Willkommen in der Einzigartigke<strong>it</strong>
Perhaps <strong>it</strong>’s your first time in Düsseldorf; in our c<strong>it</strong>y,
which may seem small to you – only 15 minutes by car
from the airport. Our c<strong>it</strong>y lies on the 51st northern lat<strong>it</strong>ude.
That is the same level as London and Vancouver, and not
much more south than Moscow. The average temperature
in summer is under 25° Celsius. That, of course, doesn’t
mean that <strong>it</strong> never gets really hot here. People in Düsseldorf
already perceive anything over 30° as “really hot”. And
we know that these temperatures don’t last: nothing is as
certain here as the quick weather changes.
W<strong>it</strong>h the help of Germany’s Lounge Magazine, we
want to show you what makes Düsseldorf, Cologne and
the other commun<strong>it</strong>ies in the c<strong>it</strong>y and forest landscape
(photograph 1) of North Rhine-Westphalia “tick”. And what
makes the people and this region so unique that vis<strong>it</strong>ors
come repeately; for open-air shopping (photograph 2),
for health and beauty care or to strengthen their business
contacts; like our “t<strong>it</strong>le hero”, Daniel Helm (photograph 3).
The 33 year-old master carpenter from the vicin<strong>it</strong>y of Cologne
and Bonn, realised his approach regarding furn<strong>it</strong>ure,
interior and business design firstly in London and Shanghai.
Now he is heading for Dubai and the Emirates. We will
follow up on that and much more: in the next ed<strong>it</strong>ions of
Germany’s Lounge Magazine. Now enjoy the anniversary

Sie kommen vielleicht zum ersten Mal nach Düsseldorf;
in jene – für Sie möglicherweise klein wirkende – Großstadt,
in der Sie vom Flughafen bis in die C<strong>it</strong>y höchstens
15 Minuten m<strong>it</strong> dem Auto benötigen. Diese Stadt liegt auf
dem 51. Nördlichen Bre<strong>it</strong>engrad. Das ist die gleiche Höhe
wie London oder Vancouver und es ist nicht viel südlicher
als Moskau. Die Temperatur liegt im Sommer durchschn<strong>it</strong>tlich
unter 25° Celsius. Das heißt freilich nicht, dass es nicht
auch mal richtig heiß werden kann. Als „richtig heiß“ empfindet
„der Düsseldorfer“ schon Temperaturen von mehr
als 30°. Und er weiß: Lange halten diese Temperaturen
nicht an: Wenig ist hier sicherer als die Tatsache, dass sich
das Wetter schnell ändert.
M<strong>it</strong> Germany’s Lounge Magazine wollen wir Ihnen
näher bringen, wie Düsseldorf, Köln und die anderen
Gemeinden in der Stadt- und Waldlandschaft Nordrhein-
Westfalens (Foto 1) „ticken“. Und was diese Menschen und
diese Region so einzigartig macht, dass ganz viele Besucher
schon zum wiederholten Mal kommen; zum Open Air
Shopping (Foto 2), zur Pflege von Gesundhe<strong>it</strong> und Schönhe<strong>it</strong>
oder zur Vertiefung geschäftlicher Kontakte, wie sie
beispielsweise unser „T<strong>it</strong>elheld“ Daniel Helm (Foto 3) geknüpft
hat. Der 33jährige Schreinermeister aus der Nähe
von Köln und Bonn hat seine Vorstellung von Möbel-,
Wohn- und Geschäftsdesign erst in London und Shanghai
verwirklicht. Jetzt ist er auf dem Sprung nach Dubai und
in die Emirate. Wir werden das
verfolgen und vieles mehr: in

Königsallee: A Mall under Open Sky
Almost all top brands presented next to each other w<strong>it</strong>hin a few hundred metres.
Fast alle Topmarken präsentieren sich auf wenigen Hundert Metern nebeneinander.
Naturally <strong>it</strong> rains from time to time onto Düsseldorf’s
most famous street. Some vis<strong>it</strong>ors enjoy the moist
coolness under their umbrellas. Others, experiencing 15 to
20 days of rain per month in Düsseldorf every year, try to
appease: only very seldomly did <strong>it</strong> rain all day. Usually the
rain only consists of short or long showers. In the whole
past year a total of 71 cm of rain fell onto each square centimetre
of the Königsallee; which means only 6 centimetres
per month or rather 2 millimetres per day.
The state cap<strong>it</strong>al of North Rhine Westphalia is hence
counted amongst the less moist areas of Germany. Berlin,
the national cap<strong>it</strong>al, appears almost dusty w<strong>it</strong>h <strong>it</strong>s 61 centimetres
of rainfall per square centimetre. Hamburg and
Munich are slightly above Düsseldorf’s levels, w<strong>it</strong>h 72 and
73 centimetres respectively. In Cologne, the cap<strong>it</strong>al c<strong>it</strong>y of
churches, 35 kilometres south of Düsseldorf, the umbrella
is required more often, for a total of 75 centimetres of rain
per year. This, however, pales in comparison to the “Kahler
Asten”, the highest hill in NRW: more than 1 metre of E

Straße herunter. Mancher Besucher genießt die
feuchte Kühle unter einem Regenschirm. Andere, die Jahr
aus Jahr ein 15 bis 20 Regentage im Monat in Düsseldorf
erleben, beruhigen: Nur selten regnete es dann den ganzen
Tag! In der Regel sind es nur mehr oder weniger kurze
oder lange Schauer. Im gesamten vergangenen Jahr sind
in der Summe 71 Zentimeter Regen auf jeden Quadratzentimeter
Königsallee gefallen; also nur 6 Zentimeter im
Monat oder nur 2 Millimeter pro Tag.
Dam<strong>it</strong> zählt Düsseldorf als Landeshauptstadt von Nordrhein-Westfalen
(NRW) zu den weniger feuchten Gebieten
in Deutschland. Berlin, die Bundeshauptstadt, wirkt m<strong>it</strong> 61
Zentimetern Regensäule fast schon staubig. Hamburg und
München liegen m<strong>it</strong> 72 und 73 Zentimetern leicht über
Düsseldorfer Niveau. In Köln, der Kirchenhauptstadt 35 Kilometer
südlich von Düsseldorf, braucht man häufiger den
Regenschirm; für insgesamt 75 Zentimeter Regen im Jahr.
Das ist freilich nichts gegenüber dem Kahlen Asten, E

