Virtueller Rundgang durch den CityCube Berlin
// Virtual Tour Through the CityCube Berlin
// Excavation work is underway at the site of the forthcoming CityCube Berlin next
to the tradeshow halls and the cornerstone will be laid in only a few months. The
CityCube Berlin is a multifunctional trade, congress and event arena that will host
its first major events at the beginning of 2014. Anyone interested in seeing what the
new building will look like is invited to take a virtual CityCube Berlin tour on the Messe
Berlin website. The building designed by Dresden-based architects CODE UNIQUE
features two light-flooded levels: the lower floor can be partitioned to create eight
conference rooms with a capacity of up to 4,500 people or transformed into different
sized exhibition spaces. On the upper level, a further ten rooms with flexible partition
walls are available for up to 150 people, as well as diverse meeting rooms and diverse
offices. The additional exhibition space provided by new structure was necessary to
boost Messe Berlin’s competitiveness. The CityCube Berlin will be used as a congress
site during renovation work on the ICC Berlin.
IGW 2013: Niederlande als Partnerland
// IGW 2013: Holland is the Official Partner Country
Immerhin gehen
26 Prozent der niederländischen Agrarexporte nach Deutschland,
das damit wichtigster Handelspartner ist.
// The Netherlands has been an annual guest at Berlin’s International
Green Week (IGW) since 1953. To mark its 60th anniversary,
the longest-attending country at the world’s largest consumer show
for agriculture, food and horticulture will once again be the IGW’s
official partner country. The contract was already signed at the
IGW 2012 in January by Dutch Agricultural Minister Henk Bleker
and Messe Berlin CEO & President Raimund Hosch (photo). Indeed,
26 percent of Dutch agricultural exports go to Germany, making it
the country’s most important trade partner.
September erneut nam-
Marsimoto, auch bekannt als Marteria (Foto). Ebenfalls live in der Open-Air-Arena unterm Funkturm
präsentiert BB Radio am 31. August Xavier Naidoo & Quartett. Der Mannheimer wird außerdem als
„Special Guest“ Mic Donet begrüßen, seinen Protégé aus der Gesangs-Castingshow „The Voice of
BER und Berlin ExpoCenter Airport – letzte Vorbereitungen laufen
// BER and Berlin ExpoCenter Airport – Final Preparations Underway
13.000 Pkws.
// 3 June is fast approaching – that day will mark the launch of operations at the
brand-new Berlin Brandenburg Airport, which will bear the code name “BER”.
Activities at Berlin’s Tegel and Schönefeld airports will come to a close the night
before. A special coordinating station has been set up to make the move from
both airports as smooth as possible, especially seeing as roughly 4,000 rooms and
offices at BER need to be furnished and 150 retail units filled with goods. Within
only a couple of hours overnight from 2 to 3 June, fire engines, haulers and other
special-purpose vehicles will make the move. Roughly one month later, on 4 July,
the Berlin ExpoCenter Airport next door will celebrate its own premiere by hosting
the PANORAMA fashion fair (see page 24). The site is made up of three exhibition
halls with a capacity of more than 20,000 square metres that can be expanded via
temporary structures. Also in the works are outdoor areas for special exhibitions
and parking spaces for roughly 13,000 passenger cars.
Schokoladentafeln in sämtlichen Geschmacksrichtungen.
in Berlin-Schöneberg.
1974, the journalist and travel writer Bruce Chatwin
severed his ties with the editorial office at the “Sunday
“In Patagonia“, soon to become one of the most
important works of travel literature ever written. Much
later, two owners of a bookstore in Berlin-Schöneberg
would name their shop after this travel-loving writer.
The assortment is vast, sorted by country and continent,
and includes travel guides as well as travel literature.
In addition to accessories, the shop also sells
the famed Moleskine notebooks in which Chatwin
in all sorts of flavours. And right at the entrance, a counter where
Rundreise
// Roundtrip to antiquity _ It’s the year 129 AD. You are in the middle of
legendary Pergamon, observing life in the streets, witnessing a festival in
honour of the god Dionysus or visiting the famed library on the Acropolis. The
artist Yadegar Asisi has made this journey through time possible by constructing
a one-of-a-kind 360° panorama in the courtyard of the Pergamon Museum.
At 24 metres high and 103 metres long, the simulation provides a compelling
perspective on life in ancient Pergamon. Asisi used reconstruction drawings,
photographs of archaeological finds and several sketches in creating his visualisation.
The panorama accompanies the exhibition “Pergamon – Panorama of
the Ancient Metropolis“, situated in the north and east wings of the Pergamon
Museum and presenting, through September, 450 exhibits from the institution's
trove of antiquities, some of which have never before been on display.
world. Alongside the perennial garden, there is a renaissance garden,
chinese, japanese, korean, balinese and oriental gardens, as
well as a garden labyrinth. In April 2011 the Christian garden was
finally opened, rounding out the overall concept of a complement-
Zufrieden
bilanzierte Dr. Christian Göke, Geschäftsführer der
Messe Berlin: „Damit konnte die ITB Berlin ihre
Position als Wissensplattform Nummer eins der
internationalen Reiseindustrie erneut unter Beweis
// This year’s ITB Berlin from 7-11 March once again featured jam-packed halls,
magnificent tradeshow stands and a great atmosphere. More than 172,000
visitors, roughly 113,000 of which were industry professionals, and almost
10,700 exhibitors proved that the ITB Berlin remains the leading tradeshow for
the international travel industry. The exhibition’s key themes, which included
sustainability in tourism and travel technology, combined with the new “Buyers
Circle” and forums such as the “eTravel World 2012” enjoyed tremendous
visitor interest. And the highly topical programme at the ITB Berlin Congress
attracted roughly 20 percent more participants than in the previous year.
Another ITB Berlin highlight: in the hall of partner country Egypt, visitors were
invited to gain information on the current political situation in the country at
different social media platforms and to talk live online with Egypt. Dr. Christian
Göke, managing director of Messe Berlin summarised: “The ITB Berlin was
once again able to demonstrate its position as the number one knowledge
platform for the international travel industry.”
World 2012“. Das Wort, das klingt wie der Name
eines Internet-Start-ups, ist eines der aktuellen
Schlagworte des digitalen Marketings. Und als
solches, so die Überzeugung von Marktexperten,
auch für die Reisebranche hochinteressant. Was
immer gearteten Kanal.“ Klassische Webseiten,
global ausgerichteten Reisemarkt neue Chancen.
Austausch plus mobiler Zugriff plus Location Based
versteht. Jeder kann auf der Plattform eine persön-
liche Erlebnis-Tour oder -Aktivität anbieten und
dafür einen geringen finanziellen Betrag ansetzen.
Dies bringt nicht nur weltweit unterschiedlichste
Menschen zusammen, sondern eröffnet Reisenden
auch ungewöhnliche Einblicke und Erfahrungen
in den Destinationen Berlin, London, Amsterdam,
New York, Los Angeles und San Francisco. Viele der
etablierten Anbieter im Markt legen der sozialen
Vernetzung gegenüber allerdings noch
eine gewisse Scheu an
den Tag.
