Mechanical Engineering
Why study Aerospace, Automotive or
Mechanical Engineering at Bath?
Our MEng programmes include Aerospace Engineering, Automotive Engineering,
Mechanical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering with Advanced Design and Innovation,
and Mechanical Engineering with Manufacturing and Management.
All programmes in the Department are MEng degrees. The first two years involve a
common core of basic engineering subjects, providing a broad base of engineering,
personal and communication skills giving students flexibility to change their original
choice of MEng option. In Years 3 and 4 students specialise in their chosen degree,
taking a combination of core and optional units, together with a group business and
design project and an individual research project.
n A large department with student/staff ratio of approximately 4:1 in Year 1 provides a
wide range of options within the fields of engineering and management
n State-of-the-art laboratory and computing facilities
n Research led academic staff
n Excellent links with industry ensure teaching and undergraduate project activities are
industrially relevant
n Over 50% of students enhance their experience and career prospects by undertaking
an industrial placement
Placements
Over 50% of our students elect to spend a period in industry during their degrees. This
may be either a full year of paid employment following the second year of study (The
‘five-year sandwich’) or a six-month period during Year 3. There is a member of staff
responsible for industrial liaison and, at present, there are plenty of placements available
in a wide range of companies including Shell, Ford, Motorola, British Airways, Hewlett
Packard, Renault, Bosch, ABB-Alstom, Rolls Royce GmbH, Airbus and Siemens.
