Praktikum-Workshop: 

Übungsgottesdienste. 

Der wichtigste und öffentlichste Aufgabe eines Geistlichen ist das Aufführen und 

Vortragen der Gottesdienste in der Gemeinde. In diesem Workshop werden wir den 

längsten üblichen Gottesdienst üben, den ihr regelmässig in den Praktiken und in den 

Gemeinden begehen werdet: Schacharit le-Schabbat. Wir werden den Gottesdienst 

wiederholt in Teil und in Ganzen vorspielen, um eure Fähigkeiten, Erfahrungen, 

Kreativität, Wissen und Sicherheit bei der Arbeit zu verstärken.

Synagogal Skills 

Rabbiner müssen viel Zeit in Synagogen und Gottesdiensten verbringen. Sie müssen sich dort 

wie zu Hause fühlen und bereit sein, öffentliche Veranstaltungen auf professionellem Niveau zu 

leiten. Sie müssen grobe Konzepte und Strukturen sowie Kleinigkeiten und Details verstehen. In 

diesem Workshop werden einige Grundlagen sowie Einzelheiten für Rabbinerstudenten im 

ersten Studienjahr besprochen. Themen werden u.a. sein: Professionalismus, unsere Beiträge 

zum reibungslosen Verlauf eines Gottesdiensts, Vermeiden von Verwirrung im Gottesdienst, 

Rabbiner und Kahal, technische Aspekte liturgischer Aufführung.

Introduction to Liturgy II

What is Jewish prayer? What are the central challenges with prayer in modernity and post 

modernity? What are the principles that should guide changes in liberal liturgy? Through the 

different aspects of the course we will study the text, history and theology of the prayer book in 

order to Gain an overview of the origins and historical development of Jewish prayer through 

selected primary and secondary sources, study the structure, content and language of the 

traditional siddur [Rinat Yisrael, Ashkenaz], with selections from the weekday, Shabbat and 

Festival liturgies as well as from the liturgy of Israeli observances and explore the major 

differences between Reform and Traditional liturgy, understanding underlying theology and 

values that govern liturgical changes. This is the second part of the course, we will deal with the 

Amidah, Torah service, concluding prayers and Shabbat liturgy. How did the traditional siddurim 

develop historically, sociologically, and theologically? In terms of history, we will continue in the 

"rishonim" literature to our day.

bis zur professionellen Sozialarbeit. Aufbau und Struktur der jüdischen Gemeinden heute, 

Verstehen der Arbeit der Jüdischen Organisationen wie z.B. Zentralrat der Juden in 

Deutschlan und Zentralwohlfahrtsstelle der Juden in Deutschland. Praktische Beispiele aus den 

Gemeindepraktika, Theorie und Methoden der Gemeinwesenarbeit.

Schacharit 

Do (8:30-10:15) 

Gottesdienste verschiedener Arte zu verstehen und auf eine gute Weise vorbereiten und leiten 

zu können, gehört zwangsweise und grundsätzlich zu den Aufgaben jedes Rabbiners bzw. 

לחול שחרית´‏ Synagogenkantors. Wie gewohnt finden auch im Wintersemestersemester 2012/13 

statt. Studierende werden mit verschiedenen Aufgaben teil an der Gottesdienstleitung ביום ח 

nehmen. Jeder בעל קריאה sowie בעל תפילה wird sich zur Vorbereitung des Gottesdienstes eine 

Woche vorher individuell mit Rabbiner Katz treffen. Ziel des Vortreffens ist es, die den 

Gottesdienst leitenden Studierenden so vorzubereiten, dass sie ohne Schwierigkeiten ihre 

Aufgaben im Gottesdienst meistern können.

Musical Liturgy and Songs for Memorial Days and Life-Cycle Ceremonies and Synagogue 

Events 

Do (10:30-12:00) 

The course is a continuation of the previous course on Minor Holy-Days and Fast Days that was 

given during the Winter Semester 1012. It will cover the liturgy, customs, chants and songs of 

the minor holy-days and memorial days that were not covered in the Winter Semester and it will 

devote most of the time to the life-cycle events. The chants that will be discussed and sung in 

class will follow both German and Eastern European traditions as needed. In addition, selected 

songs for various occasions will be studied, mostly in Hebrew, but some in Yiddish. Liturgical 

text will follow the traditional Siddur, but Reform and Conservative texts will be studied as well. 

Musical materials will be selected from important cantorial books, such as Abraham Baer Baal 

T'fillah, Louis Lewandoski Kol Rinnah Ut'fillah, Gershon Ephros Anthology of Cantorial Music 

and Sholom Kalib The Musical Tradition of the Eastern European Synagogue. Specific materials 

for the first lessons will be provided before the beginning of the course, materials for the other 

lessons will be provided at least three weeks before each lesson.

