Foundation: the orchestral version of his
Littlemore Tractus. the composer himself is
looking forward to hearing it performed by
the Vienna Philharmonic.
richard Strauss, a great admirer of Mozart, is
represented with charming early pieces and
some of his splendid late works, which fit lo -
gic ally and associatively into the context of
the Mozart week. they include the Metamor-
phoses, the Four Last Songs, Stimmungsbilder
and the oboe concerto.
Mozart’s musical environment will also be
exam ined once again, with examples from
mutually influential contemporaries. a particularly
rewarding rarity is the oratorio The
Resurrection and Ascension of Jesus by carl
Philipp emanuel bach, in Mozart’s sensitive
1788 arrangement for performance in Vienna.
the richly expressive music of cPe bach,
who worked primarily in berlin and hamburg,
and whose music Mozart admired, can also
be heard in the Museum concerts.
audiences will have the opportunity of hearing
compositions from particular phases of Mozart’s
life or specific genres performed in the space
of a few days, thus offering an overall impression
of the works. andrás Schiff will play all the
piano works composed in 1784. the programme
also includes the complete piano so -
na tas (following the “both ... and” principle,
some performed on a modern grand piano,
some on the hammerklavier) as well as the
far too rarely heard string quintets.
Muzio clementi was a distinguished contemporary
of Mozart’s; Ivor bolton will put four
of his major symphonies back in the picture,
also conducting Mozart arias sung by christi -
ane Karg, bearer of the Lilli Lehmann Medal.
the film series again illustrates the programme
from its own perspective. Finally, we once
more proudly present the Mozart children’s
orchestra, which will of course contribute to
the concluding events of the 2014 Mozart
week; could there be any better way to demonstrate
true verve and enthusiasm for musicmaking?
we look forward to welcoming you.
orpheus, zumal in christoph willibald Glucks volksliedhaft-schlichter und dadurch umso be -
eurydike wieder ins Leben zurückzuholen, in allen Künsten immer wieder thematisiert
“che farò senza euridice” – “what is life to me without thee”. orpheus’ heart-rending lament –
particularly in christoph willibald Gluck’s setting, all the more moving for its folksong-like
simplicity – has fascinated us and touched our hearts for over 250 years. the ancient Greeks
believed that music was invented by orpheus; no wonder, then, that all the arts focus so often
on the fate of the best-known song-maker of all time, who descends into the underworld to
placate the Furies with his sublime singing and bring his beloved eurydice back from the
dead. with his epoch-making work Orfeo ed Euridice, first performed in 1762 in Vienna,
Gluck set in motion a radical reform of Italian opera. It was no longer overloaded with subplots;
instead of traditional secco recitatives leading from one aria to the next, scenes combined
into larger formal units were accompanied by tone-painting in explanatory interjections
from the whole orchestra; and the sequence of numbers was replaced by a continuous gripping
musical drama. without Gluck’s innovations, Mozart’s masterly operas would have been inconceivable,
even if the Salzburg composer was then to go his own way from idealisation to
humanisation. Gluck’s Orfeo ed Euridice still radiates modernity and timeless validity. In this
version of the “azione teatrale per musica” staged by Ivan alexandre, orfeo is given expression
by bejun Mehta, under the baton of Marc Minkowski.

Wiener Philharmoniker
“to establish a uniform Mozart-style for the performance of this infinitely fine and richly
structured spiritual landscape is both foolish and trivial.” thus richard Strauss, a great Mozartadmirer,
who was very closely associated with the Vienna Philharmonic as composer and
conductor. Versatility and adaptability count amongst the virtues of this well-loved masterly
orchestra, as it demonstrates amply in the annual Mozart week – especially when it is a question
of re-exploring the Mozartian cosmos in traditional or unprecedented, unconventional or
tried-and-tested ways. the direction to be taken will be pointed by forceful, widely-differing
personalities on the rostrum: Paavo Järvi, Marc Minkowski and Daniel barenboim. the programme
ranges from b mayor Symphony K319, composed in Salzburg in 1799, through the
engaging tones of the haffner Symphony and Serenade, to the inexhaustible final symphonic
triad. It is enhanced by the Violin concerto by Johannes brahms, Metamorphosen by richard
Strauss, his beautifully nostalgic Four Last Songs, with anja harteros, and the first performance
of a work by the estonian composer long since become a cosmopolitan: arvo Pärt; opulent sounds
and expressive urgency on the same wavelength.
nehmenden „Vier letzten Liedern“ zusteht.
Lebens“.