The masses of water from the mountains surrounding
the village w<strong>it</strong>h the f<strong>it</strong>ting name of Winterberg,
fills the rivers and reservoirs in all directions; particularly
the Ruhr. The river Ruhr lends <strong>it</strong>s name to the Ruhr-area,
the largest urban and industrial landscape in Europe. It
flows into the Rhine 35 kilometres north of Düsseldorf
near Duisburg. The Rhine, a legendary German river, is
widely celebrated in verse and music. It originates in Sw<strong>it</strong>zerland
and flows through the Republic from the South to
the North. It passes the world cultural her<strong>it</strong>age area w<strong>it</strong>h
<strong>it</strong>s castles between Mainz and Koblenz, before flowing
through Cologne, w<strong>it</strong>h <strong>it</strong>s
world cultural her<strong>it</strong>age cathedral.
It then carries on through
Düsseldorf, w<strong>it</strong>h <strong>it</strong>s cosmopol<strong>it</strong>an
flair, and Duisburg w<strong>it</strong>h
<strong>it</strong>s world-class steelworks,
before veering west into the
Netherlands and finally joining the salty waters of the
Baltic Sea near Rotterdam.
In the event of rain on the Königsallee the shopping
malls to the right and left, such as the “Kö-Gallery”,
“Sevens”, the “Schadow-Arkaden”, Leysieffer’s Café or
Heinemann’s confectionary in the KöCenter, provide
shelter. However, the chance of experiencing the world
brands of haute couture, jewellery and watches concentrated
in an 800 metre area, w<strong>it</strong>hout getting your feet
wet and in warm, bright daylight in the open air, are very
high. “Vis<strong>it</strong>ors, who mainly know this kind of range from
air-cond<strong>it</strong>ioned malls, love this,” says an author<strong>it</strong>y on the
subject and points out a singular<strong>it</strong>y of this area: The „Kö“,
as the people from Düsseldorf lovingly call their grand
boulevard, features shops found only here: the watch shop
“Blome” e.g. or “Franzen’s” porcelain are two of these family
enterprises.
“Eickhoff’s” fashion, at Kö30 is possibly the most prominent
address in the category of uniqueness. On Eickhoff’s
1,000 square metres floor space, vis<strong>it</strong>ors are able to find
everything, when elsewhere they would, in extreme cases,
have to shop their way through 120 brand locations. “We
are very proud of our family businesses on the “Kö” and
in many other places of this fashion metropolis, where
graduates of the fashion school materialize their skills,” one
says at Düsseldorf’s c<strong>it</strong>y hall: “We have to make an effort to
cultivate this uniqueness, in order to maintain <strong>it</strong>.” K
E E dem höchsten Berg in NRW: Dort wird regelmäßig
mehr als 1 Meter Regen im Jahr gemessen. Im Winter muss
für die Messungen Schnee geschmolzen werden. Das
viele Wasser aus dem Gebirge rund um den Ort m<strong>it</strong> dem
beziehungsreichen Namen Winterberg füllt Flüsse und
Talsperren in allen Himmelsrichtungen, im Wesentlichen
aber die Ruhr. Sie gibt dem Ruhr-Gebiet den Namen, der
größten Stadt- und Industrielandschaft in Europa, ehe sie
35 Kilometer nördlich von Düsseldorf bei Duisburg in den
Rhein mündet; in den Sagen umsungenen Fluss der Deutschen,
der aus der Schweiz kommend die Republik von
Süd nach Nord durchströmt; der durch das Weltkulturerbe
m<strong>it</strong> seinen vielen Burgen zwischen Mainz und Koblenz
fließt, ehe er durch Köln m<strong>it</strong>
seinem Weltkultur-Dom, durch
Düsseldorf m<strong>it</strong> seinem Weltstadt-Flair
und durch Duisburg
m<strong>it</strong> seinem Welt-Stahlwerk
fließt, bevor er nach Westen in
die Niederlande abbiegt, um
sich bei Rotterdam m<strong>it</strong> dem Salzwasser der Nordsee zu
vereinen.
Sobald es also auf der Königsallee mal regnen sollte,
bieten die Einkaufspassagen rechts und links Unterschlupf;
die Kö-Galerie, das Sevens oder die Schadow-Arkaden
oder z.B. Leysieffers Café oder Heinemanns Kond<strong>it</strong>orei im
KöCenter. Die Chance, die Weltmarken der Haute Couture,
der Juweliere und Uhren konzentriert auf 800 Metern trockenen
Fußes bei Tageslicht unter freiem Himmel und bei
angenehmen Temperaturen erleben zu können, ist jedenfalls
sehr hoch. „Das lieben die Gäste, die dieses Angebot
ansonsten vor allem aus den klimatisierten Malls kennen“,
sagt eine Kennerein und weist noch auf ein Spezifikum
hin: Die Kö, wie die Düsseldorfer ihre Prachtstraße liebevoll
nennen, kennt Geschäfte, die es nur hier gibt: Uhren Blome
z.B. oder Franzen’s Porzellan sind zwei dieser Familienunternehmen.
Eickhoff’s Mode, Kö30 ist wohl die berühmteste
Adresse in dieser Kategorie der Einzigartigke<strong>it</strong>. Auf
1.000 Quadratmetern findet die Besucherin bei der Familie
Eickhoff alles, wofür sie sonst durch 120 Markenadressen
shoppen müsste. „Wir sind sehr stolz auf unsere Familienadressen
an der Kö und an vielen
anderen Stellen der Modestadt,
wo sich AbsolventInnen der
Modeschule verwirklichen“, hört
man im Düsseldorfer Rathaus:
„Wir müssen uns bemühen, diese
Einzigartigke<strong>it</strong> zu pflegen, um sie
zu erhalten.“