Insbesondere, was unliebsame oder manipulierbare
Kommentare im Netz betrifft. Schließlich geht es um
die eigene „Online Reputation“, die sorgsam beobachtet
und auch kommunikativ begleitet
werden sollte.
HolidayCheck, das größte
deutschsprachige Urlaubs-
bewertungsportal, musste
sich ähnlich wie TripAdvisor
oder Amazon vor Kurzem
noch mit dem Vorwurf
manipulierter Einträge auf der
Plattform auseinandersetzen. Doch
Patrick Feil, CEO von HolidayCheck,
betrachtet das Thema mittlerweile
offenbar relativ gelassen und hält
auch die Angst vieler Anbieter
vor Negativkommentaren für
weitgehend unbegründet:
„80 Prozent aller Bewertungen sind
positiv. Die Leute schreiben ja nicht nur,
wenn sie etwas schlechtmachen möchten“,
so Feil. Bewertungen durch User erachtet
er schon deshalb für wichtig, da Broschüren
und Kataloge ein leicht geschöntes Bild der
Wirklichkeit wiedergeben. Zunehmende
Hotelbewertungen:
der Online-Reisevermittler
HolidayCheck.
// A veteran in the
field of online hotel
reviews: the online
travel website and
opinion portal
HolidayCheck.
// Smartphones, mobile applications and communication in social networks
are now also profoundly affecting developments in the travel
industry. The “eTravel World” at this year’s ITB Berlin showed where the
field of digital brand communications is headed.
“SoLoMo“ was the key phrase used by discussion panellists at the “eTravel World
2012”. SoLoMo is actually one of the biggest buzzwords in contemporary digital
marketing, and market experts argue that this is exactly what makes it highly interesting
for the travel industry. The concept focuses on social (So), local (Lo) and
mobile (Mo) applications that interact online and open up new opportunities for
communication and commercial value creation. “SoLoMo implies first and foremost
interactivity, immediacy and ubiquity”, explains Christoph Bornschein, managing
director and co-founder of the digital brand communication agency “Torben, Lucie
und die gelbe Gefahr”. Bornschein continues: “Over the past two years, the market
has changed at an unbelievable pace. We’re seeing a shift away from the Internet as
a static site of information and more toward a flow of communication using whatever
channels are available.” In other words, Bornschein argues that traditional websites
are losing importance as immobile information platforms. As a result of mobile devices,
such as smartphones and tablets, the flow of content and the access to information
have expanded and become more dynamic.
Accessing airports via app, posting comments and photos on social networks like
Facebook and making ad-hoc online ratings on travel destinations: today, these
activities are a matter of course. And the numbers speak for themselves: more than
23 million Germans are already active Facebook users. According to a recent study
by Tomorrow Focus Media, 40 percent of mobile phone owners have a smart phone.
This new digital mobility is exactly what offers the global travel industry a wealth of
new opportunities. However, only a few travel providers have started effectively
using the new communicative opportunities. In addition to companies with larger
financial and personnel resources, it’s primarily start-ups that are making headlines
with innovative business ideas on the social Web. For example, myTaxi, an app that
was launched in Hamburg in March 2010 by Jan-Niclaus Mewes and Sven Johannes
Külper: the app is based on the simple yet insightful notion of bringing together taxi
drivers and clients via GPS. The client uses the app to order a taxi and is able to use
a “taxi radar” to see right away whether there’s one available near them. After that,
the client can rate their ride, save their favourite driver and – coming soon – also
make a cashless payment via smartphone. For their part, taxi drivers work independently
of any central unit and pay 79 cents to the company per ride.
The concept took off quickly and now the service is already available in more than
30 cities in Germany, Austria, Switzerland and Spain. Roughly 8,000 taxi drivers
are already participating – and the app download numbers have already passed the
hundred-thousand mark. myTaxi is the very embodiment of the SoLoMo formula, i.e.
the combination of social exchange plus mobile access plus location-based services.
Just like the Berlin-based start-up Gidsy: it sees itself as an “experience marketplace”
for trendsetters. Everyone is invited to submit a personal tour or activity on the platform
and to set a minimal price for their efforts. This not only brings very different
people together from all over the world, it also opens up unusual insights and experiences
to travellers in the targeted destinations of Berlin, London, Amsterdam,
New York, Los Angeles and San Francisco. Many established market providers still
seem hesitant with respect to social networking, especially when it comes to unpleasant
and easily manipulated online commentary. Indeed, it all comes down to a company’s
online reputation, which must be moni tored carefully and actively communicated.
HolidayCheck, the largest online travel rating website in the German-speaking world,
recently had to deal with accusations of manipulated ratings, along with colleagues
at TripAdvisor and Amazon. And yet, HolidayCheck CEO Patrick Feil is still relatively
relaxed about the topic. He argues that the fear of negative commentary is largely
unfounded and notes “80 percent of all ratings are positive. People don’t just give
feedback when they want to put things in a negative light”. Feil considers user evaluations
to be important, in particular because brochures and catalogues tend to
provide a somewhat one-sided image of reality. He argues that greater importance is
being given to the relevance of commentaries: “What is destined to become even
more important in the field of ratings in the future is the idea of creating similarity
with myself online. An amateur diver, for example, will most definitely get better
input from another diver rather than from a travel agent, even if the agent is wellversed
in the subject”.
Travel operator TUI is also focusing on online reviews with the help of a relaunched
Website that connects users with in-house specialists, experts from travel agencies
and also travel guides. “We made a conscious decision to keep the system open but
also to have the core of our community in the travel expert area”, explains Kerstin
Hartmann, managing director of TUI interactive. Hartmann also sees the possibility
of eventually linking the platform with social networks such as Facebook: “It is going
to be a tremendous yet exciting challenge to link the virtual world of Facebook with
the new TUI.com website and to develop intelligent models and mechanisms”,
explains Hartmann.
Brand expert Christoph Bornschein emphasises yet another key aspect that defines
current digital communication: “We shouldn’t spend too much time thinking about
which mobile device users will employ to access content. An application must be able
to operate no matter what the channel. Ultimately, it’s the client who’ll decide how
Vertrauen ist alles
// It’s all About Trust
Marke. Natürlich können große Unternehmen mehr in
digitale Aktivitäten investieren als kleine und entsprechende
Ressourcen dafür freischalten. Fluggesellschaften
beispielsweise sind hier hervorragend aufgestellt.
Und kleine Unternehmen, was können die tun?
Unsere Recherchen haben gezeigt, dass Reisende
Freunden und der Familie als Informationsquelle am
meisten vertrauen ebenso wie den Internetpräsenzen
der Reiseziele selbst. Dann erst folgen die großen
Suchmaschinen wie Google und Yahoo und Informationen
von Drittanbietern wie Expedia. Vertrauen
Vertrauen
Unternehmen
sollten versuchen, diese emotional tiefere
Ebene zu erreichen.
