as the EU Central Office for combating
euro counterfeiting, Europol primarily
focuses on collecting worldwide
information on counterfeiting of the
euro currency, while Interpol concentrates
on collecting counterfeit information
on other worldwide currencies.
Consequently, on a daily basis, Interpol
forwards requests from its member
countries about euro counterfeiting
so that Europol can lend its support. In
return, Europol provides Interpol with
information on other currencies including
the euro.
This arrangement has allowed both
organisations to clearly focus on its respective
tasks, avoided duplication of efforts,
provided clarity to the respective
Member States and has facilitated effective
joint activities in combating currency
counterfeiting. The information
exchange between Interpol and Europol
in the field of currency counterfeiting
is the liveliest one of all mandated
areas of cooperation.
The benefits of Europol and Interpol
cooperation can also be seen through
our sharing of expertise and best practice,
production of joint assessments, the
provision of mutual support at major
events and carrying out of joint training
sessions for law enforcement officers.
Interpol also provides valuable contributions
for Europol’s publications, the
OCTA (Organised Crime Threat Assessment)
and ROCTA (Russian Organised
Crime Threat Assessment).
We shall continue to identify and
develop common areas for future joint
actions between Europol and Interpol
with the aim of providing an integrated
first-class service to the international
police community. This will result
in fruitful cooperation and constructive
knowledge sharing which will,
in turn, make a distinctive contribution
to the fight against serious international
crime and terrorism in Europe
and beyond.