Nowhere else on the big shopping boulevards are
international fashion brands lined up as closely as on
the Königsallee in Düsseldorf; from Armani to Bogner, Boss
to Chanel; from Escada to Hermès, Luis Vu<strong>it</strong>ton to Zenga –
practically all brands are represented on the few hundred
metres, which form Kö No.1 to 92; and further on to the
China Centre w<strong>it</strong>h the original China Restaurant in No. 106.
We cannot name all labels here, as there are always new
add<strong>it</strong>ions; such as Abercrombie & F<strong>it</strong>ch recently. The best
way to get an overview is to do a fashion walk down the
Kö yourself.
Of course, shoes are an absolute must to complement
the fashion range. Navyboots are available at the Kö-
Center (No. 30) right next to Prange, the king of elegant
shoes, who is present more than once on the Kö. If you are
looking for Jimmy Choo’s, you need to go to Eickhoff’s, the
unique fashion shop. LouBoutain, however, is not available
yet on the Kö. You would have to go down Steinstraße
over the Kö-Graben, past the two bank blocks and up to
Benrather Str. 15. This is the home of the aspiring Apropos
The Concept Store. This is where you will find LouBoutain
shoes lined up on the shelves. Experts presume that in a
year from now, these elegant shoes will be available at
the new Kö-Bogen, which is still under construction at the
moment.
Of course, when <strong>it</strong> comes to gold, watches, jewellery
and the other beautiful things in life, Bucherer, Bulgari
und Cartier are present on the Kö too, just like Swarovski,
Tiffany and furs by Slupinki. The special charm of the
boulevard, however, is provided by Blome Uhren, Franzen,
Hestermann and Heilmann and the other addresses which
are unique to Düsseldorf; for e.g. also on Blumenstraße.
Here the jewellers are lined up side by side: Fine Art
Gawron, Kube and Schubart are set to
make your heart race. Blumenstraße
is only a few steps
away from the Kö. Just in
case <strong>it</strong> rains, you can
find shelter at the
Schadow-Arkaden

Die internationalen Modemarken liegen nirgendwo auf
den großen Shopping-Boulevards so dicht beieinander
wie auf der Königsallee in Düsseldorf: Von Armani
über Bogner, Boss und Chanel, von Escada über Hermès,
Luis Vu<strong>it</strong>ton bis Zenga sind praktisch alle Labels auf den
wenigen hundert Metern vertreten, die von der Kö Nr. 2
bis zur Nr. 92 führen und noch darüber hinaus bis zum
China-Zentrum m<strong>it</strong> dem Original China-Restaurant in Nr.
106. Alle Labels können hier gar nicht aufgeführt werden.
Ständig kommen neue Adressen dazu, wie zuletzt Abercrombie
& F<strong>it</strong>ch. Am besten gehen Sie den Walk of Fashion
selbst ab.
Wo die feinste Mode zu Hause ist, da dürfen Schuhe
nicht fehlen. Navyboots finden Sie im Kö-Center (Nr. 30),
gleich neben Prange, dem feinen Schuh-König, der gleich
mehrfach auf der Kö präsent ist. Wer freilich Jimmy Choo‘s
sucht, muss noch mal in Eickhoff’s einzigartiges Modelgeschäft
rein. Da gibt es Jimmy-Choo-Schuhe. LouBoutain
sind bislang allerdings noch gar nicht auf der Kö zu
bekommen: Dafür muss man an der Steinstraße über den
Kö-Graben, an den beiden Banken-Blocks vorbei bis zur
Benrather Str. 15. Da liegt der amib<strong>it</strong>ionierte Apropos
The Concept Store. Und dort stehen LouBoutain-Schuhe
im Regal. Experten vermuten, dass in gut einem Jahr im
derze<strong>it</strong> noch im Bau befindlichen Kö-Bogen auch diese
besonders feinen Schuhe zu finden sein werden.
In Sachen Gold, Uhren und Juwelen und den anderen
schönen Dingen des Lebens sind Bucherer, Bulgari
und Cartier – natürlich – auf der Kö dabei, genauso wie
Swarovski und Tiffany oder die Pelze von Slupinki. Den besonderen
Charme der Allee machen jedoch Blome-Uhren,
Franzen, Hestermann und Heilmann aus und die anderen
Adressen, die es nur in Düsseldorf gibt; z.B. auch in der
Blumenstraße, wo die Juweliere dicht an dicht präsentieren:
Fine Art Gawron, Kube oder Schubart lassen hier die
Herzen höher schlagen. Und es sind nur wenige Schr<strong>it</strong>te
von der Kö bis zur Blumenstraße. Sollte es dann doch mal
regnen, bieten die Schadow-Arkaden Schutz. Das ist dann
eine Mall m<strong>it</strong> Dach. K

Olympia an Rhein und Ruhr
The Olympic Games in London are set to be the top
sports event in 2012. If <strong>it</strong> had been up to the former
Lord Mayor of Düsseldorf, Joachim Erwin and his followers,
the games would have taken place in Düsseldorf and the
whole of the Rhine-Ruhr area. That wasn’t meant to be.
Düsseldorf already failed in the German pre-qualification
due to Leipzig, although <strong>it</strong> was clear at this point in 2003,
that Leipzig and the other locations in Eastern Germany
would not be in the pos<strong>it</strong>ion to accommodate millions of
athletes and vis<strong>it</strong>ors from all over the world. Now we can
fly from Düsseldorf International to London in the morning
and can still be back easily for a party in the old town
or at the Rhine Promenade.
The Olympic turndown has a disadvantage for Düsseldorf:
the c<strong>it</strong>y is in the middle of massive construction
works. This phase would defin<strong>it</strong>ely have been over, if the
Olympic rings would currently be hanging over the Königsallee
and not over Oxford Street. Of course, this disadvantage
also has a pos<strong>it</strong>ive aspect: the result of current construction
will be far more spectacular than what would have
been planned for the Olympics. And every day, on which
the urban lifestyle is being hampered by construction fences
and cranes, the wa<strong>it</strong>ing period is getting shorter until
final completion. The Königsallee will then be crowned
by the Kö-Bogen. Here the king and queen don’t wear a
crown; the c<strong>it</strong>izen who lives and revels here is king. K