Welche Rolle spielt im Social-Media-Bereich
die Relevanz der Inhalte?
Sie ist ausgesprochen wichtig. Derzeit findet man
so viel Müll im Netz. 25 Postings am Tag nutzen mir
nichts, wenn sie mein Publikum nicht erreichen. So
etwas muss sensibel angegangen werden. Nicht alle
meine Freunde auf Facebook sind wirklich meine
Freunde. Und nicht von allen nehme ich Empfehlungen
an. Deswegen ist die Relevanz der Inhalte
entscheidend, und auch das Timing ist wichtig.
// Laura Mandala on communication mechanisms in social networks
and why authentic content is better received on the Internet as well.
What opportunities do social networks offer the travel industry.
What should companies pay attention to?
Almost 40 percent of US citizens and more than 60 percent of people outside the
USA already use social media when they travel. The L2 Digital IQ Index ® authored
by the think tank L2 evaluates the digital efforts of travel brands across four
criteria: website, digital marketing, social media and mobile. Its findings show
that there is a direct relationship between a company’s digital IQ and its success.
Of course, large companies such as airlines are in a better position than small
companies when it comes to being able to activate further resources and invest
more in digital activities.
What can smaller companies do?
Laura Mandala, Managing
Director des Marktforschungsunternehmens
Mandala Research. // Laura
Mandala, managing director
of the market research
company Mandala Research.
www.mandalaresearch.com
Our research shows that travellers trust friends and family most of all as sources
of information, just above the Web pages of the travel destination itself.
These are followed by major search engines, such as Google and Yahoo, and
information from third parties such as Expedia. In other words, when getting
people in social networks to make decisions, trust plays a key role.
What does this mean for companies? Trust is not something you can
build overnight.
In the field of social media, there are superficial levels and deeper ones. An
example of a superficial level would be when a traveller recommends a brand
knowing that he or she can win a prize. A deeper and more authentic recommendation
takes place if I’ve travelled to a location that I really enjoyed and
then share these experiences with friends and family. Companies should try
to access this deeper emotional level.
What role does content relevance play in the field of social media?
It is very important. There is so much trash on the Web these days, and
25 postings per day aren’t worth anything if they don’t reach their target
audience. These things need to be approached in a sensible manner. Not all
of my Facebook friends are truly my friends. And I’m not really interested in
all of their recommendations. And this is exactly why content relevance – in
addition to timing – is decisive.
Stimmen vom Buyers Circle
// Statements from the Buyers Circle
// The Buyers Circle – a new and exclusive meeting point for international buyers – enjoyed its successful
debut at this year’s ITB Berlin. Roughly 500 operational-level buyers from small companies all the way
to large corporations active in the international travel industry registered for and benefited from a series
of exclusive service offers, including separate conference rooms and Internet-ready working spaces, regular
ITB Berlin info updates and free hotel and ITB shuttle.
with emailed information pertaining to events and news regarding
ITB Berlin. On a personal level the Buyers Circle has been extremely
beneficial, not only in providing speedy access to the event itself,
but also by providing a comfortable, quiet area in which to conduct
business, away from the hustle and bustle of the Halls.
next year.
All die
// With Buyers Circle, I was being updated regularly on the progress
of the fair. I was invited for important functions and talks. It helped
me to get to know what was happening in the world without delay.
With this information provided, I was able to plan my trip better.
That was indirectly helping my company to save time and money.
All privileges provided meant so much to me: Early check in, lounge
facilities etc. It has also prompted me with a few good appointment
requests by email.
advantage of next year. For the first time ever, we had a space that
we could return to for business meetings in a more relaxed and
to an increase in productivity. This isn’t something that can be
expressed in numbers. The ITB Berlin is an important forum for us,
zur Industriemesse erwartet, darunter
sämtliche Marktführer der Healthcare-
IT. Und viele haben ihre Standfläche
im Vergleich zum Vorjahr noch
vergrößert. Der Branchentreff, initiiert
über die aktuellen Entwicklungen der
Informationstechnologie im Gesundheitswesen,
wobei die Schnittstellen
Unter dem Leitmotto „Strategien entwickeln.
führende Experten in 13 Kongress-Sessions die
wichtigsten Themen der Healthcare IT.
Besucher können sich in Messeführungen zu speziellen
The number of bookings for this year’s conhIT (Connecting Healthcare IT) is higher
than ever before: over 250 exhibitors are expected at the Industrial Fair alone, includ-
the size of their display areas as compared to last year. In April, this leading event
organised by the German Association of Healthcare IT Vendors Industry (bvitg) will
once again provide information on current developments in the sector, with an
increasing focus on links to medical technology and the theme of telematics. The
many doctors and decision makers from IT departments, management, medical and
möchte“, so YOU-Leiter Daniel Barkowski.
Lebhaft dürfte es vor allem am Samstagabend
werden: Dann nämlich steigt eine große Abi-Party,
sind.
// In contrast to previous years, children and adolescents will meet
already in June rather than in September at Europe’s leading youth fair
known simply as “YOU” in Berlin.
Ever wanted to try a new sport or find out what “Floorball” and “Headis” are?
Then head over to this year’s YOU. In 2012, the focus at this youth fair for music,
sports, lifestyle and education will be on the latest sporting trends, which you can
either watch or try out yourself. Visitors can also attend competitions like the
“Fastbreak Parcouring World Championship” and learn how to “b-boy” at the
dance academy organised by “Flying Steps”, a world champion break dancing
troupe.
The 2012 YOU will also feature a song contest, cool personalised styling tips and
concerts showcasing stars and newcomers. For young people already thinking
about their future, a number of companies, educational institutions, associations
and institutes will be on hand to provide information on themes such as health,
business, politics, environment and society. Indeed, as YOU manager Daniel
Barkowski notes, the large and enthusiastic turnout in 2011 showed that “young
people are eager to work together on their future”.
Saturday night promises to be lots of fun at the huge “Abi-Party” to which roughly
200 Berlin schools are invited.
Zweifache Berlin-Premiere
// Double Berlin Premiere
// The PANORAMA fashion fair will celebrate its premiere in July 2012.
It will also be the first event staged at the new “Berlin ExpoCenter Airport”,
which will debut at the same time.
PANORAMA will focus on women’s and men’s fashions, shoes and accessories in
the “high-volume segment”. This brand-new Berlin fair will give tradeshow visitors
and national and international high-volume brands an innovative platform for the
presentation and distribution of fashion collections. PANORAMA will take place on
roughly 40,000 square metres at the new Berlin ExpoCenter Airport located directly
at the forthcoming Berlin Brandenburg Airport (BER).
PANORAMA is organised by PANORAMA GmbH and Messe Berlin GmbH and will
take place twice a year in January and July following the rhythm of the prominent
Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week Berlin. The new tradeshow sees its role as complementing
the two other leading fairs, PREMIUM and Bread & Butter. These early
dates on the international fashion calendar allow the industry to be the first to
present the styles and trends of the approaching seasons.
