The dramatic scene Cleopatra and the
Snake composed in 2011 is based on
the text from Act V, Scene II of
Shakespeare’s tragedy Antony and
Cleopatra in the Russian translation
by Boris Pasternak. I consider Pasternak’s
translation with its highly expressive
visual imagery, sublimity and
breathtaking language to be the kindred
spirit of this masterwork.
The final scene in the Shakespearean
tragedy is a treasure trove for composers.
The ’boiling temperature’ of
this dramatic collision rises sharply
at this point of the play and substantially
exceeds ’36.6°C’ (which would
I think be highly detrimental for the
operatic genre!). The conflict between
life and death, the power of
love and the ’drug of power’ provide
the motivation for fatal decision
made by the legendary beauty – the
Queen of Egypt. I would categorise
the genre of this dramatic scene
Cleopatra and the Snake as a type of
monodrama.
Rodion Shchedrin
Die Dramatische Szene Cleopatra
and the Snake habe ich im Jahre 2011
auf Textbasis der zweiten Szene aus
dem fünften Akt der Tragödie Antonius
und Cleopatra von Shakespeare
in der russischen Übersetzung von
Boris Pasternak komponiert. In ihrer
ausdrucksstarken Bildlichkeit, Erhabenheit
und atemberaubenden Spra -
che empfinde ich die Übersetzung
von Pasternak angesichts dieses
Meisterwerks des großen Briten als
kongenial.
Die Schlussszene der shakespeareschen
Tragödie ist ein ausgesprochen
fruchtbarer Stoff für Komponisten.
Die „Siedetemperatur“ der dramatischen
Kollision ist hier extrem hoch.
Das sind keine „36,6 Grad Celsius“
(was, so glaube ich, immer schädlich
für die Oper als Genre wäre!). Der
Konflikt von Leben und Tod, Kraft
der Liebe und der „Machtdroge“ sind
die Beweggründe für diese fatale
Entscheidung der legendären Schönheit
– der ägyptischen Königin. Das
Genre der dramatischen Szene
Cleopatra and the Snake würde ich als
eine Art Monodram bezeichnen.
The opening lines of Marcel Proust’s
In Search of Lost Time provide the
text for Gerald Barry’s Long Time.
Beginning ‘For a long time I used to
go to bed early’, the work unfolds
over gently rising and falling C major
scales, voice parts handing over
to each other in the strict rhythmic
regularity that prevails throughout
the piece.
Der Anfang von Marcel Prousts Auf
der Suche nach der verlorenen Zeit liefert
den Text für Gerald Barrys Long
Time. Die ersten Worte dieses siebenbändigen
Romans, „For a long time I
used to go to bed early”, werden in
auf- und absteigenden C-Dur-Skalen
des Chores miteinander verwoben
und in dem strengen Rhythmus, der
das ganze Werk bestimmt, von Stimme
zu Stimme weitergegeben.
Commissioned and performed as
part of ’Artists Taking the Lead’, the
flagship project of the London 2012
Cultural Olympiad, OverWorlds sees
Gavin Bryars collaborating with the
Brothers Quay to create a work to
be performed in the spectacular
County Arcade in Leeds designed by
Frank Matcham. With newly commissioned
texts from Blake Morrison
(whose work Bryars has turned
to many times including for the libretti
of his operas ‘G’ and Doctor
Ox’s Experiment) Bryars depicts
childhood scenes – The Aire Bridge,
broken at both ends; deer roaming
freely in the fields; and the flush of
excitement at the prospect of returning
home.
Flaggschiff-Projekt der Londoner
konzipiert zusammen mit den Brüdern
Quay dieses Werk, das in der
spektakulären, von Frank Matcham
entworfenen County Arcade in
Leeds uraufgeführt werden wird.
Blake Morrison, mit dem Bryars bereits
bei seinen Opern G und Dr
Ox’s Experiment gearbeitet hatte,
hat Texte geschrieben, die Kindheitserinnerungen
von Gavin Bryars
verarbeiten: die an beiden Enden
geborstene Aire-Brücke, Hirsche,
die frei in den Feldern herumstreifen,
und die Woge von Erregung bei
der Erwartung, heimzukehren.