unsere spiele so bunt wie die welt
Die Olympischen Spiele in London sind 2012 das
sportliche Top-Ereignis. Eigentlich hatten diese Spiele
in Düsseldorf und im gesamten Rhein-Ruhrgebiet stattfinden
sollen, wenn es nur nach dem damaligen Düsseldorfer
Oberbürgermeister Joachim Erwin und seinen Anhängern
gegangen wäre. Ging es aber nicht. Düsseldorf sche<strong>it</strong>erte
schon in der deutschen Vorqualifikation an Leipzig, obwohl
schon bei diesem Entscheid im Jahr 2003 feststand,
dass Leipzig und die anderen Orte in den ostdeutschen
Bundesländern gar nicht in der Lage sein würden, Millionen
Sportler und Besucher aus aller Welt unterzubringen.
Jetzt fliegt man morgens von Düsseldorf-International
rüber nach London und kann locker abends zurück sein
zur Party in der Altstadt oder an der Rhein-Promenade.
Einen Nachteil hat die Olympia-Absage für Düsseldorf:
Die Stadt befindet sich aktuell noch in einer massiven
Umbauphase. Diese Phase hätte sie bere<strong>it</strong>s hinter sich,
wenn die Olympischen Ringe aktuell über der Königsallee
hingen und nicht über der Oxford-Street. Der Nachteil hat
freilich auch einen Vorteil: Das Ergebnis des derze<strong>it</strong>igen
Umbaus wird we<strong>it</strong> spektakulärer sein als alles, was seinerze<strong>it</strong>
für Olympia geplant war. Und m<strong>it</strong> jedem Tag, den derze<strong>it</strong>
noch Bauzäune und Baukräne das urbane Lebensgefühl
verstellen, nimmt die Warteze<strong>it</strong> ab, bis alles fertig ist.
Die Königsallee wird dann vom Kö-Bogen gekrönt. König
oder Königin tragen keine Krone: König ist der Bürger, der
hier lebt oder erlebt. K

Not artificially constructed, but embraced by the Rhine over centuries:
the distinguished mock island of Oberkassel. But w<strong>it</strong>hout palms.
Nicht künstlich angelegt sondern in Jahrtausenden vom Rhein
umschlungen: die feine Schein-Insel Oberkassel. Aber ohne Palmen.
It looks like an island – Oberkassel, Düsseldorf’s western
c<strong>it</strong>y district, is surrounded by the fresh water of the
Rhine, which is becoming a breeding ground once again
for splendid fish. The island of Oberkassel is not really an
island as such. It just looks like an island, but in truth <strong>it</strong> is
mainland – in as far as one can define this Lower Rhine
alluvial land, which was washed in by the Rhine and on
which Oberkassel was built, as mainland. Further to the
west, Oberkassel goes Dutch – into the neighbouring
country of Holland. The Dutch are masters, especially now
in modern times, in making mainland from marine alluvial
land: land reclamation <strong>it</strong> is called. Of course, <strong>it</strong> was the
Dutch who built the palm island of Jumeirah in the Persian
Gulf – and who also conducted land reclamation here.
There are plans from past centuries, according to which
Oberkassel was to be made into an island. The plan was
to dig a canal. This canal was to straighten the flow of the
Rhine and to save the ships from having to bypass Oberkassel
and the massive “Rhein-Knie” bend. The Rhein- E
Er sieht aus wie eine Insel; Oberkassel; der westliche
Stadtteil von Düsseldorf wird vom Süßwasser des

verläuft sich Oberkassel ins Niederländische, sprich in den
Nachbarstaat Niederlande. Die Niederländer verstehen es
gerade in der Neuze<strong>it</strong> meisterhaft, aus Meeres-Schwemmland
Festland zu machen: Landgewinnung nennt man das.
Und es waren – natürlich – niederländische Firmen, die die
Palmeninsel Jumeirah in den Persischen Golf hineingebaut
– und auch dort Landgewinnung betrieben haben.
Aus dem vergangenen Jahrhundert gibt es Pläne, aus
Oberkassel tatsächlich eine Insel zu machen. Die Pläne
sahen vor, einen Kanal auszugraben. Er sollte den Lauf des
Rheins begradigen und den Schiffen die Umfahrung von
Oberkassel und den gewaltigen Bogen ersparen, den sie
heute unter der beziehungsreich „Knie-Brücke“ genannten

E E Knie in Düsseldorf is one of the sharpest bends in
the Rhine on <strong>it</strong>s more than 1,200 kilometre path from the
Swiss Alps to the Dutch North Sea. The bend is defin<strong>it</strong>ely
sharper than at the legendary Loreley rocks in the Middle
Rhine region. Recently, a modern tanker almost sank there.
The amb<strong>it</strong>ious canal plans were never realised. They
were not drawn up by the Dutch. Today, the mock island of
Oberkassel is the most prominent district in Düsseldorf. It
may not provide the right climate for palms and a E

Schein-Insel Oberkassel ist heute der prominenteste Stadtteil
von Düsseldorf. Zwar reicht es – anders als auf anderen
Inseln – wettermäßig nicht für Palmen und ein spektakuläres
Freibad. Eine Bahn führt über die Oberkasseler Brücke
m<strong>it</strong>ten hinein in den Prominenten-Stadtteil m<strong>it</strong> Insel-Flair
und ausgeprägter Restaurant-Szene. So dicht ist der Stadtteil
schon zusammengewachsen, dass nur noch vereinzelt
gebaut oder umgebaut werden kann. Die Preise steigen
entsprechend. Sie sind jedoch noch ein gutes Stück von
den inselspezifischen Verhältnissen in London entfernt.