Dr. Christian Göke, Chief Operating Officer of Messe Berlin GmbH, is enthusiastic
about having PANORAMA as the first fair at the new Berlin ExpoCenter Airport. As
he notes: “It will showcase the unique advantages of our new event complex and
help publicise it among the public”. These advantages include the short distance
from plane to trade stand, the site’s tremendous flexibility and a mere 30 minute
trip to the centre of one of the most exciting cities in the world.
Gemeinsam gegen Rheuma
// Together against Rheumatism
Beim
wissenschaftlichen Programm geht es vor allem
darum, Innovationen und Grundlagenforschung
in die klinische Praxis umzusetzen. Für Betroffene
veranstaltet die Organisation PARE (People with
Arthritis/Rheumatism) zusammen mit Health
Professionals Diskussionsrunden.
// The Congress of the European League Against Rheumatism (EULAR)
takes place in a different European city each year. This time, experts
and patients will meet once again on the Congress Area South of
Messe Berlin.
The EULAR Congress is considered the most important rheumatology summit in
the world. Initiated 12 years ago in Nice, the goal of the congress is to improve
methods of rheumatism treatment, prevention and rehabilitation and to make life
easier for sufferers and their families.
Rheumatologists, health professionals, pharmaceutical industry representatives
and patients will meet once again this year in Berlin to exchange ideas and information
about the current state of research and training and also about the social
aspects of rheumatism. The science program will focus on how to transform
research findings and innovation into clinical practice. For rheumatism sufferers,
the organisation known as People with Arthritis/Rheumatism (PARE) has prepared
a series of discussion roundtables featuring health professionals.
The “Poster Exhibition” is regarded by many as the heart of the congress. The
exhibition area showcases first publications of the latest research studies. There
will also be expert guided tours on which six to seven posters are presented
personally by the authors and discussed in a group of maximum 25 people.
Jahr ihres Bestehens
mehr als 420.000 Besucher
an. Neu in diesem Jahr ist auch
die „Straße der Bundesländer“.
Erstmals können Besucher hier
in sieben aufeinanderfolgenden
Hallen 14 Bundesländer Deutschlands
durchwandern, dabei in
vom Bundeslandwirtschaftsministerium in Auftrag
gegebenen EMNID-Umfrage fast jeder zweite
allerdings nichts gebraten. Er steht mit Schürze und
gezücktem Messer an seinem Stand und bietet luftgetrocknete
Salami, „Stracke“ oder „Feldgieker“,
zum Probieren an. Sein Pflaumenmus oder den
„Thüringer Küchensenf“ süßt er mit Honig und
Rübenzucker aus der Region. „Der Senf ist steingemahlen
– und bringt Energie in den Magen“, so
Schiller.
gegründeten „Kraftsdorfer Wurstfabrik“ an. Seit
„Schierker Feuerstein“. Wolfgang Bleck aus dem
niedersächsischen Dannenberg guckt sich hier
in aller Ruhe um. Zu Hause ernährt er sich am
liebsten von regionalem Obst, Gemüse und Wild:
„Da weiß man, was man hat“, so der passionierte
Jäger. Auf der „Straße der Bundesländer“ lässt
er sich treiben und inspirieren. „Ich besuche die
Grüne Woche jedes Jahr, um zu schauen, was
es Neues gibt“, erklärt er.
// “Surprisingly surprising” was the slogan of the 2012 International
Green Week in Berlin. Among the highlights of the world’s largest
consumer show for agriculture, food and horticulture was the “Federal
States Street”. insightBerlin went on a culinary tour through Germany’s
14 federal states and covered a route of roughly 3.8 kilometres of trade
floor space.
It’s just past 10 am and only a couple of minutes since the International Green
Week Berlin (IGW) opened its doors to the public on this sunny January morning.
The cloakroom is quickly filling up with coats and jackets as the trade
show visitors get ready to explore the massive array of products in 26 trade
fair halls. In the “Livestock Hall”, horses, piglets, cows and lambs wait to be
admired. Visitors to the “International Floral Hall” marvel at the most beautiful
construction site in the world showcasing orchids, roses and daffodils. It’s
no surprise that the world’s largest consumer show for agriculture, food and
horticulture – now in its 86th year – attracts more than 420,000 visitors. New
this year is the “Federal States Street”, which invites guests to journey through
Germany’s 14 federal states in seven consecutive halls. It’s a pleasurable trip
where everyone can experience the distinctive ambiance and regional highlights
of each state over the course of 3.8 kilometres.
The “regional” theme is key at this year’s IGW. According to an EMNID survey
commissioned by Germany’s Federal ministry of Economics, almost one in every
two Germans buys food products from their own region; and almost 80 percent
of consumers are willing to pay more to do so. An increasing number of national
and international manufacturers are becoming aware of this. For example,
at this year’s IGW, the region of Punjab in Pakistan displayed a special Internet
function with which visitors can trace a food product back to its origin – all
the way from the producing farm, through each growth cycle and including the
types of soil and logistics companies involved.
In the Thuringia Hall the smell of grilled sausage or “Rostbratwurst” permeates
the air. However, there’s no grilling going on at the stand of Holger
Schiller, owner of “Eichsfeld-Feinkost”. With a full apron and a knife in hand,
he offers samples of air-dried salami, “Stracke” and “Feldgieker”. He also adds
honey and beet sugar from the region to his plum jam and “Thuringian Cooking
Mustard”. “The mustard is stone-ground and gives your stomach a boost of
energy”, Schiller notes. And this is exactly what visitors need on their culinary
journey through 14 federal states. A couple of stands later, a burly young man
named Anton in a butchers apron loudly extols the virtues of salami specialities
from the “Kraftsdorfer Wurstfabrik” founded in 1893. He’s been at the stand
since 6 am and is already losing his voice at noon.
Visitors to the Saxony Anhalt Hall are greeted by a huge photo of the
Magde burg Cathedral in addition to more than 70 exhibitors. Directly next
to the entrance, a throng of people crowds the stand of the “Quedlinburger
StiftsGarten” from the Harz region. Here you’ll find seeds of all kinds, whether
for herbs, flower or vegetables. And it’s only fitting seeing as the gardening
season is about to start. The wooden booths are laden with sausage specialities
from the Harz next to the always popular “Schierker Feuerstein” herb liqueur.
Wolfgang Bleck from Dannenberg in Lower Saxony takes his time at the stands.
At home, he prefers to eat fruits, vegetables and meat from the region: “That
way, you know what you’re getting,” says the passionate hunter. He makes
his way through the “Federal States Street” looking for even more inspiration:
“I come to the Green Week each year to see what’s new”, he explains.
Further on, in the Bavarian Hall, there’s a palpable beer-tent atmosphere.
Against a white-blue backdrop, Dirndl-clad waitresses dexterously manoeuvre
trays of pork knuckles and beer through the crowds as a three-piece band in
traditional costumes plays on the stage. Most popular at the stands are the
Hirschhornschnitzereien, Erdapfelschmankerln, Brezn, Weißwürste and Allgäuer
cheese. This typical Bavarian ambience is always popular, as Josef Esterer,
chairman of the “Urlaub auf dem Bauernhof” (farm holidays) community in
Rupertwinkel-Berchtesgaden confirms: “More and more families are seeking
out that special Bavarian charm and want to spend their holidays in our region.”