“Mozart’s work contains all phases of human experience, from the monumental, dark grandeur
of the commendatore’s scene in Don Giovanni to the daintiness of the zerlina arias, the
heavenly frivolities of Figaro and the deliberate ironies of Così fan tutte ... no less amply do
his non-dramatic creations run the whole gamut of the expression of human feeling.” richard
Strauss’ words about his beloved Mozart tell us perhaps just as much about himself and his
music, indirectly describing its expressive range. In the Mozart week, besides immortal gems of
lied, sung by Michael Schade, the focus is on serene, elegiac yet splendidly maturing examples
from Strauss’ late work. the graceful introductory sextet from Capriccio – the opera within
an opera, which was to be the richly allusive conclusion to Strauss’ stage works – is performed
in a choral version. François Leleux plays the brilliant classicistic oboe concerto, and Marc
Minkowski conducts the Vienna Philharmonic in the sublime farewell of the Four Last Songs –
that orchestral damask-work to which the voice of anja harteros is ideally suited. Paavo Järvi
and the Vienna Philharmonic will perform the elegiac Metamorphoses, which Strauss
completed only weeks before the end of the nazi dictatorship and world war II – as what he
called a “reflection of his entire past life”.
Jahrhunderts.
“every composer should be capable of joining two or three notes together. but between two
or three consecutive notes there is an infinite expanse. one relationship can bring a note to
life, while another can kill what was alive.” Intuitive logic and intelligibility, more still the
impression of clarity and natural simplicity – which for others seems so hard to achieve, or
only with enormous effort – this and more provides good reason to present arvo Pärt’s music
alongside that of Mozart. his earlier works experiment with serial and aleatory writing and
collage techniques; after years spent amid political constraints searching for his personal
voice, the estonian composer found it in the voluntary austerity of his “tintinnabuli” style.
In the Mozart week, the strength and vitality of Pärt’s music has the effect of a seed developing
the force to break through concrete – as demonstrated with the world première of his Littlemore
Tractus for orchestra (commissioned by the Salzburg Mozarteum Foundation), in which Pärt
pays homage to cardinal John henry newman, the distinguished 19th-century english
churchman and writer.
Pianist Paul Lewis: Mit strahlendem c-Dur-Pomp beginnt Mozarts Klavierkonzert KV 503 –
„cantus in Memory of benjamin britten“ sowie richard Straussens hier chorisch dargebotenes
Gastorchester
the basic themes of the Mozart week are concentrated with particular clarity and effect in
the programmes presented by guest orchestras. the Musiciens du Louvre Grenoble under
the baton of Marc Minkowski explore music by christoph willibald Gluck, who, as herder
remarked with admiration, “disdaining the lumber of worthless notes, recognised and realised
the necessity of a sincere conjunction of pure human feelings and the story itself with the
notes he composed”. this comprises arias and duets, in which the exceptional bulgarian soprano
Sonya Yoncheva is joined once again by rolando Villazón, who can give full rein to his talent
as a Mozart tenor. robin ticciati, the Scottish chamber orchestra and pianist Paul Lewis, on
the other hand, bring momentous tones; Mozart’s Piano concerto K503 begins in the radiant
splendour of c major, but later, with its insistent throbbing four-note motif, seems to anticipate
the first movement of beethoven’s Fifth, to be performed after the interval. arvo Pärt’s moving
Cantus in Memory of Benjamin Britten and richard Strauss’ Capriccio sextett – here in a
choral setting – mark the end and the turning-point of human existence: happy those with
unimpaired belief in the resurrection and ascension of Jesus, as carl Philipp emanuel bach
set it in thrilling strains, rich in “novelty, grandeur and strength, in moving expression and
admirably heartfelt song”.
andrás Schiff and his cappella andrea barca – this year, audiences are treated to a concentrated
portion of the superb combination of pianist and conductor in one, together with the orchestra
consisting of soloist-standard performers: three consecutive days demonstrate Mozart’s prolific
achievements of the year 1784 in performances of piano concertos, chamber music and solo
sonatas K449-459. this was a happy and productive period for him; his concerts were an
(economic) success, attracting many subscribers, his relationship with his father – strained
by his marriage to constanze weber – was cleared up, his second son, carl thomas, was
born (the first of two children who were to outlive their father), the family moved into an
apartment in the Domgasse befitting their social status, and nannerl married – and received
a tongue-in-cheek poem from her brother for the occasion. Set between the brilliant piano
concertos are the elaborate variations which show unsuspected aspects of a Singspiel theme
by Gluck, and one of the string quartets (K458) dedicated to his friend Joseph haydn “after
long and laborious endeavour”, which prompted haydn to style Mozart as “the greatest composer
known to me, either in person or by name”.