E E spectacular open-air swimming pool like other islands,
but a train leads over the Oberkassel bridge directly

already so highly developed, that there is l<strong>it</strong>tle space for
new construction or upgrading. The prices are rising accordingly,
but are still far removed from the “island standards”

The various Düsseldorf island train lines don’t end at
the non-existent end of the mock island. They carry on in a
westerly direction towards Neuss and Krefeld. In these areas,
there is an increase in Dutch influence in the building
style. Because the “Kanal du Oberkassel” wasn’t built and
the Rhine still has to do an almost royal “curtsy” in front of
the Düsseldorf old town, there is the unique Rhine Promenade.
This forms a meeting point for vis<strong>it</strong>ors from all over
the world. It is seldom too cold or too wet to take a stroll
along here and to enjoy e.g. the view of the mock island of

Real estate is a hot topic currently in Germany and
especially in Düsseldorf. As a result of the debt crisis
in Greece, Spain and Portugal, as well as on the islands
of Ireland and Cyprus, there is a fear of inflation. Fears
have been raised that the only way to reduce the onerous
debts, is through currency devaluation. The German saver
and tax payer bears massive liabil<strong>it</strong>y for the national debt
of the above-named countries. Desp<strong>it</strong>e the fact that Germany
and <strong>it</strong>s tax payers are also debt-ridden.
Real estate is a material asset. Its value is not in danger
of shrinking as a result of general price increases. To the
contrary: through the extensive purchases by savers and
investors, the real estate prices are already increasing
before inflation has actually been observed. The trend is
being boosted by funds which are being sent by investors
from the indebted countries to Germany; for example
from Greece.
The trend of rising real estate prices is being strengthened
by the lack of land reserves, which can be developed–
especially in Düsseldorf. Düsseldorf is a growing c<strong>it</strong>y E

The landscape around the Rhine and the Ruhr, w<strong>it</strong>h
the c<strong>it</strong>ies of Düsseldorf and Cologne at their centre, is
still considered an urban and industrial landscape. This is
really true for the area between Dortmund in the East and
Duisburg in the West of the region. This area has about as
many residents as London, but <strong>it</strong> is only a small part of the
overall nature-dominated North Rhine-Westphalia (NRW).
One quarter of the total surface of NRW consists of forests.
This starts w<strong>it</strong>h the Grafenberger woods in Düsseldorf. The
old beech forest area provides pure relaxation and recuperation,
only a few kilometres from the c<strong>it</strong>y centre. Right in
the heart of this idyllic location, are the horse-racing track
(duesseldorf-galopp.de) and the 18-hole Grafenberg Golf
Club (golf-duesseldorf.de).
Recreation and well-being play a big economic role
in NRW nowadays. A growing number of guests vis<strong>it</strong> the
green lungs of the federal state; the extensive, forested E

Following medical treatments, the main healing
and recuperation process often continues in the very
tranquil l<strong>it</strong>tle villages.
The most recent test of hosp<strong>it</strong>als in Germany, carried
out by Focus magazine, placed five NRW clinics amongst
the best 25 of a total of 2,000 German hosp<strong>it</strong>als: namely,
the univers<strong>it</strong>y clinics of Bonn, Aachen, Cologne, Munster

html). Im Anschluss an medizinische Behandlungen findet
der Heilungs- und Erholungsprozess in den vielfach sehr
beschaulichen Orten eine entspannende Fortsetzung.
Der jüngste Test der Krankenhäuser in Deutschland,
durchgeführt von der Ze<strong>it</strong>schrift Focus, hat fünf NRW-Häuser
unter den besten 25 von insgesamt 2.000 deutschen
Krankenhäusern platziert: Es sind jeweils die Univers<strong>it</strong>ätskliniken
von Bonn, Aachen, Köln, Münster und Düsseldorf
(wissenschaft.nrw.de/hochschulen_und_forschung/
hochschulmedizin). Das ist ein gutes Ergebnis für das Gesundhe<strong>it</strong>sland
NRW. Viele Kliniken, gerade in Düsseldorf,
Köln und im Ruhrgebiet sind inzwischen auch sprachlich
auf Patienten aus dem M<strong>it</strong>tleren Osten eingestellt. Das gilt
darüber hinaus auch für Privatkliniken, die z.B. rings um
die Königsallee angesiedelt sind und eng m<strong>it</strong> den Hotels
der Landeshauptstadt zusammenarbe<strong>it</strong>en.

A German saying goes. In former times crafts journeymen
travelled the countryside for years after their
apprenticeship, in order to gain experience and finally
become masters of their trade. Nowadays German master
craftsmen travel all over the world to practice their trade;
for example carpenter Daniel Helm from Troisdorf, which
is s<strong>it</strong>uated between Cologne and Bonn. The 33 year-old
recently was in Rome to present his approach on design
and functional<strong>it</strong>y – the new German craftsmanship – to a
prospective customer from the Middle East
The vis<strong>it</strong>or from Dubai had flown in on Emirates Airlines,
to furnish his new apartments in the holy c<strong>it</strong>y. “We are
looking forward to this order and everything else that
might come afterwards, when the prospective customer
is back in the Emirates,” says master carpenter Helm, after
landing at the Cologne-Bonn airport. His shop is located in
the industrial park of Troisdorf, called “CampSpich”, which
has sprung up on former barracks grounds, fa<strong>it</strong>hful to the
maxim “swords into ploughshares!”
Helm‘s family enterprise “Ihr Schreinermeister.com” is
typical for the German economy. Mother Sandra is part of
the team w<strong>it</strong>h eight journeymen. The two daughters enjoy
living in the perfectly furnished private home in E