It’s very busy at the Brandenburg Hall, as well, and the diversity on display is
enormous and characteristic of the region. Next to the famous Spreewald pickles
are rose syrup, salami pralines, asparagus beer, Beelitz snacks, ostrich meat
and the premiere of the “Märkische Sandbüchse”, a pastry made this year to
celebrate the 300th birthday of Frederick the Great. Uwe Müller is responsible
for serving the beer from the “Braumanufaktur Forsthaus Templin” in Potsdam.
He is visibly proud of the locally produced product: “All of our beers are brewed
according to an old craftsman’s tradition. We’ve also been organic since 2007”,
he explains.
The tour moves on to North Rhine-
Westphalia, where visitors can
view more than 150 regional
apple varieties. It then moves past
Lower Saxony, where three
farmers in historical costumes
demonstrate old threshing methods.
Then, it’s on to Bremen,
where not only the famous
“Town Musicians” await but
also a “Senator Breakfast”.
Next up is a trip along the
coast to Schleswig-Holstein,
where visitors can try smoked
auroch meat. And, and, and. After a tour
of the 14 federal states, feet are tired but both mind and body are full
of new sensations. Evening has arrived and the visitors head contentedly out into
the cold January night. Only a couple of coats remain hanging in the cloakroom …
FRUIT LOGISTICA:
Verpackungsmaterial in
jeder Form und Farbe.
// Major theme at
Packaging material in all
shapes and colours.
versorgen. Bei der parallel stattfindenden FRESH-
CONEX hingegen stehen frische Convenience-
10 Milliarden US-Dollar steigern will.
Faktoren: „Dank unserem optimalen Klima
können wir die Produktionsmenge und die Vielfalt
der Früchte ohne Probleme steigern“, so Mehmet
ates, Vorsitzender des Mersin Agriculture
Engineering Chamber und Vorstandsmitglied vom
Turkey Citrus Council.
weltweit beliebten Zitronensorte „Lamas“ zeigt.
„Dies
geschieht fast ausschließlich mit Maschinen aus
Deutschland“, so Kavak.
Agrarmarkt Informations-Gesellschaft mbH (AMI)
auf Basis des GfK-Haushaltspanels herausfand,
konsumiert jeder deutsche Privathaushalt bisher
jährlich nur knapp 140 Kilogramm frisches Obst und
Gemüse. Das lässt noch deutlich Platz für mehr –
auch für Zitronen aus der Türkei.
Zitrusfrüchte und Granatäpfel aus der
Türkei erfreuen sich auch in Deutschland
immer größerer Beliebtheit. // Citrus
fruits and pomegranates from Turkey
are enjoying increasing popularity
in Germany, as well.
// FRUIT LOGISTICA 2012 attracted more firms from the international fresh
produce trade than ever before. And this year's partner country, Turkey, had a
significant presence with fruit and vegetable producers as well as firms from
the packaging sector – by 2023 the country hopes ultimately to increase its
global fruit exports by a factor of five.
Whether pomegranates, grapes, citrus fruits, tomatoes or peppers – many fruits we
buy in german supermarkets and shops come from Turkey. For this country on the
Bosphorus, Germany is the second largest export market for fruits and vegetables
after the Russian Federation. In 2010 alone its fruit exports to Germany reached
USD 203 million. It was therefore no coincidence that Turkey was this year's partner
country at FRUIT LOGISTICA, where it had its largest participation yet with
38 companies exhibiting on 1,000 square metres of space.
FRUIT LOGISTICA covers the whole value chain including the complex logistics needed
to provide people in every corner of the world with fresh fruits and vegetables
of the highest possible quality in every season of the year. At FRESHCONEX, which
runs simultaneously, the focus is on fresh convenience products and themes such as
the preparation, packaging and cooling of fresh fruits and vegetables.
The entire international fruit trade industry convenes at FRUIT LOGISTICA in Berlin,
including fruit and vegetable producers, the packaging industry, importers and
exporters as well as wholesalers and retailers. “For the industry, FRUIT LOGISTICA
is the world's most important marketing platform for cultivating contacts and initiating
business relations”, Dr. Christian Göke, COO of Messe Berlin GmbH summed
up. It is also an ideal marketing platform for Turkey, which hopes to increase fruit
and vegetable exports from its current level of USD 2.1 billion to USD 10 billion by
2023. In addition to more advertising, the country will focus above all on natural
factors: “Thanks to our optimal climate, we can increase production volumes and
our variety of fruits with little difficulty”, says Mehmet Ates, chairman of the
Mersin Agriculture Engineering Chamber and board member of the Turkey Citrus
Council. Diversity in production is important as consumer tastes vary from country
to country.
The route that fruits travel upon export is a long one requiring sophisticated
transport solutions. This is illustrated by the internationally sought-after variety of
lemon known as “Lamas“. This citrus fruit is easy to store and transport, tastes
good and has hardly any seeds. It thrives only in the area west of the city of Mersin,
where more than two-thirds of all Turkish lemons ripen. In this region's mild
Mediterranean climate, trees tend to grow for three to five years until they blossom
for the first time and bear fruit.
A Lamas tree can live to be 60 years old. Each year exporters buy the fruit directly
from the tree, meaning that the export companies, not the farm owners, arrange
for the picking and carting away of the lemons. These companies send their own
people to the harvest, who wax the fruit on the spot, pack them in wooden
crates and load them onto refrigerated lorries.
The next stop on the journey is Cappadocia in central Anatolia, which is primarily
known for its cave churches in Göreme, which are carved out of the soft tuff. Not
far from there, near the city of Nevsehir, Turkish fruit dealers use these unique
rock formations as natural storage facilities for their lemons. “If market prices
are low, exporters can store the fruit there for as long it takes for the prices to
rise again“ Ali Kavak, chairman of the Mediterranean Exporter Unions explains.
What we do
before 9.30 am!
www.bubblebridge.com/reserved
i d e a s b e c o m e r e a l i t y
“Thanks to the good climate and the natural warehouses, Turkey can deliver fresh
fruit all year round.“
If an order comes from Berlin for a large amount of lemons, the fruits are inspected
for irregularities right there in Nevsehir, sorted by size and packed into boxes.“
This is done almost exclusively using machines from Germany“ says Kavak.
Meanwhile, a laboratory authorised by the Ministry for Food, Agriculture and Livestock
takes a sample of the lemons and tests them for pesticide residues, among
other things. Provided they meet German food guidelines, the citrus fruits are
then loaded onto a refrigerated lorry, which then has its doors sealed and makes
its way over land to Berlin – even a straight line between these two locations is
as much as 2,300 kilometres.
