100 Jahre Schweizer Weltatlas
1898 erteilte die Schweizerische Konferenz der kantonalen
Erziehungsdirektoren (EDK) dem Zürcher Gymnasiallehrer
August Aeppli den Auftrag, einen Atlas für
Schweizerische Mittelschulen zu erstellen; 1910 wurde er
erstmals als Gemeinschaftswerk aller Schweizer Kantone
von der EDK herausgegeben. Seit 1927 erstellt das
Institut für Kartografie der ETH Zürich den Atlas, zunächst
als Schweizerischer Mittelschulatlas unter der Leitung
von Eduard Imhof und zwischen 1978 und 2008
unter Ernst Spiess als Schweizer Weltatlas. Der Atlas wird
in Deutsch, Italienisch und Französisch publiziert und
ist der meistverbreitete Schulatlas in der Schweiz.
version and is designed using the same graphic style
elements. For the moment, however, only the most important
map types have been implemented in an exemplary approach.
In this respect, the positive points of the Swiss World Atlas
interactive are its functional aspects which cannot be integrated
into the printed version.
Would you like to mention two examples? It is possible, for instance,
by placing two maps side-by-side to compare for instance
the land use and geology of a certain area. The maps are
synchronised: when navigating through one map, you can see
how the comparative map ‘moves’. And climatological questions,
such as precipitation in Zurich and Bern, can be searched
online and compared by local climate diagrams.
What can I do, for instance, with the virtual globe, the sun and
the moon?
An interesting feature is that the most important outlinemaps
of the world can be projected onto the virtual, rotating globe.
This is also possible for the moon, which allows you, for
instance, to see the landing areas of lunarmissions. There’s
another special module in which you can watch the earth
moving around the sun from different angles. Once you select
the date and the latitude, you can see how this effects the
length of the day on an interactive graph.
Is the online version free of charge?
For the moment, yes. In 2014, we are planning to issue a
completely revised and updated printed version of the Swiss
World Atlas. Until then we hope to get lots of feedback on the
interactive version so that we can improve it where necessary in
parallel to our work on the printed version. ]
