for the protection of selected grassland habitat types and moorlands of the FFH –guideline, for example ex–lege- Schutz, contract nature protection, biotope protectionprograms, FFH - guidelines and private nature protection programmes. The empiricaldata were won by the evaluation of relevant literature, by interviewing experts, byanalyzing the management plans, the inventories and various contributions on thehomepages of the federal states concerned, the Federal Office for EnvironmentProtection and of various NGOs.The following questions are being looked at: How are the individual habitat typesprotected? Which endangerments exist? Which needs for action result from theseendangerments? Which protection strategies are reasonable and feasible? How dothe different preventive measures affect the individual habitat types? Which controlmechanisms are there, how efficient are they?The results show that the three federal states pursue partially very differentimplementation strategies for the protection of the habitat types. Starting with theimplementation of Natura 2000, the basic data acquisition, the production andimplementation of management measures to the instrument of area care, theorganization of public information meetings, the provision of „nature protectionmedia”, quite diverging approaches are to be found. There also is a lack of cooperationbetween the Austrian federal states. On the financial and personnel levelhardly any resource-conscious acting can be detected which leads to a lack ofsynergies.