At the wholesale market in Berlin the importer then finally receives the ordered
lemons and sells them on, for example, to a greengrocer around the corner. These
lemons make up just some of the roughly five million tonnes of fresh fruit imported
annually to Germany from abroad. By comparison: little more than one
million tonnes of fresh fruit sold in German shops are produced domestically. The
Agrarmarkt Informations-Gesellschaft mbH (AMI) has found that, currently, each
private household in Germany consumes just under 140 kilograms of fresh fruit
and vegetables annually. That leaves substantial room for more – including more
lemons from Turkey.
bautec 2012.
Hersteller,
Handwerker, Planer, Projektentwickler und
Bauherren tauschen sich hier über die neuesten
Baustoffe und -systeme sowie den aktuellen Stand
von Energie, Heizungs- und Klimatechnik aus.
Gemäß ihrem diesjährigen Motto „In die Zukunft
bauen“ fand die internationale Fachmesse für
Bauen und Gebäudetechnik wieder im Verbund
mit der SolarEnergy statt, einer der international
anerkanntesten Veranstaltungen für erneuerbare
Energien. Auch die BioGas World, Build IT, GRÜN-
Neu in diesem Jahr:
das Forum für die Immobilien- und Wohnungswirtschaft
(FIW), das mit Vorträgen wie „Potenziale
großer Wohnsiedlungen für Energiewende und
Klimawandel“ auf große Resonanz stieß.
Top-Themen der bautec 2012 waren Nachhaltigkeit,
Energieeffizienz und Klimaschutz. Viele
Aussteller zeigten innovative Materialien und
intelligente Gebäudetechnik und reagierten
damit auf die gestiegene Nachfrage von Investoren
und Hausbesitzern in diesen Bereichen.
Insgesamt zogen Aussteller, Verbände und Fachbesucher
zum Abschluss der bautec eine positive
Bilanz. Werner Mocke, Direktor der Fachmesse:
„Mit diesem Erfolg untermauert die bautec Berlins
führende Position als Baumesse-Standort im
Nordosten Deutschlands.“
// Sustainability, energy efficiency and climate protection were the
leading themes at the 2012 bautec in February. By focusing on these
topics, the leading international tradeshow for building and construction
technology was responding to ecological demands in new home
construction and renovation.
Every two years, the bautec in Berlin brings together representatives of the national
and international building construction industry, including manufacturers, skilled
craftsmen, planners and project developers, to exchange information on the latest
materials and systems as well as on energy, heating and air conditioning technology.
In keeping with this year’s motto of “Building for the Future”, the bautec was held
once again in association with SolarEnergy, a leading international event for renewable
energies. Also represented under the bautec umbrella were the BioGas World,
Build IT, GRÜNBAU BERLIN und metall IT tradeshows. New this year was the “Forum
for the Real Estate and Housing Industry” (FIW), which received a very positive response
for its focus on “The Potential of Large Housing Projects for Energy Conservation
and Climate Change”, among others.
The top themes at bautec 2012 were sustainability, energy efficiency and climate
protection. Exhibitors showcased innovative materials and intelligent building technologies,
both of which are in increasing demand by investors and homeowners. The
response of exhibitors, associations and tradeshow visitors to this year’s bautec was
highly positive. As Werner Mocke, director of the international tradeshow, noted:
“bautec’s success underlines Berlin’s status as a leading location for construction
tradeshows in northeast Germany”.
Laser Optics Berlin
19. bis 21. März 2012
Ausstellungsfläche: 5.500 Quadratmeter
Aussteller: 145 aus 12 Ländern
Fachbesucher: 3.000, davon rund 30 Prozent
aus dem Ausland
Die Laser Optics Berlin steht für zukunftsweisende
Ideen, technische Trends und Weltneuheiten bei
optischen Technologien. Dass die alle zwei Jahre stattfindende
Veranstaltung auch international einen hohen
Stellenwert besitzt, bewies in diesem Jahr der „Optics
and Photonics Congress“. Auf der Konferenz, die von
der Optical Society of America (OSA) ausgerichtet
besonders schnell. Ebenso wie in der Region
Berlin-Brandenburg, in der rund 400 Unternehmen
und Forschungseinrichtungen in der optischen
Industrie sowie in der Mikrosystemtechnik tätig
sind – Tendenz steigend.
// Laser Optics Berlin is a leading optical technology gathering held
every two years. This past March the fair welcomed three new co-
oprative partners: microsys berlin, the Polish capital of Warsaw and
the Optical Society of America (OSA).
Laser Optics Berlin takes place every two years and stands for innovative ideas, tech
trends and world premieres in optical technology. This year’s “Optics and Photonics
Congress” proved once again that the event enjoys tremendous international stature.
At the conference organised by the Optical Society of America (OSA), leading re-
searchers spoke on current developments in the field of quantum information and
structural research in the ultra-short field.
This year, the “microsys berlin” fair for micro-optics and micro-optic systems, which
was launched in 2001, took place for the first time as part of the Laser Optics Berlin.
To mark the occasion, microsys berlin shifted its focus to the presentation of common
application fields for optical technologies and microsystems technology.
This year’s partner city, Warsaw, brought together German and Polish representatives
from the fields of economics, politics and R&D at their joint stand. Indeed, the market
for optical technologies is developing at a rapid pace in the Polish capital – as it is in
the Berlin-Brandenburg region, which has roughly 400 companies and R&D institutes
working in optical and microsystems engineering. And the numbers continue to grow.
1926 in Berlin gegründet, kündigte unlängst an,
sich mit der Eröffnung des neuen Hauptstadt-
flughafens wieder stärker an ihrem Geburtsort
engagieren zu wollen. Wolfgang Weber, Leiter der
Konzernkommunikation, nennt die Gründe: „Der
neue Flughafen BER schafft Wachstumspotenzial
und eine Zukunftsfähigkeit, die es im überfüllten
Tegel einfach nicht gab. Das gilt vor allem für die
Passagierbeförderung, aber auch für andere Konzernbereiche
wie etwa das Simulatorzentrum in
Berlin-Schönefeld oder die Lufthansa Technik, die
auf dem BER gerade eine zusätzliche Flugzeug-
Wartungshalle errichtet.“ In Zahlen ausgedrückt
bedeutet das: eine Flotte von 15 Airbus-Maschinen,
38 Nonstop-Verbindungen von Berlin nach
Europa und Nahost sowie 500 neue Arbeitsplätze
im ersten Schritt.
Auch für Unternehmen im jungen eTravel-Segment
ist die Spreemetropole mittlerweile ein ideales
Umfeld.
Deutschen Tourismuswirtschaft (BTW) beurteilt
Hauptstadt weiterhin genau das findet, was
er sucht – vom temporär installierten Camping-
// Berlin is one of the most popular travel destinations in Europe. The
city’s unique flair attracts not only tourists from all over the world but
also an increasing number of travel industry providers as well. As a
result, tourism has become one of the most important economic
sectors in the capital region.
The 40 cubes standing in the middle of the grounds of the Columbia outdoor
swimming pool in the Berlin district of Neukölln are almost three metres high.