Craftmanship w<strong>it</strong>h World Class Design
Handwerkskunst schafft Weltklasse-Design
Handwerk hat goldenen Boden“, besagt ein uraltes
deutsches Sprichwort. Früher zogen Handwerksgesellen
nach ihrer Lehrze<strong>it</strong> Jahre lang über Land, um
Erfahrungen zu sammeln und schließlich zu Meistern zu
werden. Heute ziehen deutsche Handwerksmeister in alle
Welt, um ihre Kunst zu praktizieren; so wie beispielsweise
Schreinermeister Daniel Helm aus Troisdorf; zwischen Köln
und Bonn gelegen. Der 33jährige war jüngst in Rom, um
einem Interessenten aus Middle East seine Auffassung von
Design und Funktional<strong>it</strong>ät vorzustellen: die neue deutsche
Handwerkskunst.
Der Besucher aus Dubai war m<strong>it</strong> Emirates eingeflogen,
um seine neuen Wohnungen in der heiligen Stadt einrichten
zu lassen. „Wir freuen uns auf den Auftrag und auf
das, was danach vielleicht noch kommen wird, wenn der
Interessent zurück in den Emiraten ist“, sagt Meister Helm,
nachdem er wieder in Köln-Bonn gelandet ist. Seine Werkstadt
liegt im Troisdorfer Gewerbegebiet „CampSpich“,
das auf einem früheren Kasernengelände entstanden ist;
getreu der Maxime: „Macht Schwerter zu Pflugscharen!“
Helms Familienfirma „IhrSchreinermeister.com“ ist typisch
für die deutsche Wirtschaft. Frau Sandra ist m<strong>it</strong> dabei
und acht Gesellen. Die beiden Töchter genießen es, im
perfekt ausgestatteten Privathaus in Köln-Wahn zu leben;
ganz in der Nähe des Flughafens. „Unser Haus ist praktisch
unsere Ausstellung“, bestätigt Sandra Helm: „Da sieht man,
dass wir nicht nur fürs Schaufenster bauen sondern fürs
Leben und Genießen.“ Die Chefin hat früher als Fremdsprachensekretärin
gearbe<strong>it</strong>et. Den internationalen Kontakten
und Ansprüchen der Familienfirma kommt das heute stark
entgegen. E
E E Köln-Wahn, very close to the airport. “Our house is
practically our exhib<strong>it</strong>ion“, confirms mother Sandra Helm.
“Here you can see that we build our furn<strong>it</strong>ure for real life
and enjoyment, not only for the shop window.” The boss
used to work as a foreign language secretary. This proves
very helpful w<strong>it</strong>h the international contacts and requirements
the family business faces today.
Out in the shop in CampSpich there are the most modern
computers and machines for design and presentation
and for the preparation of the manual workmanship on
s<strong>it</strong>e. “On s<strong>it</strong>e we often cooperate w<strong>it</strong>h other craftsmen – especially
from other branches,” relates the master carpenter,
and goes on about how he integrates k<strong>it</strong>chen equipment,
lighting and entertainment electronics. “We used to have
more journeymen, but <strong>it</strong> also used to take more effort to
fulfil our qual<strong>it</strong>y expectations. This works much better now
w<strong>it</strong>h fewer people and the cooperation w<strong>it</strong>h other master
craftsmen and suppliers.” In Shanghai, Helm did carpentry
for the world exhib<strong>it</strong>ion. In Sw<strong>it</strong>zerland, he upgraded the
interior of a mountain mansion. “The biggest difficulty
here was working w<strong>it</strong>h the customs office, even though
we used Swiss wood,” reminisces master Helm.
The extravagant demands “IhrSchreinermeister” realises
for his customers start w<strong>it</strong>h the wood. German smoke oak,
American walnut or Indian apple tree; everything is available
and can be demonstrated realistically on the screen.
On demand, Helm will also produce the FSC certificate for
sustainable growth and re-growth of the tropical wood
that he uses for the customer.
As a journeyman Helm himself also travelled the world.
In London, he practised German craftsmanship for E

– gerade auch aus anderen Fachrichtungen“, erzählt
der Schreinermeister, wie er Küchengeräte, Beleuchtungen
oder Unterhaltungselektronik integriert: „Wir hatten früher
mehr Gesellen, aber auch mehr Aufwand, um unsere besonderen
Qual<strong>it</strong>ätsansprüche zu verwirklichen. Das klappt
jetzt m<strong>it</strong> weniger Leuten und mehr Kooperationen m<strong>it</strong>
anderen Meistern und Lieferanten viel besser.“ In Shanghai
hat Helm für die Weltausstellung geschreinert. Oder z.B.
in der Schweiz eine Bergvilla ausgebaut. „Das schwierigste
war da die Abwicklung m<strong>it</strong> dem Zoll. Dabei haben wir
Schweizer Holz verarbe<strong>it</strong>et“, erinnert sich Meister Helm.
M<strong>it</strong> dem Holz beginnen die besonderen Ansprüche,
die „IhrSchreinermeister“ für seine Kunden verwirklicht.
Deutsche Räuchereiche, amerikanischer Nussbaum oder
indischer Apfel; alles ist verfügbar und real<strong>it</strong>ätsnah auf
dem Bildschirm vorführbar. Auf Wunsch liefert Helm
auch das FSC-Zertifikat für den nachhaltigen Aufwuchs
und Nachwuchs des Tropenholzes, das er beim Kunden
verwendet.
Als Geselle ist Helm selbst durch die Welt gezogen. Vor
allem in London hat er Jahre lang deutsche Handwerkskunst
praktiziert. Und hat sich schließlich selbstständig E

“My parents wanted me to graduate from high school w<strong>it</strong>h
the Ab<strong>it</strong>ur (highest German high school certificate), but I
wanted to do something practical,” relates the master carpenter.
The trade associations and pol<strong>it</strong>ics support the globalisation
of the trad<strong>it</strong>ionally very local German trade. The
national trade development office of the trade of North
Rhine Westphalia (LGH) (zih-nrw.de) is responsible for this
support in NRW; as is the foreign trade portal North Rhine

by the NRW prime minister Hannelore Kraft, who has
just been re-elected for another five years, but also by the