Part 1: We will complete our study of the cantillation systems by learning the melodies for the 

Three Megillot of the Three Festivals (Shir Hashirim, Ruth, Kohellet) as well as review the other 

two Megillot (Esther and Eicha). 

Part 2: During the second part of the semester, this course will focus on basic repertoire for the 

two main lifecycle events, Weddings and Funerals. Repertoire will include simple chants for the 

wedding blessins, additional wedding songs, simple chants for Eil Malei and other Funeral texts. 

Homework assignments will be given and students are expected to submit recordings by email.

The Cycle of Life

We will study traditional and contemporary texts and music for creating meaningful ceremonies 

for life cycle events such as weddings, funerals, b'nei mitzvah, etc. Techniques involved in 

officiating at these events will be reviewed, including appropriate liturgical readings, flow of text 

and song, and methods of crafting eulogies, etc. will be offered.

Die russischen Juden in Deutschland: Geschichte, Identität, Perspektiven 

So, 05.05.13 (12.00 – 18.00) 

Seit den 1990er Jahren bilden die Juden aus der ehemaligen Sowjetunion die Mehrheit in den 

jüdischen Gemeinden in Deutschland. Wer sind diese Menschen, welche Erwartungen haben 

sie, welches Verständnis vom Judentum haben sie mitgebracht – diesen und anderen Fragen ist 

das Blockseminar gewidmet.

Traditional Cantorial Repertoire for Minor Holy Days and Life-Cycle Ceremonies 

Do (12.15 – 13.45, KANT, 5. OG) 

A workshop course combined with individual lessons in which selected cantorial compositions 

will be taught. The course will center on seminal traditional works of Hazzanut for the special 

services and ceremonies, mostly in the Eastern-European style. 

It will offer an opportunity for the students to hone their vocal, stylistic and expressive skills in 

singing high-level settings of prayers by past and present cantorial masters. 

Cantor Azi Schwartz (01.07. – 04.07.) (5. OG) 

Current Songs and Chants for Life-Cycle Events 

The Block Seminar will consist of class lessons and individual sessions. It will expose the 

students to practical musical pieces for life-cycle events. The seminar will be based on special

songs collected and/or arranged by Cantor Azi Schwartz, selected with an emphasis on their 

usefulness to ceremonies in young communities.

Individual Coachings for Special Services (KANT one-on-one coachings, 5. OG) 

Dr. Selig will continue to prepare students for the Yanim Noraim. In particular the music of 

Lewandowski, Naumbourg, Kirschner and Sulzer will be discussed with concrete examples. 

Students will be engaged by preparing repertoire for their various student pulpits. 

Students will also be required to demonstrate the different German Nussachs and styles of 

prayers from the various German communities including the Berlin, Munich, Frankfurt and the 

Hamburg tradition.

Blockseminar „Juden, Christen und Muslime im religionsrechtlichen Vergleich“ 

Das Blockseminar „Juden, Christen und Muslime im religionsrechtlichen Vergleich I“ ist 

ein gemeinsames Lehrangebot der religionsrechtlichen Institute an der Universität 

Potsdam und widmet sich im Sommersemester 2013 den Grundlagen im Verhältnis zum 

säkularen Staat. 

Grundlegende Themen sind die Rechtsquellen des Religionsrechts im Vergleich sowie 

das Verhältnis zwischen staatlichem Recht (in Deutschland und Europa) und dem 

Religionsrecht. Thematisiert werden anschließend die Stellung des geistlichen 

Amtsträgers im Spannungsfeld des religiösen Rechts sowie die komplexen Fragen der 

Ausbildung zum geistlichen Amt. Die unterschiedlichen Kooperationsweisen zwischen 

Religionsgemeinschaften und dem Staat sind ebenso zu vergleichen wie die diversen 

Ausbildungsgänge und Universitätstheologien. Schließlich behandeln wir die 

Themenfelder der schulischen religiösen Unterweisung (Religionsunterricht, 

Religionskunde) sowie die Funktionsweise der Religionslehrerausbildung und deren 

Einrichtungen, jeweils im religionsrechtlichen Vergleich zwischen Juden, Christen und 

Muslimen. 

Die obligatorische Vorbesprechung findet zusammen mit einem wissenschaftlichen 

Vortrag am Dienstag, 16.04.2013, ca. 17.30 h – 20 h, am Universitätsstandort 

Griebnitzsee statt. 

Die Seminarsitzungen finden statt am Freitag, 31.05.2013, 9 h – 18 h, und Freitag, 

14.06.2013, 9 h – 18 h, im Seminarraum des Abraham-Geiger-Kollegs in Berlin- 

Charlottenburg.