These large wooden boxes are covered on the outside with Berlin photo motifs.
Inside, guests will find freshly made beds as well as heating and electricity.
These so-called SCUBEs are the latest opportunity available to tourists looking
for mobility, individuality and sustainability at an affordable price. Less adventurous
visitors will be more interested in the forthcoming Waldorf Astoria located
about ten kilometres northwest of the SCUBEs near Bahnhof Zoo and scheduled
to open soon. The 232-room luxury hotel in Berlin’s City-West district stands for
pure luxury and will be the Hilton chain’s first five-star hotel in Germany. The
President Suite at the Waldorf and cool camping in a BBQ atmosphere – the two
options couldn’t be more different. And yet both have an eye on the future and
can be found in the middle of the city. This is precisely why they are such good
examples of the many facets and contrasts that make Berlin so unique.
Tourism in Berlin is booming. The city recorded more than 22 million overnight
stays and almost 10 million guests last year, placing it in the third spot in Europe
directly behind London and Paris. With gross revenues of roughly 9 billion euros
and a workforce of 230,000, tourism is now one of the city’s most important
economic sectors. The industry is also gaining in importance in the neighbouring
state of Brandenburg, which offers a charming mixture of nature and cultural
highlights. With more than ten million overnight stays per year, the state has
established itself as a major tourist destination. The opening of the new BER
international airport in June is set to strengthen this positive trend even further,
with a clear increase in the number of international guests expected for the
entire region.
The industry’s major players, including Deutsche Bahn AG and Air Berlin, have
long since been aware of this trend and now have company headquarters in
Berlin. Lufthansa, which was founded here in 1926, recently announced plans to
focus even more of its activities in its city of origin after the new capital airport
opens. Head of Corporate Communications Wolfgang Weber explains why: “The
new BER airport will create growth potential and long-term viability that was
not possible in the smaller Tegel Airport. This applies first and foremost to
passenger travel but also to other corporate divisions, such as the Simulator
Centre in Berlin-Schönefeld and Lufthansa Technik, which is currently building
an additional maintenance hangar at BER.” In terms of numbers, this means a
fleet of 15 Airbus aircraft, 38 non-stop connections from Berlin to Europe and
the Middle East and 500 new jobs in the first phase alone.
Berlin has also emerged as an ideal environment for companies in the burgeon-
ing eTravel segment. In addition to established providers, such as Expedia.de,
a number of fresh start-ups have also settled in the city. 9flats.com, for example,
has been arranging accommodation in private flats and vacation homes for
roughly one year. Managing director Stephan Uhrenbacher considers Berlin an
attractive location particularly due to the large pool of young and talented creative
professionals: “First of all, the cost of life is still low compared with other
European cities. Secondly, Berlin is unquestionably the most exciting city in the
world today. This makes it a magnet for young talents with new ideas.” Germany’s
largest tour operator TUI has taken a similar approach: in February, it moved its
entire online division – TUI interactive – from Hannover to Berlin-Mitte. As TUI
spokesperson Susanne Stünckel explains: “Our goal is to become the market
leader online as well, and in order to do so we need a fertile environment where
first-class online specialists can cavort and inspire each other. She argues further
that “no other city has seen so many leading tech companies and Internet specialists
set up shop in the past several years as Berlin.”
Nicole von Stockert from the Federal Association of the German Tourist Industry
(BTW) also has an optimistic outlook on Berlin’s future as a tourist destination:
“The city’s self-imposed goal of increasing the number of overnight stays to 30
million annually by 2020 is ambitious but absolutely attainable.” The potential is
there, she argues. And the best way to meet this ambitious goal is if every visitor
to the capital continues to find what they’re looking for, whether it’s temporary
camping cubes for urban individualists or a President Suite for jetsetters.
Grünes Leben zwischen
Bauten und Brachen
// Lush nature amid
city structures and urban
wasteland
In erster
rausbekommen“, berichtet Bangert stolz. Den für
viele noch ungewohnten Stadthonig verkauft das
Hotel auch in Gläsern – ein süßeres Mitbringsel
aus Berlin gibt es kaum.
// Berlin’s cooperative gardens are in full bloom. With or without a
green thumb, everyone is welcome to join in urban gardening. One
Berlin hotel manager is even climbing onto the rooftop to harvest the
sweet gold of honey bees.
Austere concrete buildings and firewalls rise into the sky – indeed, Berlin’s Moritzplatz
in Kreuzberg is not necessarily the city’s most beautiful site. By comparison, the
Prinzessinnengarten next to it seems utterly enchanted. Here, under Robinia blossoms
on roughly 6,000 square-metres of fallow land, an oasis of plants and flowers
rises out of roughly 4,000 discarded bakers’ crates, 500 rice sacks and assorted food
cartons.
The driving force behind this green urban refuge is the non-profit organisation
Nomadisch Grün. As the name suggests, this gardening space incorporates the
notion of mobility, especially in view of the fact that its rental contract with the city
is temporary. In fact, the primary goal of the Prinzessinnengarten, which was
Mobile Anzucht im Prinzessinnengarten:
In Tetra Paks reifen Kräuter und Gemüsesetzlinge heran.
// Mobile nurseries at the Prinzessinnengarten:
herb and vegetable seedlings flourish in food cartons.
brought to life by Robert Shaw and Marco Clausen, was to create a space for people
to work, learn and relax together. In other words, a social and ecological garden
where each individual can plant their own fruits and vegetables and where everyone
helps each other. “I rent my own garden plot elsewhere, but the fences and rules
there just ruin the fun”, says Robert Shaw, referring to one of the fundamental
reasons why urban gardening is becoming increasingly popular in the capital.
The Prinzessinnengarten is not the only location of its kind in Berlin. The city’s Interkultur
Foundation lists roughly 20 intercultural gardens where people of all ages,
nationalities and educational levels cultivate open city spaces together. Best known
among them is the Allmende-Kontor, which arose on the grounds of the former
Tempelhof Airport as part of the urban planning project “Tempelhofer Freiheit”.
Groups made up mostly of residents from the neighbouring district of Neukölln have
met here since April 2011 to work in teams on their own tomatoes, onions and
radishes.
Across the city, on the roof of the Westin Grand Hotel at Friedrichstrasse/Unter den
Linden, general manager Rainer Bangert who is also is planning a roughly 80 m² herb
garden at the hotel, is tending to the four bee colonies that have been producing
organic honey for the hotel’s breakfast buffet for the past year. “Last year, we generated
125 kilograms”, notes Bangert proudly. This unusual urban honey is also on
sale in glasses at the hotel – and it would be hard to find a sweeter souvenir of Berlin.
leer.
mieten. High-Speed-W-LAN und ein junges,
kreatives Umfeld inbegriffen.
Coworking, also das flexible und preisgünstige
Arbeiten mit Gleichgesinnten in offenen Räumlichkeiten,
existiert seit ein paar Jahren auch in
anderen Metropolen.
viele ortsunabhängig arbeitende Dienstleister an,
denen Mobilität und der Austausch mit anderen
Kreativen wichtig ist. Rund 30 Coworking-Spaces
Arbeitsumfeldern angekommen“, berichtet
Wostel-Gründerin Chuente Noufena.