carL PhILIPP eManueL bach: oratorIuM
“he is the father, we are the children. anything we do correctly we learned from him.” Mozart
apparently spoke with such modesty about carl Philipp emanuel bach’s True Art of Playing
Keyboard Instruments. It was in the latter’s revolutionary works that sonata form began to
take shape in form and content – no wonder, then, that Joseph haydn admitted owing much to
the best-known son of the thomasschule Kantor, having “understood and made an assiduous
study” of his works. the Mozart week traces in depth and in many different aspects the wealth
of association between the works of the “berlin” and “hamburg” bach and the so-called
classical style – with a symphony, chamber music and piano sonatas. to begin with, however,
comes a performance of his once celebrated oratorio Die Auferstehung und Himmelfahrt
Jesu, to a text by the “Geman horace”, Karl wilhelm ramler, on which he quite rightly wrote:
“although this ramler cantata is by me, I can still assert, without foolish egotism, that it will
last many years, because it is one of my important masterworks, from which young composers
can learn something”. In 1788, Mozart arranged this work, amongst others, for private performance
of older oratorios in the van Swieten house; he treated it with great sensitivity,
making only minor alterations. rené Jacobs conducts this performance, with the rIaS chamber
choir, the Freiburg baroque orchestra and select soloists. at the van Swieten performance,
a portrait of bach was passed around: cultic reverence for a master.
“If a table has four legs, it often wobbles, then you have to put something under one of its legs.
but if the table has three legs, it can’t wobble. It may be lopsided, but it won’t wobble. So the
question of whether four legs or three is not just a question of one leg fewer; a completely
different dimension comes into play ... I hope I can manage to write ‘three-legged’ music”.
arvo Pärt’s deliberate reduction to essentials and “just as many notes as there should be” (as
Mozart once pertly replied to emperor Joseph II) is part of the fascination he holds. how
many and which notes are demanded by one and the same subject can be studied by, for
instance, comparing the overture and the famous “Parto, parto” from Mozart’s La clemenza
di Tito with the setting written forty years previously by christoph willibald Gluck, who gave
Sesto a wonderful, if notoriously difficult aria: “Se mai senti spirarti sul volto”. excerpts from
Mozart’s early operas, symphonies by his contemporary Muzio clementi, together with further
felicitous discoveries in the work of Gluck and counterpoints by richard Strauss form profound,
richly allusive links between the programmes of the Salzburg Mozarteum orchestra, camerata
abbey nennt ihn „the Father of the Pianoforte“, sein symphonisches Schaffen aber war lange
ierten „God Save the King“ fast leitmotivartig eindrucksvoll dem britischen Monarchen gehuldigt
“clementi plays well, as far as execution with the right hand goes. his greatest strength lies
in his passages in 3rds. apart from that, he has not a kreuzer’s worth of taste or feeling – in
short he is a mere mechanicus.” – harsh criticism from Mozart – who never felt comfortable
with Latin competition – of his roman colleague (his senior by four years) after a piano contest
in the presence of emperor Joseph II on christmas eve 1781. he cannot, however, have detested
clementi as a composer; otherwise, would he have quoted from one of clementi’s piano
sonatas in the overture to The Magic Flute? clementi, on the other hand, who admired
Mozart’s playing, later had a great influence on the piano works of his friend beethoven; he
settled in London and made a name for himself throughout europe with a music-publishing
and piano-manufacturing firm. his gravestone in westminster abbey calls him the “Father of
the Pianoforte”, but for a long time his symphonic work was forgotten – unjustly, as the Mozart
week demonstrates with four major works. haydn’s wit, beethoven’s pathos and masterly
counterpoint are captivatingly combined here; his Great National Symphony, with its virtuoso
variations on “God Save the King”, pays impressive tribute to the british monarch, almost
anticipating the leitmotiv, and the 4th Symphony opens the way to romantics such as brahms
or even bruckner. Surprises are guaranteed.
Museumskonzerte
In the Mozart week, the “bold speechless music” of carl Philipp emanuel bach – a combination
of so-called “naturalness”, elaborate popularity, unaccustomed, extreme inflection of harmony
and melody, and formal complexity – can be heard in historical performance practice: hille
Perl and Florian birsak play sonatas for viola da gamba and keyboard, anton Steck and Marieke
Spaans sonatas for piano and violin, while christoph hammer explores the richly varied cosmos
of carl Philipp emanuel bach’s solo keyboard works – on Mozart’s own instrument. beethoven,
too, was convinced of the timeless quality and exemplary effect of his influential colleague: “of
emanuel bach’s clavier works I have only a few, yet they must be not only a real delight to
every true artist, but also serve him for study purposes; and it is for me a great pleasure to play
works that I have never seen, or seldom see, for real art lovers.” when Francesco corti, thibault
noally, herbert Lindsberger and Marcus Pouget come together to perform works by Mozart,
three original instruments will be heard: Mozart’s hammerklavier, his violin and his viola.