Germany is holiday country: 16 statutory holidays are
spread throughout the year between weekends. The
list starts on 6 January w<strong>it</strong>h Epiphany, the holiday of the
“three holy kings”. According to the bible, they came to
the cradle in Bethlehem’s stable. The list always ends w<strong>it</strong>h
Boxing day on 26 December. In between the religious
holidays there is the labour union’s “labour day” on 1 May
and the “Tag der deutschen Einhe<strong>it</strong>” (day of German un<strong>it</strong>y)
on 3 October, in remembrance of Germany’s reunification
after a four decade-long separation in 1989.
Desp<strong>it</strong>e being „statutory“, not all holidays are equally
observed in all 16 states. “Mariä Himmelfahrt” (Assump- E
Deutschland ist das Land der Feiertage: 16 gesetzliche

The different regional distribution of statutory holidays
results from the division of the Christian church. Since
Martin Luther started the reformation in 1517 by posting
his proclamations on a church door in the East German
town of W<strong>it</strong>tenberg (southwest of Berlin), there have been
two main Christian denominations, especially in Germany.
As head of the Catholic church, Papst Benedikt XVI from
Bavaria, resides in Rome. Even the reformed Lutheranprotestant
Christians are proud of the first German to be
elected to Peter’s chair in more than 400 years: “We are
pope” as the “Bild”- newspaper ingeniously headlined on
20 April 2005. However, the protestant Germans do not
believe in the holiness of the pope. As a result of Luther’s
reforms they protested against catholic rules, hence the
name protestants.
“Reformation Day” is a holiday mainly in the eastern
federal states; not however in NRW w<strong>it</strong>h the state cap<strong>it</strong>al
Düsseldorf and the unique catholic cathedral in Cologne.
Apart from that, the residents of NRW are at an advantage:
in their region there are about as many catholics as there
are protestants. Almost all religious holidays are observed
in NRW; w<strong>it</strong>h the exception of Reformation Day.
On such holidays an almost unending motorcade regularly
moves from Düsseldorf westward to the Dutch c<strong>it</strong>y
of Roermond. On the recent holiday of Corpus Christi, the
traffic radio reported more than 10 kilometres of congestion
on a stretch of barely 50 kilometres. And this desp<strong>it</strong>e
the fact, that the narrow country road previously leading
across borders has meanwhile been developed into a
broad motorway. There are no more border patrols E

protestierten sie gegen Regeln des Katholizismus.
Se<strong>it</strong>her werden sie auch Protestanten genannt.
Der „Reformationstag“ ist überwiegend in den östlichen
Bundesländern ein arbe<strong>it</strong>sfreier (Feier)-Tag; nicht aber
in NRW m<strong>it</strong> der Landeshauptstadt Düsseldorf und dem
einzigartigen Katholiken-Dom in Köln. Die Bürger in NRW
sind ansonsten begünstigt: In ihrer Region leben etwa
gleichviele Katholiken und Protestanten. Fast alle kirchlichen
Feiertage werden in NRW begangen; m<strong>it</strong> Ausnahme
des Reformationstages.
An solchen Feiertagen bewegt sich regelmäßig eine fast
unendliche Autokolonne von Düsseldorf nach Westen ins
niederländische Roermond. Zuletzt, am Fronleichnamstag,
meldete der Verkehrsfunk mehr als 10 Kilometer Stau auf
einer Strecke von kaum 50 Kilometern. Und dabei hat E

Roermond in the cheese region of Limburg, are more royalistic
than Christian in their orientation. In the Netherlands
(commonly called Holland), as well as in the royal kingdom
of Belgium and most of Germany’s other neighbouring
countries, Corpus Christi is a normal working day, not a
holiday. That is why the outlet-centre in Roermond is open
on this NRW-holiday and experiences a maximum number
of vis<strong>it</strong>ors. And that is why there are massive congestions
on highway A52 from Düsseldorf to Mönchengladbach
and on to Roermond, or also on the highways A4 and A79
from Cologne, via Aachen into the Belgian Maasmechelen
outlet village.
Always on the day before such holidays in Germany,
newspapers in Düsseldorf, Cologne and Aachen are pleased
about extensive advertising pages from the neighboring
countries. And on the day following the holidays,
the Germans often indulge in a voluntarily given, not
legal holiday, called “Brückentag” (“bridging day”). They
happen on a regular basis in the early summer. Since e.g.
the Christian holidays of Ascention and Corpus Christi
regularly fall on a Thursday, economic life takes a break on

What the German factories do not render in services and
productions on these work free days, is being compensated
by the creation of add<strong>it</strong>ional trade revenue at home
and across the borders.
The many German holidays are no disadvantage for the
economy. It is rather an opportun<strong>it</strong>y for the Germans E

ausgebaut. Grenzkontrollen gibt es zwischen Deutschland
und den Niederlanden nicht mehr; genauso wenig
wie zwischen anderen Ländern des in der Euro-Währung
vereinten Europa-Landes.
Die Niederlande m<strong>it</strong> der östlichen Kleinstadt Roermond
in der Käseregion Limburg sind mehr royalistisch als
christlich ausgerichtet. In den Niederlanden (landläufig:
Holland), wie auch im Königreich Belgien und den meisten
anderen Nachbarländern Deutschlands, ist der Fronleichnamstag
ein normaler Arbe<strong>it</strong>stag und kein Feiertag.
Deshalb hat beispielsweise auch das Outlet-Center in Roermond
an diesem NRW-Feiertag geöffnet und maximalen
Hochbetrieb. Deshalb gibt es diesen gewaltigen Stau auf
der Autobahn 52 von Düsseldorf nach Mönchengladbach
und Roermond oder auch auf der A4 und A79 von Köln
über Aachen ins belgische Maasmechelen Outlet-Village.
Jeweils am Tag vor solchen Feiertagen in Deutschland
freuen sich Ze<strong>it</strong>ungen in Düsseldorf, Köln und Aachen
über umfangreiche Werbese<strong>it</strong>en aus den Nachbarländern.
Und am Tag nach diesen Feiertagen gönnen sich die Deutschen
sehr oft einen freiwilligen, nicht gesetzlichen Feiertag:
„Brückentage“ nennen sie diese Urlaubstage. Es gibt
sie regelmäßig im Frühsommer. Weil z.B. die christlichen
Feiertage Himmelfahrt und Fronleichnam regelmäßig auf
Donnerstage fallen, ruht das Wirtschaftsleben in Deutschland
an den folgenden Fre<strong>it</strong>agen wegen Brückentags-
Urlaub. Was an diesen im wahrsten Sinne des Wortes freien
Tagen in stillliegenden Fabriken nicht an Produktionen
und Leistungen erbracht werden kann, das entsteht im E

discovered the lowest wages.
Cost for transport does not (yet) play a (decisive) role
in this. Container ships can still dispose of their waste materials
into the oceans w<strong>it</strong>h impun<strong>it</strong>y. Germany and China
have just recently in<strong>it</strong>iated a heated argument over the
taxation of aviation fuel. K