Generell bieten Coworking-Spaces verschiedene
Mietoptionen. Man kann Monatsbeiträge zahlen,
meist aber auch Tagestickets erwerben. Gegen
Aufpreis lässt sich häufig ein fester Arbeitsplatz
mieten, ansonsten gilt eine „Clean Desk Policy“:
Nach Feierabend wird der Arbeitsplatz sauber
und leer hinterlassen. Wer Extras wie Drucker
oder Schließfächer benötigt, kann diese meist
separat hinzubuchen.
// The clichéd image of members of the so-called “digital Bohème”
sitting in trendy cafés sipping lattes and working on their notebooks
has run its course. Instead, the mot du jour is “coworking”. A number
of locations in Berlin offer independent professionals stylish yet
comfortable short-term working spaces at affordable flat rates.
The large box-like 1970s-style building complex on Brunnenstrasse in Berlin-Mitte
is visible from afar. Many of the huge ground-floor shop windows stand empty.
Berlin creatives just love this kind of open space. And that's exactly why the “Supermarkt
Studios”, Berlin’s latest coworking space for freelancers, start-ups and small
companies, can be found here. Starting at 150 euros per month or 12 euros per day,
independent professionals can rent work space that includes high-speed WLAN in
one of the four two-storey units.
Coworking is the term used to describe a flexible and affordable shared working
environment with like-minded professionals in open rooms. As in other big cities,
the trend has been around for many years, but the movement is truly booming in
Berlin due to the city’s dynamism and its ability to attract a steady flow of independent
professionals for whom mobility and exchange with other creatives is important.
Berlin now has roughly 30 coworking spaces – and the number continues to
grow. These days, 200 “co-workers” go in and out at the “betahaus” in Kreuzberg
– already one of Berlin’s most established providers.
The “Wostel” working space was set up one year ago not far away in a former
vacuum factory in the trendy Neukölln neighbourhood of “Kreuzkölln” (see page
50). The site’s three comfortable vintage-style working spaces can be rented for
10 euros per day. Companies are also invited to book the conference room for
brainstorming or strategy meetings. “The idea of working outside of established
company structures as a way of finding new inspiration has also arrived in traditional
work environments”, reports Wostel founder Chuente Noufena.
Coworking spaces generally offer variable rental opportunities, including monthly
and/or daily options. For an additional charge, professionals can also rent a permanent
window spot. Apart from that, the “Clean Desk Policy” dictates that when the
work day is over, the working space must be left clean and empty. Anyone needing
extras such as a printer or lockers can rent these separately.
The “raumstation” located in a former porcelain factory in Berlin-Moabit proves
that coworking in Berlin is just as diverse as the city itself. Here, Michael Kloos and
his architectural office created a work oasis for roughly 40 people on four differently
designed floors. At a net cost of 195 euros per month, the fee for a work space is
indeed higher than at most of the other providers – but the proximity to Berlin’s
Central Train Station is included in the price.
and “Berlin Master Chefs’ Shooting Star of the Year 2011“ Matthias Gleiß celebrates “New Berlin
Cuisine“ with an international flair. At “VOLT“, regional classics are interpreted anew and the
sophisticated yet sumptuous courses cause the hearts of food connoisseurs to jump for joy. The
menu features Lausitz trout alongside what it calls “Nougat Dove“ and “Unbelievable Cheese
from Germany“. Brick walls, dark wood and muted lighting from round copper lamps give a cosy
touch to the striking industrial setting. A four-course meal is currently around 50 euros, and the
vegetarian menu 40 euros. One may also order à la carte.
Buch-Tipp:
Nachahmen empfohlen
Brachen geeignet!
// Book tip: Imitation recommended An overseas shipping container has
been converted to a kitchen where home-grown foods are now consumed
collectively on a long table amid crates and sacks of vegetables
and herbs. In Berlin's Prinzessinnengarten (see page 46) Kreuzberg
locals transformed urban wasteland into a flowering oasis. Historian
Marco Clausen and film maker Robert Shaw conceived the idea, which
has since spawned numerous me-too projects both in Germany and
abroad. The book “Prinzessinnengärten. Anders gärtnern in der Stadt“
(“Princess Gardens. Alternative gardening in the city“) describes the
project and provides numerous practical examples and useful tips on
planting and gardening in the “mobile urban landscape“. Also suitable
for smaller wastelands!
3 Fragen
// 3 Questions
an den Berliner Kabarettisten, Autoren und
Geschichtenerzähler Horst Evers, der sich auf
der ITB Berlin im Rahmen des Kirchenforums
„Reif fürs Paradies“ auch mit Tourismus
beschäftigte.
1
2
3
Herr Evers, Diepholz, Nordenham, Oldenburg
aussehen?
Falls
Welche Sprachen würden Sie in Ihrem Leben
gern noch lernen und warum?
Alle.
bekanntesten Kabarettis-
ten Berlins und arbeitete
unter anderem schon als
Tresenkraft, Meinungsforscher
und Taxifahrer.
Ansonsten mag er Bahn-
höfe, denn „dort ist immer
was in Bewegung“.
// Horst Evers is one of
Berlin’s most well-known
cabaret artists. He has
worked as a bartender,
opinion pollster, and
taxi driver. He also has
a fondness for train
stations – a location
he describes as being
“always in motion”.
// 3 Questions to Berlin cabaret artist, author and storyteller Horst
Evers, who explored the theme of tourism at this year’s ITB Berlin
within the framework of a church forum called “Ripe for Paradise”.
Mr Evers, Diepholz, Nordenham, Oldenburg – you certainly get around!
Where is paradise for you? In heaven or on earth?
Neither. Paradise can truly be everywhere. Many people see paradise as an idyll
of complete relaxation, peace and satisfaction. But I would argue that paradise
can also be a moment of action. An entirely fulfilling moment in which who you
are and what you’re doing are one and the same thing. Also, I think paradise is
much less something we can seek and find, and much more something we must
come to understand.
If you were asked to develop a travel app for smartphones, what
would it look like?
It depends. If I wanted to be successful and make lots of money, I would create
an audio city guide. Users would be escorted to city landmarks, for example, by
the voices of Scarlett Johansson, George Clooney or Iris Berben. These voices
would explain everything in a charming, witty and intelligent manner. The title
would be something like “Discover Regensburg with George Clooney”. Smartphone
apps like these will no doubt be available very soon. In fact, just in case
any developers are reading, I would be more than willing to explain this and
other concepts further – for a small fee, of course.
Which languages would you like to learn in your life and why?
All of them. Why? Because I can’t imagine being able to truly understand a
country and its people without being able to understand the language they
speak. If you can, spend some time in a room full of people talking your own
language; and then go into the same room, this time full of people suddenly
speaking a different language. You’ll figure out pretty quickly that these are
two very different rooms.
– the art of connecting
