—A Unique Challenge

We hoped that our stadium projects would trigger
further cultural development beyond our direct duty to
fulfill the functional and commercial purposes of this
construction assignment. We presented our projects
and reported on their progress in many talks and discussion
events. Thus, we also had repeated opportunities
to elucidate our own pretensions in a critical way.
At one of those opportunities in 2005, we came into
chance contact with the engineering office BKS from
Port Elizabeth. Our commitment in the eastern cape
city evolved from this meeting, initially providing advice
regarding the FIFA requirements and later cooperating
intensely with BKS on the planning work after
the call for tenders in the architectural competitions
relating to all three projects, which we subsequently
succeeded in winning.
Only a short time later, while the midsummer
night’s dream was beginning in Germany and the whole
football world was experiencing the fans’ enthusiasm
in German stadiums and cities via the media, we began
the concrete planning work for three stadiums that
were expected to trigger at least the same level of enthusiasm

But our enthusiasm and adventurousness with respect
to these tasks in what was “new planning territory”
for us were frustrated repeatedly. Doubts arose,

zufällig zum Kontakt mit dem Ingenieurbüro BKS aus
Port Elizabeth. Daraus entstand unser Engagement in der
Stadt am Ostkap, zunächst als Beratungsleistung für die
FIFA-Anforderungen und später dann als intensive Kooperation
mit BKS für die entwerferische Bearbeitung in
den ausgelobten Architekturwettbewerben für alle drei
Projekte, bei denen wir jeweils erfolgreich waren.
Während kurze Zeit später in Deutschland das »Sommermärchen«
begann und die ganze Fußballwelt die Begeisterung
der Fans in den deutschen Stadien und Städten
medial erlebte, begannen wir mit der konkreten Planungsarbeit
an den Stadien, die vier Jahre später und

In the end, we did manage to assert an influence
through continual presence and stubborn insistence,
ensuring that no one lost sight of the superordinate
aims and implementing our understanding of the architect’s
work as a “specialist for everything.” We were
able to bring this competence into the projects more
and more, mainly thanks to support from the South
African building clients or rather, to some leading personalities
working on their behalf. We owe special gratitude
to those people for the passionate and trusting
support that they showed our team.
Today, after a learning process full of new insights,
we know what “wait and see” means, and we share Helen
Zille’s conviction that Africa really can do it.

path lined with trees has been laid out around the stadium
and North End Lake, which will be turned into a
water sports area.
In the rather featureless industrial city, the stadium
has not only become a center of sport and recreation
for the population, but also a new landmark for
the “Friendly City”, as PE is called in the region, visible
from far away; a symbol of hope and the sense of new
departure experienced in South Africa today.

apolitical in South African football matters? Far
from it, since we cannot forget the existence of Shembe
Church in the province of KwaZulu Natal, north of Durban.
The church is one hundred years old, and once a
year its members process to the Nhlangakazi, their holy
mountain. And while they are doing this, they blow as
hard as they can into their kuduzela, the instrument on
which the vuvuzela is modeled. Blowing on the kuduzela
is something deeply religious, according to the speaker
of the Shembe, Enoch Mthemba, in January 2010:
“We will take this matter to court to stop the production
of the vuvuzela,” he announced. “We want the football
fans to stop doing this; we take it very seriously.”
He has found unexpected support among some
managers of the national teams participating in the
World Cup. “Our players cannot concentrate with all
that noise,” says the coach from Japan, for example. The
vuvuzela ought to be abolished. The South Africans are
furious, and Sepp Blatter is furious, too. He says the
vuvuzela represents African culture, and it has to stay.
Blatter’s support was balsam for the nation’s soul.