Die vielen deutschen Feiertage sind kein Nachteil für
die Wirtschaft. Es ist vielmehr die Chance für die Deutschen
mehr auszugeben. Sie würden zu viel sparen, das
wird den Deutschen von anderer Se<strong>it</strong>e oftmals vorgehalten.
Von jeweils 1.000 Euro Einkommen spart der durchschn<strong>it</strong>tliche
Deutsche mehr als 100 Euro auf inzwischen
fast unverzinslichen Sparbüchern sowie in anderen Anlageformen.
Und wenn im Designer Outlet in Roermond, in
Maasmechelen oder an vielen anderen Orten im In- und
Ausland Marken-Textilien und andere Dinge verkauft werden,
dann sind das zum Teil auch deutsche Marken und
Stücke. Sie werden zwar in Deutschland gestaltet und entworfen.
Herstellen lassen die allermeisten deutschen und
nicht-deutschen Marken jedoch irgendwo in Rumänien,
in China oder Vietnam oder wo immer die Karawane der
Produzenten gerade wieder niedrigste Löhne vorfindet.
Transportkosten spielen dabei (noch) keine (entscheidende)
Rolle. Container-Schiffe können ihre Reststoffe
ungestraft in die Weltmeere entsorgen. Über die Besteuerung
von Flugbenzin ist beispielsweise zwischen Deutschland
und China heftiger Stre<strong>it</strong> entstanden. K

World Art in the Provincial Floodplain
Welt-Kunst in der Provinz-Aue
The world’s largest contemporary art exhib<strong>it</strong>ion takes
place every five years in Kassel. In 2012 <strong>it</strong>’s time again
for the next exhib<strong>it</strong>ion. The Arab Fund for Arts and Culture
is one of the sponsors, as is the Art Foundation NRW and
the American Embassy (d13.documenta.de/partner/oeffentliche-föerderung).
Countless exhib<strong>it</strong>s, many of them
challenging, are distributed amongst different locations
in this otherwise unassuming North-Hessian town. All
the same, this provincial town is planning to celebrate <strong>it</strong>s
1,100-year anniversary next year.
From Düsseldorf and NRW <strong>it</strong> takes about two hours on
the A44 highway in an easterly direction. En route, you can
see the industrial landscapes of the Ruhr Area, which are
also impressive in their own way. The stretch, which you
may even have the luck of driving along w<strong>it</strong>hout traffic
congestion, is lined by modern wind parks on your left
and right. At the end, the route takes you through the
deep forests of the Rothaargebirge and lastly down into
the floodplains of the river Fulda; and s<strong>it</strong>uated down there
is the main exhib<strong>it</strong>ion area of Documenta No. 13 since the
start in 1955. (kassel.de/kultur/documenta/12513).
If you really want to take time to contemplate the works
of art, you should plan more than a day tour for this exhib<strong>it</strong>ion.
Alone the tour by Walid Raad through his “Things
I Could Disavow” takes at least an hour. This New York Lebanese
artist deals w<strong>it</strong>h the present and future of Arabian
(art) history. And Walid Raad is only one of more than 200
participants at this global exhib<strong>it</strong>ion. If we are lucky w<strong>it</strong>h
the weather, the special open-air feeling will complement
the visual appeal, which makes Documenta a multi-dimensional
art experience. The runway at the Kassel-Calden
airport has recently been extended to a length of 2,500 m

oftmals herausfordernde Ausstellungstücke verteilen
sich auf die verschiedensten Orte in der ansonsten we<strong>it</strong>hin
unscheinbaren nordhessischen Stadt. Im nächsten Jahr
will die Provinzstadt allerdings bere<strong>it</strong>s ihr 1.100jähriges
Gründungsjubiläum feiern.
Aus Düsseldorf und NRW heraus sind es etwa zwei
Stunden über die Autobahn A44 Richtung Osten. Dazwischen
liegen zunächst die in ihrer Art ebenfalls eindrucksvollen
Industrielandschaften des Ruhrgebiets. Links und
rechts säumen moderne Wind-Energieparks die Strecke,
die gelegentlich sogar ohne Stau befahrbar ist. Sie führt
am Ende durch die tiefen Wälder des Rothaargebirges
schließlich hinab in die Auen-Landschaft des Flusses Fulda
und dort hinein in das Haupt-Ausstellungsgelände der Documenta
Nr. 13 se<strong>it</strong> dem Startjahr 1955. (kassel.de/kultur/
documenta/12513).
Wer die Kunstwerke bis September richtig auf sich
wirken lassen will, sollte mehr als nur einen Tagestrip
ansetzen. Allein die Führung von Walid Raad durch seine
„Things I Could Disavow“ dauert mindestens eine Stunde.
Der heute in New York lebenden Libanese beschäftigt sich
m<strong>it</strong> der (Kunst-)Geschichte der arabischen Welt: m<strong>it</strong> ihrer
Gegenwart und Zukunft. Und Walid Raad ist nur einer
der mehr als 200 Teilnehmer der globalen Ausstellung.
Vielleicht spielt das Wetter m<strong>it</strong>, dann gesellt sich zum
optischen Anspruch auch das besondere open-air-feeling,
das die Documenta zu einem multidimensionalen Kunsterlebnis
macht. Der Flughafen Kassel-Calden hat gerade
seine Landebahn auf 2.500 m Länge verlängert (flughafenkassel.de).