Sonate D 850 kennzeichnen.
Kammer- und Solistenkonzerte
“truth is simple, and the path to it is straight ... truth consists in going right to the smallest
possible number. It’s like detecting land-mines – the circle becomes smaller and smaller. but
it has to be done with caution and common sense ... all colours are contained in white light,
but we can’t recognise them. only a prism can separate them and render them visible. this
prism might be the soul of the listener.” arvo Pärt’s words could be the motto of the chamber
music concerts and solo recitals in the Mozart week: strict economy in the choice of resources
combined with maximum explosive force of musical expression characterises not only the
concert with the Latvian radio chorus and notable instrumentalists, which includes some of
Pärt’s best-known works, and in which the composer also enters into a poetic dialogue with
Mozart; it also determines the lieder recital with Michael Schade and the programme which
sees renaud capuçon, alina Ibragimova and friends come together to show the whole wide
spectrum of Mozart’s six string quintets. Finally, in a concentrated but enormously complex
collocation, Daniel barenboim juxtaposes Mozart’s intimate melancholy minor key with
richard Strauss’ youthful evocative pictures and with the rapturous soaring, unexpected
turns of phrase and lyrical islands that characterise Franz Schubert’s D major Sonata D850.
according to musicologists charles rosen and Friedrich blume, Mozart’s six string quintets
are his greatest achievements in chamber music, standing in solitary splendour on a historic
summit. the first, in charming divertimento style, was written when Mozart was just 18; the
last two were composed “on the very urgent request of a music-lover”, the final one written
down in april 1791. thus these works of supreme musical purity, full of surprises and complex
motivic connections, span Mozart’s entire “adult” life as a composer, and allow us insights
into the genius that combines such a wealth of melody and compositional technique with the
greatest transparency. bernhard Paumgartner called the last two quintets “crystal-clear chamber
music, compositions of exquisite, timeless maturity, of compelling charm in their dynamism
and profound feeling”. as alfred einstein put it, this is music in which erudition is transformed
into wit and charm, while losing nothing of its gravity.
MozartS KLaVIerSonaten Mozart’S PIano SonataS
In wirklichkeit steckt hinter
Pianist edwin Fischer once said: “Mozart is a touchstone of the heart. If I want to do something
really nice for someone, I sit down at the piano and play him a piece by Mozart.” his
colleague Paul badura-Skoda, who collaborated with his wife eva on an urtext edition of Mozart’s
piano sonatas, echoes this: “Mozart’s depth of thought and feeling is beyond comprehension.
the mystery of Mozart can be spoken of only through metaphors. his sonatas meet our eyes
with the gaze of a child – unfathomable; the feeling they give us is like that evoked by a Goethe
poem: it is simply there, and we can hardly believe that there was a time when it didn’t exist.
the spontaneity and apparent ease of Mozart’s work has misled generations of music-lovers
to believe, mistakenly, that he composed without effort, as a bird sings. In fact, there lies behind
this act of creation an infinitely laborious, tireless work and learning process.” the Mozart
week enables us to retrace and to overview this fantastic development, at the same time considering
the works from two different aspects: Fazil Say and Kristian bezuidenhout share performance
of the complete Mozart piano sonatas – the turkish pianist on a modern grand
piano, his South african colleague on the hammerklavier. charming profundity, spontaneous
ease – with the occasional stab of pain: facets of an artist’s life.
not only for his performances of Mozart's piano concertos and solo works has alfred brendel
risen to world fame. he has also written essays on music, musicians and musical interpretation,
as well as whimsical, wise, sometimes absurd poetry. During the 1960s he was soloist in many
of bernhard Paumgartner's Mozart Matinées. he first performed at the Mozarteum Foundation
in 1962, giving a recital in the main concert hall. Starting with the 1969 Mozart week, when
he appeared together with the Vienna Philharmonic conducted by zubin Mehta, he was a regular
guest. his most recent performance was in a recital with his cellist son adrian, at the 2004
Mozart week. on 18 December 2008, alfred brendel marked his retirement from the concert
KONKURRENTEN UND FREUNDE: GLUCK UND CLEMENTI
Mit Ivan Alexandre u. a.
Mozart’s contemporaries included both admirers and detractors, friends and enemies. Gluck
and clementi suggest that we might look at biographical and musical points of contact.
on 26 February and 4 March 1788, Mozart conducted the oratorio The Resurrection and
Ascension of Jesus by carl Philipp emanuel bach. Performed here, for the first time, is the
version arranged by Mozart for the conditions available to him in Vienna; this offers the
opportunity of discussing different approaches to classicism in music.
